5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a very easy to read book. If you have already taken organic chemistry it may be a bit of a review but it does apply the information to biological pathways. If you have not already taken organic chemistry, it is a great book to learn it. I think that it is easier, yet just as comprehensive as other textbooks out there, but it skips over things that are more useful in physical organic chemistry (energy equations and things like that). We are using it in our biochemistry class and it's a great review that gets to the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn more about biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites
This book is simply great. The scholar and very clear presentation by the authors make the subject of each chapter almost self-explanatory. The first two chapters introduce the organic reactions which are relevant in biosynthesis, stereochemistry of biological molecules and the major classes of primary metabolites. In the following chapters the authors discuss, with care and in detail, the biosynthesis of every class of primary metabolite, showing mechanisms for every single reaction. The last chapter on biosynthesis presents examples of some natural products biosynthesis (classical examples). Unfortunately, no example on the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid derivatives is included. However, even though, the book is worth of purchase for students and teachers interested in the mechanistic aspects of primary and secondary metabolites biosynthesis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear-cut explanatons
This book is most suitable as an organic chemistry text for biological pathway and would be valuable for undergraduate students. Each of mechanisms are well illustrated with colorful charts. To my reglet, there is no description on the nitrogen fixation. Nevertheless I recommend it as one of the valuable study-aid book.

Product Description

Techniques in Organic Chemistry is the most comprehensive presentation of lab techniques available for organic chemistry students—and the least expensive. This book is intended to serve as a laboratory textbook of experimental techniques for all students of organic chemistry.  It is written to provide effective support for guided-inquiry and design-based experiments and projects, as well as for traditional lab experiments. Techniques in Organic Chemistry combines specific instructions for 3 different kinds of laboratory glassware (miniscale, standard-taper microscale, Williamson microscale). It offers extensive coverage of spectroscopic techniques and a strong emphasis on safety issues. It can be used in conjunction with any lab experiments to provide the background and skills necessary for mastering the organic chemistry laboratory.

The techniques manual may be purchased separately, or it can be packaged with either version of Mohrig’s Modern Projects and Experiments in Organic Chemistry or with an instructor’s own experiments through Freeman Custom Publishing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contact store after you have bought
I order this text book form them and they said it would take three weeks to get it shipped to me.However, when I contacted them after the three weeks were up they said that they didn't have the book when I ordered it.Fortunately, they refunded me my money, but I don't think they would have if I had not sent a complaint about not having my book. And because they failed to notify me that they didn't have the book I now don't have enough time to get another book for my class and thus has added a lot of complication to my life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average book
This book is helpful for an organic chemistry class, maybe for a review to strengthen your organic chemistry background for a pharmacology course or pharmacy school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid Organic Review
I purchased this in order to prepare myself for an medicinal chemistry course, and was able to chew through it slowly in about 2 weeks.I have not had organic chemistry in 3 years, and it was a fantastic source for bringing old knowledge, and some new, to the forefront of my mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Save the money, use it towards the purchase of a Medicinal Chemistry Book
This book is good if you want a quick read on FGs in Medicinal Chemistry, you can read it in 3 sessions and pick up some concepts here and there, but you will need to look in other places to expand your knowledge more in depth. For that, I would rather save the money and use it towards the purchase of a good medicinal chemistry book, where you will find the same information and more.... don't get me wrong, this book here is perfect if you have to travel or commute to work by bus or train and need some reading, but to learn beyond it, then this is not for you,

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book
I had to purchase this book for a Principles of Drug Action class in pharmacy school. The book is pretty easy to read but very brief on all topics. This makes for a quick read but if you don't understand a topic, you will have to look elsewhere because there is simply not much 'depth' here.Overall a good review if organic is fairly fresh and will probably serve as a good primer but you will need other texts for depth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great OChem Review
I am currently in pharmacy school and we recently had a class about medicinal chemistry.I have not had organic chemistry or used topics pertaining to in over 2 years. Our instructor rccommended this book and the layout is easy to follow and to understand.I wouldn't use this if you are just starting organic chemistry, but more so as a review for further graduate level courses. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vogel is the man
The new Vogel is not as detailed in basic techniques but does manage to cover basic processes in a way seldom seen in modern organic lab guides. I should be on the shelf of every serious organic and biochemist along with the Fieser & Fieser series "Reagents for Organic Chemistry".

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate textbook on practical organic synthesis
It has the most trustworthy procedures for the synthesis of organic compounds with the underlying philosophy behind the reactions complete with the mechanism. Even briefly described procedures are easy to follow. An example in point is the Swern's oxidation. It also includes characterization of compounds using both chemical and spectroscopic methods thus covering the whole spectrum of practical organic chemistry. Almost all the other information to be required by an organic synthetic chemist in the laboratory is also included. I do not know of any other single book that can rival the Vogel. I, however, would very much like to see a moderately priced new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars good text, forbidding price
The book is very good for reference, yet it is too expensive for graduate students. I would also suggest taking $$$off, relative to March's and C&S's good text, this one is really forbidding.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Organic Laboratory
I took an undergraduate course on advanced organic laboratory method andVogel was meant to be an incredible reference and life-saver.Theoverwhelming size of the book might seem somewhat frightening yet theuseful information is worth the size and money.

Pavia's"Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques" might seem to bea water-down version of Vogel.Vogel is extremely well-written anddetailed in laboratory tecniques such as chromatography, distillation,HPLC, crystallization, extraction, etc.A chapter is also devoted todiscussion of solvents and reagents, which helps tremendously forseparation experiments.

Vogel also discusses aliphatic, heterocyclic, andaromatic compounds and introduces spectroscopic methods.Vogel isrecommended for advanced lab course that requires frequent modification oflab procedures and reference for chemists.

3-0 out of 5 stars Time for a new edition
This book is really good but it's time for a new edition ! Compared toanother excellent book (Jerry March) it is also too expensive. I would give5 stars to a new and cheaper edition. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Do The Textbook Problems First!
Like "3000 Solved Problems in Organic Chemistry" from Schaumstudy series, the problems in this problem solver are just a bit off fromwhat you will expect on a midterm exam.Problems are either too simple ortoo involved.Students should make sure they understand lectures (andconcepts behind lectures) and attempt problems in the textbook.Studentsshould pay close attention to mechanism problems and stereochemistry.Theproblem solver itself might seem overwhelming and may not be in concordwith concepts being discussed in major organic texts. The problem solver, yet does provide a plethora of extra problems students can look at and trysolving.Another item I suggest students checking out from the libraryrather than spending money on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
the format is too confusing. very few questions with mini lectures as explanations. It is very difficult to find the exact question to help with the hard to grasp areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Example of an Excellent Supplement for Organic Chemistry
The Organic Chemistry Problem Solver is an excellent supplement for first-time students taking organic chemistry. If fact, in my opinion, it is the best at what it does -- provide students with much-needed guidancein their study of organic chemistry. It is also helpful as a review tostudents who are taking an upper-level course, even the first graduatecourse. It is more than a set of problems with their solutions, however. It is that, but it also provides a discussion of the approach to working atype of problem or to a general topic in organic chemistry --stereochemistry, for example. The description of approache to the studyand application of organic chemistry, detailed solutions, and accompanyingdiscussions and descriptions are the strength of the book and is what makesit so valuable to the student.I would particularly reccommend it to astudent who is in a course where the professor is not using a specifictextbook or is not following the assigned textbook very closely, becausemany of the topics in a first-year organic course are described in enoughdetail to provide the background needed to understand most of theprinciples of the subject; it that sense, it acts a written tutor for thesubject. Two characteristics are somewhat distracting, but they are minor:an older-looking font is used in the text (Courier ?) and the drawings andchemical structures (the extended structure of propane, for example) arecrude in comparision to the slick drawings and structures found in today'schemistry textbooks.I would look past these, however, and get this bookif I were taking a first-year course (or an intermediate or first-yeargraduate course).Used appropriately with the assigned texbook, it will bea great help with a time-consuming course that is considered to be verydemanding to most students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
extremely well packaged, and arrived on time. It was in the condition as described. Thank you very much!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read
I like the way this book is set up.This makes it easy when you are dealing with a subject matter you may not like that much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good textbook
This textbook does not really cover the fundamentals of organic chemistry but more advance fundamentals. Students really need to have at least two semesters of general chemistry before attempting Organic Chemistry and this textbook is more advanced than what I needed for a two-year college degree. I will be looking for something less advaance and easier for the students to read. The textbook would be excellent for more advance degree seeking students. The students that I have are not chemistry majors. The description of the textbook is misleading. I will not be using this in future semesters. Also for the price, students should have access to study tools online and not be gouged for more money after paying an exuberant price for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth every penny!!
orgo cards are amazing, i used the cards as a study guide for o-chem, i got an A in the first part and aiming for an A in the second part right now. much better than the text, everything is clearly explained and nothing is confusing, excellent way of studying mechanism which are clearly depicted on the back of the cards, has everything you need to know to understand and pass o-chem with a good grade, worth every penny!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for memorizing, anywhere and any time
These cards are very useful and convenient for memorizing, and are carefully edited to include only the important reactions. I especially love that they draw out each reaction's mechanism. They have more details than what flash cards are supposed to have, but I find that most of the details are important and must be remembered (e.g. syn- or anti-; E1 or E2). Your own flash cards may easily miss out those important details.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not useful
After buying these cards I realized that the real study value of flash cards is making them for yourself. That has to account for at least half of the learning that you do. These pre-packaged cards are too general, cover too much material on each card and really didn't work for me because they weren't tailored to my specific needs. I ended up making my own the same way that I always do. Live and learn.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe for review later, but not for studying
As a Biochemistry graduate who took Organic Chemistry and went on to TA it for two years, I found these to be unhelpful in the process. The material was structured somewhat sensibly, but in a order very different from our textbook. This made using them more work than it was worth, as our in book chapter summaries were far more useful. These have sat on the shelf and collected dust for years and I don't foresee them ever becoming useful. On a side note - they have a horrendous chemical smell from something in the production process.

If you're looking for something to help you succeed in O-Chem, buy a Molecular Model kit or a Study/ Solution guide for your textbook. These will actually be helpful, while these study cards will likely be of little use in conjunction with a course.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a colossal waste of money!
These cards don't help at all. They are basically just an abridged text book (paragraphs and all) printed on 200+ separate cards. In fact, my textbook has more useful summarization tables, examples and diagrams.Furthermore the cards themselves are bulky and cumbersome to hold.If I hadn't taken the plastic off, I would take them back. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't understand Organic Chemistry then get this book.
I am currently teaching myself Biochemistry, but I was coming across alot of rough spots in that text.My undergraduate degree was in psychology, so I don't have an extensive biology or chemistry background.I picked up McMurry's text to help supplement some of the concepts I wasn't understanding in the biochemistry text and was surprised at how well he explains the material. From reading his text I feel that I am developing a strong background in organic chemistry to eventually understand biochemistry. Also, I'm finding alot of interest in organic chemistry on it's own because of how McMurry presents the information.

If you're looking for an organic chemistry text that presents the information in a manner that allows for heightened understanding than pick up this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK - BUT STAY AWAY FROM CHM247 AT U of T
This textbook was good - I just hate organic chemistry! I would advise you to buy this book if you need it - just don't go past CHM138 at the University of Toronto, because CHM247 is a pain in the ass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok for Introductory OChem
Like many have mentioned, the book is good for beginners and intro classes. The problems and material are relatively "simple." If that is all you require, "easy," not very indepth and just the simple basics, the book does it's job.

1-0 out of 5 stars A low-level text masquerading as a rigorous organic text
I have taught undergraduate organic chemistry for almost 10 years and have used this book (not by choice) for most of them. This book is incredibly easy to read and that is why many students like it.But the price that the instructor pays for that is in it's lack of depth. This book is NOT rigorous enough for the average science major/pre-professional student. In fact, I have used one semester, nursing level texts that were more rigorous than this book (Harold Hart's Organic Chemistry: A Short Course comes to mind). If you want a comprehensive and rigorous 2-semester organic text, I would recommend Loudon's Organic Chemistry far ahead of this nice and pretty but shallow text.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good intro book.
Definitely. It's a great book for first-year organic, I think, regardless of what major you're in, because McMurry seeks to present the foundations of organic knowledge. While it's not as complex as some other books, I think it certainly allows the reader to get a good grasp on what's going on. The fact that it tends to be a light read is a good one -- especially on those nights before the exam when you have to skim through several chapters before morning arrives. :)

So yes. The book itself is very well-presented, with well-diagrammed reactions, colors, and figures that help supplement the text. The textual portions themselves can be a little on the weak side, meaning you actually have to listen to your professor in class. However, if you want a more rigorous and advanced approach to organic chemistry... look up Jerry March. ... Read more

Product Description
Developing the green organic program at the University of Oregon, Kenneth Doxsee and James Hutchison saw the urgent need and rapidly growing demand for green chemistry laboratory materials. This lab text describes the tools and strategies of green chemistry, and the lab experiments that allow investigation of organic chemistry concepts and techniques in a greener laboratory setting. GREEN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY: STRATEGIES, TOOLS AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS was developed and successfully tested as a direct replacement of the traditional organic chemistry laboratory curriculum. Thus, the conceptual themes and experimental techniques important to the modern practice of organic chemistry can be taught in the context of more environmentally-benign laboratory experiments. Students acquire the tools to assess the health and environmental impacts of chemical processes and the strategies to improve develop new processes that are less harmful to human health and the environment. The curriculum introduces a number of state-of-the-art experiments and reduces reliance on expensive environmental controls, such as fume hoods. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The future of organic chemistry training
As an organic chemistry student, I was concerned that I wasn't learning the appropriate way to think about organic synthesis. Most of the preoccupation with organic chemistry in the lab is just with the mastery of technique and familiarity with reagents. This book goes much further than the typical approach to organic chemistry.

The book is mainly composed of two sections: a 100pg primer on green organic chemistry reviewed in the next section, and then a 150pg set of 19 laboratory experiments.

Part 1: Overview of Green Organic Chemistry

The book begins with an overview of fundamental concepts outside of but related to organic chemistry such as: toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental problems caused by organic synthesis, and environmental risk assessment.

The second part of the introductory section then introduces the main concepts of green chemistry such as alternative solvent usage. As a chem student this is especially useful not just because it provides a wonderful introduction to creative thinking in choosing solvents, but also because it provides a concise review of conventional solvents and their properties. It also provides a beautiful table with solubility, environmental fate, and hazard data.It then concludes the solvent section with how to design new solvents, and ultimately how to design syntheses without solvents.

It then explores the use of alternative reagents - such as biologically produced reagents, and even the use of light as a reagent. This section moves into a wonderful section on how to design a reaction efficiently and cleanly, providing green metrics like "atom economy."It then gives examples of how certain green alternatives have been made (such as hydroflurocarbons replacing ozone damaging chlorofluorocarbons)

Part 2: Laboratory Experiments

The structure of each lab is as follows: chemical concepts you will learn, the green lessons being shown, how long the experiment will take, a historical and scientific introduction to the processes in the experiment, a pre-lab preparation, the procedure, post-lab questions, technical tips concerning procedure, and troubleshooting.

Some of the experiments will be familiar to students of organic chemistry, such as bromination of alkenes, but many of the reactions are things that seem relatively new to the organic chemistry lab syllabus, such as: combinatorial chemistry methods, metallation, and solid-phase photochemistry. This new set of experiments is very refreshing and avoids the redundancy of other organic lab experiments.

Although some of the experimental protocol refers you to outside sources in order to understand the material better (I would have preferred and entirely internally self-sufficient book), this is understandable given that much of this information has been produced elsewhere and doesn't need to be reprinted.

Conclusion:
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of several small reasons:

1) The book, being an environmentally conscious endeavor, should have been printed in smaller font and single spaced (it is double and the font is somewhat large). This probably could have cut at least 50 pages from the book.

2) I would have preferred there to be little or no recourse to outside sources of information.Or if there was recourse to outside material, a more inspiring problem solving approach would have been welcome to inspire the reader to figure it out on his or her own.Normally I just want to understand something, and taking the time to look elsewhere for it seemed unnecessary.

All in all the book is very exciting, and so long as students are willing to reflect and do some outside reading, it is a welcome and inspiring push in the right direction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a good reference text, but it's supposed to be a graduate intro text
Compared to the 1st edition this text is about twice the size.It is a monstrously large book. However, the book fails to teach the concepts in a clear fashion required when one is just starting in the field.Too much attention is spent to minute details that confound the subject.A great deal of space is used on deriving formulas.

It is without a doubt that the authors are exceptional minds in their fields, and have a fine understanding of the material. However, speaking as a student, they do me no favors in explaining what is going on.This text needs to be rewritten and edited to serve as a useful textbook for graduate students.Until then, the book will possibly be useful as a reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars not authentic
the text I received is much thicker (nearly 2x the size) than the original 1300 page text which makes for a very heavy load. The images are much darker than those it was compared to as well. I can only assume that this text is not authentic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but complicated
I am using this book as part of my graduate class. Before I got this book, I was using the old edition, believe me the old edition is much simpler, easier to understand than this new one. They have integrated the book with overwhelming symbols for which they do not even have the key/index. You spend a lot of time figuring out what the symbols mean. So, I would recommend that you try to get a hold of the old edition of the book, however remember that the old edition does not cover the modelling part and does not give you exposure to the problem sets.
So, the bottom line is that if you want to get an understanding and feel of the subject goahead for the old edition, but if this isyour core area of research and do not mind a bit of complication in the writing and explanation, go for the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
This book is an asset for the student and professional alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for environmental chemistry

Product Description
"Spectroscopic Method in Organic Chemistry" is a well established introductory guide to the interpretation of ultraviolet, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra of organic compounds. It can be used as a textbook for a first course in the application of these techniques to structure determination, as well as a handbook for synthetic organic chemists.Updates to the new edition are as follows: structure - the same structure will be retained in this new edition. There will be five chapters - UV, IR, NMR and MS, followed by examples and problems. The new edition content: The first four chapters have been completely rewritten to reflect changes that have taken place since the current edition published. Key changes include: coverage of UV and IR Spectra is more concise; coverage of NMR has been expanded; coverage of MS has been made more relevant to the everyday application of this technique; IR Chapter has been restructured so that the spectra are displayed where they are being discussed, rather than at the end of the chapter; and, examples. All 60 MHz spectra have been replaced with new examples at 400 MHz or more. ... Read more
