The current state of library services is then explored, followed by a chapter on how new technologies are being used to expand and improve services. A final chapter offers guidelines for collection management. ... Read more

The goal of this report is to assist managers in gauging a company's financial performance vis-a-vis firms competing in the same sector, at the global level. In particular, this report covers PETROGLYPH ENERGY, INC., HUTCHINSON, USA. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's performance against other firms on a worldwide basis.Doing so, however, is not an obvious task.First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector.Second, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs to use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full financial benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover assets, liabilities, income and ratios.Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 reports are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. ... Read more

Product Description

The Cape Alitak Petroglyphs is the culmination of Woody Knebel’s ten years spent drawing, photographing, and experiencing the mysteries of this windswept place at the southern entrance to the Kodiak Archipelago. Shedding important light on Kodiak rock art, this volume provides in-depth cultural and artistic insight into an unusually rich picture of Alutiiq conventions, traditional symbolic history, and spiritual belief. Accompanied by color maps and black-and-white photography, The Cape Alitak Petroglyphs captures the majesty and mystery of the five hundred individual images that form the largest known cluster of stationary rock carvings in the Alaskan region and provides an important comparison to the many other forms of Alutiiq artistic expression preserved in artifacts and historic objects.

Product Description
In the poems of Petroglyphs, Ostrander piles up image after image, in long and short lines, creating a cadence. Whether the poem is an epithalamium for a beloved daughter, the stark image of a suicide artist, or a climb in the Himalayas, the poet's unique voice comes through, and we see the work of a beautiful and probing mind, a generous spirit. Ostrander is a master craftsman, with patience and discipline to capture "The Word"-"which is always there, this reassembling of the self. . . a word that, ignored, appears for a moment and returns, lucid, to the circle of our reaching, the radius of our love." His poems, richly textured and resonant, are both shape and shadowshape. In the desert's shifting sands, he hears still the inland sea it has replaced, in a beach at Santa Cruz, California, the eternal forsakenness of Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach." ~~~~~Ruth. G. Iodice, Founding Editor, Blue Unicorn: A Triquarterly of Poetry ~~~~~~~~The Welsh poet Vernon Watkins said about writing poems, "Cold craftsmanship is the best container of fire." Fred Ostrander is a poet who understands such a dedicated and diligent approach to the use of language. His poetic vision, subtle and engaging, is very individual and is powered by the natural rhythms of a confiding voice, a voice that conveys a man of deep integrity and humanity. The poems in Petroglyphs are a real breath of fresh air, intimate and universal, lyrical and intelligent. They are first-class poems that call the reader back, again and again, to wander around their word and sound landscapes. This is a collection that truly deserves a wide readership. ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~Peter Thabit Jones, Editor, Seventh Quarry (Swansea, Wales)In Petroglyphs, Fred Ostrander distills a life filled with travel and observation into a series of poems that probe the depths of meaning in language that makes the failure of words all the more poignant and meaningful. Whether describing nature or art, the attention to detail is absolute; the deference to image steeped in reverence. In poem after poem, experience and memory, image and the effects of image are examined through the lens of language to erupt into the beautiful. Here is the essential quest revealed. This is a collection of poetry one simply must read again and again. ~~~~~~James Michael Robbins, Sulphur River Literary Review~~~~~~~In a period when trivial poetry is not only the norm, but apparently the ideal, Ostrander's work is complex, subtle, massive, and disturbingly romantic. ~~~~~~~Jeanne McGahey, winner, Quarterly Review of Literature Poetry Competition ~~~~~ ~~~~To begin reading Fred Ostrander is to enter an alternate, intenser world where the great images rule and the tides of the universe palpably lift (and drop) us all. Ostrander is one of those poets of whom accomplished poets say, "I wish I could write like that." -~~~~~~~John Hart, two-time winner, Commonwealth Club Medal in Californiana~~~~~~~ ... Read more

Excerpt: The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Up to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) deep, the canyon stretches for over 80 miles (130 km) as the river winds westward through the Cascade Range forming the boundary between the State of Washington to the north and Oregon to the south. Extending roughly from the confluence of the Columbia with the Deschutes River down to eastern reaches of the Portland metropolitan area, the gorge furnishes the only navigable route through the Cascades and the only water connection between the Columbia River Plateau and the Pacific Ocean. The gorge holds federally protected status as a National Scenic Area called the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area and is managed by the United States Forest Service. The gorge is a popular recreational destination. The western gorge is dominated by conifers, Bigleaf Maple, cottonwood, Oregon Ash, and Vine Maple. The eastern gorge is home to Bigleaf Maple and Garry Oak. The wide range of elevation and precipitation in the gorge creates a diverse collection of ecosystems from the temperate rain forest at Oneonta Gorge (with an average annual precipitation of 75 inches (1,900 mm)) to the Celilo grasslands (with average annual precipitation 12 inches (300 mm), with a transitional dry woodland between Hood River and The Dalles. A large variety of endemic wildflowers thrives throughout the gorge. Atmospheric pressure differentials east and west of the Cascades create a wind tunnel effect in the deep cut of the gorge...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=320891 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource and very interesting
This book describes the locations, histories, and imaages in acessible and remote sites. It is an invaluable adjunct to a petroglyph-viewing trip. The language is dry, but the numerous images and maps let one understand what they are seeing.I have used it for several years on trips to the Big Island and am very glad I made the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars In The Spirit of Place - indeed, captures the spirit of the place!
Building on his earlier work, Stasack and Lee produce the most comprehensive work on Hawaiian petroglyphs to date.Rock hounds will appreciate the comprehensive site maps as well as the exhaustive cataloguing of virtually every known petroglyph in the islands to date.Unfortunately, since the exact meanings of a lot of petroglyphs are still not known, Stasack very cautiously resisted the temptation to assign interpretations to each symbol, but there is still plenty of research and field work done here to satisfy the most avid and curious of petroglyph scholars and students of Hawaiian culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done!
This is a beautifully done book on Hawaiian Petroglyphs.Excellent or both the enthusiast and someone who is has passing interest. It makes for a great coffee table book, as well as one for reference for the more thancurious.I have a collection of books on Hawaiian Petroglyphs, but this isdefinitely one of the better, must haves, for those who are remotelyinterested. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I found this book!
The Petroglyph PapersI guess I'm like most people: I used to read a lot, but started to find I had less and less time to sit down and commit to a whole book (It's hard to put a book down and pick it up a week later and still know what's going on in the plot). "The Petroglyph Papers" was a wonderful alternative. The stories are about 20 pages or less so when I had a few minutes to take a break, I could dive in and read a story beginning to end. There's a nice variety of subjects; romance, history, humor and a little mystery. I also like the fact that these are interesting adult stories, but there is nothinghere I couldn't be seen in public reading! (Unlike some books of short stories).Mr. Best has a nice way with words and is an easy storyteller. My favorite story was "A Good Beginning", but I also really liked "The Fire Keeper" and "The Last One". I'm recommending this to my friends and look forward to more in the future. ... Read more

The first poem of Petroglyphs appeared unbidden in a dream. Like Odin's raven, the poem and its images heralded the coming of a simpler style that dredges up primordial images and myths to create a sacred space where change occurs, language renews itself, and the dead live again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine volume of original verse
Simplicity is not a bad thing, as it attacks the basest emotions with a swiftness rarely enjoyed in today's culture. "Petroglyphs" is a collection of poetry from Keith Harvey looking to embrace this style and the basic mythology that most of humanity knows, using language as a simple and precise tool to deliver the message. A fine volume of original verse, "Petroglyphs" is something to be considered for poetry fans. "Impedimenta": He slowly speaks,/meaning he hesitates/between thought and word./He stutters/and stammers/like the Puca./Yet, even with this malady,/he transforms stored visions/through meditations/of his brother's tongue/into a magic rod. ...
