Helen Sloan Daniels, born 1899, was an amateur archeologist with loads of practical experience, a philanthropist, and a local expert in all things Anasazi. This 52 page pamphlet, with over 25 illustrations uses primary and secondary sources to capture the Falls Creek Anasazi site and the history of excavations there.

Daniels provides details of archeological explorations from the late 19th century up to 1975, with a particular emphasis on some of the important mummy finds and petroglyphs. She brings all sorts of interesting sources to the table, ranging from notes made by individual archeologists, newspaper articles, magazine articles, and even a couple of paragraphs from Ernie Pyle.

Stapled wraps, 28 short chapters, index, and 2 page Bibliography. ... Read more

Product Description
Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a United States national historical park hosting the densest and most exceptional concentration of pueblos in the American Southwest. The park is located in northwestern New Mexico, between Albuquerque and Farmington, in a remote canyon cut by the Chaco Wash. Containing the most sweeping collection of ancient ruins north of Mexico, the park preserves one of the United States' most unique cultural and historic areas. Between AD 900 and 1150, Chaco Canyon was a major center of culture for the Ancient Pueblo Peoples.Chacoans quarried sandstone blocks and hauled timber from great distances, assembling 15 major complexes which remained the largest buildings in North America until the 19th century.Evidence of archaeoastronomy at Chaco has been proposed, with the Sun Dagger petroglyph at Fajada Butte a popular example. Many Chacoan buildings may have been aligned to capture the solar and lunar cycles, requiring generations of astronomical observations and centuries of skillfully coordinated construction ... Chapters: Native American Museums in Minnesota, Grand Portage National Monument, Jeffers Petroglyphs, American Swedish Institute, Pipestone National Monument, Finn Creek Museum, Hjemkomst Center. Excerpt: Grand Portage National Monument - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ojibwe Wigwam at Grand Portage, painted by Eastman Johnson in 1857.As early as 2,000 years ago, Indian Nations probably used Gichi-onigaming, or the Great Carrying Place, to travel from summer homes on Lake Superior to winter hunting grounds in the interior of Minnesota and Ontario. In 1729 Cree guide Auchagah drew a map for some of the first French fur traders, to show them how to reach the "western sea" of Lake Winnipeg. In time, Grand Portage became the gateway into rich northern fur-bearing country, where it connected remote interior outposts to lucrative international markets. The Grand Portage trail is an 8½ mile trail connecting Grand Portage with Fort Charlotte on the Pigeon River. Voyageurs from the interior of Canada would carry their furs by canoe to Fort Charlotte, and portage the bundles of fur to Grand Portage. There they met traders from Montreal, and exchanged the furs for trade goods and supplies. Each canoe "brigade" then returned to its starting place. The fur traders built Fort Charlotte as a trading fort at Grand Portage. There they built the Grand Hall in the French colonial style, which housed their meetings, a general store, and other facilities. Canoe Manned by Voyageurs Passing a Waterfall (Ontario) painted by Frances Anne Hopkins in 1869In mid-July 1802, partners of the North West Company, the most successful fur trade company in North America, met in their Grand Hall at Grand Portage. They voted to move their summer headquarters from the protected shores o... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2323850 ... Read more

Product Description
A major focus in petrology and mineralogy courses is studying and analyzing thin sections of rocks and minerals. Unfortunately, the necessary tools are expensive and scarce in most geology departments. Students need to share the few petrographic and electron microscopes that are available, and as a result, gain much less experience than is necessary. PetroGlyph was designed as an answer to this problem. PetroGlyph is a virtual microscope that provides over 30 virtual thin sections of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The product is a dual platform CD-ROM which includes an accompanying user's manual.

  • Tool bars provided for realistic simulation of actual electron and petrographic microscopes - gives the student realistic experience using these important tools.
  • Self graded quizzes provided for each thin section - student can test his/her progress while working.
  • Makes the CD a self-guided teaching tool.
  • Dual platform CD-ROM - accessible to virtually all schools.
