4-0 out of 5 stars An old fashion approach to reservoir engineering
This is one of the traditional textbooks of reservoir engineering that has survived the pass of time because of its undoubtful quality. The book has a considerable number of solved and proposed exercises and the subjects are presented in a manner very easy to understand. It was originally written at the time in which material balance calculations were the basic algoritm used by reservoir engineers to characterize hidrocarbon reservoirs. As such, this book is organized in terms of the material balance equation: it goes from material balance applied to dry gas, the next chapter is about material balance applied to gas-condensate, then undersaturated and so on, until all diferent fluids are covered. A variety of procedures to do the material balance calculations are presented, many of them of little or no usefulness today and definitely not even mentioned in modern reservoir engineering courses. Important topics such as PVT are dispersed in all the chapters. Other such as pressure testing and inmiscible displacement are covered without adequate depth. Numerical simulation is not even an entry in the subject index. In summary, if your interest is to read about material balance methods in reservoir engineering, this is the book to pick. If you are seeking a general view of the subject then there are better options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Anyone Who Wants to Understand the Industry
I'm an investor studying the oil and gas industry. I found this book extremely informative and very easy to read. For anyone who wants to understand the oil industry, this is a great book to start.I wish the book had newer and better graphics, not to look nicer, but to give readers a more realistic "feel" what some of the fascinating technologies are like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great high level book
This book is a good source of information about the oil industry if you are working in a different field, and curious to learn about the oil industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book for Oilfield Newcomers
In attempting to get quickly up to speed on the oil business for the purpose of participating in a few wells as a (very) small investor, I bought about ten books of various sorts. This is one of them, and has turned out to be the one I refer to the most.

First, let me say that there are two different types of books on drilling for oil/gas.Broadly, they are books that concentrate mainly on the financial and legal structure of oil deals and books that concentrate on where it is and how to get it out of the ground. This book is of the second sort.

The "nontechnical" part of the title is only partly true. Some of the descriptions are sufficiently technical to impart a working understanding of the operations in the field.I, for instance, have been going to our rig (now drilling) and asking questions ("What's that blue thing?"), then coming home and reading about what I was told ("The jar is a section of pipe that either mechanically....").

Same with the drilling reports I receive....I can look up that part of the drilling operation (ie, "sliding") and get a much better understanding of what's happening.A book comes in handy, after all, the tool pushers out on the rigs seem to be men of few words.

There is also a pretty good basic course in petroleum geology in the first thirteen chapters. And, the science (art?) of geophysics gets agood once-over, too, though I confess I've not paid much attention to it yet.

There are chapters on reservoirs, completion, offshore, production, workover, and more, all of which is written at the same level, and much of which I've not read in depth, only scanned.I'll read it as we get there out in the field.

This is a sufficiently information-dense book that actually sitting and reading it from cover to cover won't realistically happen for most folks, no matter how involved. It's more of a textbook and reference resource.

There are lots of diagrams and drawings and pictures (probably three hundred) and they help a lot.The lengthy glossary is OK, though I've not found a petroleum business glossary that seems to be truly comprehensive. (That was written before I found, and ordered, the comprehensive "Dictionary of Petroleum Exploration, Drilling & Production" by who else but Norman J. Hyne, Ph.D.,.... and nope, I have no axe to grind here; and yes, I have noticed that Norman seems to favor long titles). The folks in the oil business rely very heavily on their own language that is a combination of truly technical terminology, oilman slang and everything in between. A glossary is handy. Also be forewarned that the business uses lots of abbreviations, and they seem to change somewhat from company to company, so that a glossary won't ever have all of the abbreviations in use in the field.

There are some other books that do a pretty good job on a more basic level, including "Money In The Ground" by John Orban, III (which also includes deal structure), but, if you are looking for a book that is deep enough to give you a good understanding of the many various aspects of drilling for oil, this is the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for anyone interested in the oi patch
I am considering investing in onshore domestic oil and gas exploration, and sought a book to begin learning about the technical side of the industry. This is the book.Hyne does an excellent job reducing what is clearly a highly complex and tecnhical field down to near-layman's terms.Be forewarned; just like reading descriptions of meats, vegetables and seasonings won't make you a chef, this book won't make it any easier to make a go-no go decision regarding any particular prospect. It will, however, teach you some basic building blocks to help you understand where the risks come from, and really help you understand what a promotor or operator tells you.It is almost mandatory reading if you wish to drill down deeper into other, more technical texts.I have, and would have been lost if it had not been for Norman Hyne's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oil for Dummies - Even I got it!
I work for a MAJOR oil company, but in Government Relations, not on the technical side of the house. Our company has courses such as "Refining for non refiners" and "Drilling for non drillers" meant to give an overview of the operations to people that need to be able to talk intelligently about the industry. This book gives among the finest overviews of the industry that I have seen and makes it easier to do my job. When I first joined I didn't know the difference between upstream and downstream, and the overviews offered in Mr. Hyne's book make me more able to speak intelligently to colleagues, management, customers and partners about our stake in this industry. A must read for anyone who works on the fringes of of oil production. After reading this book, I am somewhat amazed that gasoline does not cost three times its' current price considering all the work it takes to find it, drill for it, extract the stuff from rocks, and get it through a pipeline to a ship to a refinery and then to our gas tanks. This from a guy that gets dirty looks as I drive my Hybrid car into the parking lot of an oil company every morning. ... Book Description
For the practitioner, this volume is a valuable tool for predicting reservoir flow in the most efficient and profitable manner possible, using quantitative methods rather than anecdotal and outdated methods. For the student, this volume offers insight not covered in other textbooks.

Too many approaches in traditional petroleum engineering are based on "ad hoc" and "common sense" methods that have no rigorous mathematical basis. Most textbooks dealing with reservoir engineering do not go into the necessary mathematical detail and depth. This new book by Wilson Chin, a revision of two earlier books published by Gulf Publishing, Modern Reservoir Flow and Well Transient Analysis and Formation Invasion, integrates rigorous mathematical methods for simulating and predicting reservoir flow both near and away from the well.

Predicts reservoir flow to maximize resources, time, and profits

Includes problems and solutions for students

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente learning tool for Petroleum Production Systems
It is an excellent book to understand in detail the petroleum production systems for a person who has some background in the area. It is also helpful as a reference book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
The book is unpractical for the working engineer and the mathematics is simplified calculus which is not understandable to the average practicing engineer, but seems to be in favor of academic types. This is not a book for someone who wants to learn why production equipment works. The chapter on multiphase flow is its only saving grace, but any cheap paper on the subject will say as much. Editorial Review

Book Description
This revised edition of the bestselling Practice of Reservoir Engineering has been written for those in the oil industry requiring a working knowledge of how the complex subject of hydrocarbon reservoir engineering can be applied in the field in a practical manner.Containing additions and corrections to the first edition, the book is a simple statement of how to do the job and is particularly suitable for reservoir/production engineers as well as those associated with hydrocarbon recovery.

This practical book approaches the basic limitations of reservoir engineering with the basic tenet of science: Occam's Razor, which applies to reservoir engineering to a greater extent than for most physical sciences - if there are two ways to account for a physical phenomenon, it is the simpler that is the more useful. Therefore, simplicity is the theme of this volume.

Reservoir and production engineers, geoscientists, petrophysicists, and those involved in the management of oil and gas fields will want this edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best
Dake really were in his best moment to known something and wrote down, here you can find out the state of the art, even now at 2007 of how to do the things in reservoir engineering, planning, following, just read it, you do not loose nothing, always win.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reservoir Engineering
This is a book which teaches an Engineer how to practice reservoir engineering in the oil and gas field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Workable Handbook
Most books on Reservoir Engineering are very university-Academic oriented and its up to us field engineers to decide wether such theories are workable or not in actual practice.
The Practice is a book that might be ranked as a handbook for applicable usage, especially offshore where economics dictates most decision making.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Goldmine of a Book
One of the few true "must read" books in the field.

Mr. Dake's book is unique -- reading it is like working side-by-side with an exceptionally intelligent, erudite, experienced engineer.Despite the author's wry conversational style, this is not a light volume that can be absorbed by speed-reading.The author is sharing decades worth of real-world experience, and it merits close study.

For example, after all the thick volumes that have been written on oil well testing, who would expect that there could be anything left to say?Yet Dake's approach to well testing is eye-opening, and will certainly influence this engineer's approach to designing & interpreting well tests.

Experienced engineers may find themselves wanting to argue with some of the author's opinions & recommendations, but they will conclude that the time they invested in studying this book was well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grand legacy
This book is all that one would expect from Dake, and more. The long awaited update bridges the gaps left as technology has moved on since the original publication. Unfortunately Laurie is no longer with us and this publication is one of many fitting and lasting legacies. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced and Under-illustrated
For 60 bucks, I expected something better than a book slightly larger than a paperback and printed on cheap paper. The book reminds me of a sociology professor I once had who taught his classes from a set of 20-year-old handwritten notes written on a yellow legal pad.And that's what this book is, a set of instructor's notes.

On the plus side, it is a great layman's text on the petroleum industry and one I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn about the industry that fuels our country. However, I'd try to find it in a library first, or borrow my copy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Review for the petroleum industry: a nontechnical guide
The illustrations in this book are terrible. The few illustrations that this book has look like a junior high school computer graphics class made them.If you are a visual learner like me, then this book might not be the best book for your money.Needless to say, I'm disappointed. Also, the book isn't a standard text book size, so don't let the amount of pages trick you into believing that it has a lot of text and info.

3-0 out of 5 stars More a guide to the mechanics of petroleum production
This book is essentially a step by step explication of the hows (and to some extent the whys) of commercial oil and gas exploration and production. Of the books 14 chapters, 13 are devoted primarily to how oil is found, accessed and brought to the surface. There is one chapter on refining, and another on marketing, that together occupy less than 10% of the books total space.

If you are interested in this information, this is a very good source to access it. Subjects ranging from geology to the types of pipes, valves and fitting used to connect a wellhead to a pipeline are discussed in adequate detail to understand the process while at the same time not dwelling on information that would be inconsequential for the non-technical reader. Inside you will learn the relative advantages and disadvantages of miscible vs. water flooding, what type of geology drag bits are particularly effective on (soft formations in coastal and offshore areas), how a resistivity log is generated, and how widely gravel-packing is used as a sand control measure (very widely, it seems).

What you won't learn, however, are the geopolitical, financial, and competitive aspects of the industry. The subject of OPEC, for instance, does receive its own sub-chapter heading, but is given only 6 paragraphs. "Refined and Petrochemical product marketing" is dismissed in three paragraphs.

In sum, the title of the book overstates its breadth. As a non-technical guide to the exploration and production PROCESS, this is a very handy guide. It is not, however, a nontechnical guide to the entire petroleum industry, as it claims.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
A great book for anyone that works in the industry in a supporting role. The book clearly explains the aspects of what it takes to find, develop, produce oil and gas.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent job
Conveys the big picture with enough well-explained technical detail to give you a sense for why. Includes the business implications of various key geological and technical points. The best overview of the petroleum industry that I've come across. I wish other industries had a book like this! ... Read more
