Product Description
This down-to-earth text gives you an edge in open-hole well log interpretation - access to the insight analysts gain from years of experience. Log analysis is a peculiar blend of art and science, requiring the ability to piece the clues provided by each log into the "big picture." That ability comes with experience and training - the kind of step-by-step training this book provides.

Starting with the fundamentals, the book takes you through the study of individual curves on the log and the development of a complete picture to a study of supplementary curves and advanced methods of analysis. By providing a thorough working knowledge of the factors involved in log interpretation - porosity, permeability, resistivity, etc. - the book helps you better understand the assumptions and limitations of analysis that service companies seldom report. In addition, illustrated procedures guide you through each subject, and sample exercises at the end of each chapter give students an opportunity to test their knowledge.

Logs only supply numbers. It takes insight to interpret those numbers correctly and to know which methods work in various situations. Such expertise can mean the difference between making money and losing it. This book gives you that expertise.

Starting with the fundamentals, this text studies individual curves on the log and explains supplementary curves and advanced methods of analysis. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This breakthrough new book may help save countless lives and avoid enormous losses. It presents a methodology for using gas migration to predict earthquakes and explosive gas buildup.Using rigorous scientific investigation and documented worldwide case histories, this remarkable book presents compelling evidence showing that changes in gas rates, composition, and migration accompany the tectronic events preceding earthquakes and their associated seismic events, such as volcanoes and tsunamis.Because these gas parameters are detectable and measurable, they provide an early warning of seismic activity.

Gas Migration is the first book to accumulate, analyze and apply the interdisciplinaryknowledge on gas migration and detail its connection to tectronic, seismic, and geologic phenomena. It combines geological, geochemical, geophysical, seismological, and petroleum engineering insights to demonstrate how gas migration and its associated phenomena can be used in earthquake and environmental geohazard identification and prediction.Topics include-

· Tectonics and Earthquakes
· Gas Migration at Plate Boundaries
· Surface Soil-Gas Surveys
· Faults and Petroleum Reservoirs
· Earthquake Precursors
· Whispering Gases
· Paths and Mechanics of Gas Migration
· Subsidence, Gas Migration, and Seismic Activity
· And much more

With this information, environmental specialists, civil engineers, petroleum geologists, seismologists, and urban planners now have a new and powerful conceptual basis and tool for understanding and perhaps even predicting gas explosions and earthquakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting potential
A fascinating book about a topic that not too many years ago was regarded akin to snake oil. At one point, all that was known about this subject was anecdotal. And since events like earthquakes occur irregularly, it was hard for researchers to systematically study this phenomenon.

But thanks to the authors, a large body of evidence has been collected into this text. It spans the fields of geology and seismology. The hope is that by methodically studying the gaseous outdiffusion from the earth, reliable precursors can be found. Even if these give only a few minutes warning, that is enough for critical power supplies to come online, lifts to unload, and other precautions.

The ever increasing cheapness of sensors and the increasing coverage of wireless networks means that the suggestions in the book might be adopted by dispersing a wide array of wireless sensors at earthquake prone regions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book...lots of good examples
Book is good.I am a student at TTU (petroleum engineering) and found the book to have great programming examples.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old reservoir engineering
I have read the book and found that it basically covers the state of the art of "classical" reservoir engineering of about the 60's or 70's, with some material taken from papers published in the 80's and 90's. It is outdated to a great extent.

The virtue of this book is that it reviews a wide range of topics like MBEs, IPRs, basic reservoir fluid properties, etc. Good for undergrads taking courses in reservoir engineering.

The statements at the back side of the cover (second edition) are misleading. This book does not contain "all of the information and insight a reservoir engineer must have to do the job right", nor is it "the complete resource for students and professionals in the petroleum industry". This book is only at the introductory level and there are many other books like Dake and Craft & Hawkins which cover almost the same topics with more detail.

If it is an extensive reference book what you are looking for, I would rather recommend the Petroleum Engineering Handbook. It is more comprehensive and can cost you about the same price or less (if you are an SPE member).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to find all basic topics on reservoir engineering
I've seen that all topics on reservoir engineering have been covered in sufficient detail and very systematically.I strongly reccommed the book to those looking for a starting book on reservoir engineering and to those who, after a while, got lost among SPE papers and specialized books to come back to the backbone of the issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the Fundamentals Are Covered
This book is comprehensive and great for practical application.Has a guide for predicting oil reservoir performance from analysis of oil recovery mechanisms and performance calculations. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a guide to the use of inverse theory for estimation and conditional simulation of flow and transport parameters in porous media. It describes the theory and practice of estimating properties of underground petroleum reservoirs from measurements of flow in wells, and it explains how to characterize the uncertainty in such estimates. Early chapters present the reader with the necessary background in inverse theory, probability and spatial statistics. The book demonstrates how to calculate sensitivity coefficients and the linearized relationship between models and production data. It also shows how to develop iterative methods for generating estimates and conditional realizations. The text is written for researchers and graduates in petroleum engineering and groundwater hydrology and can be used as a textbook for advanced courses on inverse theory in petroleum engineering. It includes many worked examples to demonstrate the methodologies and a selection of exercises. ... Read more

Product Description
Understanding the phase behavior of the various fluids present in a petroleum reservoir is essential for achieving optimal design and cost-effective operations in a petroleum processing plant. Taking advantage of the authors’ experience in petroleum processing under challenging conditions, Phase Behavior of Petroleum Reservoir Fluids introduces industry-standard methods for modeling the phase behavior of petroleum reservoir fluids at various stages in the process.

Keeping mathematics to a minimum, the book discusses sampling, characterization, compositional analyses, and equations of state used to simulate various pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) properties of reservoir fluids. The coverage of phase behavior at reservoir conditions includes simulating minimum miscibility pressures and compositional variations depending on depth and temperature gradients. Developed in conjunction with several oil companies using experimental data for real reservoir fluids, the authors present new models for the characterization of heavy undefined hydrocarbons, transport properties, and solids precipitation.

An up-to-date overview of recently developed methods for modern petroleum processing, Phase Behavior of Petroleum Reservoir Fluids presents a streamlined approach for more accurate analyses and better predictions of fluid behavior under variable reservoir conditions. ... Read more
