They told me exactly what it would be and it came just the way they said it would. I received it much sooner than I expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
This textbook is an excellent resource for any medical professional interested in how medications work and their possible adverse effects or effect on patient behavior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pharmacology in rehabilitation
Excellent book! Well-written, very easy to understand. This book covers basic neurology, anatomy, and physiology, thus provides an excellent review! It also explains very well in details how drugs act on the body. Highly recommed to physical therapy students, medicine students, and the other medical discipline students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is this book worth it?
I would assume that the majority of people who would buy this book are taking a class in pharmacology. I have had alot of recommended text books that were not worth even taking out of the wrapper, but this book is not one of them. The author's actually spent the time to organize and gather relatively current information and then put a hard cover on it. It's getting harder and harder to get that combination. I gave this a 5 star rating because it really will be a book you will keep and reference after the class is over. ... Read more

  • Covers the pharmacology of all major classes of drugs, emphasizing side effects to expect, side effects to report, drug interactions, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Pharmacology for Nurses
This product was new and still in plastic wrap. I saved quite a bit of money by online purchasing. Amazon.com has been great in helping with my education!

2-0 out of 5 stars Many Answer Key Errors
I was assigned this book for an online pharmacology course connected with a nursing re-entry program. I have found an unacceptable number of errors in this book and believe it can be dangerous for nursing students to use. The publishers should certainly be required to immediately make an erratum available with corrections. I am only about a third of the way through my program and note these errors:

p79 Exercise on sliding scale insulin dosage
**first answer should be TEN units (7+3) (book says 11)
**second answer should be ELEVEN units (7+4 - not 8...)
**p80 example 3 answer should be .66 ml NOT .75

p82 Exercise on drops per minute should say 60gtt PER ML NOT per hour at top of page. Also section is on gtt/min yet the answers are calling for mL/hr...

p261 Q3 answer should be 0.625 NOT 0.75 as noted in answer key.

p 355 paragraph on "fostering health maintenance" lists "high cholesterol foods" as "...fried foods, fatty desserts, and nuts..." While also saying that cholesterol is an animal product and not found in plants.

The book has excellent well written sections which make these errors look like a sloppy lack of editing and quality control.

Product Description

Amy Karch has found that students learn best when concepts are built upon each other, growing from simple to complex, building on a foundation of understanding.
Organized by body systems, this heavily illustrated book organizes essential nursing pharmacology information into focused, easy-to-learn steps. Building key concepts upon each other the text gives students a solid foundation of understanding.Easy to understand drug prototype boxes are integrated as well as integrated content summaries. The fifth edition includes a completely revamped art program with more images depicting drug actions than any of the book's competitors. The fifth edition also underwent major reorganization to streamline the very functional "Focus on" theme for drug use across the lifespan, cultural and gender considerations, evidence-based practice, patient teaching, herbal and alternative therapies and dosage calculations; a new box, "Focus on Safe Medication Administration;" and totally revamped "Drugs in Focus" table for each classification of drugs. Focused content and focused features equal a focused student.
In addition, we've expanded and updated content on psychiatric agents (includes new indications, cautions and precautions), and significantly expanded information on AIDS and therapeutic management. Drug discussions include therapeutic actions and indications, pharmacokinetics, contraindications and cautions and adverse effects. Detailed rationales are presented throughout. Each chapter opens with Learning Objectives and a Glossary of Key Terms, and ends with NCLEX-style questions, and contains a case study-based critical thinking exercise that sets up a situation, shows critical thinking, and then presents a discussion and case-based nursing care guide. Features like this make the book an essential teaching tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRS book
Traditional BRS books. They're great. Not much more can be said about them.

1-0 out of 5 stars too many mistakes
This is not for board review and not exactly high yield for finals either. It has way too many mistakes for being the fifth edition. The ANS section is by far the most unwell written chapter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too detailed
This is a good supplement to class notes and First Aid for pharm if you need to go above and beyond. However, it is very detailed compared with other titles in the BRS series. I found it too detailed for my pharmacology class and too time consuming for board prep.

4-0 out of 5 stars New edition
This is a new edition.Disregard the other reviews about the older, outdated edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book.
I was one of the few people in my medical school class that liked this book.I used it as a supplement to my class notes and pharmcards to study for pharmacology. I used it in addition to FirstAid to study for the boards.I found it to be excellent.I like the outline format. I found that it hit upon the pertain side effects and interactions, and I liked the organization.Mechanism of action descriptions were adequate for nearly all questions I was asked. Most in my class used the Lippicontt Illustrated Reviews Pharmacology book. But, they weren't #1 in their class for both Pharm I and Pharm II in medical school. I was.It is a good book.It is a little old now, and is certainly over-due for a new edition. I hope they come out with one. This book presents the facts concisely without a lot of fluff.Give it a shot. And, its cheaper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Pharmacology students
It is a great pharmacology textbook for introductory students. It goes in-depth enough for you to understand the mechanisms behind pharmacological processes. Most likely this review isn't necessary as this will be required for whatever class you are taking but if you are independently thinking about a pharmacology textbook, I would recommend this one. It comes with online material for further instruction as well.

Product Description
Written by and for nurse practitioners, this practical textbook focuses on what primary care providers need to learn and practice drug therapy. With an overall emphasis on patient teaching and health promotion, you will learn how to provide effective patient teaching about medications and how to gain patient compliance. Drug coverage focuses on "key drugs" rather than "prototype drugs," so you can find important information about the most commonly used drugs rather than the first drug in each class. You will also find discussions on the legal and professional issues unique to nurse practitioners and other primary care providers. The 3rd edition also features an expanded emphasis on established clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based practice, plus two new chapters that cover drugs for ADHD and drugs for dementia.

  • UNIQUE! Written specifically for nurse practitioners with an overall emphasis on patient teaching and health promotion.
  • UNIQUE! Covers specific topics such as prescriptive authority, role implementation, and writing prescriptions.
  • Presents comprehensive coverage of the drugs most commonly prescribed in - and the issues most relevant to - primary care practice.
  • UNIQUE! Identifies the Top 200 drugs in chapter openers with a special icon and covers them in-depth to familiarize you with the most important, need-to-know drug information.
  • Uses a consistent heading scheme for each prototype drug discussion to make it easier to learn and understand key concepts.
  • Includes an introductory chapter on "Design and Implementation of Patient Education" that highlights content on patient teaching and compliance.
  • Includes specific "Patient Education" sections in each drug chapter.
  • Provides extensive coverage of drug therapy for special populations to alert you to special considerations based on age, pregnancy, race and other factors.
  • A separate chapter on "Complementary and Alternative Therapies" discusses the available complementary and alternative modalities, including detailed information on actions, uses, and interactions of commonly used herbs.
  • Drug Overview tables at the beginning of each chapter outline the classifications of drugs discussed and provide a handy reference of drug classes and subclasses, generic names, and trade names.
  • Clinical Alerts highlight essential information that primary care providers must remember in order to avoid serious problems, including cautions for prescribing, information about drug interactions, or warnings about particularly ominous adverse effects.
  • An entire unit covers drugs for health promotion to introduce you to drugs commonly seen in outpatient primary care settings and to prepare you for practice in a society increasingly focused on health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Includes separate chapters on Immunizations and Biologicals, Weight Management, Smoking Cessation, Vitamins and Minerals, Over-the-Counter Medications, and Complementary and Alternative Therapies.

  • Drug coverage focuses on "key drugs" rather than "prototype drugs," since prototype drugs are technically the first drug in a given class but not always the best, newest, or most commonly prescribed drug.
  • Separate chapter on "Treatment Guidelines and Evidence-Based Decision-Making" provides practical guidelines for using the current best evidence to make decisions about the care of individual patients.
  • All content extensively reviewed by a PharmD consultant to ensure the most accurate, current, and clinically relevant pharmacology content.
  • Includes separate chapters on drugs to treat ADHD and dementia in order to expand on the current treatments available for these two common conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Maybe it's because I have the second edition but I thought this book was clear, concise, and easy to understand unlike many other reviews.I'm not in nursing so I skipped the parts of the chapter on the nursing process and wished there were more detailed descriptions of how the drugs worked. However, for nursing this books seems great. It definitely gave me even more respect than I already had for all that nurses do.

2-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected

So, if you're reading this book to update or to gain information about Pharmacology, I would not suggest it.
