Product Description
The book is devoted to the physics of plasma at high density, which has been compressed so strongly that the effects of interparticle interactions and non-ideality govern its behavior. Interest in this non-traditional plasma has been generated in recent years when states of matter with high concentration of energy became accessible experimentally as the basis of modern technologies and facilities. The greatest part of the matter in the Universe is in this exotic state. In this book, the methods of generation and diagnostics of strongly coupled plasmas are presented, along with the main theoretical methods and experimental results on thermodynamical, kinetic and optical properties. Particular attention is given to fast developing modern directions of strongly coupled plasma physics such as metallization of dielectrics and dielectrization of metals, non-neutral plasmas, dusty plasmas and their crystallization. The book is written for physicists and astrophysicists, engineers, and material scientists. ... Read more

Product Description

Complex plasmas are dusty plasmas in which the density and electric charges of the dust grains are sufficiently high to induce long-range grain-grain interactions, as well as strong absorption of charged-plasma components. Together with the sources replenishing the plasma such systems form a highly dissipative thermodynamically open system that exhibits many features of collective behaviour generally found in complex systems. Most notably among them are self-organized patterns such as plasma crystals, plasma clusters, dust stars and further spectacular new structures. Beyond their intrinsic scientific interest, the study of complex plasmas grows in importance in a great variety of fields, ranging from space-plasma sciences to applied fields such as plasma processing, thin-film deposition and even the production of computer chips by plasma etching, in which strongly interacting clouds of complex plasmas can cause major contamination of the final product.

Intended as first introductory but comprehensive survey of this rapidly emerging field, the present book addresses postgraduate students as well as specialist and nonspecialist researchers with a general background in either plasma physics, space sciences or the physics of complex systems.

Product Description
This monograph presents a comprehensive description of the theoretical foundations and experimental applications of spectroscopic methods in plasma physics research. The first three chapters introduce the classical and quantum theory of radiation, with detailed descriptions of line strengths and high density effects. The next chapter describes theoretical and experimental aspects of spectral line broadening. The following five chapters are concerned with continuous spectra, level kinetics and cross sections, thermodynamic equilibrium relations, radiative energy transfer, and radiative energy losses. The book concludes with three chapters covering the basics of various applications of plasma spectroscopy to density and temperature measurements and to the determination of some other plasma properties. Over one thousand references not only guide the reader to original research covered in the chapters, but also to experimental details and instrumentation. This will be an important text and reference for all those working on plasmas in physics, optics, nuclear engineering, and chemistry, as well as astronomy, astrophysics and space physics. ... Product Description
This book focuses on the characteristics of optical radiation, or a spectrum, emitted by various plasmas. In plasma, the same atomic species can produce quite different spectra, or colors depending on the nature of the plasma. This book gives a theoretical framework, by which a particular spectrum can be interpreted correctly and coherently. The uniqueness of the book lies in its comprehensive treatment of the intensity distribution of spectral lines and the population density distribution among the atomic levels, in plasma. It is intended to provide beginners with a good perspective of the field, laying out the physics in an extremely clear manner, starting from an elementary level.A very useful feature of the book is the asterisked sections and chapters which can be skipped by readers, who only wish to gain a quick and basic introduction to plasma spectroscopy. It will also be very useful to researchers working actively in the field, acting as a guide for carrying out experiments and interpreting experimental observations. ... Read more

Product Description
Space plasma is so hot that the atoms break up into charged particles which then become trapped and stored in magnetic fields. When critical conditions are reached the magnetic field breaks up, releasing a large amount of energy and causing dramatic phenomena. The largest space plasma activity events observed in the solar system occur on the Sun, when coronal mass ejections expel several billion tons of plasma mass into space. This 2007 book provides a coherent and detailed treatment of the physical background of large plasma eruptions in space. It provides the background necessary for dealing with space plasma activity, and allows the reader to reach a deeper understanding of this fascinating natural event. The book employs both fluid and kinetic models, and discusses the applications to magnetospheric and solar activity. This will form an interesting reference for graduate students and academic researchers in the fields of astrophysics and plasma physics. ... Read more

Product Description

This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed during the last two centuries by many experimental discoveries and from the theoretical side by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles.

It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in more detail and in particular lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed more thoroughly.

Many examples and problems with solutions should induce the reader to an intense active cooperation.

2-0 out of 5 stars It covers almost all, But Unispiring
As an introduction to quantum Physics it covers almost all the important things, however the book is boring, it goes straight to thinks and sometimes the explanations are incomplete, not a good book at all if you want to feel amazed by physics, plain.

Editorial Review

Product Description
There has been considerable interest in recent years in finding methods to efficiently generate large volumes of atmospheric pressure air plasmas at modest temperatures below 2000 K with electron number densities of the order of 1013 cm-3. These reactive air plasmas have numerous applications based on their medical, biological, environmental, electromagnetic, and aerodynamic effects. There is considerable industrial interest in air plasmas for the benefits it can offer to existing and potential new processes as they do not require a vacuum enclosure and or additional feed gases.

This book reviews recent advances in the generation and maintenance of atmospheric-pressure plasmas with a special emphasis on plasmas in ambient air and their applications. The book provides a state-of-the-art summary of methods to generate and sustain atmospheric-pressure plasmas in air, diagnose and characterize the plasmas in terms of electron temperature, electron energy distribution functions, electron density, neutral and ion temperatures and energy distribution functions, elucidate the electron kinetics and the key plasma chemical reaction processes in these plasmas, highlight the latest development in modeling and simulation, and point to the most promising current and future technological applications of atmospheric-pressure air plasmas.

The book will cover results of work that has been in the forefront of research and development in the United States and elsewhere over the last few years, and will be critical reading for graduate students and researchers in industry and academia. Furthermore, since this is a technical field of international interest, it is anticipated that there will be a significant international audience for this book, particularly in Europe, Japan, and Korea. ...
