2-0 out of 5 stars Adequate Review, Inadequate Details
Purchased this review book for oral examinations during residency as well as preparation for Boards. There appears to be adequate breadth of material, however poor organization of topics makes coherent studying difficult. The picture format is good for preparation of personal thought process, however the text is way too Pre-op oriented and minimal, minimal operative management, complications, and treatment options. The book purports an algorithmic approach to each problem, however the algorithms at the end of each chapter contain minimal information, do not direct the decision process, and do not fulfill the meaning of "algorithm".

Furthermore, there are many typographical errors, incorrect oncological treatments and staging, e.g melanoma staging with centimeters, etc.The diagrams that depict procedures are inadequate, such as an Antia-Buch diagram that truly does not depict the procedure and Rhomboid flap diagrams that do not accurate reflect which flap is elevated, etc.Furthermore, in cases where a more diagramatical description of a local flap would be beneficial, there is none.I feel that for a quick picture based review of what we may see on boards this is adequate, however must be supplemented by up to date and correct information.I would not recommend purchase of this book and would recommend a more thorough editing of the material presented. ... Product Description
The deceptively simple supermarket choice echoed in the title of this timely book looms large in a Western consumer society that is clearly on a collision course with the planet's life-support systems. Do we clearcut forests, process pulp, and bleach it with chlorine to make paper bags? Or do we make a pact with demon hydrocarbon, refining ancient sunlight into handy plastics? About half the total volume of America's municipal solid waste is packaging-at least 300 pounds per person each year-and the "upstream" costs in energy and resources used to make packaging are even more alarming. In this fascinating look at the world of packaging, writer Daniel Imhoff and photographer/designer Roberto Carra give consumers, product designers, and policymakers the information we need to take steps toward a more sustainable future. They delve into the histories and life cycles of packaging materials and look at the countless ways that packaged goods shape our culture. Using case studies, they explore the positive trends that are changing packaging, including producer responsibility and "take-back" laws being enacted in Europe; the eco-design movement; plant-based plastics; labeling to disclose the ecological and social impacts of products; and producing and consuming locally and in bulk versus the wasteful global exchange of single-serving containers. Carra's remarkable color photographs illustrate both the important functions of packaging and its many unintended consequences around the globe. Despite recent advances, the packaging problem keeps growing, Imhoff warns. Real solutions must incorporate new (or rediscovered) ways of producing, distributing, packaging, consuming, reusing, and reprocessing products and materials. As consumers, there's much we can do, and Paper or Plastic? offers a checklist for consumer action, along with resources for information on products, programs, and policy options. It's one book that is truly worth the recycled paper it's printed on. Illustrations: 30 color photographs, 30 duotones ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Earth Justice - Book Reviews
Daniel Imhoff's book chronicling the search for "solutions to an overpackaged world" is laid out like a text book from a Sustainability 101 course, but mostly manages to avoid the dryness that would imply, though the acronym or jargon-wary may find themselves a bit dizzy. Imhoff offers a thorough, well-thought-out glimpse into the perils and potentials of packaging, the "skin of commerce." He starts with a look at how packaging arrived at this state, describing it as product of a marketing arms race, then describes how factors such as the demands of "big box" stores (oversized PVC blister packs to prevent the theft of small items, for instance) and international commerce have added to the dilemma. Imhoff also takes a hard look at the myths and realities of recycling and eco-labels, which is worth the price of this book alone. The book is interspersed with examples of manufacturers rising to the challenge of better packaging as well as some experiments in waste reduction undertaken by other countries. Overall, this book offers a clearer understanding of the complexities of packaging in the modern world, and is recommended.

We all know the feeling. We are in the supermarket with our jumble of purchases and the cashier casually asks, "Paper or plastic?" What a choice. Destroy more trees or use more oil? Bravo to author Daniel Imhoff for tackling the question that has many a concerned citizen frozen in stores throughout North America with sweaty palms and racing hearts.
The answer to the paper or plastic dilemma, for those of you that just can't wait to read the book is: neither. Imhoff explains what we need to do is, "Eliminate, reduce, refill, and recycle as much as possible." And while you are reducing use a reusable cloth tote bag. All the time, no exceptions.
Paper or Plastic: Searching for Solutions to an Overpackaged World is the definitive guide to understanding packaging and learning how to reduce our patterns of consumption. Imhoff gives a succinct background on the packaging dilemma and how much energy and resources it takes to produce each type of disposable packaging we commonly use. For example: to produce 1 ton of paper consumes over 98 tons of resources -think of that the next time you reach for a single use paper bag or single use coffee cup. Paper or Plastic reports 270 million tons of oil and gas are used each year to manufacture plastic packaging in the USA alone.
Paper or Plastic is a well-researched book, filled with interesting facts in a well-designed package from the award-winning team at Watershed Media. Without question, Paper or Plastic is the best book on the market about packaging and unnecessary consumption.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid examples of innovative approaches
Paper Or Plastic is filled with excellent, detailed and inspiring examples of innovative ways to reduce environmental impacts of packaging. But the principles discussed in the examples extend beyond packaging, and as someone involved in product design, I found many ideas that I could apply to non-packaging efforts also. If you are in the realm of product development, this is a top-notch book to read.

It has its share of doom and gloom statistics, but for the most part the book is action and solution oriented, giving solid advice and approaches backed up by success stories. Many of these examples are from large, mainstream companies, and not the same old chestnuts that we hear about all the time at sustainability conferences or in magazines about niche companies -- valid ideas, but often not scalable to large companies.

The authors have clearly done their homework digging around in the bowels of large company supply chains. Some of what they talk about is not attention-grabbing headline-making stuff, but it is the necessary nuts and bolts of making steady improvements toward less environmental impact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Envisioning a new environmental package design, by Dave Newcorn
Since innovative thinking on ways to balance packaging and the environment is always in short supply, I was curious to see if Paper or Plastic: Searching for Solutions to an Overpackaged World by Daniel Imhoff would contribute something new. Though the book did indeed start out as a polemic against packaging, it quickly changed into a more productive--and provocative--course.

Imhoff, Executive Director of Watershed Media, reports on what is realistically possible in terms of the latest technology, from a new generation of zero-effluent mini-mills to the latest thinking in natural capitalism, eco-intelligence, design, and biomimicry, all as applied to packaging. (The biomimicry section alone will spur many ideas for the creative package designer.) Imhoff also covers the newest generation of bioplastics from a variety of suppliers, reviewing pros and cons of each material. Case studies show green packaging done right.

Also included: a comprehensive checklist for assessing the environmental impact of packaging before the designer makes a selection decision. The list includes attributes designers should keep in mind when selecting materials.
This is a well-written, fairly reported, attractively put-together book that deserves a place on the bookshelf of any designer or materials specifier. The 168-page trade paperback is available for $16.95.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book review of Paper or Plastic by Scott Carlson
There are environmental causes that stir the emotions--the plight of whales and baby seals, the fate of redwoods, or the metastasis of suburbia. But Daniel Imhoff would point out that the most pervasive and fastest-growing environmental problem is so commonplace it's invisible: packaging. Styrofoam containers from a fast-food meal, the anti-theft blister packaging that encapsulates retail electronics, or the common aluminum can and plastic bottle are all part of a waste stream that composes some 300 pounds of garbage per person per year, headed straight from the shelf to the landfill.
Apparently mindful of the fact you can read only so much about polystyrene peanuts and polyethylene bottles, Imhoff has organized his book into punchy little essays, short case studies, and colorful charts that survey the extent of the packaging problem, along with a range of solutions that some companies are trying.

Imhoff points out that packaging is increasingly the product itself--a method corporations use to market feelings of familiarity, uniformity, or purity. To illustrate, he would have you consider evolution of the egg: It is nature's perfect packaged food source, with its container, the shell, being durable yet entirely biodegradable. For years, eggs came in molded paper pulp. Now the most expensive of them frequently come in molded plastic trays, derived from petroleum products. (Nature's Promise, which markets eco-friendly eggs, requests on its tray that you recycle the plastic packaging, even though few municipalities take such containers.) And lately eggs come as pre-scrambled "pasteurized real egg product," in capped cartons at premium prices--far removed from the simple egg. The packaging will be with us decades, maybe eons, after the egg has been cracked, scrambled, and eaten.

As its title implies, packaging choices for environmentalists are dilemmas, with few simple solutions: Would you rather bag your groceries in the products of clear-cut forests or petroleum? He holds up companies such as Aveda, the Minneapolis-based cosmetics company, as pioneers. Aveda worked to eliminate toxic or less-recyclable plastics from its packaging line, and strove for 100 percent recycled plastics in its containers, risking profit margins in the process. Other companies are experimenting with novel products, such as biodegradable plastics.

But even these are merely "less bad" solutions in a world full of packaging waste. Imhoff concedes that packaging offers a good deal of convenience and that making upright choices involves giving up some of that convenience. He recommends carrying a mug and a reusable water bottle, eating in instead of getting takeout, buying in bulk (which reduces packaging waste), buying from local farmers and farmers' markets, and toting around cloth bags. When the cashier asks the question in the book's title, Imhoff suggests, hand over a cloth bag and say, "Neither." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical and good basic book
Gingery books are always good do it your self books. Of course you needs tools as you would to build any machine. Small injection molding machines go for about $1000. To build one you will have to buy some stuff like the heating cartridges and steel for the parts. Half the fun of a Gingery book is actually building the machines. So for a $100 in supplies and a day to a week making and assembling the parts you will have a working machine. Also Gingery books are easy to read and understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
For as interesting as the promo describes this book, it is a very nothing book. You soon realize that the device the author built has absolutely no practical purpose other than to form the basis for the book.

This book is a good basic book on plastic molding
but has nothing about the use of magna plastics and polymer films
in casting or injection molding.

2-0 out of 5 stars A fun project...but cheaper just buying a small IM machine!
A quick read and definitely enjoyable in knowing how "possible" it is to make your own 1/2 oz. injection molding machine.Only major problem...You need a few tools; probably a bandsaw, welding equipment, a good drill press and most likely a lathe. But then again, if you want to make some molds for the IM machine you probably already have the tools I listed! The point is, it's a good learning project, but you're better off buying your own small IM machine for a few hundred bucks...

3-0 out of 5 stars For the Enivornmentalist Handyman
at 120+ pages, Secrets of building a plastic injection molding machine, is a pretty quick read. I haven't gotten around to trying to build such a device yet, cause honestly I've never built anything before..

a fewwords though. The deivce once built works with strips of plastics you'vecollected from old recyclables around the house.. soda bottles, etc.. whichis pretty cool.

the machine itself however consists of about 6 pages, ofwhich 80 % is screws and bolts and washers.. The back of the books has avery small list of possible suppliers for some of the more unique parts, and it looks like the machine itself will take abour roughly 100 bucks tomake, give or take a little.

So if you've already built a few things thenby all means this is gonna be a good time for you, to expand what you cando.

if you haven't touched a screw driver lately, you might want tostart somewhere else... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect match of talent and character
This book is insanely fun -- the old, original Plastic Man series by Jack Cole had its ups and downs, but at its best, the wacky visual and creative genius was absolutely unique. Kyle Baker, whose own style tends towards the exaggerated and elastic to begin with, is a perfect artist to take this character on, and this first set of stories is a real doozy. Each panel bursts with kooky ideas and great visual gags; the book is filled with sly pop culture references, and hilarious inside jokes about the comic book subculture. It's a lot of fun. Plus, that new FBI agent is a total babe. (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain books reviews)

4-0 out of 5 stars Not really a fan of this style or of Plastic Man but...
I am not really a fan of either Plastic Man or of Kyle Baker's over the top Ren and Stimpy-esque cartoon style. However, I had to pick up the plastic book with Plastic Man all over it so that it looks like you are actually holding Plastic Man trying to hide out as the book itself!

Once I started reading this one, I must admit that I got into it. The artistic style grew on me and Plastic Man became less annoying (sort of...). This one is full of lots of sight gags and off-color comments and references.

I was entertained and that's all that counts. I give it a "B".

5-0 out of 5 stars Plastic Man as he should be
When I saw "Plastic Man: On the Lam" I originally passed it over because the cover is absolutely horrible. The cover is supposed to look as if it's composed of Plastic Man's stretched body. It's even literally made of plastic but it looks really bad which is a shame because the contents are terrific. The reason I purchased the book was because the series won the Eisner award for best new series and I've tended to do well with Eisner award winners.

On the Lam is a compilation of the first six issues of the recent Plastic Man series, written and drawn by Kyle Baker. My first and only experience with Kyle Baker's talent was a pair of short pieces done for the Bizarro books. Kyle has a very clean, bright artistic style that more resembles animation cells than comic panels. His only weakness is when he tries to draw realistic looking characters like in the brief appearance of the JLA.

One of the problems with writing Plastic Man is trying to keep Plas sufficiently goofy without turning him into a goofball. Some of the Justice League writers allowed him to descend deep into ridiculousness. Plastic Man, like Captain Marvel, really needs to be placed into his own separate world. Kyle does a great job of establishing the classic Plastic Man universe, balancing cartooniness with a bit of an edge. Poor Plas ends up taking quite a beating in this adventure. He's stretched with hooks, frozen, nearly suffocated, eaten by an alligator and has his rear end melted with acetate. There was always a certain darkness behind the colorful plastic wrapping, after all Plastic Man is one of the few heroes who started his career as a criminal. Seeing a dead man's head flattened or Woozy Winky bleeding after a severe beating is jarring but that's the way Plastic Man comics are and why he's such a unique character.

Kyle Baker's interpretation is one of the best I've seen. It's filled with legitimate humor and terrific art. I may be dense but somehow I didn't see the twist ending coming. Kudos to Kyle Baker for reinvigorating my interest in Plastic Man and kudos to DC Comics for releasing a truly unique and creative series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, to say the least
I just can't agree with the rave reviews of this book. I loved Plastic Man in the old Batman comics and in his own books, and Plastic Sam was unique in that it was one of the funniest Mad parodies yet still remained true to the original in a way that Mad's other victims couldn't claim. But the art here is simply pathetic! Yes, it packs a good laugh or two, but I find the lack of care put into backgrounds and lettering (apparently done by a computer program) to be unacceptable. Most backgrounds seem to be a simple color wash that could be anywhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars STUNNING COMIC ART

Comic aficionados have a surprise in store with Eisner Award winner Kyle Baker's take on who else but PLASTIC MAN!(In a plastic cover).

Originally created in 1941 by Jack Cole Plastic Man was a flexible super hero, to say the least. He could bend, twist like a pretzel, contort his very pliable body into all kinds of shapes to make sure that good conquered evil.Plas, as he was known to friends was often found in the company of his pudgy buddy, Woozy Winks.Popular for perhaps 16 years, Plas is a cult favorite today.

With his reintroduction by Baker (who also copped the Harvey Award) Plas may gain a new following among both children and adults.Plastic Man holds the first six issue of this rubbery crusader's exploits.

Plas is in a jam as he's framed for a crime he didn't commit.Even his pals are convinced he's the guilty party with Superman exclaiming, "Plastic Man a criminal!By the moons of Krypton! How could we have been so blind?"It's easy to believe Plas has done wrong as he has a shady past - he was once known asno-gooder, Eel O'Brien.

With only Woozy to assist Plas has to find the real culprit.

Plastic Man as seen through the eyes of Kyle Baker is pure parody delivered in eye-popping color.

The paperback version appears to be a photo-reproduction and not an original press run. The illustrations and photos are very poorly reproduced. The publisher should not be charging this outrageous price for such a shoddy reproduction. I'm sure the pictures and illustrations may have helped in presenting the information but most were so bad as to be more of a distraction than an aid. If this is a required text for a class try and find a hard bound copy. Hopefully the photos will be properly reproduced. As for the text itself, this book seems quite in need of a refresh for a publication date as recent as 2005.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of content but poor quality book
I've been reading this book as part of an engineering Masters program. It covers a wealth of topics related to plastics, but I've not been impressed at all by the quality of the book itself. The pages look as if they've been photocopied instead of printed, so much so that all the images (which are black & white only) are washed out and nearly impossible to identify. The author also chose some ridiculous pictures, including one of a plate of spaghetti (to describe amorphous plastics) and a cake. I'm pretty sure anyone reading this book already knows what spaghetti and cake look like!

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful
A very well written text book. The complete story on plastics and plastics processing, clearly stated.

He includes historical and application/business viewpoints, in addition to chemical and manufacturing.

Professor Strong gets an A+!

5-0 out of 5 stars For any one, even without a Major in science
The book is great, it shuold be called plastics for dummies. It explain everything in a simple matter and focuses on the aplication of the concepts. Great for anyone with engineering or technical knowledge or who needs to learn the who's or why's of plastics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Refrence, Easy to Navigate and Read

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL
How wonderful this book is, and with the plactic templets already there. You can use for hand or machine sewing. I love it and will deal with this seller quote often.

2-0 out of 5 stars A patchwork quilt pattern book
I ordered this quite recently and to be honest found it pretty disappointing.

It was of course written in the mid 1980s so do not expect any of the modern techniques of rotary cutting and paper piecing. The instructions would be barely enough to get a beginner going as they are written in text with no how to illustrations, but they are of the most basic and quite old fashioned, requiring you to use templates to cut out each piece individually with scissors.Only the briefest detail is given on how to machine piece and how to hand piece using a running stitch and the final instructions for binding the quilts with four separate pieces of fabric, one for each side, added on consecutively, were never good practice at any time in the history of quiltmaking. The variety of patterns is quite good but unfortunately there are some eight pointed star blocks including Lemoyne Star which have been drawn incorrectly as four patch blocks.

There are no pictures of finished quilts, even hand drawn. This book was written in the days before everybody had computers and although the illustrations of the blocks are good and clear what you get is instructions for 27 quilts all exactly the same size, with the same size border and the same block layout and no consideration given for the different kinds of patterns included in the book.

Compared with the quality of today's quilt books I think Dover should consider withdrawing this one as it doesn't hold a candle to most of the quilt pattern books available today or indeed others they published around the same time as this one.

I would recommend that any beginner considering a new book avoid this one and consider perhaps Lynne Edwards's Sampler Quilt series and perhaps one of the Jinny Beyer books, which will give plenty of information and lots of patterns, and which are well illustrated and beautifully produced with clear illustrations of work in progress, patterns and finished quilt galleries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Patterns
The patterns (as the title of the book indicates) are the traditional ones(Ohio Star, Eight Point Star, Clay's Choice)that more experienced quilters will already be famliar with, but it does have those nifty plastic templates (four of them--you'd be surprised how much you can do with so little)which in my opinion are worth the money all by themselves. If you're a real beginner and the patterns are new to you, I would recommend you combine this with Laura Erlich's Complete Idiot's Guide, which I just LOVE. She gives really clear simple instructions on how to piece together the same designs in this book, which this is a little weak on, if you don't already know what you're doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Make -- Yes they are!
The pictures and descriptions are easy to follow. The templates are heavy plastic to stand up to the many hours of cutting I will put them through! The patterns included in this book will keep quilters of all levels busy. Make one block or an entire quilt - the directions for both are included. ... Read more

Product Description
Plastic Culture explores the world of toys: why we love them, what they represent, and why there is a growing market for "designer" and "art" toys aimed at adults.

In this book, British author Woodrow Phoenix takes a look at our relationship to toys in the twenty-first century, with particular reference to Japan—an exporter of both merchandise and ideas. Plastic toys based on Japanese comics, movies, and TV shows, from Astro Boy, Godzilla, and Gatchaman, to Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, and Pokémon have had a powerful effect on the imaginations and markets of the West, and have kick-started trends in design and pop culture that have crossed from Japan to the West and back East again.

Brimming with lavish, full-color illustrations of cult and limited-edition toys, and with an in-depth look at the work of Japanese artists Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara, Hong Kong trendsetters Eric So and Michael Lau, and many other leading players in the world of designer toys, this is a book that will appeal to a wide range of readers: from those interested in the latest trends in contemporary art, to toy collectors, and to anyone with an interest in Japan's influence on contemporary pop culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I just loved it!
How much I appreciate plastic now after reading this book! My only let down is that the author mentions Sailor Moon a lot and never actually details or shows anything related to the Sailor Moon series or toys. All in all, it's the best book about toys I own and I have a few :)

3-0 out of 5 stars toys
If you collect vinyl and for the price of a used copy this book is nice to have around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Urban vinyl at its best!
This is an amazing book!Eloquently written, with great insights into toys as a whole, this book gives a comprehensive overview of the emergence of designer vinyl.Great images!

5-0 out of 5 stars now i feel much smarter This book is great
All the cool pictures of toys I can't have are nice. But it's really better than all the other toy books becuase it explains all about toys and how come they are so cool. I know it was for adult level reader but I learned a lot that my friends don't know! It wasn't hard to read and I wish it was twice the size. My only problem is There was not enough Blythe information even though she's on the cover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Urban Vinyl
Ah, what a wonderful invention plastic is!Nearly limitless possibilities, able to be shaped into almost any form, take on any color, and endure across the centuries. As functional as it is fantastic.Of course, it was only a matter of time before artists took this malleable material into their capable hands, and created something that the inventors of the plastic would have never imagined. In this case, it is toys.

"Plastic Culture: How Japanese Toys Conquered the World" supposes to tell the story of plastic, and its journey from function to fantastic, from commerce to art.Supposes to, because unfortunately the book seems to have fallen victim to a loss of focus, or possibly a conflict between writer and editor.Instead of this history of plastic, and their connection to Japanese culture, what the writer wanted to write about was an artistic movement called Urban Vinyl, originating in Hong Kong and then spreading to Japan and the US.That's his passion, and it shows.

The first half of "Plastic Culture" is rough. It begins with a very brief history of plastic's invention, and its use in toys across the years. There is some brief connection with Japan, introducing the Kaiyodo model makers who perfected the garage kit. There is a half-hearted section on using toys for marketing purposes as mascots, mainly mentioning McDonalds Happy Meal toys and the Olympics. Trying to swing the story back to Japan, Sanrio is covered with their successful line of Hello Kitty figures and other characters. These articles are all short on text, and heavy on pictures, jumping rapidly from section to section without much logic or interest. Its pretty boring, and not very well researched. Then, on page 43, author Woodrow Pheonix begins the section on Urban Vinyl. And it all changes.

The Urban Vinyl movement began in Hong Kong, with a couple of young talents started taking apart GI Joe figures and putting them back together street-style, dressed in the latest Hong Kong fashions and with an attitude that GI Joe never imagined. These two, Michael Lau and Eric So, exhibited their work at galleries, and inspired other artists to see toys as a medium of expression, rather than just playthings. The movement jumped across the water, to Japan with its ingrained toy culture, and then to the US underground comics scene, where artists like Dan Clowes ("Ghost World") and Archer Prewitt ("Sof' Boy") began teaming up with Asian designers to produce unique figures combining all of their talents and visions.Into this comes Takashi Murakami, famed for his Superflat exhibition and one of Japan's greatest modern artists, who sees the concept of creating original works of art in toys, rather than just reproducing existing works in plastic.Yoshitomo Nara, another prominent Japanese modern artist, follows suit. Its fascinating.

If this book had been called "Urban Vinyl," and started with Lau and So in Hong Kong, then been given enough depth to explore the artistic movement completely, it would have been incredible.Woodrow Pheonix has a real passion for this movement, and a deep insightinto what makes it tick and how the pieces fit together. His interviews with Murakami and Nara really made me reconsider the way I see toys, and it was great to here these two giants of modern art put forward such opposing yet complementary viewpoints on Urban Vinyl.

But it wasn't, and so "Plastic Culture" is really only half a great book. That second half is really something, and worth picking up the book for.It makes me want to learn more about Urban Vinyl and hopefully someday Pheonix will get to write the book that he should have.I will be first in line to pick it up. ...
