Book Description
Since the First Edition appeared, Air Pollution Control: A Design Approach has become the leading air pollution control text on the strengths of good writing, comprehensive coverage, an emphasis on design, and excellent real-world examples. The Third Edition continues this tradition of excellence, incorporating new and updated information throughout the text while retaining the topical organization and features that have made it an invaluable learning tool for instructors and students alike. The Third Edition successfully achieves two main objectives. First, it presents detailed information about air pollution and its control. Causes, sources, effects, and regulation of air pollution are discussed, as well as the economic analysis necessary for efficient and effective control of air pollution. Second, and perhaps more importantly, it provides formal design training for engineering students. Written for engineers from a variety of disciplines, this text offers numerous diagrams, examples, and end-of-chapter problems emphasizing key concepts and design techniques. Outstanding features include: 1) two new chapters: Biofiltration and Indoor Air Quality; 2) current cost estimation data and techniques; 3) updated air quality trends; 4) 31 sample P. E. Examination problems with worked-out solutions; and 5) new end-of-chapter problems in every chapter. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Book is a decent textbook for what it is
There aren't many air pollution books that are out in the market that are simple to read. Many things are broken down pretty simply but some of the questions in the back really pose a problem since the book doesn't really explain how to solve them. Also I think it would be better if the even answered questions were in the back as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jfinney
The text is not very readable for ease. However, it's redeaming quality is the section to practice the entire design process including econ.Ch 9 is a look into the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Air Pollution Control
Air Pollution Control by Cooper and Alley, presents a clearly written overview of air pollution and the control processes available for the engineer to choose from.

I have listened to Dr. Cooper lecture. The writing style in this book is like his teaching: well-organized, easy-to-understand, and practical. The book provides especially good instruction in the sizing and cost estimation of pollution control equipment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best but good enough
I cannot say this book is the best book ever been written on air pollution but it's a pretty good book. Especially when it comes to modeling, I love the text. It's a good book to be in your library; however, I do not recommend it as a reference book.

Book Description
This text covers the whole air pollution field, from an engineering perspective. The principal topics are control devices and their theory. The book uses many more examples than other texts to help the student see the magnitudes of important quantities and to show and practice the practical application of theoretical treatments presented. The other half is devoted to topics that form some of the background for the selection of such devices, i.e., air pollution effects, the structure of U.S. air pollution law, atmospheric models, etc. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars like a puzzle
This book is very entertaining because in order to solve the problems, you have to look for the data that you need all over the place. It's like a puzzle. It has a lot of information very poorly distributed, Very poorly. I think this book needed an editor to actually do his job and well, edit it. Other than that its a good one.

Book Description
A well-respected air pollution text, this book is suitable for avariety of engineers and scientists who wish to gain an introduction tothe field of air pollution. Known for its detailed development andapplication of equations, the text emphasizes an understanding of therelationship between sources and control of air pollution, rather thanbeing a simple "handbook" on the subject. The book presentsinformation on four broad areas of interest in the air pollution field:the effects of pollutants on health and welfare; the laws andregulations that have been passed in efforts to improve air quality;the modeling of atmospheric dispersion of pollutants; the approaches tothe control of emissions (from both stationary and mobilesources).

The third edition of this text has been modified in anumber of ways. New material has been added to bring the text up todate on the latest regulations including the Clean Air Act Amendmentsof 1990. The latest standards for ambient air quality and emission havebeen included in this revision. The authors continue to expose studentsto both the quantitative and the qualitative aspects of air qualitymanagement and air pollution control with a number of new questions andproblems, with SI units emphasized to a greater extent than in theprevious edition. The internet is also introduced as a valuable sourceof additional information. A web page is maintained by the authorswhich provides links to sources of interest to both instructors andstudents. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Can it be possible?
I have to admit, I have not read this book, but who would write a book on air pollution control and then put a cooling tower on the cover? These people must be kidding! The fact that this book is into its 3rd printing and still sports a cover of a process device that has absolutely nothing to do with air pollution, its origin, nor its control, completely undermines the credibility of its authors.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent intoductory book
I used this book for a class, we also use e Sienfeld and Padis, but for people like me that are not chemical engineers, this book is an excellent introductory book in the science of air pollution and control. It doen't go as deep as Seinfeld in chemical kinetics, and it just reviews someequipment for the control of these pollutants, but I found it great forstarters like me ... Book Description
Fundamentals of Air Pollution is an important and widely used textbook in the environmental science and engineering community.Written shortly after the passage of the seminal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, the third edition was quite timely. Surprisingly, the text has remained relevant for university professors, engineers, scientists, policy makers and students up to recent years. However, in light of the transition in the last five years from predominantly technology-based standards (maximum achievable control technologies or MACTs) to risk-based regulations and air quality standards, the text must be updated significantly.

The fourth edition will be updated to include numerous MACTs which were not foreseen during the writing of the third edition, such as secondary lead (Pb) smelting, petroleum refining, aerospace manufacturing, marine vessel loading, ship building, printing and publishing, elastomer production, offsite waste operations, and polyethylene terephthalate polymer and styrene-based thermoplastic polymers production. Overall, revisions will reflect the numerous changes in the understanding of air pollution and the development of new technologies that has occurred in the past twelve years.

* Focuses on the process of risk assessment, management and communication, the key to the study of air pollution.
* Provides the latest information on the technological breakthroughs in environmental engineering since last edition
* Updated inforamtion on computational and diagnostic and operational tools that have emerged in recent years. ... Read more

Book Description

Indoor Air Pollution has become a major topic in environmental research and health. Most people spend more than 80% of their time in buildings and are exposed to a broad range of pollutants from indoor sources such as building materials, furniture, carpets and textiles, heating and cooking, household and consumer products, etc. The volume provides a comprehensive review of the major indoor air pollutants: volatile organic compounds, biocides, indoor particles and fibres, combustion products and micro-organisms and their metabolites. Sources and sinks of air pollutants in indoor environments and their chemistry are distinctly different from ambient air pollution, even though the latter may influence indoor air quality. Adsorption and desorption processes, the pollutant source dynamics, gas phase reactions and kinetics - including the fate and final chemical destiny of chemically unstable intermediate compounds - are topics of scientific research as well as the evaluation of their sensory impact and irritation potential. Guidelines for assessing indoor pollution and a broad range of analytical methods have been recently developed and are reviewed by internationally renowned scientists. The specific characteristics of indoor air pollution in developing countries due to the widespread use of open fires for cooking, heating and lighting are analysed as well as the Chinese strategies to address the growing pollution problems by air pollution in its modern building stock.

Book Description
Air Pollution is not new.But what is astonishing is how few of us in the 21st Century understand how air quality, or lack of it, affects our health.

As early as the 14th Century, people in London experienced the effects of bad air and it was a subject worthy enough for impressionist master Claude Monet more than a century ago when he visited the city and painted Waterloo Bridge shrouded in smog.

Air pollution affects all of us and the quality of our lives.Despite the profound connection - and indeed the utter reliance - we all have to the air around us, as a society (societies around the world) we are astonishingly ignorant about the importance of air quality.

In this authoritative book, Dr. David Bates and Dr. Robert Caton present an up-to-date knowledge base for societies to address air pollution and explain that until politicians, policy makers and communities understand the issues, problems will persist. They believe that sound judgement can only be made within the context of an informed citizenry, which is one of the reasons they have assembled this collection of intelligent essays.

Underscoring our growing knowledge about the health effects of air pollution is the fact that legislation in the United States, and to some extent in Canada, has been enacted mainly to deal with problems from automobile emissions, and the perceived need to protect public health.

And while this book largely presents data that address scientific, environmental and health issues concerning air pollution, it also provides economic analysis that shows more money is saved by reducing damage from air pollution than by simply controlling pollution. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bubble of Fresh Air in a Sea of Alarmism
Joel Schwarz and Steve Hayward have put together a solid evidence-based book that penetrates so much of the interest-group politics that passes for environmental science - and journalism - these days.

If people knew how much our air quality has improved over the past 30 years, they'd be stunned; not only by the gains, but by how the media have created a perpetual bad-news narrative built on spurious air quality standards designed to keep EPA bureaucrats in jobs. (Call them: asymptotic air quality standards.)

Anyone serious about the gains the US has made in air quality should read this book. It's, well, a breath of fresh air.

Book Description
*As many as 1 billion people, mostly women and children, are regularly exposed to indoor air pollution levels exceeding WHO guidelines by up to 100 times
*Nearly three-fifths of total global exposure to air pollutants occurs in the rural areas of developing countries. Worldwide, this translates into as many as 3 million deaths a year

At every level of economic development, ambient air pollution poses a serious challenge that cannot be left to the private initiative

This book addresses issues of particular importance to developing countries where polluting activities have been growing, but local research and preventive and protective measures are still at an early stage. Recent decades have seen considerable advances in the epidemiology of air pollution, changes in the international air pollution guidelines, and the emergence of more systematic approaches to air pollution prevention and control. There is an evident gap in the literature on air pollution and health; this book will fill this gap with a coherent series of chapters commissioned from leading researchers in both the scientific and policy dimensions of air pollution and health. ...
