Product Description
Maximize efficiency and minimize pollution: the breakthrough technology of high temperature air combustion (HiTAC) holds the potential to overcome the limitations of conventional combustion and allow engineers to finally meet this long-standing imperative. Research has shown that HiTAC technology can provide simultaneous reduction of CO2 and nitric oxide emissions and reduce energy consumption for a specific process or requirement.High Temperature Air Combustion: From Energy Conservation to Pollution Reduction provides the first comprehensive exposition of the principles and practice of HiTAC. With a careful balance of theory and practice, it reviews the historical background, clearly describes HiTAC combustion phenomena, and shows how to simulate and apply the technology for significant energy savings, reduced equipment size, and lower emissions. It offers design guidelines for high performance industrial furnaces, presents field trials of practical furnaces, and explores potential applications of HiTAC in other fields, including the conversion of solid waste fuels to cleaner fuels, stationary gas turbine engines, internal combustion engines, and other advanced energy-to-power conversion systems.Developed through an intensive research project sponsored by the Japanese government, HiTAC now promises to revolutionize our paradigm for using all kinds of fossil, alternative, waste, and derived fuels for energy conversion and utilization in industry. This book is your opportunity to understand its principles, learn about the technology, and begin to use it to the benefit of your application, your company, and the environment. ... Read more

Product Description
In these pages is all the information that you-manager, engineer, or other technical professional-would need to select, size, and estimate "budget/study" level capital and annual costs for a variety of air pollution control equipment. This equipment includes wet scrubbers, carbon adsorbers, and other "add-on" devices. This book also deals with such nonstack controls as wet dust suppression systems and flue gas desulfurization systems. The costs are current (1988 or 1989 dollars) and are mainly presented in equational form for ease of computerization and updating. Clear, comprehensive equipment sizing procedures are also detailed. Finally, several detailed example problems are included to illustrate the sizing and costing procedures. This book is not just for technical personnel, however. The material is easy to grasp and use. Anyone with an air pollution control background can follow and apply the procedures and data herein. Using this book, air pollution control professionals can now develop sound, defensible (within ±30%) cost estimates with a minimum of time and effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and practical book for Air Quality Engineers
I have owned this book since publication.I am a practicing engineer who designs air quality control equipment and over 20 million dollars worth of equipment that I have designed is in use in industry. This book is one of two references that I rely upon to do my job ("Sources and Control of Air Pollution" by Heinsohn and Kabel being the other). The explanations are thorough and practical. The book is very well written and easy to read.

I and the engineers I work with call this "The Book of Warnings."The reason we do so is that it seems that every time we encounter something in our equipment design that is not behaving as expected we go into this book and learn what we did wrong -- that is, the warning was in this book and and we could have prevented the trouble if we had only paid closer attention to this text.

In summary, this is an awesome book that is both an educational tool and a very practical everyday reference for air quality control equipment design. ... Read more

Product Description
*As many as 1 billion people, mostly women and children, are regularly exposed to indoor air pollution levels exceeding WHO guidelines by up to 100 times
*Nearly three-fifths of total global exposure to air pollutants occurs in the rural areas of developing countries. Worldwide, this translates into as many as 3 million deaths a year

At every level of economic development, ambient air pollution poses a serious challenge that cannot be left to the private initiative

This book addresses issues of particular importance to developing countries where polluting activities have been growing, but local research and preventive and protective measures are still at an early stage. Recent decades have seen considerable advances in the epidemiology of air pollution, changes in the international air pollution guidelines, and the emergence of more systematic approaches to air pollution prevention and control. There is an evident gap in the literature on air pollution and health; this book will fill this gap with a coherent series of chapters commissioned from leading researchers in both the scientific and policy dimensions of air pollution and health. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good literature review, very dated absorption technology
The review of the Clean Air Act is well done. Absorption tower examples are very dated - saddles are stated to be the preferred tower packing, so the tower designed is grossly oversized with enormous pressure drop compared to what is possible with a modern packing. If you need a reference work with practical examples to pollution control towers keep looking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Air Pollution Control Technology Handbook
If you need a reference work that summarizes the Clean Air Act then this is a good source. It is also has technically sound theoretical explanations of air pollution control. However it is a poor source if you seek suggestions for any type of current air pollution control project. The examples in the text are extremely dated and hence grossly oversized. The authors recommend that saddles be used to pack towers and then design the tower to have over 40 ft of packing. As a result their towers are much to big, much too tall and have enormously high pressure drop. Unfortunately the authors ignore (or are simply unaware of) several generations of mass transfer packing development that allow for much more practical and far less costly designs than per their examples. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive text
Paced teaching from beginning to end. Excellent references to quoted material for further reading. Seminal text of our time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many typos
It may be the so-called Bible of atmospheric science, but there are too many typos for my taste. Perhaps if you're just trying to remember what the proper equation is, it'd work better.

Tables of values are frequently missing minus signs here and there, which can make working out the problems and/or examples difficult. There are other random typos that make examples simply not work out. If you just want the equations, this is ok, but for learning, it's actually easier when the typos are in the equations (and not the numbers), since in that case there's a "thought trail" of sorts.

The book claims to be the only reference, in which case you haven't got much choice, but that doesn't make it good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible
As if this needs a review...its a bible for atomspheric scientists of all genre.A must have.Especially good for any grad student preparing for the random question during an oral exam. Not that you could read the thing cover to cover, but there is something for everyone.

If you need a great reference, then this is it. If you are not sure you should buy one of the best references for atomsopheric chemistry and physics, then there is no reason to.That's just a sign that you probably don't need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about Atmospheric Science
This book has it all.If you are in the field of atmospheric sciences, it is a muct have.If you're not in the field, but are interested in learning about atmospheric science, I'd highly recommend it.It's a technical book, with plenty of math, but it is written in an engaging, easy to read format. It's packed with information on eveything from tropospheric ozoneformation to industruial plume dispersion modeling. It has everything youneed to know about atmospheric science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bubble of Fresh Air in a Sea of Alarmism
Joel Schwarz and Steve Hayward have put together a solid evidence-based book that penetrates so much of the interest-group politics that passes for environmental science - and journalism - these days.

If people knew how much our air quality has improved over the past 30 years, they'd be stunned; not only by the gains, but by how the media have created a perpetual bad-news narrative built on spurious air quality standards designed to keep EPA bureaucrats in jobs. (Call them: asymptotic air quality standards.)

Anyone serious about the gains the US has made in air quality should read this book. It's, well, a breath of fresh air.
