Editorial Review

Product Description
Air Pollution Meteorology and Dispersion provides a concise yet thorough review of the basic theories, models, experiments, and observations of pollutant dispersal in the atmosphere. It offers the theoretical and empirical bases of frequently used dispersion models while emphasizing the limitations and uncertainties inherent in these models. Organized into twelve chapters, the material is presented in order of increasing difficulty. The first half of the book treats the basic tenets of air pollution modeling; the second half deals with the more detailed theoretical and observational aspects of dispersion. Sufficient background material on atmospheric structure, dynamics, and circulation systems and their importance to atmospheric dispersion is included for students who do not yet have a strong meteorological background. Turbulence and diffusion theories, such as gradient transport, statistical, and similarity theories, as well as analytical and numerical dispersion and air quality models, are also discussed. Problems and exercises are included in each chapter, making this an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate courses in atmospheric science and mechanical engineering. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
China's historic economic expansion is driven by fossil fuels, which increase its emissions of both local air pollutants and greenhouse gases dramatically. Clearing the Air is an innovative, quantitative examination of the national damage caused by China's degraded air quality, conducted in a pathbreaking, interdisciplinary U.S.-China collaboration. Its damage estimates are allocated by sector, making it possible for the first time to judge whether, for instance, power generation, transportation, or an unexpected source such as cement production causes the greatest environmental harm. Such objective analyses can help China reset policy priorities.

Clearing the Air uses this information to show how appropriate "green" taxes might not only reduce emissions and health damages but even enhance China’s economic growth. It also shows to what extent these same policies could limit greenhouse gases, suggesting that wealthier nations have a responsibility to help China build environmental protection into its growth.

Clearing the Air is written for a diverse audience, providing a bridge from underlying research to policy implications, with easily accessible overviews of issues and summaries of the findings for nonspecialists and policymakers followed by more specialized, interlinked studies of primary interest to scholars. Taken together, these analyses offer a uniquely integrated assessment that supports the book's economic and policy recommendations. ... Read more

Product Description
Emission of pollutants and their accumulation due to poor ventilation and air exchange are serious problems currently under investigation by many researchers. Of particular concern are issues involving air quality within buildings. Toxic fumes and airborne diseases are known to produce undesirable odors, eye and nose irritations, sickness, and occasionally death. Other products such as tobacco smoke and carbon monoxide can also have serious health effects on people exposed to a poorly ventilated environment; studies indicate that indirect or passive smoking can also lead to lung cancer.

Design for prevention or remediation of indoor air pollution requires expertise in optimizing geometrical configurations; knowledge of HVAC systems, perceived or expected contaminants and source locations; and economics. Much of the design concept involves ways in which to optimize the benefits or balance the advantages and disadvantages of various configurations and equipment. The fact that a room or building will conceivably become contaminated is generally an accepted fact -- to what extent indoor air pollution will become critical is not really known until it happens.

A series of numerical models that run in MATLAB are described in the text and placed on the Web. These models include the finite difference method, finite volume method, finite element method, the boundary element method, particle-in-cell, meshless methods, and lagrangian particle transport. In addition, all example problems can be run using COMSOL, a commercial finite-element-based computer code with a great deal of flexibility and application. By accessing AutoCad ICES or DWG file structures, COMSOL permits a building floor plan to be captured and the interior walls discretized into elements.

Contents: Fluid Flow Fundamentals; Contaminant Sources; Assessment Criteria; Simple Modeling Techniques; Dynamics of Particles, Gases and Vapors; Numerical Modeling -- Conventional Techniques; Numerical Modeling -- Advanced Techniques; Turbulence Modeling; Homeland Security Issues. ... Read more

Product Description
The long-range transport of air pollutants and the reduction ofair pollution to an acceptable level is an important environmentalproblem. The mathematical models by which this problem can besuccessfully studied are normally described by partial differentialequations. The discretization in space leads to huge systems ofordinary differential equations containing up to several millionequations that are to be handled during many time steps. This showswhy the numerical treatment of these problems always causesdifficulties, even if high-speed computers are available. Severalproblems connected with the computer treatment of air pollution modelsare discussed. While there are many excellent papers devoted to thissubject, this is the first book where an attempt is made to studythese problems systematically. This book may be useful for manyspecialists in air pollution modelling. Some topics are treated rathergenerally, therefore the book may also be used as a reference sourceby many scientists and engineers working with large mathematicaltools. ... Read more

Product Description
This book contains the 100 papers presented at the Fifth International Conference on Air Pollution, which was held in Bologna, Italy, September 16-18, 1997. The papers were written by scientists working in industry, research organizations, government and academia who are involved with monitoring, simulation and management of air pollution problems.

The volume presents advances on monitoring, modeling, management and understanding of air pollution problems. Particular attention is given to developments in computational and experimental techniques, as well as to health problems. These techniques can be used as a tool for solving and understanding practical air pollution problems, from which it is possible to assess proposed emission control techniques and strategies. Mathematically and computationally based theoretical works and case studies compared to modeling results are presented and discussed. ... Read more

Product Description
As pollution from cars, trucks, and land-based stationary sources has been more tightly controlled over the last 40 years, the contribution of ships and port operations to air pollution in port cities has become more important. In the same period, foreign trade has grown dramatically; thus, pollution from shipping and port operations would be growing as a percentage of total emissions, even if the emissions were regulated to the same degree as other sectors. This book provides information regarding pollution from ships and port facilities and discusses some of the measures being implemented and considered by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access. ... Product Description
The air in earth's atmosphere is vital to living things; but people are polluting this clean, fresh air. Air pollution harms plants, animals and humans. It is even changing earth's climate. For centuries, people have produced small amounts of air pollution - but now we are producing far, far more. This book looks at how human life changed to bring about this increase; at what makes smog form in our cities and acid rain fall on our forests; and at how air pollution is connected to global warming. It also looks at what you, the reader, can do to help and start to improve YOUR environment today. Throughout, 'Fact Panels' give stark statistics to highlight the problems and 'Try This!' panels give the reader simple activities which they can do to investigate the issues. These books are also weblinked which means that the reader is directed to specially selected websites where they can find out more. ... Read more
