Product Description
During the last century international trade has becomeindispensable for many economies. This is not only the case for tradein primary raw materials and consumer products but also for secondary(recyclable) materials. With the rapid growth of the recycling sectorworldwide, trade in recyclables increased tremendously. It is strikingthat most of this trade flows from developed to developing countries. This book addresses the main causes of this typical trade pattern andinvestigates its economic and environmental effects by carrying outcase studies on waste paper imports in India, waste plastics importsin China, and used-tyre trade in Europe. The book concludes byrecommending policies that are aimed at preventing negative economicand environmental effects potentially resulting from trade inrecyclables. The book offers new ideas to researchers who are involvedin international trade, material flows, and waste management, andprovides new insights for decision-makers who are interested in WTOand the Basel Convention. ... Product Description
Industrial facilities are increasingly recognizing the need to minimize the amount of pollutants generated on-site. Significant benefits (including cost savings, reduced physical hazards, decreased regulatory burdens, and improved occupational and environmental health and safety) can be achieved by substituting cleaner technologies in the production process. Moreover, as manufacturers invest in pollution prevention, they often make changes that enable them to compete more effectively in the global marketplace. This new book is a guide for the practicing engineer who has the responsibility for process improvements to reduce or eliminate wastes in the environment. The "cleaner production technologies" described here are categorized as either commercially available or emerging. The text addresses pollution prevention benefits, operating features, applications, limitations, and regulatory features for each technology. Schematics illustrate processes and equipment, and extensive reference data is provided in tables and figures. The process change descriptions within this book allow engineers to evaluate alternatives so that cleaner technologies can be considered for existing plants, or factored into the design of new operations. Detailed information is presented to select one or more candidate technologies for further analysis and in-plant testing. The book does not recommend any one technology over another, but rather presents concise summaries of applications and operating information to support preliminary selection of cleaner technology options for testing in specific processes. This accessible book provides practical information that will help small and medium-sized businesses implement cleaner production technologies. Production engineers, process engineers, and system design engineers will find it invaluable in selecting cleaner technologies and strategies for process improvement. ... Read more

Product Description
Toxic chemicals contaminate land and groundwater on hundreds of thousands of sites in industrialized nations and in many economically developing countries. Past practices, as well as spills, leaks, and illegal disposal, have all contributed to this widely publicized problem. This book presents international policy approaches to prevent toxic contamination, to perform environmental cleanup of contaminated sites, and to redevelop these sites for productive uses. Focusing on experiences with contaminated sites in the United States and several countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Contaminated Sites and Environmental Cleanup demonstrates that policies to contend with contaminated lands have both intended and unintended consequences. The book will serve the needs of students and professionals in academia, industry, and government who are concerned with soil and groundwater contamination, remediation strategies, brownfield site redevelopment, and environmental policy making.

Key Features
* Compares and contrasts international experience with environmental cleanup and reuse of brownfield and other sites
* Integrates scientific, engineering, public health, economic, political, legal, social, and policy issues
* Offers approaches to solve problems of toxic contamination for particular reuse objectives

4-0 out of 5 stars I got what I was looking for
Basically, I bought the book looking for a good and detailed classification of polluting agents, which I got.

Good structure, hard to find these days an actual book, all you get is a collection of papers from various authors, so for you, people, looking for a classical book, or even a lecture book, this is a right choice.

I gave just **** because five you get only after the third edition! ;)

3-0 out of 5 stars Soil, Vadose Zone, and Ground-Water Contamination
I just use this book as a reference on occasion.I really don't like how it is setup or formatted. It does not contain an index which can make it a little difficult if you are trying to specifically find information.I generally go elsewhere if i need information quickly on vadose zone or contamination.I wouldn't recommend purchasing this unless you have had a chance to look at it in person and are sure that it has what you are interested in. ... Product Description
This Work Investigates The Dichotomy Between The Notion Of Polluting Cities and rural idyll. Examining the emergence of the farm pollution problem in Britain in the 1980s, the book traces the resulting change in public opinion leading to a new "moralizing" of the countryside. Drawing on research carried out amongst dairy farmers, National River Authority Pollution Inspectors, agricultural advisers and environmental campaigners, the author discusses whether it is unacceptable to pollute in a farming environment or merely an unfortunate side-effect of dairy production processes in the 1990s. The author examines issues such as effluents in the environment; farm pollution regulation in the 1970s and 1980s; pollution control; and risk and regulatory science. ... Read more

35. Oil Spills First Principles: Prevention and Best Response

list price: US$269.00
Isbn: 0080428142

Product Description
Marine oil spills are no longer considered unavoidable "accidents" resulting from adverse environmental conditions or functions of catastrophic events. More than 80% of all spills are the result of "human error". The focus of the current legal, regulatory, and convention framework affecting the transportation of oil by ship reflects a recent change in public attitude, in which there is an insistence upon protection of the world¿s marine environments, particularly coastal ecosystems. The outcome of such global attention is the creation of significant legal and political motivators for a cultural shift by the oil shipping industry, from an "evasion culture" to a "safety culture". The new safety culture connotes continuous improvement in ship operations and a willingness to adopt the evolving concepts of communication at all levels, better trained and qualified personnel on board ship, emphasis of safety from top down, and proactive institution of safety management systems. Mere compliance with international and national laws is no longer sufficient for future sustainable shipping. These changes and advancements in understanding the science and engineering of oil spills are the focus of this book on Oil Spills First Principles. They are Prevention, based upon adoption of the safety culture, and Best Response, utilizing scientific, technical and environmental data and information.

Over the past 30 years, billions of US dollars have been spent in R&D planning, response and clean up of oil spills. All of these efforts have focused on achieving Best Response. The concept of time periods of "Technology Windows-of-Opportunity" for a given response and clean up technology has developed from the leadership and wisdom of researchers and responders from many nations using modeling of the weathering of spilled oil and technology effectiveness. The Windows-of-Opportunity strategy provides a scientific basis for policy and decision-making in oil spill planning, response, and training.

A global paradigm shift is needed to more effectively utilize and expedite the application of lessons learned in both prevention and clean up. Recognition of economic, political, and legal benefits accruing from environmental protection is good for business and critical for sustainable shipping.

Product Description
Representatives of 111 nations gathered in Stockholm in May 2001 to sign a legally binding convention to eliminate or reduce emissions of pesticides, insecticides, and other industrial combustion by-products. Long-range transport by air and water carries many of these pollutants to the circumpolar north, where they threaten the health and cultural survival of Inuit and other northern Indigenous peoples. Northern Lights Against POPs tells the many-faceted scientific, policy, legal, and advocacy story that led to the Stockholm convention. Unique in its perspective, scope, and breadth, it reveals the key links among environmental and health science, international politics, advocacy, law, and global negotiations. Never before have public health concerns articulated by northern Indigenous peoples in Canada and throughout the circumpolar Arctic had such a direct impact on global policy-making. Authors show how research on POPs (persistent organic pollutants) in the Arctic from the mid-1980s influenced international negotiations and analyze the potential for the convention to be effective.Contributors include elected representatives, researchers, civil servants, Indigenous people who participated in the negotiations, and scientists who provided the compelling Arctic data that prompted the United Nations Environment Programme to sponsor negotiations. Contributors include David Anderson (Minister of the Environment, Canada); Nigel Bankes (University of Calgary); John Buccini (Consultant, former chair of the Global POPs Negotiations); Sheila Watt-Cloutier (Inuit Circumpolar Conference-Canada); Barry Commoner, Paul Woods Bartlett, Holger Eisl, Kimberly Couchot (Center for the Biology of Natural Systems, Queens College, City University of New York); Eric Dewailly (Laval University); David Downie (Director of Educational Partnerships, Columbia Earth Institute, Columbia University, New York); Terry Fenge (Inuit Circumpolar Conference-Canada); Henry Huntington (Consultant, Anchorage) and Michelle Sparck (Circumpolar Conservation Union, Washington, D.C.); Harriet Kuhnlein, Laurie Chan (Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment, McGill University), and Olivier Receveur (formerly Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment, McGill University); Lars-Otto Reiersen (Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme Secretariat,Oslo); Henrik Selin (Massachusetts Institute of Technology); David Stone, Russell Shearer (Northern Contaminants Program, Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Canada); Klaus Topfer (Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme). ... I bought this because I very much liked a new book my one of the authors. I was blown away by the information in this book.I know so much more about the dangers posed by toxic chemicals. The book has definitely altered my thinking and actions. I am also amazed by the political struggle of the Inuit to get attention paid to the unique pollution problems that they face -problems they did not cause.
