Product Description
Water, water everywhere - with this in mind, the perennial question in water works remains: can the earth's finite supply of water resources be increased to meet the constantly growing demand? Hailed on its first publication as a masterful account of the state of water science, this second edition of the bestselling The Science of Water: Concepts and Applications puts the spotlight on the critical importance of water's role in future sustainability.

Clearly written and user-friendly, this timely revision builds on the remarkable success of the first edition by updating, reorganizing, and revising the original to include the latest information and research results. The common thread woven through the fabric of this presentation is water resource utilization and its protection. It covers topics such as water sources, water hydraulics, chemistry, biology/microbiology, ecology, water quality, pollution, biomonitoring, sampling, testing, reuse, and treatment. The author examines the impact of human use, misuse, and reuse of freshwater and wastewater on the overall water supply.

Authoritative, informative, and up-to-date, the book blends real-world experience with theoretical models. This work provides the valuable insight all water/wastewater practitioners need and includes important information for policymakers and anyone else tasked with making decisions concerning water resource utilization. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The politic of pollution
Generally, this book decribes the politic of environmental in East Java. These authors analyzed development of pollution case in East Java since 1970s, and how local government, as well as local people, had responded it. Pollution, especially water polllution in Surabaya River, became a big issue in East Java since 1970s. The reason is clear. Surabaya river is the main resource for drinking water for Surabayan inhabitants. But, although the pollution was damaged the quality of this water in Surabaya river, but local government did not prohibit state's water department to sell the water. In this context, local government and private sectors tried to camouflage about the damaged condition of Surabaya river. This camoflauge was political trick of third world state. The valued of this book is in this point. And, it is very important book for policy makers, environmentalist as well as students and tourist. From this book, we could learn how to handle the problem, not only in East Java or Indonesia, but also in others countries...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cost of Development
This is the excellent book that I've ever read. Based on East Java field research, these authors explained the impact of development in Indonesia "New Order". In the high rate of growth, there was an impact, which could be burden of the future generation of Indonesia, on environmental. The desctruction of enviromental in East Java could impact on the healthy condition of child and babies in East Java generally. In addition, these authors explained also who struggle of common people to improve quality of their environmental. Unfortunately, their struggle was ignored by central government. This is the most important book for students, policy makers and common people to study the impact of industrialization in third world countries such as Indonesia. ... Read more

This is emphasized by the increasing regulatory requirements for discharges into the equatic environment, and the move towards "Integrated Pollution Control". This book provides an up-to-date treatment of all aspects of the sampling process, from legislative requirements to sampling techniques and analytical methods. Approaches to the handling, storage and communication of data are also reviewed. Case studies at the end of the book show how the methods and theory detailed in the text are applied to real situations. ... Read more

Product Description

Sol-gel processing is a soft-chemistry method to obtain functional materials at low temperatures. This route can be used to produce very sophisticated nanomaterials and to tailor the materials to very specific applications. Adsorption and detection of pollutants, water purification and soil remediation represent challenging fields of application that can be exploited by sol-gel materials. In this volume several contributions from invited speakers and participants at the NATO advanced research workshop on "Sol-gel approaches to materials for pollution control, water purification and soil remediation", which has been held in Kiev, Ukraine on October 2007, are reported. The book offers a wide and updated overview of the most advanced sol-gel methods for materials processing and at the same time presents several case studies concerning possible solutions for environmental issues. General articles on sol-gel from the invited speakers and focused research articles allow getting inside sol-gel applications on this very important field.

Product Description

Urbanization of the Earth’s population will have increased the Earth’s urban population from less than one billion in 1950 to five billion by 2030. Managing water for this burgeoning urban population is one of the critical needs for humanity. This book uses a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to examine the urban water environment. Water has multiple roles: municipal water supply, aquatic habitat, landscape aesthetics and recreation. Increasingly, urban water is reused, serving multiple purposes. Humans alter the urban hydrologic cycle and the chemical and physical integrity of urban water systems and resources. Some of those changes are beneficial, and others harmful. Understanding those changes and impacts requires expertise and perspective from a wide range of disciplines. Chapter authors represent this diversity of expertise, with expertise in surface and groundwater hydrology, civil and environmental engineering, environmental policy, urban planning, law, geomorphology, and recreation management.

Product Description
As pollution from cars, trucks, and land-based stationary sources has been more tightly controlled over the last 40 years, the contribution of ships and port operations to air pollution in port cities has become more important. In the same period, foreign trade has grown dramatically; thus, pollution from shipping and port operations would be growing as a percentage of total emissions, even if the emissions were regulated to the same degree as other sectors. This book provides information regarding pollution from ships and port facilities and discusses some of the measures being implemented and considered by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access. ...
