4-0 out of 5 stars a textbook with good introduction in polymer
This textbook is an elementary one foucsing on undergraduate study. So if you have already had background in polymer chemistry, this book might be easy for you. All in all, this is a helpful book to take you into the polymer world!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Textbook
This is a good Polymer Chemistry Textbook. It is very informative. However, it isn't the most exciting read. The book is completely black and white, making it hard to read for extended periods of time.I would recommend this textbook for the quality of it's information.

5-0 out of 5 stars some other introductory books
Just wanted to mention two other introductory polymer books:

Polymers (Oxford Chemistry Primers) by David J. Walton & J. Phillip Lorimer. This book is just a brief intro to the field. Wouldn't use it for a full semester course.

The Chemistry of Polymers by J.W. Nicholson, 2nd edition, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, ISBN 0854045589. This one IS suitable for a 1 semester course.

Both are very good.

Check out my other reviews for other chemistry books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to polymer chem...
I was not able to fit polymer chem into my schedule at University, so I bought this book after graduating. This book is extremely organized and provides a lot of examples. The first of three sections provides a great introduction with the focus on definitions and structure. This is accomplished with very little reference to reactions.
The next two sections, which are titled vinyl and nonvinyl polymers respectively, address reaction mechanisms and kinetics. This layout allowed for smooth transitions between sections and concepts were introduced and reinforced smoothly.
The other thing I liked about it, is the continuous reinforcement of nomenclature...every time a name was used a corresponding structure was on that same page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Premier Polymer Chemistry Text
This textbook does an excellent job of going over the basics of polmer chemistry. There are insightful questions at the end of chapters that make students think and the book goes over the material in such a way that a background in organic chemistry is not necessary. If you need to learn about polymer chemistry on your own, this book is an excellent purchase. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and interesting book on screw exrusion
This is a very unique and interesting book on screw exrusion of polymers, and contains many suggestive observations not only on melting but also on solid conveying, metering etc. of extruders.
Chung model, different from other models, has been developed based on experimental results by a unique simulative apparatus called "screw simulator" and theoretical studies of them. There were discussions about the adequacy of applying the knowledge from the screw simulator to real single screw extruders. Chung persevered in his research, and published his achievements in book form.

Extensively revised and updated to keep abreast of recent advances, Polymers: Chemistry and Physics of Modern Materials, Third Edition continues to provide a broad-based, high-information text at an introductory, reader-friendly level that illustrates the multidisciplinary nature of polymer science. Adding or amending roughly 50% of the material, this new edition strengthens its aim to contribute a comprehensive treatment by offering a wide and balanced selection of topics across all aspects of the chemistry and physics of polymer science, from synthesis and physical properties to applications.

Although the basics of polymer science remain unchanged, significant discoveries in the area of control over molecular weight, macromolecular structure and architecture, and the consequent ability to prepare materials with specific properties receive extensive mention in the third edition. Expanded chapters include controlled radical polymerizations, metallocene chemistry, and the preparation of block and graft copolymers, as well as multiarmed and dendritic structures. Reflecting the growth of polymer applications in industry, the book presents detailed examples to illustrate polymer use in electronic, biological, and medical settings. The authors introduce new understandings of rheological behavior and replace old and outmoded methods of polymer characterization with new and up-to-date techniques. Also new to this edition are a series of problems at the end of each chapter that will test whether the reader has understood the various points and in some cases expand on that knowledge. 4-0 out of 5 stars Polymers... an interesting read
I'm really enjoying this book. It has a fair bit of practical advice on how to test polymers (more please!!!) and gives lots of facts about their structure, function and properties.

TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis) and Raman spectra don't get much of a mention... but it's certainly seems to cover a lot of areas.

It was surprisingly hard to find a polymers book that covered most of the basic facts... despite asking for suggestions from a number of polymer chemists and searching online. This suggests that there are very few good books which meet this need.

From the undergrad perspective (my undergrad project is in polymers) this is a quite readable and very useful text. I'm just sorry that they don't teach us more about polymers at Uni:they've dropped polymers as an elective entirely (lecturer retired and not replaced).

Polymers are a very interesting area of chemistry... and this book certainly helps explain why.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic book is updated.
Polymers: Chemistry and Physics of Modern Materials is a classic text that emphasizes structure/property relationships in polymers. The majority of the Third Edition is unchanged from the Second, except in two important ways:for the first time, problem sets are found after each chapter, which is a welcome addition over the earlier editions. Secondly, recent developments in polymer chemistry have been added:controlled architecture polymers, such as dendrimers and stars, along with metallocene chemistry, RAFT, ATRP, and other catalyst mediated chemistries. To make room for these developments, the content on liquid crystalline polyesters is combined with the chapter on crystallinity. Those seeking an in-depth coverage of viscoelasticity and ultimate mechanical properties, especially the latter, will need to supplement the coverage of these subjects using other texts and reference works.Publication under the CRC/Taylor and Francis Group makes this book more readily available in the U.S. than were previous editions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introductory text to industrial polymers
Good introduction.Covers chemistry of polymerization (step growth, free radical, ionic).Amorphous, semi-crystalline and elastomeric polymers.Covers mechanical properties in terms of viscoelastic behaviour. Thisbook could be very useful to non-chemists requiring a brief readableintroduction to, or overview of, polymer chemistry.Does not assume highlevel of prior knowledge in chemistry or calculus.Does also not providemuch specific physical or mechanical data of commercial polymers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and lots of fun!
I've been working (playing) with polymer clay for several years now, and Christi's books are the best one's I've found for jump-starting your own creativity rather than just reproducing projects. The difference is in her writing style. It's more like chatting with a good friend about a mutually beloved subject than being in a class and trying to follow instructions.I recommend this book to all those who love creating with their hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction book
I've worked with polymer clay for a while but this wonderful book helped me take my work to a new level. Not only is her teaching style very entertaining - I love her sense of humor but she doesn't leave out any important details like so many other instruction books do, many just seem to assume that you somehow have a crystal ball to figure out the steps they leave out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polymer Clay and Mixed Media
This book was purchased as a gift for my sister. She is a big fan of Christi Friesen's work and of her books. She will use the information in her many wonderful creations.

Product Description
Conducting and semiconducting (conjugated) polymers have a unique set of properties, combining the electronic properties of metals and semiconductors with the processing advantages and mechanical properties of polymers. Now, thirty-five years after their discovery, metallic conducting polymers have been demonstrated in the laboratory to have electrical conductivities approaching that of copper, and mechanical strengths exceeding that of steel, a remarkable achievement.

A wide variety of electrical and optical devices have been demonstrated using semiconducting polymers. Light-emitting devices have been made which are as bright as fluorescent lamps at applied voltages of only a few volts; photovoltaic solar energy conversion using conjugated polymer composites is in industrial production; conjugated polymer transistors, circuits and chips have been demonstrated. Indeed, semiconducting and metallic polymers can be thought of as electronic 'inks'. The advances in printing technology (ink-jet printing, off-set printing, etc) combined with the science and technology of conducting polymers will revolutionize the way in which electronic devices are manufactured. In addition, semiconducting and metallic polymers can be used in applications which require special mechanical properties such as flexibility.

The field of semiconducting and conducting polymers has become one of the most attractive areas of interdisciplinary materials science and technology. Ranging from physics, chemistry, electrical and electronic engineering to the optical sciences, this field covers a wide range of competences and interdisciplinary knowledge. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some really pretty beads
I like this book because the designs really are beautiful, and they employ techniques I've never thought of before. The instructions will tell you exactly how to reproduce what's on the page -- they are very precise, so if you like that, you're in luck.Personally, I'd prefer more flexibility in the directions, but that's just me.The layout of the book is also very lovely, with full page pictures of each project.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very basic projects, somewhat amatuerish

5-0 out of 5 stars The best
I have over 20 polymer clay books and this is by far the best. Her designs are stunning and really make me want to push my envelope. It's become my go-to book for inspiration, techniques, and resources. One tiny problem: since the book was published so long ago, many of the companies listed for the beautiful rubber stamps she uses are either out of business or simply cannot be found.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful projects and interesting techniques
I realize that in the world of polymer clay, 2002, the publication date for this book, is an eon ago, but I encourage you to find a copy if it's not already in your library. Although this book is called Creative Stamping in Polymer Clay, I learned so much more than just stamping. There are interesting techniques for getting color onto the clay, techniques for making hand formed beads, and my favorite, making bangle bracelets without a blank. As always, Barbara McGuire has been generous with techniques and beautiful, professional projects. And the idea gallery at the back of the book provides insight into the techniques used to acheive the effects. I'm happy to have this book in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST BUY BOOK
I was very frustrated when I was looking to but miniature dolls because they are so expensive.I'm a do it yourself kind of person and this book really helped me through the entire process to make my own dolls. The book starts with a description of all kinds of polymer clay and the author makes her recommendations of clays suitable for miniatures. The book has patterns to make women, men, girls, boys and babies. There are different variations for the different periods (for example the position of the breast to fit better the different styles of dresses, the shoes, etc.)It alsohas variations to make the dolls look older. The diferents periods represented in this book are: Tudor, Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian. It comes complete with patterns, fabric guidance and full instructions on how to dress the dolls and how to make the wigs.A lot of photos of beautiful dolls in a doll house setting.Do not get discoreage if at the beginning you don't get good results, the author herself advises topractice until your skills improve. It really doesn't take much. Buy this book, you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Fantastic!
Very clear directions and instructions with lots of pictures. This should be the first book that anyone buys, if they're wanting to make dollhouse dolls... simple enough for a beginner. Historical details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent even for beginners
I do a lot of different handwork, including very occasional polymer clay, but I bought this book because my then 5 yo daughter loved it.Everytime we went to the store that carried it, I browsed patterns and fabric, she lusted over this book. Finally, I just had to give in to her before someone else bought "her" book. :-)

We haven't been disappointed. The illustrations are very clear, and very much to scale.I love having clothing patterns for the dolls available- they're worthwhile even if you never make one of the dolls. The clear directions make it almost easy to make a face that actually looks like a face. The supplies lists are very straightforward and doesn't include anything you can't easily pick up at your local craft supply stores.

I highly recommend this book, even for children.A 6 yo is a little young to be able to carry out the project on her own, but working together with an adult is very possible. ... Read more

I had seen the book, lent to me by a friend, and when I heard that my grandson was interested in clay figures I thought this would be an ideal book as there were lots of weird characters that would appeal to someone of his age. Don't get me wrong, this is a book for adults mainly, not just for kids, but I thought he would be inspired by the creatures within.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Polymer Clay Fantasy Figure Book
A cute book for anyone who likes to dabble in the fantasy world of polyamer clay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great step by step explanation
The characters in this book are somewhat goofy, however, the author provides excellent basics on armature building for creatures like horses and dragons. If you are looking for a lighter side to the fantasy world and would like to sculpt some fun creatures, this book is perfect. I think that kids will really love how achievable the sculptures in this book are for them. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Review of An Introduction to the Mechanical Properties of Solid Polymers
It wasn't great, but it was a required book for the class I took, so I suppose it was everything I needed. That's about all I can say.I actually barely read anything in the class.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reader
This book is a good introduction to understanding the mechanical properties of solid polymers from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint. It is suitable for university students with some knowledge ofthe physical properties of polymers but advanced enough to be used in agraduate course. This is book is a much more manageable version of aprevious book by I.M. Ward, "Mechanical Properties of SolidPolymers".It has been useful as basic reference and provides furtherreferences should more details be desired.Highly recommended addition toany persons collection of polymer science and engineering books. The onlydrawback is the cost.It is a bit disappointing to see the price almostdouble in less than 3 years. ... Product Description
Thoroughly revised edition of the classic text on polymer processing

The Second Edition brings the classic text on polymer processing thoroughly up to date with the latest fundamental developments in polymer processing, while retaining the critically acclaimed approach of the First Edition. Readers are provided with the complete panorama of polymer processing, starting with fundamental concepts through the latest current industry practices and future directions. All the chapters have been revised and updated, and four new chapters have been added to introduce the latest developments.

Readers familiar with the First Edition will discover a host of new material, including:
* Blend and alloy microstructuring
* Twin screw-based melting and chaotic mixing mechanisms
* Reactive processing
* Devolatilization--theory, mechanisms, and industrial practice
* Compounding--theory and industrial practice
* The increasingly important role of computational fluid mechanics
* A systematic approach to machine configuration design

The Second Edition expands on the unique approach that distinguishes it from comparative texts. Rather than focus on specific processing methods, the authors assert that polymers have a similar experience in any processing machine and that these experiences can be described by a set of elementary processing steps that prepare the polymer for any of the shaping methods. On the other hand, the authors do emphasize the unique features of particular polymer processing methods and machines, including the particular elementary step and shaping mechanisms and geometrical solutions.

Replete with problem sets and a solutions manual for instructors, this textbook is recommended for undergraduate and graduate students in chemical engineering and polymer and materials engineering and science. It will also prove invaluable for industry professionals as a fundamental polymer processing analysis and synthesis reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Play with clay
I am new at using clay for my miniatures. The book looks excellent. Can't wait to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miniature Flowers
I love the book.It is filled with pictures and diagrams that make it easy to understand.Am hoping I can make as beautiful flowers with my big fingers as they can.

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so
This is the only book on this subject that I know of, so it's better than nothing. But it's frustrating throughout because the photos depict the author's hands better than the items she is holding. The verbal instructions are fairly good, but in this topic better pictures are a must.Maybe there will be a second edition with this problem corrected.Meanwhile, enjoy her pretty hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for scaredy cats.
This was the first book I ever bought on polymer clay. I barely knew what polymer clay was - I looked in the book, thought "I can do that", bought some polymer clay and by that evening was making fabulous roses. This was the perfect introductory book - the books I have subsequently purchased and used would have scared me off. This is the basics, how to condition the clay, roll it into balls, make the shapes, assemble them, bake, and maybe paint a little. No color palettes, skinner blends, no fancy equipment - just clay, your hands, some wax paper, cornstarch, scissors, toothpicks and an oven. The instructions are incredibly detailed, the pictures perfect - Quast doesn't leave you to try to figure out a single thing. No matter how "uncrafty" or unartistic you are, the projects in this book will make you think you were born for the art of polymer clay. The book covers roses, dogwood blossoms, daisies, cherry blossoms, pansies, daffodils and irises, and ends by showing you some great jewelry and decorative household items you can make.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have polymer book, flowers are beautiful & easy to make
This is a must-have book for anyone wanting to learn to make beautiful miniature flowers. It is great book for all levels, even those who have never worked with polymer clay.

At first glance I though it would be hardand very time consuming. I was wrong. I was amazed at how easy it reallywas. In less than two hours, I had a very impressive looking rosebud.

The author first covers materials and how to work with polymer clay.Included templates help you judge size & shape. Each part of everyflower is then explained step by step. Numerous color photos help to guideyou.

Flowers covered include roses, dogwood, daisies, cherry blossoms, pansies, daffodils, and irises. There are a few projects in the backshowing you how to frame the flowers and make jewelry or ornaments out ofthem. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An old Textbook for Polymer Chemistry
I have been acquainted with this book since 15 years ago.I have taught this book for 8 years in undergraduate courses . It is the only book in polymer chemistry which has nearly all the topics relating to polymer chemistry both for beginners and also for advanced level readers .Even though it is old it has many subjects all together that can not be found in another book .I think such topics as engineering subjects and kinetics and also molecular weight equations should be explained more to be more understandable to all andthis is the main disadvantages of the book .

5-0 out of 5 stars It's good, but kind of old
Excellent for the Science Olympiad event Polymer Detective ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Have Read Dozens, This is THE BEST!
This is, by far, the best book on Polymer Clay I have read. I have read dozens and been disappointed many times. This book is so good about showing you exactly how to do beautiful, unexpected things with polymer clay. Thanks for such a great guide!
I recommend this to beginners and experienced alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars DOTTY HAS DONE IT AGAIN!
This book is written by a lady who is very well known in the polymer clay community. She is extremely talented in many aspects of the clay world. This book is extremely wonderful to follow. It contains so many great ideas and inspirations for the seasoned clayer as well as the beginner. You definately will want to add this book to your clay library.I just love it.So glad I got it, but wish I would have purchased it a long time ago.Would definately been a big help when I was a newbie to claying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dotty McMillan's Artful Ways with Polymer Clay
This book, which I was waiting for, certainly is living up to its redommedation among clayers. My interest in clay was flagging and this wonderfully illustrated manual revived me.
Newbies to clay and the experienced will treasure it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wide-ranged polymer clay instructional book.
This book covers many techniques including molds, stamping, image transfers, silk screening, skinner blends, mokume gane, various canes, antiquing, crackling, gilding, faux materials, punch cutters, inclusions, inks and paints and suface techniques. I especially liked the advice about how to make your own stamps and cutters. The projects were varied and interesting (very adaptable) including knobs, a sun catcher, egg, boxes, purse, photo book, clock and a mask. There were eight jewelry projects and one very interesting project where a mini-kaleidoscope was covered and made into a pendant. This book would satisfy beginners and experts alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!! Beautiful Projects
I bought this book yesterday at a local craft store after just glancing at it for a few quick moments. I am so happy that I bought it. It has lots of ideas and projects that I haven't seen before and some that I have seen but done in a different way. Everything is kept fairly simple so even novice clayers can enjoy and use the book. As to the review that states you can't find the items that are needed in the book, there is only one project that you would need to do some work to find the items needed and that is for a kaleidoscope pendant, which while interesting is not something that I will be making anytime soon. As for the cyanoacrylate glue, if you look at most super glues you will see that is what they are made from. ... Read more
