5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the polymer technologist
This book is truly fantastic for people working on various aspects of polymers. Numbers of statements made by Flory in this book are still challenging. Remarkably good for those who want go for advance research in the filed of polymers/plastics. Not good for undergraduate students but should be used as a reference book in graduate degree. Person working on polymers knows nothing unless he/she read this book. Equations are tough and do not show from where they are originated, but fits well in real experiments with hardly exception at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!!
A comprehensive guide to Polymers by the Nobel winning Flory himself!!! The book came out over half a century back, and hence understandably contains a lot of material that has been revised and is now understood differently. Still the book continues to be an essential read for anyone interested in polymer science, and knowledge of how Flory developed and demonstrated several key ideas used in everyday polymer science. Not recommended as a textbook for beginners, but as reference book for anyone planning to delve deeper into the subject!

2-0 out of 5 stars It Can Be Easily Shown?Duh!
I mean no disrespect for the FATHER OF POLYMER CHEMISTRY, but its really hard to follow this book especially the equations......they just come out of nowhere...

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible from the father of polymer chemistry
This book wears its age well. Experimentalists are still trying to disprove many of his gedanken experiments-virtually all fail. A great book to have in your library. If you are a Professor and want to give your students a challenge-have them solve an equation that Flory indicates "it can be easily shown..." ... Read more

Product Description
The aim of the Polymer Reference Book is to familiarise the reader with all aspects of the techniques used in the examination of polymers, including chemical, physico-chemical and purely physical methods of examination. This book describes the types of techniques now available to the polymer chemist and technician, and discusses their capabilities, limitations and applications. All types of modern instrumentation are covered including those used in general quality control, research analysis, process monitoring and for determining the mechanical, electrical, thermal and optical characteristics. Aspects such as automated analysis and computerised control of instruments are also included. The book covers not only instrumentation for the determination of metals, non metals, functional groups, polymer structural analysis and end-groups in the main types of polymers now in use commercially, but also the analysis of minor non-polymeric components of the polymer formulation, whether they be deliberately added, such as processing additives, or whether they occur adventitiously, such as residual volatiles and monomers and water. Fingerprinting techniques for the rapid identification of polymers and methods for the examination of polymer surfaces and polymer defects are also discussed. The book gives an up-to-date and thorough exposition of the present state-of-the-art of the theory and availability of instrumentation needed to effect chemical and physical analysis of polymers. Over 1,800 references are included. The book should be of great interest to all those who are engaged in the examination of polymers in industry, university research establishments and general education. The book is intended for all staff who are concerned with instrumentation in the polymer laboratory, including laboratory designers, work planners, chemists, engineers, chemical engineers and those concerned with the implementation of specifications and process control. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Innovative Information
This book is a keeper!Sandra McCall has packed this book with wonderful projects. She has a keen eye for color and a style that is very inspiring.I found new techniques which I've never seen any place else, before, or even since reading this book. She tells of an easy way to quickly add sheen to beads without having to dip them into anything or even buffing.Quite a nifty time saver!

This was the first polymer clay book I bought, I had just gotten my info off the web sites, I'm so glad I bought it.I still pick it up often and get inspired to make more of the projects or try them in a new way.

The techniques and designs in the book are much more valuable than the cover price. My thanks to Sandra!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great combination!
This is an outstanding how-to of meshing stamping and polymer clay. I dabble in polymer clay bead making, but most if not all of the techniques in this book will apply or are adaptable to making beads. I find McCall's instructions to be thorough, photos explanatory and the projects to be creative and innovative. Bravo!

Product Description
Polymer chemistry and technology form one of the major areas of molecular and materials science. This field impinges on nearly every aspect of modern life, from electronics technology, to medicine, to the wide range of fibers, films, elastomers, and structural materials on which everyone depends. Although most of these polymers are organic materials, attention is being focused increasingly toward polymers that contain inorganic elements as well as organic components. The goal of Inorganic Polymers is to provide a broad overview of inorganic polymers in a way that will be useful to both the uninitiated and those already working in this field. There are numerous reasons for being interested in inorganic polymers. One is the simple need to know how structure affects the properties of a polymer, particularly outside the well-plowed area of organic materials. Another is the bridge that inorganic polymers provide between polymer science and ceramics. More and more chemistry is being used in the preparation of ceramics of carefully controlled structure, and inorganic polymers are increasingly important precursor materials in such approaches. This new edition begins with a brief introductory chapter. That is followed with a discussion of the characteristics and characterization of polymers, with examples taken from the field. Other chapters in the book detail the synthesis, reaction chemistry, molecular structure, and uses of polyphosphazenes, polysiloxanes, and polysilanes. The coverage in the second edition has been updated and expanded significantly to cover advances and interesting trends since the first edition appeared. Three new chapters have been added, focusing on ferrocene-based polymers, other phosphorous-containing polymers, and boron-containing polymers; inorganic-organic hybrid composites; and preceramic inorganic polymers. ... There are a number of different approaches to the popularcraft of working with polymer clay, which is baked at low temperatures. Sue Heaserdemonstrates the following possibilities for this versatile material:make it into colored canes that resemble Italian millefiori glass;model it into shapes, just as you would with regular clay orporcelain; or press it into molds and paint it. Sophisticated polymerclay aficionados may not be drawn to Heaser's bright animal and flowershapes, but this is a particularly good primer for those interested inthe material's modeling qualities. The jewelry, buttons, and hairaccessories are well described and make excellent projects forbeginners. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for firstime hobby in Polymer clay
This was one of my first polymer clay books. I found it useful but not very inspirational. It is more for someone wanting to practice the art of Polymer clay as a hobby and not as an artform.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polymer clay primer
Few bead project books have an index but this one does.Let's say that you are going to the opening of an Egyptian mummy exhibit at the museum and want to make and wear jewelry that is smashingly appropriate for the occasion.I would start by looking in this book because it has an index, bypassing the riffle through my other project books.

Sue shows how to make all sorts of jewelry from polymer clay by using many effective techniques. She demonstrates mould-making, metallic effects, mosaics and appliqué to make bunnies, buttons, flowers and fruit.Mould-making is used to "make-your-own fossils."If you've never worked with polymer clay, this is an excellent starter book to tempt you to try it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and useful!
I had to finally buy this book because I kept checking it out of the library! I think the pictures are great and the instructions are easy to follow. The things you make are perfect gifts for people who wear jewelry. Very highly recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
This is such a wonderful book.
My sister gave it to me for my Birthday and I just love it.
The directions for the projects are very clear and the projects themselves are beautiful.
I highly recommend this book.
I've already made 4 of the projects and don't see an end to the variations available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely, detailed book, but poorly produced
Making Polymer Clay Jewelry is a wonderful book for those who work with the medium or aspire to. The book is well-written and a lot of fun; it would be enjoyable for anyone who is not already expert at working withpolymer clay.

The content is quite good. The introduction coverstools, materials, and basic techniques; the remainder of the book isprojects. The twenty projects show polymer clay's versatility and utilityvery well, and the instructions are clear and detailed. The photographsare plentiful and attractive, and the frequent illustrations contribute agreat deal to the book's clarity.

I do wish that the author had includedthe amount of clay that each project would require. Many of the piecesrequire mixing clays to produce specific colors, and without any idea ofhow much clay will be used, it's hard to make enough, but not too much, ofa color you may not need again.

The most serious problem with the book isthe quality of the binding. The copy I have is so poorly bound that thespine is loosening noticeably, and I've had it only two days.I wouldsuggest that anyone who purchases this book have it immediately cut andspiral bound; this will also enable the user to keep the book open to aspecific page while working.

All in all, a very good book, but thepublishers should have paid closer attention to the quality of itsproduction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with interesting project ideas
An excellent all round book on the subject of polymer clay mosaics. Good clearly illustrated introductory chapters and a wide variety of projects. Apart from the sample project, all the other projects in the book only have a finished picture, the step by step instructions just being in writing. This may put off some 'visual' readers, who like to see step by step photos for the making of a project. The 'creative quotes' scattered through the book are a nice touch.

4-0 out of 5 stars great clay book
Love clay, love mosaics-this is a book that combines both and has beautiful things to make and enjoy. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Krista's Mosaic Magic
Krista's work is well known and much admired, not the least by yours truly. So it was with ill-concealed impatience I awaited her Mosaic book once I heard it was in the offing, expecting her usual top-notch standards and high calibre expertise.I wasn't disappointed. She exceeded my lofty expectations and then some. This book's a proper touch of class: mouth watering eye candy with the lid off, clear and concise instructions, and enough variety of projects to keep me out of the malls and off the Shopping Channel for quite some time to come.Smashing stuff, beautifully executed; I'd recommend this superb volume of work to anyone. ... Product Description

Polymer latex particles continue to become increasingly important in numerous commercial applications. Advanced synthesis techniques are the key to developing new functionality for nanoparticles. These methods make it possible to tailor the size, chemical composition, or properties of these particles, as well as the molecular weight of the polymer chain as a whole, based on given requirements.

Advanced Polymer Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Surface Modifications summarizes important developments in the advanced synthesis and surface modification techniques used to generate and mold polymer particles. This book explores the evolution and enhancement of processes such as emulsion, mini-emulsion, micro-emulsion, dispersion, suspension, inverse emulsion (in organic phase), and polymerization. Understanding these developments will enable the reader to optimize particle system design, giving rise to a greater application spectrum.

This book:

  • Focuses on synthesis and characterization of particles with core-shell morphologies
  • Details generation of nonspherical polymer particles using different synthetic routes
  • Explores generation of specific architectures, such as block, star, graft, and gradient copolymer particles

The authors describe pH-responsive nanoparticles and smart, thermally responsive particles. They also cover surface tailoring of various organic and inorganic nanoparticles by polymers, as well as theoretical studies on the kinetics of controlled radical polymerization techniques. Condensing and evaluating current knowledge of the development of polymer nanoparticles, this reference will prove a valuable addition to the area of polymer latex technology.

Not only are the items dumb and boring, but she expects you to run out and buy all the extra products just to make one. Nice of her huh?

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite of all of Lisa's books.
I really love the funky and sophisticated projects offerred in this book.Lisa's classy fashion style is really what makes this book special.I recommend all of her books to my students but this one is just filled front to back with really cool and stylish projects.Another nice touch was the gallery filled with several variations on most projects. It really is amazing how just a color scheme change can make over a project.

Kudos Lisa!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
Lisa has knocked another one out of the ball park. I can't believe how great these projects are while being so easy. I expected them to be simplistic, but I am pleased with the level of sophistication in the projects even though they're easy to make. I've already made several from the book and Lisa's trademark style of simple, clear instructions, along with lots of great pictures is making it hard for me to make time to do anything else since buying it. Lisa's first book got me started and all of the tips she includes has made it easy for me to become a seasoned clayer. I loved her second book as much as the first and was hopeful her latest offering would do the same. It exceeded my expectations. I can't wait for the next one and her DVD. Lisa, you have a fan for life!

I have just about every book published on polymer clay, but I have to say this one is the most unique. Most books cover the same things, using different projects to demonstrate techniques.Ms. Gikow presents many techniques and projects never covered before. Most, if not all, are 3D objects.Shetackles subjects such as hinges and clasps and points out using a mold to form your object doesn't necessarily mean your object has to look like the mold. She encourages experimentation and creativity.I can assure you, this book will show plenty of wear and tear in the not too distant future.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most creative PC books I've seen!
As a polymer clay artist for three years now, I eagerly await every new book on the subject. Jacqueline Gikow's book was worth the wait. It is beautifully organized and sumptuously illustrated with lovely pictures and helpful drawings (the best I've ever seen in a craft book). The projects she suggests are wonderful, but in fact the book is far more helpful as inspiration than simply as a "how-to" book. I highly recommend this book for intermediate to advanced PC crafters and artists. Congrats, Jacqueline!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I'd thought this was going to be a book mostly about vessels, but this book is so much more! The author starts with some basic information about working with the polymer clays, and then digs right in to some of the most advanced ideas about what this clay can do. Top notch work by some of the best polymer artists. Vessels, yes, and bowls and boxes and vases and bottles. But also miniature books, ocarinas, flutes, clocks, a foot stool, lamps... incredible work and wonderful pictures. The instructions are clear and include measurements when necessary. The projects and pictures will give you tons of ideas for making your own functional and beautiful pieces. I'd recommend this one to any polymer clay fan - what a font of inspiration to keep in your clay room. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
With increasing use of polymers in sophisticated industrial applications, it is essential that mechanical engineers have a solid understanding of these compounds. This text provides a thorough introduction to polymers from a mechanical engineering perspective, treating stresses and deformations in structural components made of polymers. The authors discuss the time-dependent response of polymers and its implications for mechanical response; mechanical response for both time-dependent and frequency-dependent material properties; and the application of the stress-strain-time relation to determine stresses and deformations in structures. With numerous examples and extensive illustrations, this book will help advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as practicing mechanical engineers, to make effective use of polymeric materials. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clear introduction to the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic materials
This is perhaps the best text available for the linear theory of viscoelastic material behavior. The presentation is straightforward and quite thorough.Primary focus is on the modeling of time or frequency dependent responses to arbitrary load and/or displacement histories.Very useful for improving the fidelity of computer simulations of dynamic systems that incorporate elastomeric isolators (e.g. fea or multi-body system dynamics). ...
