Product Description

In the 1970s, Lloyd Kahn found An Illustrated Catalogue of One William Cooper, Ltd., in an obscure London bookstore. The Cooper company manufactured portable greenhouses and plant frames, as well as chicken coops, duck houses, rabbit hutches, rustic furniture, and a variety of full-size buildings, all pre-cut at their London plant and shipped to customers at home and in the colonies. This fascinating book is a catalog of the company's plans, lovingly reproduced, for everything from pre-fab greenhouses, chapels, and barns to bentwood furniture. Equally useful to architects, builders, designers, gardeners, homesteaders, farmers, and anyone interested in old-world craftsmanship, the designs in this book remain both intriguing and inspiring. The cover reproduces the original's distinctive black and gold lettering on a red background.

5-0 out of 5 stars my recommendation
Poultry breeders who wish to know more of the history of their favorite breeds will find much to appreciate in Popular Poultry Breeds.
The forty breed profiles offered are centered in the UK, but with considerable focus on the US, and Germany and the Netherlands. Britain's importance in the history of chicken breeds and breeding is great.
Compared with its companion volume Rare Poultry Breeds, the new book has less mystery and more history. Older breeds naturally get more coverage.
In Britain breeds are called popular when they are supported by their own breed club (I think this is so). So Americans looking in this book may be surprised to see articles on Marans, Barnevelders and Welsummers, very new and rare breeds here.
Another surprise are the articles on the Asian hardfeather breeds Malay, Asil, and the Shamo and its relatives, such as the bantam Ko Shamo.
Bantam breeds Belgians, Dutch, Japanese, Rosecombs and Sebrights are well-represented. Popular Poultry Breeds delves into the differences between US and UK types for some breeds, like Leghorns and Old English Game, and gives a history of each type. Many profiles end with insider details of breeding the type and colors for showing.
Be assured that American breeds Plymouth Rocks, Wyandottes and Rhode Island Reds are given are given as much or more coverage than the other breeds here.
Names of important breeders are given when they've been responsible for the creation of a breed and its color varieties. Detail is given of importations between the UK and US, and birds passing to the UK from Europe.
The section on the Araucana, and related British Araucana and Ameraucana is fascinating, with facts you may not find anywhere else. An illustration of the ancestral Rapanui breed would have been nice.
Clear photos by John Tarren include those of rare color varieties, and a bonus are the excellent chicken breed paintings from old magazines.
Popular Poultry Breeds will also be useful to anyone simply interested in British history.
A masterful job.

This book was very informative. The information on egg storage and incubation was invaluable.I also appreciated the section on caponization which was something I have been wanting to learn about. This book is veryeasy to understand, and the information that it contains has helped both meand my husband get our chicken project off to a great start.I liked thisbook so much in fact, that I gave my first copy to my Father-in-Law for hisbirthday! (He runs our other farm in WV, and is my partner on the Project)We refer to this book over the phone all the time. Even though he is a"Seasoned Farmer", he finds himself relying on the informationjust as much as I do.Great for beginners and pros!

3-0 out of 5 stars Raising Poultry the Modern Way
It seems to be an imformative book, but it doesn't define the different terms so that a beginner can understand what he's talking about. What is the chicken's vent or shank in plain language? Why does he assume I wouldknow what culling is?What is a waddle?Just a few of the terms notdefined and frequently not explained well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How To Raise Poultry
This is an excellent overview for those interested in getting started with raising other fowl (other than chickens). You learn a lot from this book.
And we gain from the inserts that provide interesting information regarding (as an example) the possible impact on copperhead snakes, the Ark of Taste project of the Slow Food organization, and odor free duck houses. How interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christine did it again!
I didn't think Christine could top her first book but she's managed to do it.Another awesome read, enlightening and accompanied by the most beautiful illustrations. You go girl!

5-0 out of 5 stars This empowering book is jam-packed with information and surprises
I love this book so much I keep it beside my bed and often send myself off to dreamland with pictures of beautiful, colorful poultry.

When I was growing up, we had chickens, ducks, turkeys and guineas. Gathering the eggs was my job! I've missed having that connection to some of nature's most interesting, useful creatures. With an eye toward the future when I can again have feathered friends, I purchased this book to refresh my memory about poultry care. What I got was so much more than a refresher!

This book is jam-packed with all kinds of fascinating facts, poems, historical information and the most lovely pictures. Each page contains at least one surprise!

And what a timely, empowering guide this is! As we learn more about the unsustainable and unacceptable practices of giant, factory, poultry operations, instead of feeling helpless to enact meaningful change, we learn how easy it is to keep poultry right in our backyards!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide To Backyard Sustainable Poultry
Christine Heinrichs has been raising heritage fowl for years, and she's applied her journalistic skill to share her hobby with others in an effort to help protect the diverse breeds of birds in an age of mass production. I appreciated Heinrichs' sustainable advice throughout the book, with tips on building comfortable water and fertilizer conserving coops as well as details of each breed's natural habitat and needs. I especially like the matter-of-fact way she addresses the fact that some people will be eating the birds they raise. I know that's a fact of life, but I think it would be sad to eat a creature you'd raised. Perhaps eggs are different, since you don't make friends with them... I sent a note to the author and asked what her personal preferences are on the issue:

"Personally, I do not eat anyone I have known by name. I haven't ever eaten anyone I've known in person. Eggs are another story, although it's certainly possible to get sentimental about them, too. I mean, the chicken misses them. I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't eat a lot of any kind of meat."

You'll enjoy this book for its excellent advice on the various personalities, spectacular beauty and needs of various off-beat fowl, and you'll especially appreciate this hands-on, definitive guide if you're considering hosting a rare breed of fowl in your own backyard. ... Read more

Product Description
The Health of Poultry, by Mark Pattison, is a unique book describing the overall concepts of poultry health with the emphasis on creating the right conditions and environment to minimise the occurrence of disease. By demonstrating the interrelationships between husbandry, medicine and nutrition, the author shows how to prevent diseases and to maximise the genetic potential made possible with modern breeds of poultry. Each of the main poultry species - chicken including breeder and broiler, turkey and duck - is dealt within separate chapters that each explain the principle of disease control with the emphasis on preventative medicine. All aspects of care are drawn together to provide guidance on devising a rigorous health regime that is controlled by proper management. Chapters on hatchery, nutrition, environment and housing examine topics such as planning, ventilation, hygiene, quality control and medication. The important role of genetics in flock health is discussed encompassing important issues such as genetic resistance to disease, vertically transmitted diseases and strategies for disease control. The Health of Poultry provides a holistic view of health and welfare of poultry. As such, it will be a highly practical addition to the bookshelves of poultry farmers, specialists and veterinarians. 4-0 out of 5 stars A bit dated, but VERY through guide for anyone
Yes, some of the information in this book is dated. Tho, this is one of the most through chicken books I own (and I own them all!!). It was first written in 1944, my version is the 2nd revised book which was printed in 1977.

In the 'How to get Started' chapter 2, this book covers for the novice:where to get supplies, it also covers started chicks and ready-to-lay pullets and the other ABC's for the total novice. Also included were several black and white photos of equipment, homemade brooders and battery pens.

This book is one of the most through books when it comes to plans for chicken coops & feeders. It includes plans for a 6x8, 10x12 & 20x40ft coop and the author includes a bill of materials needed for each plan listed. There are also plans for nesting boxes, homemade mash feeder, range shelter, feed bin and a range feeder. Definitely, it is one of the most through chicken books I own on the included building plans.

Also the book covers butchering, preserving eggs and surplus chicken meat. It also has a decent health section with a few black & white photos. The health section covers probably the few most common chicken ailments at that time (ie bumblefoot, cholera, etc.). The common chicken breeds of the era are covered a bit, but not much.

Keep in mind when reading that this book wasn't really written when chickens were kept as well-loved pets. If you keep chickens for pure pleasure and profit as I do... you may be a bit offended when the author discusses comb-dubbing and states that chickens don't feel much pain. I totally disagree. Chickens are just good at hiding their symptoms or pain, but they DO feel pain.

Overall, a good, but obviously a bit dated book that anyone would learn from. Tho, I would pair this with an updated chicken health book such as Gail Damerow's 'Chicken Health Handbook' and perhaps a book on the various chicken breeds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
I am animal control officer and needed a good book about poultry as a reference. The ABC of Poultry Raising is excellent. It covered all the basic husbandry aspects but, was not too detailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for novice or old timers
We have raised laying hens since the early 80's and have read and owned many a book on chickens, and this one is one of the best. It deals with everything from how to get started, equipment needs, controlling disease and managing ones flock. From egg stage and broody hens (those who sit on the nest and hatch eggs) to feed and water issues and housing and breeds. It is an all around fact book that I think any beginner chicken person should read. And I even learned some new things from the book as well.

Product Description
Poultry are farmed and are important sources of protein throughout the world. All students of agriculture are likely to be required to study poultry science to at least an introductory level. However, hitherto there has been no suitable textbook serving the needs of students taking a general introductory course in poultry science. This book aims to fill this gap. It explains the science underlying the productive processes of growth, reproduction and incubation. The applications of nutrition and breeding techniques are described. The book covers all the commercially important poultry species, including turkeys, quail, guinea fowls, ducks and geese, but the main emphasis is on the domestic fowl. The overall purpose is to provide the student with an understanding of the characteristics and physiological responses of domesticated poultry, with particular reference to production. The emphasis is on modelling responses rather than on biochemical and hormonal processes. The author stresses basic concepts and models, rather than practical production systems, so that the book should have worldwide applicability. The book represents a key text for degree and advanced diploma courses in agriculture. ... Read more
