Great basic how-to-cook any meat book!
I love cooking and collect cookbooks that are written for day-to-day use and this is one I value highly. A lover of seafood I have always been weak at purchasing, preparing and cooking meats and poultry. This book explains all - without the hoity-toidy sous chef flamboyance of many cookbooks. I recommend this highly for new, curious and just married cooks who like to eat well and appreciate a well served dish. Very practical
I give this book only 4 stars, because it does not cover at all that poultry can be eaten and how to butcher and prepare poultry for the table.
But the rest is very good. It covers day to day topics and the herbal cures given are not exotic and you can grow most of the herbs in your own garden.

Great Reviews - Best Book on Gamefowl
After reading the raving reviews from different sources about this book I had to buy it and must say, it is the most concise and informative book on the subject with hundreds of excellent color photos of gamefowl breeds from all over the world, Japan, Thailand,Pakistan, Europe etc. The book goes beyong just the description and development of the many gamefowl breeds all over the world, it deals with their breeding, feeding and maintenance and the use for cockfighting in countries where it is still a national sport and part of their culture. In forming a recollection of that compelling moment when I laid my tongue upon a frozen hammerhead--an act some forty years past--I trust my memory completely. I give this trust based on the electric clarity with which I can resurrect the physical sensation of my taste buds tacking themselves to the subzero steel with a merciless subcellular crinkle. I see no need to verify this reminiscence by licking additional frozen hammers. Still, memory is a notoriously unreliable narrator, and therefore, whenever possible, I rummage around for verification. Sometimes it is as simple as calling Mom. When you took my brother Jud to the Frost-Top Drive-In on his first day with the family after the social worker dropped him off, did he (as I recall) really eat his hamburger, wrapper and all? He ate the wrapper, says Mom, but it was a hot dog. And so the correction is made.* In other instances the verification is archival. Seeming to remember that I experienced my first religious conversion after a spate of bad behavior in third grade, I traveled to the grade school of my childhood and was allowed to rummage through a box in the subterranean boiler room until I found my third grade report cards. In other cases we strive not for verification but elicitation. In looking at the first photo on the right I can recall what it was like to be a shirtless farm boy in the sun; the straw-like smell of the stubble and how it pricked the soles of my bare feet; and, out of the blue, an unexpected emotional wallop as I recognize my mother’s handwriting and realize that the evocation of a person hardly requires their likeness. Literal traces will do.

Sometimes--and I am not speaking here of fabrication--we must construct memories we never retained. Poorly-lit as it is, the secpnd photo tells me much about my world as it was on my third day of life: that my father was the type of man who would grab a sheet of discarded stock from the paper mill of his employment and fashion a sign to welcome his wife and firstborn son home from the hospital; that the big ship painting currently hanging upstairs in my parents farmhouse has been in the family since the beginning; and finally (this required close study until I made out the rocking chair in the shadows, and further realized that the two strips of shininess visible toward the right side of the piano were reflected from the gilded pages of two bibles), I was able to conjure the week-old me, safe in my mother’s arms, the Word of God close at hand, belief and unbelief yet to come.

*The question of Mom as unreliable narrator is not to be raised. Shame on you.

What a Fraud!
While I wouldn't say that I enjoy every book I read, it is not often that I feel I have actually been defrauded in the purchase of a book.But this is that rare example.

"Coop" purports to be about a family and their efforts to raise chickens and hogs.This is one of my favorite genre, so I picked it up at an airport connection.(I should have looked more carefully - the blurbs are from essentially nobodies.)

I'm up to about page 200 and so far the total number of pages discussing chickens, chickens coops, eggs, and pigs is probably less than 15....! Where is that "pursuit of one good egg" in your next book?

The 200 pages have basically been made up of folksy reminiscences that are so gauzy and positive as to essentially be treacly.This candy is way too sweet.The author's constant attempts to be self-effacing are also not convincing.

When you finally thrown this down in disgust, go read Noel Perrin's "First-Person Rural" series, you will not be disappointed.Page after page of the rank amateur trying to make a part-time farm function.

Best so far
Michael Perry continues to provide humerous and emotional insight to his rural life.He certainly is walking his own path.

Life On A Farm Is Not Simple
Many memoirist have a hard time pulling off the self-depreciating humor angle, Perry is definitely a writer that stands out from the rest.He uses his humble beginnings and his misadventures in farming and family to bring the reader into his world. With just the right amount of wit, you see Michael Perry for the kind and considerate father and man that make this world a better place.

In Coop, Michael and his wife share a one-year adventure on 35plus acres of land, with the combining of family, farm and a new child on the way life just is not the simple journey that he remembers with parents that made due in rather unique ways and friends that come to the rescue with inventive solutions to the daily traumas that farm life brings.

If you are looking for a true "farming" book, this is not it, but if you are looking for laugh out loud moments on a farm with a clueless farmer and his flock of family and friends than I highly recommends this book.However, do note that there are gut wrenching moments that will bring tears to your eyes and that will take the reader on a full circle of human emotions.

This is a delightful little book......
It outlines the ordinary lives of ordinary people and provides many chuckles.By all means, read this light-hearted story.You will find a tear or two mixed in but it's feel good writing from beginning to end.

The widely popular author of "Population-485, Truck" and many others (and he sings too) is back doing what he does best--chronicling Wisconsin rural life. If you ever considered having a pen full of pigs and chasing chickens while trying to make various writing deadlines--toss in a wife and kids, an array of colorful memories, and you have the basic ingredients of Perry's latest work; "Coop."

The author has penned a memoir of a year in the life of a dairy farmer's son who struggles with the fact that--he an't like his Daddy. Meaning--Perry is no farmer. That's the underlying root that Perry wrestles with, and boy does it seem to drive him crazy. It's the writing that kept me turning the pages even though, more times than not, I had to consult the computer for definitions of Perry's unique word choices. Though it's obvious he's a brilliant wordsmith, he shines brightest when describing his world as he trudges his way through it. The man drinks up experiences and reflects back on them in a refreshingly imaginative way that carries the seemingly mundane daily farm life into new realms.

Throughout the year, Perry laments that he has yet to build his dream coop and from the constant self-deprecating banter he unfurls about his lack of building skills, I really had to wonder why in the world he didn't just hire the job out? Standing by his side is the near-saintly wife who can inspire affection in Perry by simply performing a farmer-snort, (think air hanky and you're close) births their baby at home and can butcher a deer on the dining room table like no one's business. Sounds like a match made in heaven and perfect material for a darn good read.

Perry adopts his wife's child from a previous marriage and `Amy' begins asking about God and this, in turn, throws Perry into a really sticky situation. It seems that his parents were (and still are) Fundamentalists belonging to a rather obscure sect called simply "Truth." Though he never comes right out and says it, Perry seemed less than impressed with religion overall and disappointed in the specific one his parents hauled him off to as a young boy. Yet, after their second child is born, Perry and family head off in search of the right church in hopes of re-creating the foundation that his parents had given him.

The most moving passages in this work were the horribly sad deaths that Perry experienced during the writing of, "Coop." Several friends pass away and leave Perry in a mist of memories that have the power to pull and tug him in countless directions. Then his brother's son drowns in a pond and it is here that Perry lays all bare, displaying his greatest gift. Perry understands loss and despair in all its endless depth and expresses it with a full pallet of emotion; his introspection within this realm is simply extraordinary.

And yes, in the end, Perry builds his coop--and--it's cool.
