I read 1/3 of the book, and skipped around to places of various interest before losing interest.

I dont think the author knows how to teach, and I dont even think that is his motive, although it should be. If I was trying to reveal such wonderful stuff I would make it as basic and understandable and organized as I could, so that the average high school kid could read it with a little bit of thought (or if there was a certain level of knowledge in physics or math that was required to understand what is in this book, i would point out the right type of source to learn the prerequisites). That would help create more people that support this stuff. basically: since it isnt presented in an easily understandable manner it kind of grinds the credibility.

If you are looking for the type of knowledge that will help you build anything to demonstrate anything new and exciting, then forget it. If you are looking for various information that isnt neccessarily organized for any practicle purpose, besides to understand something you already understand better.... this is for you.

Well, I have little idea about where should I start.

In any case, and after reading this very interesting book, I found an impressive amount of unknown data that I have enjoyed a lot. I began studying gravitics from a fusor, and finally reached Podkletnov experiment, who marked my life forever. The same subquamtum kinetics Paul explains, is mostly the same conclussions I obtained myself after 8 years of intense researching in the topic. Almost same conclusions are obtained, but in a different way, since, as engineer, I got just relativistic theory as a medium to write it scientifically. Right now I have another approach into the matter, and right now I know also tons more that I knew just a month ago, before reading this book.

I must thank Paul for his quickly reply when emailed him, and his kindly behaviour. Thats not the type of person that gives up so easily.

Personal thinkings away, I must admit that this book is "uneasy" to many ppl out there, and classic so called "scientist" inmediatly refuses this book's contents. I have got in some troubles because that, so not new to me already.

As someone else stated before, you must have a minimum of scientific knowledge to understand what this books tries to tell you (especially physics and math, since Paul tries to explain it the way he knows), and of course, and most important, a very open mind.

By definition, a scientist is an open minded person, so those who calls themselves such, should think twice before stating "stupidities" about the facts and the wrongs.

Movement is demonstrated moving out. The facts, in effect, are so persistant, that neglecting them is like neglecting oneself.

Wow.This book is awsome.For decades I have felt that Einstein was all wrong.Now I know it.This book is very technical and my not be for everybody.However, even if you're not an engineer or scientist, you will get a lot out of this.This should be required reading in every college engineering or science cirriculum.

Just check out the negative reviews.They are quite condescending to the would-be buyers... making it seem like anyone who buys and reads this book must be crazy kook who runs around with aluminum-foil hat on 24-7.

I see phrases like "woe to the misled imbecile" or "if you are stupid and proud of it, this is the book for you".I find these reviews insulting, but at the same time it makes me wonder if these reviews were planted here to dissuade a purchase.

I'm a science-minded professional myself, and I have many friends, colleagues, associates and clients who are scientists.All I can say is that the level of arrogance in the scientific community is astounding.What else could it be but complete ARROGANCE that makes people think that everything we know about science has already been discovered (and if we haven't discovered it, then it will fit neatly into a well-defined little box when we do)?

It's well known in scientific social circles that if you ever bring up the subject of UFOs, anti-gravity, aliens, "free energy" or any other "fringe science" topic with any seriousness, you immediately discredit yourself and any and all of your work.This is very sad, and because of this attitude we are holding ourselves back more than we realize... Seems a little bit like the "dark ages" all over again.

Yes, the law of conservation of energy is amazing, and makes everything fit into that neat little box... but, I wish the mainstream scientific community would expand it's mind a little.There is a lot more out there that is yet to be discovered. ... Read more

This is a great book for those interested in rocket propulsion; engineers, student and peers. In detail it begins with an overall view of propulsion systems (including electrical) to then in different chapters treat subjects such as, stability, liquid propellants, solid propellants, turbomachinery, construction challenges (with solutions) and injectors etc. In addition, it contains questions and worked problems. I also own the seventh edition released in 2000.

Although ridden with mathematical formulas and diagrams, it's an easy-to-read book if you are a undergraduate student in engineering/science. Beacuse of this a certain amount of knowledge in most scientific fields are required (chemistry, mechanical engieering, math and physics) otherwise the marvels explained can't be fully appreciated.

I got this book for a class I was taking and it has a good review of thermodynamics in the first part of the book. There are plenty of examples to help reinforce each topic and usually there is a cumulative example at the end of a each major section. The notation is in line with that at major design firms. The reason this gets a 4/5 instead of 5/5 is there are some typos which are very tricky. In some places the exponent of an equation will be flipped or the wrong equation will be referenced. There weren't many of these and hopefully they will be fixed in a second edition. ... Read more

This is the best textbook written on the modeling and performance prediction of gas turbine engines. A systematic method is used to model a variety of engines from the basic turbojet to the advanced afterburning turbofan used in modern fighters. Performance predictions include the effect of engine controls - a unique feature. Turbomachinery design includes structural considerations. This book is a great textbook for junior/senior level courses in aerospace/mechanical engineering. It is being used for a basic course in gas turbine engine and a followup course in engine component design...

The foreword by Hans von Ohain is very good.I always like the aerospace textbooks that have some sort of history or commentary before getting into the equations.The content of the book is very thorough, and the equations are often grouped into step-by-step methods to analyze an engine which can be imported into a program like Excel very easily.The support programs are good enough for most applications that a student will run into.However, there appears to be a very large amount of typographical errors in this book.Most of them are minor and can be caught quickly, but I have seen a couple of major equations (2.76 for example) with errors.Considering that the textbook is for students who aren't always used to these equations, this can lead to a lot of confusion.This is compounded by the use of both BE and SI units in the text.These same problems occurred in the last edition.Overall I would still recommend using the book for a class, but beware of the errors. ... I prefer this book to Sutton for bacis understanding of the compressible flow as it relates to rocketry.Also, the explanation of the rocket equation is far simpler in this text than any other.

This was our class text book for the "jet and rocket propulsion" course in our aerospace department when I took the class. I am thoroughly dissatisfied with the book. I think maybe this book is written to provide a general understanding of how things work maybe.. because it had a lot of writing and not much math/equations and even less examples.

We had a big assignment in our class where we had to write a software that gave the temperature and pressure in every single component of a jet engine with afterburner - diffuser, compressor, combuster, burner, bleed air, etc - and this book did not help one bit. It is like the author will spend pages talking about jet engines in essay form, not many equations. And often, such as in the case of the after burner, he will just say it is similar to another component (in this case the combustion chamber), but that is not enough when you are deriving the relations for various kinds of engines.

Maybe this books is great if you already know all the math, and just want to know interesting stuff about engines.. I guess it will compliment your mathematical knowledge and provide you with the bigger picture. But you will have to learn to do the calculations from another book (and you ccant design an engine without doing such calculations).

Basically me and my group had to come up with ALL the equations on our own, the book only proved to be a waste of space on the table. We instead preferred to go back to the text we had used in Thermodynamics class since that was a much better book.

This is just the best book for propulsion. But maybe not for beginners. And may be not for those who just want to score marks in exams by practicing large no. of problems but not caring for real & physical understanding of jet engines.

Yeah, that's a big statement, but considering the fact that I own 7 other major propulsion books and refer to this one 10 times more than any of the others, I think it's definitely true.All of the top Aerospace Engineering schools use it, and for good reason.

It is NOT a teach-yourself book.If that is what you are into, then go buy something with more pretty pictures, because some sections take some work to dig into.But if you are Senior level or grad student, then the book will be very good for you.The content in the book is very insightful, and if you go through the book concurrently with a course it is a great help. ... This book is excellent for Aerospace Engineering students and engineers alike. Contains plenty of graphs, tables, and "back-of-the-napkin" equations.

I wouldn't recommend this so much as a "learning the concepts" text book,as it doesnt always explain the data it is present very well. However for those already familiar with the topics covered it provides excellent reference.

I'm working in the Aerospace industry and for me there are only two books on the subject that I use for unclassified reference litterature - this book and "Rocket Propulsion Elements" by C. Sutton.
This book covers almost everything on the preliminary design level of a rocket propulsion system. Except for the typing errors this book is perfect. And I can surely recommend it for students as well as professionals.

Il testo analizza tutti i motori per la propulsione spaziale; a propellente liquido (bi e mono), solido, ibrido, a gas freddo,nucleare ed elettrico.
Una parte è dedicata anche all'apetto della missione orbitale e per la specifica missione anche quale tipo di propulsiore impiegare.
Per quando riguarda la tematica strettamente motoristica vengono presi in considerazione le problematiche di carattere progettuale senza però entrare nei particolare.
Il libro si conferma così "un buon punto di partenza". Personalmente lo consiglio a tutti quelli che volessero "iniziare a saperne di più". La "matematica" dei calcoli NON è a livello "universitario", e la lettura è molto scorrevole.
Un'attenzione particolare va rivolta alla bibliografia, dove vengono citati report tecnici della NASA reperibili anche in rete.

This is an outstanding book by a knowledgeable author that provides the basic know-how and skills that an aeronautical or mechanical engineer with an interest in jet propulsion will find useful and helpful. The book is well written in a readable and easy to follow format that provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of jet propulsion. The author clearly presents the concepts, principles and design issues of modern gas turbine engines.

The reader will learn the various components of a jet engine including the intake design, compressors, turbines, combustion chamber designs, and the jet pipe and how thrust is produced as well as the physics and thermodynamics that go with these.

The book has great explanations, diagrams and figures that the reader will find useful and helpful. I recommend the book to engineers wishing to learn more about the jet engine.

This book keeps up with the promise in the title. It is a easily readable guide to design and perfomance of jet engine with a rigorous treatise of each field, even if the level remains simple.

In fact the mathematical exposition is quite accessible, without a full analytical presentation. Nevertheless the formulae are clearly given with an effective theorical background when needed. Since the volume target is to clarify ideas and principles, each topic is attractively examined, emphasizing the qualitative treatment over the quantitative analysis to improve understanding of physical phenomena. This facet is quite useful because it allows an overall comprehension in mastering design process of jet engine. Besides, the emphasis on having a clear picture of principles provides the basis for a fair evaluation ofengine perfomances under real conditions.

First, I would like to compliment the shipper who sold me the book, which was in very good unused condition.The book is rated as one of the best if not the best fundamental book on hypersonic propulsion.It flows well by giving a basic understanding of high speed flight and then slowly works into a more detailed description.The book does a great job outlining assumptions to hypersonic flight and reviews physics behind high speed flight and even briefly outlines some fundamental concepts as they apply to kinetic theory.

An extremely well-written, clear overview of scramjet engines.The authors do a remarkable job presenting the information in an understandable manner.The book performs a one-dimensional analysis aimed at giving the reader an "engineering intuition" of the topic, without introducing the complexities that arise in a three-dimensional analysis.While the book is self-contained, an undergraduate-level understanding of thermodynamics and supersonic flow makes the read easier.

However, some changes are in order.In the Special Topics sectionl, a table presents the thermal stresses and thermal durability of several materials--without specifyingthe temperature and pressure for the materials.As material propertieschange drastically at high temperatures, such tables are incomplete withoutthe above information.I hesitated in using the information in my designreport, and asked my materials and manufacturing professor about it aswell.He agreed that this information must be provided for the table to beof any use.It would also help if you specify the units afterpresenting an equation.Yes, we can figure it out, but try sitting on yourbehind for hours on end and having to stop every so often in your design tofigure out the units for an equation! This is by far the best book on the topic I have found.If you plan to design or model any vehicle, but in particular a hybrid or electric vehicle, I recommend you own this book.

Specifically, a large portion of the mathematical models required for design-level calculations are available directly from the text.The text is very concise, making good use of external citations to remain thorough.Finally, the optimization case studies are very helpful in understanding hybrid design goals.

Highly Recommended for engineers and students with some experience in vehicles.

If you're an expert or a student, or even a hobbyist with a lot of free time, anyone wanting to learn how to use numerical integrators (e.g. Matlab (c)) to model specific automobile components and vehicle performance should get this book.Here are a few components:Thermal Battery Models, Brushless DC Motors, Continuously Variable Transmissions, Pneumatic Accumulators, Fuel Reformers (for Fuel Cells), and of course IC Engines, Automatic Transmissions, and EVERYTHING in between.

You can essentially design and analyze whatever automotive powertrain you'd like, electric hybrids, fuel cells, or pure ICEs, and put it through any type of command or velocity based schedule.It's a very "hands-on" book.There's even an online resource with Matlab (c) examples.

Wow.$50 for this little beauty.
The first chapter is a nice, but very brief (and consequently spotty), review of the history of rocketry, followed by a pretty good discussion of the physics or rocket flight.Gives the impression that this is going to be a pretty advanced text.
The next three chapters are so flawed as to be almost indigestible, featuring numerous erroneous statements and figures, as well as references to popular fiction as examples of technological innovation.The author displays a poor understanding of the current state of chemical propulsion and rocket technology.
The fifth and sixth chapters concern electric and micro-propulsion, and are handled rather well.
Chapter seven is a look at propellantless propulsion, not so much "advanced" as "speculative."
Chapter eight concerns "Breakthrough Propulsion."I was particularly intrigued (flabbergasted) by the implication that if we just wait a few years, limitations placed on space travel (mass and speed) by the Theory of Relativity will probably vanish.
Three short chapters of reasonably good content.Five short chapters of questionable merit.A pretty nice Further Reading section.$50.Wow.

such a small book for such a big price, if you at all interested in spacecraft propulsion you are sure know all but the equations in this book, it is informative, but only if you are completely ignorant of how spacecraft move through space, i like this book, but its too pricey for what you get.

This slim book tries valiantly to summarize the entire range of space launch and in-space propulsion concepts, but does a questionable job of it.

The book has the usual problems of a very compressed summary -- some concepts, and many specific technologies and projects, are left out entirely, and there's no room to do more than briefly describe most of the concepts that are included.The level is variable:parts are apparently aimed at people with at least an undergraduate technical education -- there's lots of algebra, and more than a few differential equations -- yet many concepts are described only in qualitative terms, perhaps with a picture or diagram.Some references are to standard reference works or review articles intended for nonspecialists, while others are to specialized research papers likely to puzzle most readers who want more information -- assuming they can find the cited journals at all.

However, the book's major problem is that it's full of errors -- mostly minor individually, but distressing taken as a whole.I work in this field, and know many of the projects mentioned and researchers cited; without actively looking I noticed eleven errors in 38 pages.These range from a faulty diagram (Fig. 2.7) to a gross overstatement of the funding for one project, to fundamental errors in the descriptions of pulsed detonation engines ("a compression wave travels through the tube at the speed of sound" when in fact a detonation is a faster-than-sound process; a sonic or subsonic process is a deflagration) and pneumatic catapults.

If you want quick layman's introductions to a wide variety of advanced concepts, there are better summaries on line.

This book is the most complete guide I've ever seen. The best part about this book is that anyone can read it and get something from it. Even a PhD in aerospace engineering can use it as a reference.

I find the subject of this book, advanced space propulsion systems, very interesting.And there's plenty of good material in the book.Still, I wish it had delved into some of the topics in greater detail.And while I tend to try to be as comprehensive as possible when I cover a field, I have to admit that Tajmar covers some topics I would actually have skipped.

The book starts with a quick overview of rocket propulsion, including monopropellant and bipropellant engines.And we soon discover that Tajmar is going to take us from the fundamentals of rocket science into more speculative areas.He briefly discusses "advanced propellants" such as atomic hydrogen, metastable helium, and metallic hydrogen.Let's just say that in spite of (or maybe due to) my familiarity with these ideas, it would not have occurred to me to mention them in a book.

The author then evaluates launch assist technologies.These include aircraft assists, catapults, cannons, gas guns, ram accelerators, and electromagnetic (and magnetohydrodynamic) accelerators.There's even a mention of reducing drag with surface charging.

Next we get to nuclear propulsion.I would have expanded the section on fission propulsion, and thought twice about including the material on fusion propulsion and antimatter propulsion.

I think the best part of the book is the chapter on electric propulsion systems.There's plenty of information, including excellent photographs, of resistojets, arcjets, Hall thrusters, Kaufmann thrusters, Field Emission thrusters, Colloid thrusters, and more.Plus, there is a short section that could have been expanded on the threat of induced interactions between the plasma emitted by the propulsion system and the spacecraft.

Since this book looks to the future, that means a discussion of propulsion systems applicable for use on microspacecraft.Tajmar therefore includes a chapter on micropropulsion.

The next section is very interesting and not wholly speculative: "propellantless propulsion."That means tethers, laser propulsion, solar sails, and magnetic sails.Of these, I think solar sails surely deserved at least a few more pages.

The final chapter is a leap into what I think of as science fiction.That includes what I call "quantum propulsion" (an attempt to modify the vacuum and use the energy generated to propel a spacecraft).And it includes a attempts to couple gravitation and electromagnetism.And my, um, favorite: superconductor gravitational shielding.I might have omitted this chapter.

The book introduces the theory and operating principles of gas turbine engines.The fundamental concepts of the turbine engines design are spelled out. The primary systems and accessories of the gas turbine engine are also discussed.

The book provides an excellent foundation in gas turbine engines and jet propulsion theory for aerospace or mechanical engineers. It is presented at the graduate and senior undergraduate level and provides a comprehensive coverage of all the fundamentals in a reader-friendly manner that also works beautifully as a professional reference.

The book is well written and easy to follow with clear explanations and numerous illustrations and pictures to reinforce the basic concepts, trends, and design examples. The book also has several worked examples and many homework problems all which help the reader to grasp and apply the concepts. This is one of the best books available on the market on gas turbine engines and is therefore highly recommended.

This has got to be the most complete turbine book I have ever seen.Containing pretty much everything on cycle analysis, it even provides a good review of thermodynamics and compressible flow.Itdoes, however, look to be a little difficult to teach from with eqautions and graphs flying about, but to the knowledged user it will serve as a great and complete reference.(There are some errors in the text you might want to correct found on the book's webpage.)

This is the best textbook written on the modeling and performance prediction of gas turbine engines. A systematic method is used to model a variety of engines from the basic turbojet to the advanced afterburning turbofan used in modern fighters. Performance predictions include the effect of engine controls - a unique feature. Turbomachinery design includes structural considerations. This book is a great textbook for junior/senior level courses in aerospace/mechanical engineering. I bought the book "Elements of Gas Turbine Propulsion" in Augustof 1999 and I still read it almost everyday. It is a very interesting book,but it has a seriousflaw in that there are so many errors, it appearsthat the editor(s) were asleep or out to lunch. It was a greatdisserviceto the author, as I think he was shortchanged by the publisher. Being aformer member of the USAF, myself I feel that his work was more meticulousthan this. Perhaps the publisher was in such a hurry to hit the presses atall costs, that this is the result. This seems to be the trend in recentyears. I believe that one of the major networks did and expose regardingmajor publishing house oversights in this area.

This is a good place to start delving into the subject. Contains a little more than the plethora of "lifter" website and in fact distinguishes that the "lifter" technology is but one form of research into "electrogravitics."

This is a relatively thin book, but dense with information. The book starts with details of the state of the art in the 50s and 60s, and then wraps up with some essays from the 90s speculating on a link with the B-2 bomber. There are some current, short essays in the form of forwards and prefaces. The book has diagrams, a pretty good glossary, and a tech chronology.

A great book for anyone into electrogravitics systems or with any real interest in new propulsion technology. This book is made up of several reports and writings pieced together. Some Physics is a must to understand this book. If you are not at all familiar with the some basic principles it will be hard to understand what much the book speaks of. The author takes for granted a certain level of Physics education and familiarity with the subject.

Only other thing is that this book takes about a month to get, but it is worth the wait.
