5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLE AND BASIC
Dr. Waitley apparently spoke to my father and grandfather years ago about success, both of whom instilled in me a basic love and appreciation of life, starting with simple questions "is the glass half-full or half-empty?" He discusses the top ten qualities of a successful life, and he reminds all of us that it is so basic by taking a positive approach to life.He talks about taking action today and forget all that "maybe tomorrow" downers/patterns that keep us bogged down, and never moving to the winner's circle.Winning is so sweet and it is available by appying his formulas for for being successful. Some of the book is dated, like OJ and and his appearance in the book, and possibly some his concepts could be challenged in psychology and research, but still very appropriate and applicable to our lives today.I bought a copy for each of my three teenagers - a good primer for their upcoming careers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is what is called an "essential book" not only for business people but for all individuals that want to achieve goals in life. The book is a reminder of all those important things some of us know, and for other people that may never had the "concept of winning" as a principle when they were growing upit is a great tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Advice that really works
My introduction to Dr. Denis Waitley was in 1984. I bought a 90 minute condesnsed verion of this book. I was sold immediately and the 10 qualities of a total winner had an immediate impact in my life, personally and professionally.

Aside from the fact that Dr. Waitley has a doctorate in behavorial therapy, there is something special about Dr. Waitley, his writings and the way he speaks. He is much more than a motivational rah-rah guy and he is much more than just a behavorial therapist. Dr. Waitley seems to combine his scientific background with motivational and inspiritional concepts that really work. Listening to him in person is a delight. And his audio programs are outstanding. He mixes humor with education and comes across like he genuinely cares about you....becuase he does.
The Psychology of Winning will bring out that winner in you. A fantastic program that actually delivers on it's promises. And you can get the paperback for less than the price of a good meal.

Dr. Waitley's "New Dynamics of Winning" is also a must read for anyone who wants to bring out their best.

Great stuff. Thank you Dr. Waitley. I am looking forward to your next foray.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting & Easy Reading
Even though this book references O.J. Simpson it is still an awesome mind booster for those who want to make positive changes in their life. Each chapter is just the right length and I really like the way he recaps at the end of the chapter and makes it so simple to understand how to be a winner!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Unscientific
Waitley talks as if he studied Olympic athletes and successful people, then codified their strategies. This is obviously an exaggeration.Ninety percent of this book is speculation prefaced with, "Winners do such and such."The such and such is something that Waitley did not observe winners doing. It's his own pet religion.

Another reason to avoid this book is his take on self-esteem.He fooled a lot of people a decade ago, including me, but now we know that high self-esteem is a better predictor of bullying and aggression than good grades or success.Self-acceptance is preferable.Don't ever wish self-esteem on your kids.

"Winners use a warm, open smile to project interest through active listening. That's why we have 2 eyes and two ears and only one mouth."

These are prescriptions, not descriptions, of what winners do and think.

How did he study "winners."He's constantly saying that "winners do such and such.Winners volunteer their names first.Winners care about the environment and are against nuclear energy."

So what measurement or standard did you have to meet to be counted in the winners category?Had to be an Olympic medalist or an officer in the military?Obviously, you don't do some research and find out that "the winners never meet you halfway or go 50/50.And winners use the KISS formula.Keep It Straightforward and Simple. They use words that don't evoke a double meaning."I guess that makes Shakespeare the biggest loser (unless you count Waitley).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Although it was listed as "used", the book was untouched.Thanks.Saved a lot of money buying through Amazon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Basic
Factually, this book gives a solid introduction to Psychology. As a textbook, however, there is considerable room for improvement. The chapter summaries at the end of the chapter are basic and short-- it provides a quick summary, but no review questions, practice quizzes, or suggestions for further explanation in different areas of Psychology. Compared to other textbooks I have used that are very similar to this one, this was by far the worst. The companion workbook that goes along with this book is also unimpressive when compared to workbooks for similar textbooks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Psych 101
I bought this book because it was a required text for my intro Psychology class. The book is readable, clear and informative.

2-0 out of 5 stars Psychology 10th Edition
The book gives a college introduction to psychology. It is sophisticated but, drags along at times before getting to a point. The chapter placements are not very continuous and topics can better arranged. The examples used to explain concepts are sometimes long and unneeded. So explanations of topics are also unclear such as the "garden path effect" and can confound readers at times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intersting and informative!
This book was assigned to my History and Systems of Psychology class as our textbook. My professor promised to the class on the first day that this was a book for a class that we would: 1) actually want to ready and 2) wouldn't be able to put down. I did not take his comment seriously at right but he was right! This book is highly readable, grabs your attention from the start, and keeps you wanting to turn to the next page. It tackles psychology (and often cases science as a whole) as a process that started hundreds of years ago. Hunt introduces the reader to many famous thinkers, and many unknowns to the average person, who had an effect (whether positive or negative) on the development of psychology as we know it today. If you are at all curious as to why psychology exists today and who developed its ideas, then this book is a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you want to know where psych started
Amazing!Loved the book and you will too if you love philosophy and psyc.It talks about everything from, socrates, aristotle, plato, the physicist, pythagoras!I loved it!Had to get the book because of a class I was taking in College and I can say this is one of my fav quote on quote text books :-D

5-0 out of 5 stars The Epic Tale of Behavioral Science
I guess some of the other reviewers didn't like Hunt's proclivity to characterize important psychologists but for me this is one of the aspects of this book that make it great. Yes, I think this book is great. Any book that can span over two thousand years of thinking and keep it interesting is great just on that basis in my opinion. Within these several hundreds of pages is a comprehensive overview of psychological research and theory, making it an essential resource for anyone interested in the subject. Once read, a reader will see whole vistas of new subject matter to explore. Totally recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I thought this book gave a clear summary of the history of psych and thus a broad perspective on the nature of psychology as philosophy/science. It was easily readable, concise, and thorough.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new psychology "handbook"
(This paperback was revised and updated in 2007)

I had the pleasure of taking a progressive Introduction to Psychology course from one of the nation's top psychology instructors and researchers, Dr. David Hothersall. Morton Hunt's The Story of Psychology could have made a good addition to the course readings. This text examines the psychological pioneers' lives and work in enlivening details that form them into real people. This is true even back thousands of years into Ancient Egypt and language experiments. Hunt points out the usefulness of psychology today in greater numbers of aspects than the understanding of human nature and motivation, which many people may feel to be the principal intent of psychology.

Hunt demonstrates this usefulness in properly administered and interpreted workplace testing. Proper testing lead to one's Dream Job, as it were - the best position to fulfill one's skills and the company's needs as well as one's desires. Psychology can also be used to aide the exploration of the universe, such as in helping to achieve long periods of far-off living on the International Space Station and aboard the future 4-month long voyages to and from Mars, not to mention to Luna, our oxygen-restricted Moon.

As Hunt warns about ill-used testing, Dr. Hothersall taught how white Anglo-Saxon language-based IQ tests placed minorities at a disadvantage. Out of a 350-member class taking an urban language-based test, I scored third highest - at 35 (well over a hundred points lower than previous testing). This proves Hunt's cautions as legitimate to me.

Overall, the Hunt revised volume is decidedly Western in worldview and contains the unvarnished opions of the author about advertising, George W. Bush, and what is germane to the development of psychology into the future. In addition, the author offers to uphold notions that minorities score lower that whites and females lower than males in IQ testing, because of undeniable and unchangeable genetics. However, this is strong challenge to find out for oneself.

Armchair Interviews says: The Story of Psychology would be a good read for psychology students and practitioners and anyone interested in the ways of psychology through the centuries, past and future. ... Read more

Product Description
Positive psychology is the scientific study of what goes right in life, from birth to death and at all stops in between. It is a newly-christened approach within psychology that takes seriously the examination of that which makes life most worth living.Everyone's life has peaks and valleys, and positive psychology does not deny the valleys. Its signature premise is more nuanced, but nonetheless important: what is good about life is as genuine as what is bad and, therefore, deserves equal attention from psychologists.Positive psychology as an explicit perspective has existed only since 1998, but enough relevant theory and research now exist to fill a textbook suitable for a semester-long college course.

A Primer in Positive Psychology is thoroughly grounded in scientific research and covers major topics of concern to the field: positive experiences such as pleasure and flow; positive traits such as character strengths, values, and talents; and the social institutions that enable these subjects as well as what recent research might contribute to this knowledge.Every chapter contains exercises that illustrate positive psychology, a glossary, suggestions of articles and books for further reading, and lists of films, websites, and popular songs that embody chapter themes.

A comprehensive overview of positive psychology by one of the acknowledged leaders in the field, this textbook provides students with a thorough introduction to an important area of psychology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Psychology
An excellent book on a relatively new approach to psychology. Should make for an excellent textbook for studnets of psych.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of a Primer for Positive Psychology
Excellent book if you want to understand the basics of Positive Psychology and all the scientific research that supports the field. Also it includes many practical ideas and exercises for use in any walk of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible Read on Positive Psychology
If you're looking for an accessible foundation in positive psychology that is content rich, research-based and practical, then this book is for you.

It's used as a college textbook by the author/professor at U of Michigan who is a pioneer in the field, but it's much more interesting and humorous than the textbooks I've read for my college classes. It doesn't have that typical textbook feeling, but it's richer in ideas than what is on the mass market on happiness.

And there are exercises to try out in your life to improve your happiness
at the end of each chapter. The author is brilliant and articulate. He's won teaching awards at U of M:you feel like you're in his classroom being taught by him without having to pay tuition--and that's positive! I learned about this book on a list of top 10 books on Happiness & Positive Psychology. It's a great book for psychology students, coaches, practicing psychologists and regular folk interested in the evolving and transforming field of positive psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cogent review of Positive Psychology
I confess that I gave up reading "Authentic Happiness" half-way through, so I was not biased toward positive psychology. However, this was a text for a PP coaching class I took, and I liked it a lot -- very clear, straight-forward, easy to understand, full of substantive and interesting research, and even a bit of humor. I found myself looking forward to reading the assignments. My only fuss (which the author says he'll rectify in the next edition) is an inherent testosterone bias, (e.g., a key element of happiness is "winning," expressed in masculine terms rather than the kind of fulfillment that a soccer mom might get from raising great kids). Altogether a good explication of the rationale and value of positive psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide to a Different Perspective
When I first heard of "positive psychology" I thought..."so what is negative psychology supposed to be?" The terminology shouldn't hang you up. Positive psychology is a look a what psychology can be sans the illness orientation. What this means is that you are really studying how people can use their minds without concentrating on how that thing they do with their hair is an obvious sign of their insecurity, their masturbatory tendencies, or their love affair with their anal stage of development. The book has great information but is not written in a stuffy or pretentious way. Without a doubt it is one of the most readable psychology books I've ever had the pleasure of recommending. Even though the author supplies the reader with tons of references to help him in his continued study, for the casual reader this book can easily stand by itself. If you are lucky enough to get this as a text book in college enjoy the course and the professor wise enough to chose this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seller great to work with!
Book was a good price and seller took care of me and shipped item quick!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many references
The information in the book is well written and useful, but there are too many mid-paragraph references. It's very distracting. It's almost as if they were trying to lengthen the book and did not have enough information to write. Here's an example from page 552 which appears mid-paragraph:
(Anderson & Hamilton, 2005; Bennett et al., 2004; Kassin, Fein, &Markus, 2008; Levitan, 2008; Livingston & Drwecki, 2007; Neto & Furnham, 2005).
That's just one reference from the first paragraph. There are 6 more on that page and hundreds throughout the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a textbook.
This book is, for the most part, easy to follow and understand. Some things are out of order and placed in random sections, which can make taking notes hard. Product Description
Career Paths in Psychology is a must-have resource for students contemplating a career in psychology, for psychologists considering switching between areas of psychology, and for professionals thinking of switching to psychology from another field. In this comprehensive anthology, authors selected for their distinction in their chosen careers offer their professional--and personal--perspectives on 19 different graduate-level careers in psychology. Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology, and readers will find thoughtful discussions, leavened with tips and insights gained from personal experience, on the full range, including (to name only a few) academia, clinical psychology, health and school psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and government service. Each chapter discusses the nature of the career, its advantages and disadvantages, how to prepare for it, typical activities, ranges of financial compensation, opportunities for employment, and the personal attributes needed for success in the career. "Day in the life" discussions give readers a glimpse into the prosaic realities, challenges, and rewards of each career that the lab or lecture hall rarely provides. Reprinted eight times since the publication of the first edition in 1997, Career Paths in Psychology is recognized as the "go-to" sourcebook for anyone seeking a candid portrait of different careers in this ever-changing field. The second edition has been expanded (discussions of five new careers added) and updated to reflect current trends and changes in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book review
The book I ordered was in great condition, just like it had been described and it arrived quickly. I am happy with the purchase and I will definitely come back and buy more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every basic path you can take!
I have been thinking about going back to uni to study psychology and since there are so many fields, I decided to buy this book to see which field would best suit me or be most interesting.
Many people major in psychology these days but this book is definately for those who are looking to obtain a MA/MS or higher, working as 'psychologists'.
I read a review saying how it was not in-depth enough and that it lacked in details but how much of one profession can ever be squeezed into a book, yet alone most of the career paths in psychology.
It covers all the basic areas and environment where a psychologist can work and each chapter is written by a psychologist working in that setting. It definately gives you an idea of what it's basically like to be working in that particular field, highlighting most expectations that you are likely to come across.
It can get a little confusing after reading five different chapters but if you're looking to see which profession in psychology might suit you or like best, then this book is the way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Career Paths in Psychology:Where your degree can take you

5-0 out of 5 stars Career Paths in Psychology: Where Your Degree Can Take You
I found this book to be very useful because each chapter describes and discusses a different field of psychology and includes current opportunities and pay ranges. At the end of each chapter first-hand experience is shared by a Psychologist that is currently practicing or formerly practiced in the specific area of psychology being discussed. This book is a valuable resource for students pursuing or interested in pursuing a career in psychology; assisting in clarifying areas of specialty, expectations, and opportunities. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars nice content but...
It's a great textbook for psychology but don't get the looseleaf version. I didn't realize it was, so I had to put it in a binder to keep it all together!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast shipping and economical alternative to bound textbook
5 stars for shipping and affordability.I am taking a Psychology survey course online and registered late...needed textbook quickly and didn't want to pay the prices at the campus bookstore...this arrived on time (yay Prime shipping!) and I have it in a simple 3 ring binder and it works just fine for what I need it to be.You will need to be careful turning pages, as this is loose leaf, but a good D-ring binder that doesn't pull on the pages will suffice. Arrived in perfect condition, shrink wrapped and with no signs or use or wear.I am rating the process and the product, of course, not the content. I have to buy what the Prof tells me to, no matter what I think of the content, lol!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book was a good choice for my psychology class. As far as textbooks go, it's easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect
Besides the fact that its kinda big and heavy for my weak little arms, its a good and helpful book, came quickly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Received as Advertised
This book was advertised as a new hardcover book. When I received the book, all the corners were crushed, and the bottom of the back cover has a 1 1/2 inch rip or cut right next to the binding and the front cover is ripped or cut for about 1 inch in the same place.Unfortunately, they take so long to ship that I would not have had a replacement in time for school. So, I am stuck with this one.It is pretty beat up but all the pages are there so it is useable.I got lucky there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Psychology Textbook
Its simple I loved this book all around. Its very intresting and does a great job of going over each important aspect of psychology. Also I really liked the little samples here and there they seem to have supported the chapters in a good way. I bought this textbook for a summer school class and decided just to keep it because I liked it so much!

1-0 out of 5 stars ????

5-0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Psychology: An Integrative Approach (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac®)
I ordered this book for my son Mike's Abnormal Psych class. It was complete as stated, clean, and had the CD-ROM and Info-Trac (even though he has yet to use it)....and we received it in a timely manner. Man...I have to tell you, we were sweatin' bullets that he would get it in time for his class because my son always tells me at the last minute--not his fault; it's the school. But THIS dealer {Oceanside Media} was FAST and Johnny-on-the-spot in getting it out! ...AND it was solidly wrapped to withstand a small nuke...well, maybe not a nuke, but it arrived safe and secure. I knew I was in good hands after I tried to find any negative reviews. Note I said, "...tried..." (Yes, darlin's, so I'm NEUROTIC. HaH, hah, hah!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Psychology
The book was purchased for my daughter who's in her Sophmore year at a University. She informed me that the book was received on her second day of school, and in excellant condition. I paid slightly more that $15 for the book, where her class mates paid approximately $150 for the same book through the University.

I will continue to purchase her text books through Amazon when ever possible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate
Inaccurate on ME (CFS).For example, it says there is no evidence to support immune dysfunction or virus as causes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Course Text Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product and seller!
I got exactly what I thought I was buying. This is a really convenient way to have a textbook, because you can just stick it in a three-ring binder and take it with you! Also, you can just take a few chapters if you want, or the whole book! The pages are a little thin, but it's a wonderful educational textbook. As a B.A. in psychology, I would recommend this book to anyone looking to have a great learning experience and a textbook that doesn't cost a fortune. ... Product Description
Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Fourth Edition, the new edition of the best-selling sport and exercise psychology book on the market, continues to provide a thorough introduction to the key concepts in the field. Written by internationally respected authors, it provides students and new practitioners with a comprehensive view of sport and exercise psychology, bridges the gap between research and practice, conveys principles of professional practice, and captures the excitement of the world of sport and exercise.

A supreme effort has been made to meet the increasing needs of professors, practitioners, and students. To further improve the total learning experience, the new edition features
• an online study guide that provides an interactive learning experience for students;
• thoroughly updated material that reflects the latest research and practice in the field to keep students aware of recent findings and hot topics in the field; and
• more contemporary practical examples, case studies, and anecdotes to help students understand various theories and concepts.

Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Fourth Edition, allows students to gain an understanding of the field while learning how to apply sport and exercise knowledge. The book contains seven parts that may be studied in any sequence. Part I introduces students to the field, detailing its history, current status, and the various roles of sport and exercise psychologists. Part II focuses on personal factors that affect performance and psychological development in sport, physical education, and exercise settings. In part III, the authors focus on two major classes of situational factors that influence behavior: competition and cooperation, and feedback and reinforcement. Part IV focuses on group interaction and processes, while part V discusses how psychological techniques may be used to help people perform more effectively. Part VI addresses the various roles psychological factors play in health and exercise. The final section, part VII, deals with main topics of psychological development and well-being that are important to both society and sport and exercise psychology, including children’s psychological development through sport participation, aggression in sport, and moral development and good sporting behavior in sport and physical activity contexts.

The online study guide is a trend-setting addition that will allow the subject of sport psychology to come alive to its users. The study guide is written to work directly with the text; mentions of the study guide appear in each chapter to encourage readers to take advantage of the study guide’s learning tools. Audio clips feature esteemed experts in the field discussing key course concepts that they have studied and refined during their professional careers. Video clips provide students with a realistic look at how sport psychologists interact and communicate with athletes to improve athletic experiences. These multimedia formats help students understand the research and practice of sport psychology in today’s society. This online study guide also features more than 90 individual and small-group learning activities that may be printed and handed in or e-mailed to instructors for assessment. These activities require students to

• use actual sport and exercise psychology instruments to assess their skills,
• determine how to respond to real-life scenarios (with short answers or essays),
• review and design research studies and experiments,
• search the Internet for relevant information, and
• apply and test their understanding of sport and exercise psychology principles and concepts.

Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Fourth Edition, also supplies in-depth learning aids to help students think more critically about applying the material. These aids include chapter objectives and summaries, informative sidebars, key terms, key points, and discussion questions in each chapter. Even the design, artwork, and photos have been updated to make the material more interesting and accessible to readers. To accommodate a variety of preferences and teaching styles, chapters are written so that they stand alone and can be taught either in or out of order.

In addition to the inclusion of the new online study guide for students, the instructor ancillaries have also been improved. Updates have been made to the presentation package containing more than 900 PowerPoint slides, the test bank of more than 800 questions, and the instructor guide. These resources may all be found at the book’s Web site.

Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Fourth Edition provides a powerful learning tool for understanding human behavior in sport and exercise settings. This new edition continues to ensure that future researchers and practitioners in the field are well equipped and enthused about the possibilities and challenges they will encounter. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Horribly organized and written but quite informational
Perhaps I'm not being fair on discussing how this book is being organized since so many of the ideas overlap so heavily... Nonetheless, this book seems to have almost no logical organization. Sometimes, when I'm reading a chapter, I'll feel like I'm reading something straight out of the last chapter. Not to mention the hierarchy within a chapter is chaotic at best. The use of the same size, same bold font for every heading makes it feel more like a poorly made wikipedia page on the topic than a logical chapter presenting the information. For god's sakes, change the font to reflect the hierarchy of the chapter. I've never seen a textbook fail to do so so miserably.

On top of this, it often feels like the authors just "threw" as much information in on a given topic as they could. Reading the little bullet points every few pages seems to almost conflict with some of the things mentioned in the book.

All in all, this is a VERY frustrating book to read and if you aren't somewhat interested in the topic already, it will not be an easy read. I have never used a worse textbook in my studies and I am in my second year of university, having taken psychology and exercise physiology courses with a lot in common with the course I use this for now.

If there's a way to avoid using this book (note to professors), please spare your class. You might understand it fairly well but students with less knowledge in the field will find it ridiculously boring and overwhelming.
