Great Book!
Bought this book for an Abnormal Psych class and it's awesome! Doesn't feel like reading a textbook; the authors give a very in-depth description of each case (Symptoms, Social History, Diagnosis, Treatment, Discussion, etc) and explain each section in a way that is clear and easy to read. Most Interesting School Book I've Ever Read
This book was the required text for a class I was taking in grad school and it was seriously the most interesting book I've ever read. I can honestly say I read every page. If this is an assigned book for your class be thankful because I think this is as good as it gets in terms of textbooks. Also since it wasn't a hardback it was easy to throw in my gym bag and take to the beach.

Excellent Resource
I am about half way done with it, but so far this book has taught me a few insights that have directly scored me sales where I would not have.I have worked in sales for the last 7 years, and even the most experienced sales people I know can benefit from this book.It is amazing, I know and understand many of the concepts that Tracy talks about in the book, however he gives some extremely valuable insights that shed some vibrant rays of light on the concepts that most sales people are familiar with to help the reader very easily increase their sales volume.I couldn't be happier with this book.

Solid Advice, Though Not Particularly Fresh
Unlike many of the marketing books that deal with specific techniques, The Psychology of Selling is interesting in that it highlights the seller's self-perception and state of mind.The author places an emphasis on improving self-esteem, and encourages salespeople to set personal goals in life to improve their problem solving in general.

When the author tackles the subject of why people buy a particular product, most of his points are marketing 101, but he effectively breaks down two major motivations that many sales books don't.He delves further into the psychology of buying with a point-by-point list of basic customer needs, and how you can appeal to them.The book carefully explains how all purchases are ultimately made for an emotional reason, and that consumers simply find ways to justify their purchase with logic only after the sale.One technique I found particularly useful was how to ask a question that would help you determine a customer's "Hot Button" and use it to encourage a purchase.

While some of the techniques dealing with face-to-face meetings aren't addressed in other sales books, there are many tips that seem to be Sales 101.Granted somes salespeople may not maintain eye contact with clients, give firm handshakes, or focus on personal grooming, but some of his advice seems to be fairly common knowledge.That in particular is the only reason why I gave the book four stars instead of five, but the book in otherwise should on the shelf of anyone involved in advertising as well as sales.

I have to admit, being familiar with Brian and his work, in particular, Brian book ADVANCED SELLING STRATEGIES that when I first saw this book I was a little dissappointed. I thought it was too small. The fact is that this book is along with Brians followup, "The Art of Closing The Sales" the same information as Brian Tracy's multi million dollar best selling audio program "The Psychology of Selling" and Brian's seminar of the same name which many have paid up to $5,000 to attend. It is very powerful information.

I also have to admit that when it comes to sales training, my personal favorite is Tom Hopkins with Brian Tracy right behind. Why listen to both? Because I have always believed that you should get training from various qualified sources. Another one of my favorite trainers is James E. Rohn. Mr. Rohn advises to get advice from as many people as possible. When it comes to selling, I am looking for maximum effectiveness. Tracy and Hopkins have walked the walk, have both set sales records along with being great trainers.

Tracy is more into the consultative approach although he uses some of the tried and proven closing techniques that sales professionals use. What impressed me about Tracy is that he speaks from experience having been selling since he was ten years old. He has taught more than 500,000 students in over 500 companies. Like Tom Hopkins, he has walked the walk, talks the talk and is one great trainer as well.

Using the combined advice of Tom Hopkins and Brian Tracy I was able to reach my monthly goal at my last job in only three days. The first time I used these techniques I moved from next to last place out of 71 sales reps to 3rd out of 75 reps in only one month generating up to $100,000 in sales volume in one month. This stuff works.

Right now I am using Brian's strategies in my network marketing company. They work very well.

That said, being familiar with Tracy in particular his tape series The Psychology of Selling, I was initially expecting much more in this book than what is offered. However, as stated above, that opinion has changed. Advanced Selling strategies which Tracy wrote over 14 years ago was a huge book, packed with information and had more than enough meat. I recommend th at you read this book first or along with Advanced Selling Strategies, followed by The Art of Closing The Sales.

Nonethless, The Psychology of Selling is a good book, a great primer for new sales people and a great refresher for experienced sales people as well. If you buy this, you will want to add the tape program as well or Advanced Selling Strategies. I also recommend Brians video programs "How To Sell Well" and 24 ways to close the same.

Finally, to do well in sales, you must not only have the right techniques but you must alsobelieve wholeheartily in your product or service, and the company you represent and perhaps most importantly, sincerely want to impact the lives of other people. Kudos from a Chakra Author
I have written a book and teach classes on the chakras and have found the exercises in this book to be very useful in helping my students move through places of stuck energy in the body. The book works with the meridians, but the meridians do go through the chakras. Opening any parts of our energy systems helps to open other parts of it. I bring this book to my classes and recommend it to my students. The exercises in the "Circuits of Joy" chapter are very easy and effective for feeling more connected in the body and releasing emotional pain to feel lighter and more joyful. Great exercises for depression. The descriptions and diagrams are clear and easy to understand. Tapping is also a well-proven technique for releasing emotional trauma and self-limitations. It is used by therapists of various modalities, and is taught in this book. I thought I had lost my copy, and ordered a second one. I found the first one and gave the new one to my daughter, who is a counselor. She also likes it very much. This, and "Energy Medicine" by Donna Eden, are two books I would not be without...Marcia Phillips, author of "Seven Portals To Your Soul: An Accessible Guide for Mending Your Life".

Lack of science, lots of snake oil
Question:Where are the results of the peer-reviewed, randomized, controlled, double-blind studies?

Answer:There aren't any!!

This book is the equivalent of getting the cart before the horse.If it's so effective, then let's have the scientific evidence that shows its efficacy.Most books written by psychologists are written on the basis of the result of years of scientific research that use accepted research methods.This book is written on the "promise" of studies that might be done "someday" and nothing but excuses for why there are yet to be any proper studies.Sorry, but I don't have time or money to waste on "promises" as there are many, many promises that never come to fruition.At this point, this promise isn't science.It's snake oil.The funniest part is a pilot study would be sooooo simple to conduct, which would then either make way for more research or lay the matter to rest, if only there were a scientist in the room!

Think Smarter about the World
The concepts in this book should be required understanding in all introductory science classes. The book explains how to think scientifically, so they don't develop false beliefs about the natural world and behavior. In today's world, our science classes teach students facts about the world but don't give them the tools to figure out what to believe and what not to outside the classroom.

How do we recognize pseudoscientific claims? Clinical Psychologist Scott Lilienfield (2005, p. 40) lists:

* The claim is unfalsifiable. There are no control standards and every outcome can be explained after the fact.
* An emphasis on confirmation rather than refutation
* Place the burden of proof on the buyer rather than the maker of the claim
* Excessive reliance on anecdotal and testimonial evidence to substantiate claims
* Evasion of scientific peer review
* Failure to build on existing scientific knowledge (lack of connectivity)
The book tackles all these issues, as well as chance, multiple causation, probabilistic reasoning, artificial settings for experimentation, and correlation and causation. Stanovich develops the book extremely well, with hundreds of references and powerful statistics as he tackles some of the most prominent pseudoscience of our day. He gives countless examples, including facilitated communication (where an aide supposedly could help autistic children communicate and became such a fad in the 90's that many parents went to jail on the sexual abuse charges that "came out"), infomercials with celebrity endorsements but no scientific success, miracle pills, esp, and much of popular "psychology".

This book gives you the tools to understand scientific claims. It's extremely powerful and only 200 pages. When you understand the tools to evaluate if something sounds to good to be true, you'll become a much more informed citizen.

It was a necessary book for the statistics class, I found the
class very stressfull and that may explain why I'm not so warmed
up to the book.I thought a lot of things could have been simplified

Thinking Straight About Psychology (8th ed.)
This book was a very interesting read. The author explained concepts well and related many concepts to research in order for the reader to better understand the material. Anyone interested in understanding why psychology is misunderstood may enjoy reading this book.

Scientific rundown on decision making in lay terms
Making the right decisions is seldom easy. Situations change and choices confound. Faulty perceptions and biases can block clear thinking and undermine the ability to weigh alternatives rationally. As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo explained 90 years ago, "We may try to see things as objectively as we please. Nonetheless, we can never see them with any eyes except our own." This is the vexing paradox involved in making decisions: People who are in the process of deciding cannot always trust their own perceptions and thought processes. Psychologist Scott Plous, winner of numerous awards and honors, examines decision making in this rigorously scientific yet mostly accessible book, itself an award winner. getAbstract believes it will interest decision analysts, researchers, psychologists and strategists, as well as readers who want to know why they may make poor decisions and how to make better ones.

Are we rational decision makers?
First we need to define what we understand under rational. Initially, researchers measured human rationality by analyzing the degree of "maximization" of utility (net wealth) of their decisions. Using this approach, we seemed not too "rational". Then they came up with a value function, defined in terms of gains and losses as deviations from a reference point and which incorporates decreasing returns. (For a deeper explanation read Origin of Wealth: Evolution, Complexity, and the Radical Remaking of Economics). This curve makes the loss segment steeper than the profit segment ("S-shaped curve"). When measured against this function we seemed a bit more rational. For me, this should come as no surprise since decision making was probably a bit more oriented at preserving our lives and escaping dangers (loss part of the function) than at obtaining food. It would not be too useful to be the best food gatherer if you succumbed to your enemies at the first opportunity. (This is probably my first "hindsight bias", which means that after knowing the outcome of a study, we tend to say that we knew it from the beginning).

Apparently we tend to "satisfice" not "optimize", which for me is obvious (second hindsight bias) and I will try to explain why: In several of the examples, in order to "maximize" value, you need to multiply one probability with one or several others to obtain the "combined probability result" of two or more events happening one after the other. In other problems, you need to add up the individual probabilities in order to obtain the probability of one or the other event happening. Assuming that you knew how to state the problem in terms of probabilities and the rules to calculate them, you would still need to actually perform the calculations (consciously or unconsciously) in order to take a decision. Many decisions need to be taken quickly and even if there is enough time, I do not think people usually do these calculations, so they probably rely on some sort of intuition (what the author calls heuristics or rules of thumb). These rules of thumb will depend on past experiences specially on those that are easily accesible to memory because they were frequent or recent or because they had a great emotional impact on us (positive or negative). If to "maximize value" we need to perform complex calculations, then I am sure we do not "maximize", we rather settle with a fairly good decision. Further, if we need to "maximize value" in order to be considered rational, then we are probably not rational.

It would have been interesting to know how people decide when previously given the calculated expected values of each choice (considering the probabilities). I think that "rationality" would increase a bit, but not significantly, since some people believe they can "outperform" the odds (by special luck), while others try to avoid undesirable risks, even if the probabilities are very low (specially if the impact of the risk is big).

The book explains thoroughly how we deviate from what would be "rational" decision making. Each of the 20 chapters presents research that exemplifies one or more biases like inconsistency, perception and memory biases, framing, intransitivity, neglecting base rates, attribution errors, social loafing, sunk costs and behavioral traps. It makes quite clear that we do not decide in a "rational" way, but it does not explain the actual process we use to make decisions. Additionally, the author shows that we are not good at probability and statistical analysis, but he does not explain the calculations we should have done were we "rational decision makers". (He could have included it in an Appendix). If you already know this kind of math or if you are not interested, then the book can be read without it. Finally and although the book is very interesting and full of insights, I need to say that I am glad that I bought a used one, since its price seems not too rational to me either.

A Wonderful Work
This work by Scott Plous should not be taken lightly. Dr. Plous, indeed, reviews the literature, but he also puts the missing pieces to the puzzle together as you try to understand how we got to the point we are today in the Psychology of judgment and decision making. Without this comprehensive review, it is hard to put other books in context. Many books explore specific persuasion principles and the psychological aspects of decision making. The problem is, how to you put all of the pieces together to make sense of it all. Plous gives the big picture so you will have a place from which to view all the other articles and books you read. I read this book four times and tried to pick apart each paragraph to see how it could apply to influencing others. I promise you the pearls are there if read each page with the goal of understanding how it can be applied in the real world. This book was my top 2 of all time!

I think it is probably the best book on decision-making psychology I read. This book is full of great insights and tipsinto the decision making. It gives a very well rounded overview of the many aspects of decision making: selective perception, memory, biases and heuristic, behavioral traps, etc. It is also one of the more easily read books on the very complex subject. It has a large number of relevant and easy to digest examples.

Liked it!
I must say, this Psychology textbook is very helpful and actually interesting. It isn't chock full of hard to understand definitions. Rather, the author explains all the concepts using simple ideas and relative examples, and incorporating many pictures and tables/graphs. The loose-leaf edition also makes life so much easier.

Best Pick for an introduction to the study of psychology
I teach an IB Psychology course and this is by far the best introduction to psychology text I have read and used in my course. Kalat does a fantastic job integrating current research into each major topic and even provides summaries of key studies providing their hypotheses, methods, results, and key points from their discussions. What's more, Kalat offers questions that stretch across Bloom's levels of questioning. Perhaps most importantly, my students love this book and read it with pleasure! And these are high school students!

Finally, unlike other detailed psychology texts, this text is very digestible! It is very well organized and structured. It includes clear diagrams and visuals that really help my students.Kalat's style of writing is not only enjoyable to me, but my students really enjoy it! It is very intelligent, but warm and friendly.

I HIGHLY recommend this book for any advanced psychology high school course or introduction to psychology course in college.

Out of date
This book was created in 2004 and the Praxis II School Psychology Exam was updated in 2008.I would not use this to study because it is out of date.Study from the Best Practices series and buy the downloadable ETS Guide. If you do some practice questions and review the matieral you are least familiar with, you will do fine.Study the ethics guidelines from NASP, their position statements, and the most important special education laws.You don't need this book.

I'm an Ed.S level school psychologist who has been practicing in public schools for three years now.I purchased this book when I took the Praxis for School Psychology in 2006.I'm not sure how the test may have changed since then, but this book was a quick and simple way to prepare for the Praxis.I've never been a big fan of big study prep books, especially for content areas.If you've taken two years of graduate courses to prepare for a career in school psychology and aren't ready for the Praxis, no book is going to change that for you now.What this book does well is outline the major areas covered on the Praxis, such as ethics and evaluation, so you can identify what areas might be particular areas of personal weakness which will allow you to target what areas you should be brushing up on.The sample test in the back was probably my favorite part of the book, as it allowed me to get an idea of what to expect as far as the style of questions on the Praxis, which is very helpful since there weren't very many study guides for the School Psychology Praxis exam when I took it.

Very Informative Guide
This book was very helpful in preparing for the Praxis II: School Psychology Test. It not only gave general studying guidelines, but also went through bullet points of all of the most important information to study for each section of the test. The only drawback is that it is a little dated since a new version of this test just came out last year. However, the test sections are similar enough that it still provides a very comprehensive overview of what you need to know. It also includes a practice test at the end!

My book took a journey
I was pretty unsatisfied with how long it took for my book to arrive. I ordered this book and another one on the same day. I had received my other book two days after ordering. It took two and a half weeks for my book to arrive and I really needed it for class which really upset me. When I received the book it was in pretty good condition. The description failed to mention that there was cover damage that was fixed with tape but overall the book was still in good condition.

McMinn's book was a relatively easy read with practical suggestions for the perspective Christian counselor. He makes good emphasis on the need for the counselor to personally possess Spiritual integrity and ethical practice. He gives good advice on integrating diverse Spiritual interventions in assisting the client.

Through illustrations and counseling session vignettes, McMinn (1996) provides an excellent working model of how to integrate psychology, theology and spirituality in his book of the same title.He begins the book with exploring the challenges which confronts the Christian counselor who is trying to integrate the science of psychology with the teachings of faith, all the while keeping both the professional and personal life of the counselor at the center of the discussion.McMinn stresses that what happens in the personal life of the counselor is just as important as what goes on behind the doors of the counselor's office.To help the reader understand how the counselor's worldview affects counseling style, McMinn uses vignettes he labels, "What if this happened?"Through these illustrations he is able to explore such issues as the need for a third discipline, namely, spiritual formation.Other challenges are discussed by McMinn as well.For example, he points out the need for a scientific basis, an ethical standard, and challenging the dominate models of mental health.
In the second chapter McMinn (1996) offers a more "detailed map" to reaching a healthy mental state (p. 44) in contrast with that of the scientific and theological models of psychology.He suggests that spiritual and psychological health go hand in hand and include a healthy sense of self, accurate awareness of need, and healing relationships.By incorporating all three disciplines, psychological, theological and spiritual formation, a more balanced model of psychological and spiritual healing is created.
The remainder of the book is dedicated to discussion on how and when a Christian counselor can utilize the basic tenants of faith in such a way that it promotes mental health in his/her clients.The first spiritual discipline McMinn (1996) examines is prayer.The author examines the psychological properties of prayer as a counseling technique, the types of prayer which may be utilized, and a discussion on when to use or not to use prayer with a client.He concludes that more research is needed on the uses of different types of prayer with clients but warns that although it is a fundamental discipline for the Christian, it is not always an appropriate technique in therapy.
The use of scripture is another discipline that McMinn (1996) warns is not always appropriate in the counseling session and this is evident as research indicates that few Christian counselors use this technique.Although McMinn points out that scripture is powerful and certainly has its place in some situations, he reminds the reader that real change takes place when the client can assimilate his counseling experiences outside the session and in his real life.Once again, McMinn warns that whatever the discipline of faith that is being used, it should be delivered with humility by a counselor who is living Christ-like in his/her personal life.
McMinn (1996) engages in a discussion regarding the relationship between sin, confession, and forgiveness in the next three chapters of this book.First dealing with the concept of sin and the importance in understanding sin from a theological perspective, McMinn then discusses how a counselor can address sin with humility bringing the client to a point of accepting forgiveness.Regarding the subject of forgiveness, McMinn considers the current popular attitudes regarding the role of forgiveness and the corresponding research available.Forgiveness as a Christian duty is examined as well as how one can best assist the client in maturing spiritual to be in a better position to accomplish forgiveness.In conclusion, McMinn touches on the subject of redemption as a worldview.He provides examples of how a redemptive relationship can be established within different models of therapy such as object relations, cognitive, and Adlerian.

A review and reflection

This book was written to answer an important question to many people that are in the field of counseling and some that are not.That question is
"how does a counselor integrate their faith in the therapy session, a faith that includes psychology and theology?"Many people struggle with this very question.We live in a world that is seemingly growing toward a "don't bring Christ into this" mentality because we are afraid we might offend someone.Some Counselors want to help people and they know that Christ can help, yet do not know how to incorporate that into their counseling methods or approaches.These are the things that McMinn tries to address.He does this in practical ways using the spiritual disciplines, counseling examples and scripture.

McMinn also explains the definitions, similarities, and differences between Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality. He writes in away that breaks down the terms and issues in away for the reader to understand and apply.The book is written for anyone who wishes to understand how they can truly integrate these three concepts into the therapy session. This book excels at helping the reader integrate spiritual disciplines that we as Christians should live by into the counseling session and also encourages the counselor if they are not incorporating these disciplines in their walk with the Lord, to do so.

This book really seeks to teach the counselor to multitask in the three categories of Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality.He suggest that the counselor who can learn to do this effectively will be able to give their clients the very best. This is not an easy task for any Christian Counselor however, it can and will be rewarding for both the counselor and the counselee.

Concrete Response

I think the book relates to my personal life and ministry the most in the section of dealing with sin in the therapy sessions.McMinn States "In Christian counseling, sin can be confronted in humble and empathic ways that encourage spiritual growth more than guilt and shame. These methods include silence at strategic moments, pondering aloud inconsistencies in client's narratives, and questioning clients in order to understand their values of right and wrong." (McMinn, 1996, p. 162)Because I work with teenagers, I have come to learn that a strategic silence is one of my biggest "tools".Most teenagers know what they are doing is wrong, or they know I will disapprove of what they are doing. Then that follows what McMinn talks about in understanding their values and understanding of sin.In reading this, I was reminded of one of the most intimidating and scary confrontations I had to deal with two teenagers.Walking into meet with two teenagers separately about sexual activity in the church, well let's say that moment of strategic silence, questioning, and value system came into play.After long discussions, crying, prayer and the initial "I can't believe my youth ministers know I done this" reaction, I was able to understand how their family values corresponded with their actions.Needless to say when I read this in this book, it was great to see that how I handled it was actually an okay, or good approach.

Reflection

This is a good book for anyone who wants to learn more on how into integrate their faith and psychology together.I enjoy how McMinn uses the spiritual disciplines as stepping stones in the incorporating of a counselor's spirituality into the therapy session.In the section on prayer he does a great job of introducing prayer into the therapy sessions.Prayer is an important part to the Christian's life, and cannot be left out in the therapy session.

The only question that I have is in the sections dealing with sin.The author gives five approaches to confronting a client's sins they are "silence, pondering, questioning, direct censure, and not confronting the sin." (McMinn, 1996, pg.137). I am not sure I completely agree with the last approach of not confronting sin.I believe that we must be looking at our own lives first, second we must have the right attitude and motive of confronting sin, but we must as Christians hold each other accountable. I work with students and I deal with confronting their sins, and dealing with their problems on what seems a daily basis, however I am still learning about dealing with sin in the counseling sessions, but I do not think that you can ignore sin completely in the therapy session.

Action

This book does a great job at showing not only how to integrate psychology, theology and spirituality into the counseling sessions, but the need to do so for the Christian counselors.I would recommend this book for anyone who is going into the field of counseling, and I would also tell people of the truths in this book. Christians are called to be set apart, and to be salt and light in the world in which they live.That means that Christ must be at the heart of everything a Christian counselor does and says.In the dual role of both a Christian and a counselor this is more evident than ever.This writer believes that being a counselor is a high calling from the Lord just as any other profession including the call to ministry, and that He has invited us to partner with Him in the soul care and healing of a broken world.For Christian counselors, Christ and the teaching of scripture must be at the heart and foundation of every session.It is with the guiding of the Holy Spirit and the healing power of Christ, that we partner with modern technology, medicine and psychology to help people heal and have a healthier and fuller life. Also, as McMinn points out in his section on prayer, that prayer is communication with God and it is the "Holy Spirit who heals." (McMinn, 1996, p. 69)

Christian's posses something that no one else has and it is the power of Christ. He can make things happen in us that we cannot do by ourselves.Titus 3:5-6 states "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal of by the Holy Spirit, who he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior."

Great book
I compared this textbook to what the rest of the class had, which is the edition stated on the sylabus. Even though this book is an older edition of what I was supposed to have for class, I found it to be very accurate. The only real difference was older diagrams, which still basically showed the same thing, and obviously the pages were off. The important thing was that the material was exactly the same.

Wonderful intro to psychology
I bought this book for an introductory psychology class at Harvard, taught by one of the book's authors. The book does an excellent job of explaining pyschological concepts, detailing the progress of psychological science, and relating material to useful, real-world examples. It even keeps up an interesting, sometimes sarcastic sense of humor. Perhaps its best aspect is its organization: rather than fall into the trap of historical progression (William James believed... but Freud said... and Maslow theorized...) that ensnares many intro psychology books, this one is organized thematically and works exceptionally well. The history is still there, but it doesn't overshadow our present knowledge of psychology. Overall, excellent textbook.

Good Book for Intro Class
I've used Myers textbooks for 2 years now (Ed. 7 for AP Psych in High School, and this edition for Psych 1 in college). Myers produces all of the necessary information for studying the course in nice, easy-to-navigate through sections (entitled "modules"). It's a great textbook for an intro Psych class, and makes a great study tool with questions that pertain to each section. Myers writes in a scientific and psychological perspective, but somehow manages to do it without making it too dry by throwing in real world examples and case studies. So overall, this is a great textbook for a starter class. I highly recommend it... (not that I can choose what textbook your professor selects!)

Also, make sure you get the hardbound version. The paperback version that I received in high school took a beating and the value went down so much that I had to pay for damages >_<.

A very basic primer on practicing criminal psych
When I bought this book, I thought I would be getting a basic breakdown of different types of offender behavior and the more prevalent psychiatric issues that one would see in the criminal psych field, with occasional views of how a variety of socio-economic factors influence the different types of crinimal behavior in the US. That's not the main purpose of this book. This book is primarily written for a UK audience (with brief references in every segment on how the subject is studied or researched in the US). The main purpose is to look at the many different types of work that criminal psychologists do and the environments in which they work; this book does a very good job of examining that. For those looking to enter into the criminal psych field, this would be very helpful. There are some portions that do look at offender behavior, but they are mostly high-level macro views of offender behavior without any in-depth examinations of "what makes the offender tick" (more along the lines of "what types of punishment are out there? Why? Do they really work?"). If you're looking for a book that's more focused on the psychology of offender behavior, this is not the best book for you.

A map for the expanse of the Human being
True to the word integral Wilber has done much for bringing together multiple frames to present a more cohesive picture of human beings. Integral Thinking is a must for any practising professional in mental health or helping professions. It allows a way of understanding the context and facets of mental health and wellbeing. It allows a practioner to work with an understanding of surrounding professions and their contribution to treatment.

Integral Psychology
Integral Psychology is a must have text that examines the history and most pertinent philosophies of psychology over the years. The book begins with a brief history of psychology. Like every social science, from the beginning psychology has been both criticized and praised for its non-scientific foundation. In this way, early on, theorists searched for an appropriate model of consciousness that could provide some aspect of scientific control. Integral Psychology looks at the various models and popular theories from the pre-modern to post-modern eras. Of course, the icing on the cake is the author's own models based upon integral theory.

Integral Psychology is detailed enough to be the main text for any psychological theory course or as a graduate introduction to integral theory, whether for psychological or ecological purposes. It is a book that should be on the shelves of educators and professionals alike.

An integral approach to psychology
This was a very interesting read, which examined the varying theories of psychology and focused on integrating those theories together and then providing an overarching theory that they could fit into, supplied by Wilbur. The author is clearly very well studied in what he discusses and provides some detailed explanations that provide a successful argument for what he's attempting to do. This can be a dense read and jargon heave, especially with some of the words the author has come up with on his own, but don't let that discourage you. I see this work as an essential read for occultists, a way of expanding their understanding and application of psychology to their own practices. The charts at the end of the book are helpful for illustrating what Wilbur is explaining. My only wish is that he could've integrated the charts more into the book, instead of at the back.

The unveiling of the structures of consciousness
This book is excellent resource for anyone attempting to find a way through the postmodern miasma of conflicting, if not antagonistic, myriad of possible world views and perspectives.

Wilber's integral methodological pluralism asserts that it is statistically impossible for anyone to be totally wrong.Everyone is at least partially correct. By integrating many points of view it is possible to be less wrong.

It is a scholoarly and uncommonly luminous contibution to the usually less generous landscape of the behavioral sciences.

Ego Indoctrination Re-Evaluated
I read this book recently after having completed my prerequisite respective courses for a masters in Transpersonal Studies because it further defined the true potential in store for me as a sojourner through time and space. In lieu of change throughout childhood, adolescence and young adulthood, one element in each of the factes of my personality is perseverence; my EHE as learned through applying the teachings of a perennial philosophy, is truly an 'exceptional human experience' I embrace and honor. Every single thought, action, reaction is a legitimate aspect of my consciousness that which I think is me !

It was fascinating that what I used through clairvoyance, Ken Wilber clearly defined as a 'higher intellectual thinking foundation called, 'vision-logic'. His exciting example is not just seeing each individual tree (good for those trying to hone and develop their attention to detail skills) but the entire forest each tree single-handedly contributes to its special thrivelihood !

In discussing the exceptional human experience from my own sandbox, I found simple attributes, means of affection, and calmness both verbal and physical excites my ego more than ever; while the more complex material of my personna ignites my soul. With the functions of consciousness well understood by someone who studied them, journaled them, battled with them and eventually changed them after his wife passed, Wilber teaches his readers to act, desire, perceive and will yourself to anything and everything.

I was disciplined religiously in the organized fashion handed down by generation to generation of church-attendees, my family was devout, until me. But resigning myself to the confines of organized religion was not my choice, it was an expectation. One day, I could not stand the weight of the mask I was wearing long into teenage years, it struck my innocence and I condemned my own church, the existence of god and hated that grandma was not here with me anymore.

I had been hiding my true spiritual connection because I was looking for acceptance from all, as LEO children generally aspire to, and beginning around the age of seven when I was taught in Sunday school the basic rules to reach our heavenly father, I was questioning-- Why ? the demand for masculinity in the divine sense, Why ? the limitations as to where I can receive sacraments, Why ? the restrictions on bliss, livelihood, atonement, Why? the orders, Why? the chaos if we sense things not of the bible, speak of things not of a religious paradigm, step outside of the box, oh no . . . and Why? the spiritual distance I was feeling in the abandonment of my own transpersonal development?

It was based on the normal state of consciousness such as waking thought, dreaming thought, and sleeping 'new life?' yet my pastor was not prepared for apparition questions, suicidal ideations, spirit-energy-manifestations or the idea that heaven and hell were concepts not actual places. C'mon were you there . . . R u there now telling me of this? He wasn't but grandma, well lets just say she gives me encouragement to use an 'altered state of consciousness' such as meditation and fasting (both Wilber classifies as nonordinary state of consciousness) as avenues to self improvement.

My modes which Ken Wilber defines as either aesthetic, moral or scientific collide erratically with one another often confusing the very basis of my existence. It is in the EHE I was asked to pen back in 2003, that I seeded a fantabulous jorney in which I was my own leader. I was using integral psychology and did not realize the value nor the application process in motion from an outsider-looking-in, but lived it vicariously through a more refined Self.

This book will help you locate, re-evaluate what the ego has limited the spirit too; while holding down the soul that is meant to love vicariously through the body using all states of consciousness. Discover your two selves and challenge them into a groundeded understanding of the 3, 5, 7 or even 108 subdivisions of structures of consciousness and the modes that we compartmentalize them in. Remember if these change constantly, so should our constructs and holding onto negative patterns definitely keep us behind the movement not ahead of it.

So flow do not resist and stay consistent with that which brings you further forward into enlightenment than the last step, the aha-moments are so delightful when realized as I perused satisfied from beginning to end of this incredible mind journey . . .

this textbook is very convenient due to its small size and detailed information, it gives many actual case descriptions and examples. it is very research based and the information is very detailed and easy to understand, it does not have many tables and graphs for visual stumulation, i wish it did because then it would be a 5 star vote from me, but apart from this informality it is an excellent and informative learning and teaching device, especially after taking into consideration the degree of the subject itself. those of you who are required by your prefessors to purchase this book, as was i, you will not be dissatisfied in any way, shape or form. good luck and all the best wishes from me.

Excellent Example-Driven Approach
I have taught experimental psychology and research methods for twelve years and I have used this book several times for experimental psych. The presentation is to-the-point and reasonably thorough. The highlight is the section of 16 published empirical papers, some of which are annotated, some of which aren't, thus presenting students with the opportunity to do their own evaluations. I think that the ability to base lectures and concepts on actual research papers is paramount for student understanding. I recommend the book highly.

I believe that Chakra88 was misusing the book by looking for information on APA style. The source for that is the APA Publication manual (which I also require my students to purchase). True, some of the APA format information in the textbook is out of date, but that is not its purpose. Its purpose is to teach experimental thinking and it does an excellent job of that.

Worthless
This is a worthless book.The examples do not coincide at all with the APA manual.Writing examples are not detailed or helpful.I had to consult three different manuals just to put together the proper APA format for a research proposal!This book is only good for giving a rough, rudimentary explanation of experimental psychology.If you want details on how to actually conduct research, go somewhere else to find it.

Hands-on and concise; brilliant
I've taught experimental psychology many times with many different books. This book, however, is my favorite because it focuses on work as done by practicing researchers. The content is well-thought out and is short enoughto not overwhelm the students. The two chapters of design critiques areexcellent assignments in critical thinking. Most of all, the reproduced andannotated research articles are a gift. APA style is hard for students tounderstand, so the expository style helps tremendously.
