5-0 out of 5 stars Marcus creates a great collection of readings!
This book is great--I have to read certain selections for my Psych100 class and they are always interesting and exciting. It is great to have a compilation of literature from many famous psychologists. A must read for any psychology student or psych enthusiast!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book in a great trilogy !
After having read Gary Marcus' 'The Birth of the Mind' (dont miss it!) and having translated into italian his amazing 'Kluge: the Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind' (on print soon even in Italy) I can consider myself a real 'supporter' of this talented writer and insightful psychology professor. My opinion of him is so biased and I am so addicted to his work that I couldnt stop with those two and ordered'The Norton Psychology Reader', which collects some of my favourite authors: Pinker, Sacks, Chomsky, Goleman, Csikszentmihalyi, LeDoux - and lots of other talented scientist Im now happily getting to know. All of them contribute to make this book a chest overflowing with modern psychology jewels, a companion on the way to the understanding of the mind, a compendium tracing a lay scientific way to enlightenment! Wanna make the trilogy complete? After 'The Birth of the Mind' and 'Kluge', get this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's like the Cliff Notes of great Psychology writings!
This book provides a fabulous overview of some of psychology's greatest works - chapter-long excerpts from renowned psychologists like James, Freud, Pinker, Chomsky and so many more.A great way to get a feel for some of these original works (without getting bogged down with pages and pages of over-technical psycho-babble).Great for the undergraduate psychology student. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook
This is a great textbook. I have passed every test and it is because of the way this textbook breaks down what it is advocating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This book is EXTREMELY helpful. I used the quizzes at the end of each chapter and I felt that it was a great way to review what I read. It also had a list of important words from each chapter (with pages numbers so they were even easier to find) and I made flash cards out of those, there was also a summary of the chapter and I believe it helped me prepare for my midterms. The book is an easy read, not complicated or dense -- full of interesting information. Unfortunately I had to return this book because I found another one for a cheaper price. I paid about $135 for this one and I bought another for $36 (both prices include shipping and handling). I did not realize the other was a different edition until I received it and wished I did not return this book. But it was too late, I got my money back and such, in other words--this book is worth it and amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent condition and shipping
I needed this textbook for my PSY 103 class, and I am glad I purchased it through Amazon because I saved about 30 bucks, even though it was a brand-new edition (2010) and there were no used copies. It shipped fast, and it was in beautiful condition.I will definitely order books through Amazon next semester!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
I purchased this book for my daughter for her AP Psychology class. It was substantially less than new and was in like new condition!I can't comment on the content as I haven't read it, but externally it was perfect! It was a required text so I'm assuming the book itself is also a good one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait, let me read that again...
This book is sloppily written which makes it difficult to read.Often sentences are circumlocutious and contain awkward phrases. Also the book is full of little mistakes like "Boys are more likely than boys to engage in rough-and-tumble play" (338).Whatever. ... Read more

Not only has Steenbarger provided some fantastic tools for the trader to transform his mindset, but he has contributed unique trading ideas as well. Brilliant!"
–Linda Raschke, President, LBRGroup, Inc.

"‘Investigate, before you invest’ was for many years the slogan of the New York Stock Exchange. I always thought a better one would be, ‘Investigate YOURSELF, before you invest.’ The Psychology of Trading should help you increase your annual investment rate of return. Mandatory reading for anyone intending to earn a livelihood through trading. "

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best trading books I have ever read.
I have traded for about 9 years and of the trading books I have read, this one and "The Daily Trading Coach" are the best. A good part of trading successfully is about over coming your subconscious trader and trading with your concious mind.Since following the recommendations in this book and Bret Steenbarger's other book "The Daily Trading Coach" my profits have increased quite a bit.He tells you about the usual things all traders should know about managing loss and staying in a play until it hits your target, then he goes deeper. He asks you to look at how you may be acting out disfunctional behaviors in placing trades. He gives you ways to recognize and short circuit those tendencies. He also has a website with volumes of blogs concerning trading that provide a look into the real trading world. He says there usually is more than one trader in each of us and we need to learn to recoginze which one is making the trades.

I have studied psychology as a hobbie for 35 years and I know what Bret is talking about. If this idea backs you up, you probably need to read his books and if you understand that you are many times making decisions with your subconscious mind, then you also know you need to read these books. He is speaking from a day trading perspective but the information applies to any kind of trading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on trading psychology, but not that easy
This book is really good, if you are looking for information on the psychology of trading. I especially liked the author his trading experiences and the way he looks back on those experiences. The stories of his clients, and how they dealt with their problems was also insightfull. Another good point were the links to the academical psychology researches and their findings.

I do think a lot of people who have never red a book on psychology before this one, will have difficulties with some of the material. I've studied economics at grad school and we've seen some psychology courses. They certainly were helpful in understanding this book. I do think the author could have prevented this from happening, but perhaps he simply was not aware of this.

I'm also goind to read this author his other books.

Conclusion: Add this book to your trading library. It's one of the better ones out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for an active trader
I highly recommend this book for any trader seeking to profit in the market. Dr. Steenbarger is a master of distilling practical advice into "readable" terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that every trader (pro and/or amateur) must read.
I was introduced to Dr. Steenbarger's work with this book and I love what he does.
This book is the foundation how his work and his book is very well written, an eye opener and has lot of practical implications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Good Insight
This book is really good insight on not just trading, but also about human thinking and behavior.
For those who expect the author to do the work for you and pretty much tell you when to trade, don't get the book.
This author give you the tools to work on yourself as a trader and to understand other people. Excellent book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Includes some useful information
NOTE:I received a free review copy of this book directly from one of the authors.

I was a little hesitant to read this book, as I am not a big fan of the "For Dummies" line; although I think that these books often do contain useful information, I find the way the books are organized to be distracting and somewhat juvenile.Still, since I am a psychologist who works with college students, I thought that SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY FOR DUMMIES might be a useful addition to our self-help lending library, particularly for our student athletes.

Overall, I DID find this book to contain some helpful information.I thought that Part I, which covered Sports Psychology Fundamentals, was especially beneficial, as it did a nice job of addressing issues such as confidence, motivation, and goal-setting.In Part II, the authors begin to focus more on specific tools for success ("Your Mental Toolkit"), and here I particularly liked their review of self-talk.Unfortunately, this second section seemed relatively short compared to the following one, "Staying Competitive: Sports Psychology in Action," which I found to be rather repetitive.

For the last three sections of the book, it seemed that the authors were too broad in what they were trying to accomplish.First, they expand the Sports Psychology concepts to team building; there is some good information here, but I am not sure that it would be relevant to an individual reading the book for self-help.Part V is entitled "Sports Psychology for Coaches and Parents."Again, the actual content provided here is quite good, but it feels like it belongs it its own separate book.In the the final segment, "The Part of Tens," the authors offer various suggestions on the topics "Ten Ways You Can Use Sports Psychology at the Office," "Ten Ways to Be a Better Competitor," "Ten Ways to Manage Stress Better," and "Ten Ways to Parent an Athlete."To me, this section would have made more sense if it were narrower in scope (i.e., removing the office chapter), and perhaps if it included the remaining information more briefly in an Appendix.

In conclusion, this book is likely to provide athletes with some useful information on topics relevant to their sports participation, and they may learn some beneficial new coping techniques which will assist in enhancing their performance. However, I would rate this book as only average, and I would recommend it with the caution that some portions might not be relevant to all readers.[Furthermore, as one other reviewer mentioned, I would note that this field, as officially designated by the American Psychological Association, is "Sport" Psychology--not "Sports" Psychology; this is a rather odd and somewhat disconcerting error for the authors to have made.]

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for dummies
I received this book as a review copy. I was delighted because I am fascinated by athletes and their motivation. How do the pros look so calm before a game? Why do some basketball players get so emotional that they actually hurt their team by getting technical fouls called against them? What makes a football player go out there and get hit - and enjoy the experience?

This book held some of the answers. However, the title really ought to be "How to Stay Motivated As An Athlete." Much of the content seems directed to younger players, which makes sense: a college or pro athlete will have mastered the techniques and/or have access to a trained psychologist who focuses on his or her unique challenges.

I'd recommend this book to adults who are not athletes but who work for themselves or for corporations. The tips on imagery, getting out of a slump and developing "winning" habits are surprisingly useful outside the context of sports. The section on self-talk is not especially new but presents valuable information unusually well.

I'm not sure who would benefit from the sections on coaching; I would hope that any coach would have some training before accepting the job. The section on parenting may be helpful but I wonder if a parent would actually pick up this book.

The book's title suggests that the book would give some hint of the theories of sport psychology and/or psychological theories that form the foundation of sports psychology. I also would have liked to see more examples from real sports figures. Of course much of that info is confidential, but many stories are reported in the press. Some comments like, "I suspect X's coach would..."As it happens, the NY Times for October 10, 2010, included a sports section story about a football punter who had been advised to work with a psychologist, and there was a brief mention of what the psychologist did. Pat Summitt also talks about team psychologists in her books about coaching the Lady Vols.

Last but not least, I liked the discussion of becoming a sports psychologist. This section could have been expanded with examples of the many things a sports psychologist can do, ranging from working with athletes on personal problems to traveling with a team to helping a coach resolve team conflicts. Alas, the authors warn us, it's not a glamor job. You have to stay on the sidelines. That's probably true but I bet it's also a lot of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great applications in business/career settings!
Thank you, Drs Smith and Kays, for an extremely helpful, succinct, and accessible tool for the workplace. As a manager in a fast paced, exacting, and stressful environment, chapter 19 (Ten Ways You Can Use Sports Psychology at the Office) was very useful to me. Performing under pressure, coping with conflict, and enlisting a support team are daily challenges. Thank you for being honest about what it is really like in the corporate world and giving those of us who struggle to make it all happen some tools to succeed and take care of ourselves in the process. Also, my boss was a football player and sports fanatic, and reading this book helped me understand him better and make more sense of the "sports worldview" he applies to every situation. Thanks again, guys, and keep up the good work! I look forward to reading more of your books in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Invaluable Resource for Anyone!
Not being a collegiate or professional athlete, I was a little skeptical about purchasing this book. It was after a recent conversation with a friend about my current struggles with my weight loss, that this book was highly recommended to me. "Sports Psychology for Dummies" taught me a lot about goal setting, motivation and even how to handle, what would have been before, devastating set backs. All while keeping my perspective on my overall goal. I have been implementing the techniques that Dr. Smith and Dr. Kays have suggested in the book for over three weeks now and not only have I already seen a difference in my body, but also in my overall mental attitude! "Sport Psychology for Dummies" is not just a GREAT resource for athletes, parents of athletes or coaches, but also a valuable tool for people like me: The everyday person who is looking to improve themselves both physically and mentally. Thank you Dr. Smith and Dr. Kays!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for any performer.
This book is a great resource for athletes, coaches, and parents of athletes, but the information is also useful to performers from any discipline. The techniques presented are focused on optimizing the mental skills and mindset needed for consistent high-level performance, useful to those in the performing arts, music, etc. Anyone desiring to increase confidence and consistently perform at peak levels will find this book invaluable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Emotion counts!
It's hard to believe that emotion can have such a huge role in back pain, when we usually attribute it to physical causes - but this book makes it easy to apply EFT in ways that get to the core of the pain. I find I'm using the techniques on other 'painful' areas of my life too, with great results. Being a do-it-yourself sort of person, I love EFT and I'm finding this book is extending my skills and effectiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars EFT for Back Pain -- a wonderfully helpful book
Gary Craig's book EFT for Back Pain more than lives up to its description.I have shared several ideas from the book with others, and they were inspired to buy the book themselves. I am using quite a few suggestions, and I very seldom experience back pain any more. Before using the suggestions, I had quite a lot of lower back pain and I took pain pills. Now I can keep going on various projects without experiencing any pain. It's wonderful to be pain free.

5-0 out of 5 stars EFT For Back Pain
My sister swears by EFT.I have not used it too much yet but feel it does contain important information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as everything from Gary Craig
This little book is just excellent. Not a single word too much. I know all the EFT teaching DVDs from Gary and am very impressed by this material, his way of teaching and the compassionate, clear and humourous way of treating with EFT on a high standard. The healings a striking. Being a professional I highly recommend his book about backpain both for clients and for professionals. It illustrates the different backgrounds of backpains and why they might stay for a long time. The best of all: The healing results are often very quick, profound and lasting once you discovered the source.
I appreciate the fact that Gary writes about different special subjects as back pain.

EFT is easy to do, easy to understand and yet there is so much to discover about our emotions, thoughtforms, "writings on the walls", unconscious influences on our (poor) body which has to go with whatever we think and feel...

I hope to see more of these little wonderful books! I like his way of writing and putting his profound experience and open mindedness into words. Just well done! Thank you, Gary.

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (1/09)

I have just spent the last five months of my life recovering from a back injury caused by a car accident. The pain was so excruciating; I've lost 31 pounds.Prior to the accident, I was very active, belonging to two gyms; I would exercise from one to three times a day. Now, I feel like a shell of myself, and am still having pain while undergoing rounds of painful epidural injections.

I was so excited to have the opportunity to read "EFT for Back Pain," that I did it in one sitting.I am not supposed to sit for more than 20 minutes at a time, so I broke the rules for this one.I have to say that it was well worth it.I am so excited and finally have hope that I will be able to fully escape the pain.Gary Craig offers steps for a Quick Start method early in the book. I am glad that he did this, because it allowed me to sample this type of treatment.I immediately saw some improvement with pain reduction.

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques.Craig states "the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."EFT techniques can free you from back pain, and other ailments, while at the same time help you heal emotionally. This will enable us all to have a better quality of life.He reports that 80% of cases find relief - 80% is a very significant number to me, especially if I can represent one of those percents!

EFT is also referred to as Emotional Acupuncture.Key acupuncture points are used, with tapping techniques rather than needles. That sounds wonderful to me!EFT is unique in that it addresses the causes, not the symptoms.Using these techniques can eliminate the need for drugs or other medical interventions, which from my personal experience can be very painful. It also can be used to help heal other ailments.

Even though I haven't gone further than the Quick Start yet, I really gained a lot of personal insight into how my emotions can be contributing to my pain, and how I might also sabotage myself with negative thoughts. While I read the case examples and the affirmation examples, the insight I gained was very healing.Even though I wasn't doing the tapping techniques, as I was reading, the phrases offered as examples were very healing to read when they applied to me.

Further information is available on the author's website. He includes a downloadable manual and information about accessing DVDs.I highly recommend "EFT for Back Pain" by Gary Craig to people who are suffering from either chronic or acute physical and or emotional pain.It can also be used by people who are living or working with others who fit into this category.

4-0 out of 5 stars Text Book
Sender was very prompt and kind, offered to overnight book due to scheduling conflicts. only problem was that after dropping book once on floor, cover fell off. However, still works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great transaction
The book was used when I bought it but in great shape and I received it before it was due. Super all around!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read
I am currently using this book for a course on psychological disorders of childhood. If you want to save $100+ by purchasing the third edition vs. the fourth edition... go for it!Hardly any changes have been made between the two editions. It's an interesting read - boring at times, but overall, it keeps my attention. They're short chapters (30-40 pages each), but they're full of information.

4-0 out of 5 stars International version
I got the international version, because I wanted a soft cover (it's lighter and easier to carry through the marathon around champus).I'm rather happy with it, it appears to be pretty much identical to the U.S. version (which is much more expensive as well).Just the colors are a bit dull (not sure if the U.S. version is like that, too).

1-0 out of 5 stars fourth edition !?Already??
Some advice: I have the third edition. It's a useful introductory text. It was published in August 2006, 24 months before the fourth. Way too soon for a new edition. Save your money and buy the third. You'll do fine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
As a psychology student, I was already aware of many of these authors and their work. However, 50 Psychology Classics gave nice, brief overviews that were interestingand informative, so I was never bored. I also got some new ideas for additions to my reading list! This book is written in easy-to-understand language, and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in why human beings are the way we are.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a stretch
I have mixed feelings about this book. It's fun to be reminded, for example, of the "games people play" (Eric Berne) and, finally, I've learned how to pronounce the last name of flow theorist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi ("Chick-sent-me-hi"). But I don't consider Malcolm Gladwell, however smart and entertaining and interesting he is, to be on a par with Carl Jung and Karen Horney. I only recommend this book if you're looking for a Reader's Digest approach to psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time well spent!
I was seeking a Cliff's Note version of every notable Psychology theorist of our time in reference to Who We Are and How We Think. This collection delivered that and more! Not only were notable Psychology greats covered with an excellent summary of their key findings/beliefs; but contemporary thought leaders in Communication and Business were mentioned as well with relevant theories. As a result, you gain the most comprehensive understanding on the topic - so YOU can draw your own findings, opinions and debate. ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY TIME WELL SPENT listening to this collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Need more talk on subject matter
I purchased this on audio and feel it needed more discussion on subject matter in the books. It seemed like there was about an equal amount of time listing "books in a simiar vein" and not enough time discussing what the point of that particular book was.Felt kind of like reading the credits of a movie that were an hour long but the movie was only 20 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Come to Your Senses
As a psychology instructor, I found 50 Psychology Classics by Tom Butler-Bowdon to be a well-written, informative treasure trove of information about the theories, concepts, and lives of some of psychology's greatest. In fact, for weeks I've been sharing so many tidbits of information (like Erik Erikson changing his name after he became a United States citizen) with my students that many are probably getting tired of hearing about this awesome book. As expected, the BIG names such as Freud, Skinner, Watson, Erikson, and Maslow are included, and so were some lesser known people whose work I admire. Howard Gardner and his theory of multiple intelligences, Gail Sheehy and her passages of adult life, and Daniel Coleman and his concept of emotional intelligence are but a few of the psychologists included.

My personal favorites include Fritz Perls, noted Gestalt psychologist of yesteryear, and Daniel Seligman, cognitive psychologist. I had forgotten about Perls and his original way of thinking and of dealing with patients. His admonition to "lose your mind and come to your senses" is a concept that I've thought about many times since reading this passage. Perls felt that people think too much, and that with their tendency to overanalyze and fret about things, they fail to truly experience life and its richness. The summary of how Seligman gained insight into his grouchiness at age 50 was quite interesting, and I was fascinated by how he turned this insight into research about the cognitive elements of happiness.

Well-organized and easy to read, each of the 50 classics begins with a few famous quotes from the psychologist before proceeding to "in a nutshell," an overview of the psychologist's work, and a brief biographical sketch. It's reassuring to see this reference book on my shelf, and I'm thinking of buying some for gifts. Yes, it's that good.

In this briefer version of Durand and Barlow's widely taught text, the authors explain abnormal psychology through their standard-setting integrative approach?the most modern, scientifically valid method for studying the subject. Through this integrative approach, users learn that psychological disorders are rarely caused by a single influence, but rooted in the interaction among multiple factors: biological, psychological, cultural, social, familial, and even political. A conversational writing style, consistent pedagogy, video clips of real clients (located on the accompanying Abnormal Psychology Live 2.5 CD-ROM), and real case profiles?95 percent from the authors' own case files?provide a realistic context for the scientific findings of the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just so you know
I didn't write this book.I was a paid technical reviewer, and read an early version of it.I offered some feedback, but certainly didn't write any of it.I assume that Lesley Bolton wrote all of it. I didn't know they were going to put my name and Ph.D. on the cover of the first version, let alone as first author, and I was seriously not pleased when I got my copy. I suggest that anyone who works with the Everything company read their contract carefully.

Lesley has a lot to be proud of, and I am honored to be associated with her work. But it's her work.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly basic overall study
While this book is very well written, the subject matter is fairly basic broad review of psychology. This book is more intended for the most novice scholar in this subject matter. For someone who knows a lot about this field, this book is a fairly basic review of a lot of the most basic of theories, such as Freud and Jung. I recommend this book to beginners for certain, but I don't think it's really meant for people who know a lot about the subject because it really doesn't go in detail enough. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Theories of Developmental Psychology
The book was as it said it would be, a little more marked than i thought though.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I was going to own one book on Developmental Psychology, this would be it!
This is a great, well-organized and concise treatment of developmental psychology. It covers all the important thinkers in clearly written language. It provides enough detail to understand all the theories, but it is very accessible to the average reader.

This is an excellent textbook, but it doesn't read like one.I think it was well thought out and I use it for reference all the time in my coaching practice. If I want to know the essence of a theory, this is where I go for a thorough review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, super slow shipping
I have no complaints about the book, it is in mint condition. The shipping (which seems to be the theme of Amazon) was way too slow.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very complete review of major developmental theories
I just finish reading this book for my graduate course in developmental theories. I found this book covers all major developmental theories. The discriptions on each theory are very complete with the inclusion of thetheory's strengths and weaknesses. Through the descussion of each theory, the author also occasionally inserts a comparison of the present theorywith Piaget's or Freud's stage theories. This really helps me morethoroughly understand various theoretical concepts. The language level ofthis book is moderate; it should not be too difficult for most students. The only problem I have is that there is a little less clear in languagewhen the author tried to describe some highly complicated concepts such asthe Gibson's theory in Chapter 7. I think this problem can be overcome byhaving a good editor when preparing the next revised edition. Generallyspeaking, I should clap with applause for having read this book for mycourse. Thank you! 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Persuasion Techniques For Sales
As a sales professional, this has long been one of my favorite books on how to persuade effectively.

Kevin Hogan offers ten specific topics for detailed discussion, and then he offers concrete real-world examples for each one of them.

When I read in the Wall Street Journal yesterday that this was one of the few allowed books in the common area library at Goldman Sachs, I was reminded to pick it back up and read through it again.

Now I have another page and a half of ideas to implement that will help me be a more effective sales pro.

4-0 out of 5 stars this book is practical, useful, and insightful, and it will make a difference in your life.
The Psychology of Persuasion: How To Persuade Others To Your Way Of Thinking
Review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.

There are a number of things that make this a valuable and worthwhile purchase. First, it is a very good introduction to the whole area of persuasion. Second, it is an easy read and full of interesting examples. Third, it has specific, practical exercises for readers to practice and use in their daily activities. Fourth, it goes over the 9 basic rules that people think about before they make their final decision on anything. Fifth, for those who have difficulty reading or remembering what they read, Hogan includes short summaries at the end of chapters that help readers grasp the information and make it easy for them to quickly review the material as they read. Sixth, the book is replete with lessons, tips, tools, and techniques on how to develop and apply the basic skills of persuasion. Step by step, Hogan explains how and why, and he does it masterfully. Seventh, a point I find particularly important, Hogan successfully uses research-based material and in his explanations and examples, they become user-friendly. While there is a great deal of jargon-filled information in persuasion, you will find this book jargon-free and, thus, highly accessible. Eighth, Hogan offers great insight into the human character and mind and although you may be able to get similar information in other books, he offers it here in a clear, easy-to-understand and apply, straightforward manner. Ninth, although the book is designed for everyone, and the principles apply to any and every aspect of influencing others, Hogan focuses at points directly on the work of salespeople, and if you are in sales, this is an essential resource. Tenth, there are six areas of the book that are especially strong (well presented): 1) hypnotic language, 2) neurolinguistic programming, 3) nonverbal communication, 4) building rapport, 5) ethics, and 6) outcome-based thinking. Just his treatment of these six areas alone, make this book a standout. For these reasons, this book is practical, useful, and insightful, and it will make a difference in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERSUASION AT ITS BEST
I have been a salesman all of my life (I remember incidents back to the age of 5).
This is the best redition of the subject of persuasion that I have ever read.It
is honest, clear and presented in a way that the "art" of persuasion is "learnable".
Many self help books merely confuse and create insecurity. This book does not.
ROBERT A ROSENBLUM

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of Hot Air & no Substance
This is one of the most painful self-help books I've trudged through because page after page contains nothing but heady promises never fulfilled, self-promotion, and just bad writing. For example, in Chapter 1, Mr. Hogan says: "I want to share with you three ways to change that no one wants you to know about." Curious and excited? I was. And what were those three ways? 1. how you appear to others #wow!# 2. where you are #people act differently in church then they do when alone, you don't say Mr. Hogan!# and 3. well, Mr. Hogan does not provide the third way; maybe those "others" got to him too.
Another example: Ch. 12: Mr. Hogan says that focus groups don't work. Why? Because "all the research shows that focus groups don't work." But Mr. Hogan will help you out: "There is an alternative: if you need to know, contact me." And here I thought that's what I was buying the book for.
A final example: Ch. 5. "Seven Ways to Increase Your Credibility: 1. be a fluid communicator; 2. be likable; 3...." Brilliant. Basically, Mr. Hogan wrote this book, among hundreds of others #& his weekly CDs, which he tells you to buy at every 10 pages or so# to tell people that to increase your sales, you need to become a better salesperson. The only part of the book worth a straw is when he steals, err, cites to the 6 principles of influence from Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials) [which he does not cite in his bibliography...], probably the best and only book worth reading on the subject of influence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A textbook for those who negotiate frequently.
And let's face it, we all are negotiators. Whether it is our professional life or personal, we all need tips on how to persuade. In his book, Kevin Hogan gives solid and very actionable tips. He talks about laws of persuasion, the impact of nonverbal communication and communication styles, how to build instant rapport and much more. I highly recommend this book. Together with Get Anyone to Do Anything: Never Feel Powerless Again--With Psychological Secrets to Control and Influence Every Situation it will make a great addition to your knowledge library. ... A market leader for over 30 years, A HISTORY OF MODERN PSYCHOLOGY has been praised for its comprehensive coverage and biographical approach. Focusing on modern psychology, the text's coverage begins with the late 19th century. The authors personalize the history of psychology not only by using biographical information on influential theorists, but also by showing how major events in those theorists' lives have affected the authors' own ideas, approaches, and methods. Substantial updates in this edition include discussions of evolutionary psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and positive psychology. The result is a text that is as timely and relevant today as it was when it was first introduced. ... Read more

I suggest no one purchase from this seller. I placed an order on the 8th of September trying to purchase a psychology book. Usually i get my books within the first week to week in a half. I contacted this seller on three different occasions and never recieved a response. The most responsible thing to do would at least be to e-mail me back and let me know what was going on with the order. It is now October 3rd and i have yet to hear back from this seller or get my book. So try and find another seller if you can.

The book came in at a timely manner. I was a little unsatisfied about the description because it said some highlighting but it had more than I expected. When sellers say SOME they mean a chapter or so but most of the book was highlighted which I did not like. Other than that it was a good purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy unless you have to
This was the required text for my Health Psychology course. Thank goodness I have a good teacher, because this book is not worth the money or the time it takes to read it.

Organization: Heading are confusing and badly organized. It's often unclear when a section of text is subsection of the paragraph before it. Text is in large unbroken sections. Pictures and graphs leave something to be desired.

Content: Too many of the citations are from the seventies. It seems to me like it needed at least two more edits before going to print mostly because it has a lot of fluff for the simplicity of the ideas that are presented. Most of the content is basic stuff that you would find in your average health pamphlet, but there are some challenging ideas.

Glossary: confusing and poorly written definitions which sometimes deviate substantially from the accepted definition of a word.

Maybe by the end of the course I'll dislike this book a little less, but it's doubtfull.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good text on health psychology, although very individualistic
Good general overview of health psychology... not much attention to SES factors and other social policy things that might enhance people's ability to improve their own psychological and physical wellbeing. Focuses more on individuals and what influences them and what they should do to be happy and healthy - less focus on how we can tackle those influences that limit or interfere with individuals' efforts. This can come across as a bias against the significance of the barriers that people of low SES and disadvantaged or otherwise prejudiced groups encounter, suggesting that individuals can overcome these obstacles without giving ample attention to what those obstacles are and why they persist. However, including all of the social policy implications may be a bigger picture than the reader is looking for. I was nervous after I read that it would take a long time for the book to come. I think it said somewhere that it could come in like up to 16 days, or something like that. Well, I had already just added the class so I didn't want to wait. In just three days I decided to write them to tell them to cancel, because they didn't put that my book had shipped, so I thought that it wasn't even shipped. I waited one more day, due to being busy and then the book had came that morning. It was pretty fast for it being sent from oversea's. It was shipped from England to Los Angeles. I am happy that I recieved the book so fast. It was in perfect condition too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan Psych Rev
I haven't had a thorough look through this yet, but so far this book is amazing. It is extremely detailed in its information, which is great when learning new facts. I would highly recommend this book to study from... but I haven't yet taken the GRE, so I suppose take this with a grain of salt.

This was exactly what I hoped it would be when I ordered it.I need to take a practice psychology GRE exam & this book contains sample tests to take.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I bought this for my sister-in-law who, at the time, was a sophomore and who wanted a head start at studying for her GRE.She gave great compliments to the information included as it helped solidify her desire to study psychology. However, this should not be used as your only resource for studying for the GRE.As other reviewers have noted, the book does contain some typos and formatting errors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Start, but not Enough
This book is a good start for getting ready for the PSY GRE, but it's not enough. I used this book, the Princeton Review book, David Myer's Intro to Psy. book, as well as my other textbooks, and of course... the internet. The best way to use this book is to: a) read the chapters so you're familiar with the basic concepts, b) look up names and studies that you're unfamiliar with on the internet, c) make flashcards of concepts and psychologists you think are important.

The practice tests are not good predictors of the actual GRE, but are more of a studying tool. I scored in the low 700s on each of the practice tests, but scored an 830 on the actual test; so, my scores in the Kaplan practice exams were at least 1 SD away from my score in the actual exam. Still, it was useful in that it showed me what my weaknesses were.

Also, if you're hard up for cash, these books are usually at your local library, and they don't change much (if at all) from year to year.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book was a very important part of my preparation
I am perfectly happy that I bought this book, because it did exactly what I had hoped it would do - help me score in the 99th percentile (830) on the psych GRE.But it is not enough by itself! If you rely on this book as your primary means of test preparation, you probably won't get a stellar score.

This book was only ONE PART of my overall preparation strategy.More important to my preparation was reading a Psych 101 textbook.Specifically, I bought a cheap used copy of Gleitman's introductory psych book (Psychology - 6th (Sixth) Edition) and read it section by section. When I completed a section of the textbook (e.g. Sensation and Perception), I would go the Kaplan book and read the corresponding chapter there. That way I covered the material twice. After reading both the textbook and the Kaplan chapter, I would then go to the website for the Gleitman textbook where you can find online quizzes and vocabulary reviews. After taking the quizzes online, I knew if there were any areas I didn't understand and/or needed to review further.Fortunately, there are lots of resources on the web for studying any areas you need to work on.

And of course I made flashcards of vocabulary, theories, and important psychologists. And I took practice tests. And I re-reviewed everything.A lot.Basically what I'm saying is that it takes a good amount of time and effort. The Kaplan review book isn't going to work miracles by itself.

While the Kaplan review book was helpful in my preparation, in my opinion it has two deficiencies.1.) The methodology and statistics section of the book is not thorough enough.Do what I did and go to internet to get bit more information on things like ANOVAs and factorial design. 2.) The practice tests are almost worthless. They are incredibly poorly written (as far as diagnostic tests go), and in no way do they approximate the real Psych GRE tests.I took the first one, but I didn't bother with the second.Do yourself a favor and find the real ones.

It has been 10 years since I graduated with my bachelor's in psych, so I had forgotten a fair amount of stuff.Despite that, using the Kaplan book as an important part of my preparation, I managed to score very well on the test.If you devote a few months to your preparation and take it seriously, you should be able to do the same.If you don't, I'm not sure how much this book is going to help you. ...
