Product Description
This book shows through accessible argument and numerous examples how understanding moral philosophy can improve economic analysis, how moral philosophy can benefit from economists' analytical tools, and how economic analysis and moral philosophy together can inform public policy. Part I explores rationality and its connections to morality. It argues that in defending their model of rationality, mainstream economists implicitly espouse contestable moral principles.Part II concerns welfare, utilitarianism and standard welfare economics, while Part III considers important moral notions that are left out of standard welfare economics, such as freedom, rights, equality, and justice.Part III also emphasizes the variety of moral considerations that are relevant to evaluating policies.Part IV then introduces technical work in social choice theory and game theory that is guided by ethical concepts and relevant to moral theorizing.Chapters include recommended readings and the book includes a glossary of relevant terms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why Ethics Guides and Should Guide Economists' Advice
ECONOMIC ANALYSIS, MORAL PHILOSOPHY, AND PUBLIC POLICY is an erudite and important book. It presents a serious challenge to the prevailing belief that economists' policy recommendations usually are or can be grounded solely in their scientific opinion. Hausman and McPherson display a keen sense of the assumptions that underlie rational-choice theory and how those assumptions affect the relevance of the models that rational-choice theorists devise. They also exhibit an intimate knowledge of the most cogent, contemporary approaches in moral philosophy. Although they sometimes go astray with regard to the specific implications of their broader argument, these missteps are only minor flows in an outstanding work. ... Read more

Product Description

Who Leads Whom? is an ambitious study that addresses some of the most important questions in contemporary American politics: Do presidents pander to public opinion by backing popular policy measures that they believe would actually harm the country? Why do presidents "go public" with policy appeals? And do those appeals affect legislative outcomes?

Analyzing the actions of modern presidents ranging from Eisenhower to Clinton, Brandice Canes-Wrone demonstrates that presidents' involvement of the mass public, by putting pressure on Congress, shifts policy in the direction of majority opinion. More important, she also shows that presidents rarely cater to the mass citizenry unless they already agree with the public's preferred course of action. With contemporary politics so connected to the pulse of the American people, Who Leads Whom? offers much-needed insight into how public opinion actually works in our democratic process. Integrating perspectives from presidential studies, legislative politics, public opinion, and rational choice theory, this theoretical and empirical inquiry will appeal to a wide range of scholars of American political processes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Study Guide
This study guide was pretty good. The questions have a good mix of difficulty, and the samples and explanations really helped with a couple of the concepts that were pretty unclear in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting textbook about labor economics
I was a teaching assistant in a labor economics undergraduate course in Northwestern University that used this book. I found it very interesting and full of real-world examples and discussions. The mathematical level is simple and therefore the book is accessible also to students with only little background in mathematics or economics. The exposition is clear. About half of the problems and the review questions are solved at the end of the book, making it possible for the reader to practice and test her understanding of the material. I believe that most students can understand most of the material in the book even without taking a formal course in labor economics, and therefore I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the functioning of labor markets. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
How do the public policies of the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom stack up against one another? Comparing Public Policies combines a conceptual discussion of policy-making with an examination of seven specific policy areas using a cross-national perspective. Adolino and Blake strike a balance between policy analysis and description as they provide students with a helpful mix of analytical tools and background information.

The book begins with a concise overview of the policy process and then considers the role of cultural, economic, political, and institutional influences on policy-making. A brief chapter describes the political system of the six countries and provides necessary context. The core of the book is devoted to seven policy areas: immigration, fiscal policy, taxation, health care, social policy, education, and the environment. Each chapter shares a common framework that begins with an introduction to a policy topic, follows with its examination in each country, and concludes with an analysis of cross-national trends-past and present-in policy choices, outcomes, and dynamics. A final chapter re-examines the internationalization of public policy in industrialized countries. Adolino and Blake also consider how policymakers use this comparative perspective to guide them in their policy choices and help them pursue those choices within the political process.

Useful pedagogical features have been incorporated throughout the text. "In Depth" boxes offer students a more detailed discussion of a policy issue, political process, or analytical technique while "Country At-a-Glance" boxes provide quick reference to the political institutions of each country. A wealth of recent data is displayed in numerous tables and a glossary gives students a practical guide to terminology. ... Read more

Social Welfare: Politics and Public Policy, Seventh Edition, emphasizes the current political aspects of policymaking and major social welfare programs, including public assistance, Social Security, disability, health insurance, and much more. The author also focuses on policies that affect issues as racism, sexism, gay rights, and immigration. In addition, a wealth of updated instructor and student supplements give this text its celebrated advantage as a leader in the social welfare policy textbook market. This book stands out from others because it does more than describe the major social welfare policies and programs. The book also tackles the conflict and controversies surrounding these programs. Social policy is not presented as solutions to social problems. Social policy is portrayed as public conflict over the nature and causes of social welfare problems, over what, if anything, should be done about them, over who should do it, and over who should decide about it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage of policy implementation
Implementation, putting laws into action and making them real--not just words on a piece of paper--is a key stage in the policy process. It is also one of the less obvious to most citizens. If good ideas do not get implemented well, the ultimate result of a policy may be failure.

This book is valuable because of its near encyclopedic coverage of a myriad studies on the subject. If you are a doctoral student preparing for comprehensive exams in policy, this book would be a great resource for the implementation part of the policy process.

Is it a good read? Not really. It can be rather slow going. But its coverage still makes this a valuable work. The book does a nice job looking at the ongoing issue of "top down" models (have central governments enforce implementation) versus "bottom up" (take into account the role of those who actually implement policy; if they work against policy, it may end up failing). The authors also discuss the various efforts that try to synthesize bottom up versus top down.

The book also discusses the extent to which implementation remains a live area for research.

In short, if one wants to get a sense of the landscape in implementation research these days, this would be a good resource. Don't expect to enjoy reading the book, but do expect to get acquainted with the literature and the debates within that literature.

Product Description

Seen from the outside, the world of politics and policy-making seems to be in constant flux.  Leading institutionalist and sociological theories of the state, on the other hand, predict equilibrium and stability.  This book addresses this contradiction by posing the question: Why do some (but not all) individuals possessing the power and influence necessary to make a difference in contemporary democratic societies – actors whose very position suggests that they have done well under existing conditions – actively seek to change policies or institutions? Ongoing competition for legitimate authority, the book’s authors conclude, provides the often-neglected dynamic element that explains this behavior.

Product Description

Sports figures, events, and organizations affect our society in vast, varied, and sometimes unexpected ways. To gain a broad-based understanding of how sport interfaces with public policy issues, a variety of viewpoints must be considered. Sport and Public Policy: Social, Political, and Economic Perspectives is the only text that examines some of the most compelling policy issues affecting the sports world from an interdisciplinary perspective—including economics, history, urban planning, not-for-profit administration, public health communications, political science, and philosophy. With contributions from a wide range of scholarly disciplines, this contemporary resource enhances traditional conversation and gives readers a fresh outlook on economic and political issues in sport.

Sport and Public Policy presents a contemporary view of how to understand and analyze complex and controversial topics. It begins by examining issues related to professional sports—including the unique nature of American sports leagues, the decisions and conflicts involved in the organization of sports leagues and events, and labor strikes and conflicts. It then examines professional sports, cities, and public finance. Readers are drawn into thought-provoking discussion of issues such as the public investment in sports facilities and recent trends in stadium and arena construction. The book also presents an example of a unique model of not-for-profit community ownership in action, which readers can implement in their own cities.

Sport and Public Policy explores amateur sports by presenting a fresh perspective on the link between sports and society, the dwindling levels of African-American participation in baseball, and whether or not the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s actions align with its stated principles and values. It also challenges the reader to think globally through a discussion of how sports affect and are affected by international relations, how a changing world economy is affecting the Olympic games, Major League Baseball’s efforts at global expansion, and the effects of global consumer marketing efforts.

The chapters encourage readers to consider their role as participants in sports and use their great power to make individual choices that influence their communities. To enhance the learning experience, Sport and Public Policy offers the following:

An application and implementation section in select chapters helps readers understand how to apply the content in their own roles in the sport industry or society. The case studies added to most chapters illustrate how the information and research are being applied in the real world.   Some of the hottest topics in the sports world are covered from a public policy perspective, giving readers a new angle from which to analyze issues now and in the future.

Sport and Public Policy is a timely resource that will be valued by many. Researchers will use it as a springboard for further study of how sport affects our society economically, socially, and politically. Practitioners and anyone else interested in the role of sport in America will find the book creates a critical new awareness of sport’s interface with public policy and the potentially far-reaching implications of their decisions.
