Product Description
This new report from the National Research Council's Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board (NRSB) and the Transportation Research Board reviews the risks and technical and societal concerns for the transport of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in the United States. Shipments are expected to increase as the U.S. Department of Energy opens a repository for spent fuel and high-level waste at Yucca Mountain, and the commercial nuclear industry considers constructing a facility in Utah for temporary storage of spent fuel from some of its nuclear waste plants. The report concludes that there are no fundamental technical barriers to the safe transport of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive and the radiological risks of transport are well understood and generally low. However, there are a number of challenges that must be addressed before large-quantity shipping programs can be implemented successfully. Among these are managing "social" risks. The report does not provide an examination of the security of shipments against malevolent acts but recommends that such an examination be carried out. ... Read more

Product Description
This book, published by Izdat in Moscow in 1994, tells the story of the first 40 years of work in the former Soviet Union to devise, test, and execute a program to dispose by deep injection millions of cubic meters of liquid radioactive wastes from nuclear materials reprocessing. The book explains decisions involving safety aspects, research results, and practical experience gained during the creation and operation of disposal systems.

One objective for publishing the original Russian text was to set forth the results of studies and practical efforts in a form accessible to a broad audience. These studies of deep injection disposal will be useful in studying other problems worldwide involving the economic use of the space beneath the Earth's surface. The material in this book is, therefore, presented with an eye toward other possible applications.Because liquid radioactive wastes are so toxic and the decisions made are so vital, many topics in waste disposal have been examined with special care. Developments in this area will be of great interest for the disposal of nonradioactive wastes. ... Read more

Product Description
The international trade in hazardous and radioactive waste todeveloping countries with inadequate infrastructure and lenientenvironmental laws has grown during recent decades and has been thetarget of public opposition in both developed and developingcountries. The book contains a comprehensive analysis of the pertinentinternational legislation, as well as a comparative analysis of theEuropean and the United States legislation and policies. This analysis demonstrates that current policies have failed becausethey have not taken account of the conflicting dimensions of the wasteissue. Louka, therefore, proposes an alternative approach based onthese dimensions, as well as efficiency and effectivenessconsiderations. For international, comparative, and environmental lawyers andscholars, as well as everyone who is concerned with the issue ofinternational waste transfers. ... Read more

Product Description
This technical report describes the results of the Nuclear Energy Agency's CLAYTRAC project, in which natural tracer data from nine sites was evaluated to assess potential impacts of disposal of radiological waste in geological repositories. It shows scientific information from numerous sites and applies robust analytical methods to improve the understanding of radionuclide migration and evolution of sites for deep geological disposal. These results improve the understanding of sites, and thus the confidence in safety, for geological disposal of radioactive waste. ... Read more
