5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the do-it-yourselfer.
This book was recommended to me by a supplier of radon mitigation equipment and is excellent. It has more than adequate design and installation to allow a reasonably competent DIYer to design and installtheir own radon mitigation system. In addition, it covers the necessarysafety precautions to take in the process.

If you don't plan to installyour own system, but simply want to be informed as you work with aprofessional, then this book will also serve you well.

Now if I can justfind a book of this type for septic system design...

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Thorough. Fills a Need.
This book discusses the definition of the Radon transform, it's properties, it's relation to other transforms (Fourier, et al.), it's inverse, and so on. It is well documented. (It even contains a translationof Radon's original 1917 paper!)

This book is the most useful source ofsuch information I've found, so far. I judge it to be a bit challenging toadvanced undergraduate students in mathematics and engineering. Graduatestudents should be able to handle it and may also feel that it extendsthem.

Four stars instead of five because some of the proofs referencepapers apart from the book. It could be more readable, but it is quite goodas it is.

I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting and fabulous, technically sound, every page counts.
Stanley Roderick Deans shows us radon transforms like never before seen. This is quite a technically sound spell-bounding book. I have found every page to be useful. I even often go through it again and again on a daily basis. Quite a stunning techinical achievement. A must read for anyone serious about the study of mathematics. ... Read more

Book Description
Radiation, radioactivity, radon: these are words that, since Hiroshima, the Cold War, and Three Mile Island, have conjured fear and fascination for many Americans. The threat of nuclear war, however, was always abstract at best, and the possibility of a meltdown was seen primarily as a localized catastrophe.Yet the danger of radon--an invisible, odorless gas that could seemingly attack any home and afflict its residents with a deadly cancer--struck home in the 1980s when whole neighborhoods were deemed unsafe and homeowners were forced to relocate, often at great expense. But how much of a threat does radon really pose to Americans? Is the government's aggressive policy toward this "silent killer" warranted?Indeed, is there a legitimate threat at all? These are the important questions Leonard A. Cole asks in this provocative and fascinating new book, and his answers are ones that all homeowners will want to understand. In clear, non-technical language, Cole dispels many of the myths surrounding radon as he makes recommendations for a coherent, reasonable environmental policy toward what is, certainly, a dangerous gas.But at what levels does radon become a health problem? From all the alarmist headlines ("Major Radon Peril Is Declared By U.S." screamed the New York Times in 1988), average Americans would never know that the threat of radon is much debated, among scientists as well as among government officials. They would never know that numerous European countries--with advanced environmental policies--see the radon levels found in homes and apartments as much less of a danger than we do.And they would never know that not even a single lung cancer death can be directly attributed to a radon-contaminated environment. As he carefully traces the development of the U.S.indoor radon policy, Cole illuminates the many scientific uncertainties that lie behind it, and challenges EPA's risk-cost assessment of radon levels. He shows, too, that no epidemiological study has confirmed that homeowners are at great risk, and exposes those who stand to gain from the policy decisions made in Washington.Since it is not caused by any industry, radon has been a politically convenient issue. Under the Reagan administration, for example, an aggressive radon policy proved an easy way to challenge the popular perception of an anti-environmental president. In the end, Cole convincingly argues for less strict radon regulations, and maintains that the average citizen must be involved in the decision-making process, and must be allowed to exercise her own informed judgment.Thoughtful and timely, Element of Risk illuminates one of the most important public policy issues of our time.It is a book homeowners and taxpayers, scientists and policymakers, will find essential reading. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Objective and Useful
A worthwhile book. For those wanting to learn about radon, it is far better than the "dumbed down" publications the EPA provides to the general audience.Presents several points of view as to the possibleradon health threat. The book also provides insight into howone U.S.federal standard (the 4 pCi/L "limit") was set. What this bookreally needs is an updated edition.A lot more data have been collectedsince this book was published in 1993. ... Book Description

The Radon transform is an important topic in integral geometry which deals with the problem of expressing a function on a manifold in terms of its integrals over certain submanifolds. Solutions to such problems have a wide range of applications, namely to partial differential equations, group representations, X-ray technology, nuclear magnetic resonance scanning, and tomography. This second edition, significantly expanded and updated, presents new material taking into account some of the progress made in the field since 1980.

The first chapter introduces the Radon transform and presents new material on the d-plane transform and applications to the wave equation. Chapter 2 places the Radon transform in a general framework of integral geometry known as a double fibration of a homogeneous space. Several significant examples are developed in detail. Two subsequent chapters treat some specific examples of generalized Radon transforms, for examples, antipodal manifold in compact 2-points homogeneous spaces, and orbital integrals in isotropic Lorentzian manifolds. A final chapter deals with Fourier transforms and distributions, developing all the tools needed in the work.

Aimed at beginning graduate students, this monograph will be useful in the classroom or as a resource for self-study. Readers will find here an accessible introduction to Radon transform theory, an elegant topic in integral geometry.

Book Description
If you have wondered about the actual dangers of asbestos, radon, earthquakes, etc., that are mentioned but not explained very well in the news, then this book is certainly for you. The book was commissioned by the AIPG to give readers knowledge that will save lives and dollars. It explains geologic hazards, the risks these hazards pose, and how professional geologists help to mitigate these risks. The book was written for non-scientists, especially planners, contractors, homeowners, elected officials, insurance underwriters, lenders and financiers, realtors, science teachers, and students. Although geologists have the knowledge that can help reduce the risks, the value of this knowledge will increase greatly when the majority of citizens also understand the hazards and can upgrade public policies that will guarantee that available knowledge is used. ... Product Description
Since their emergence in 1917, tomography and inverse problems remain active and important fields that combine pure and applied mathematics and provide strong interplay between diverse mathematical problems and applications. The applied side is best known for medical and scientific use, in particular, medical imaging, radiotherapy, and industrial non-destructive testing. Doctors use tomography to see the internal structure of the body or to find functional information, such as metabolic processes, noninvasively. Scientists discover defects in objects, the topography of the ocean floor, and geological information using X-rays, geophysical measurements, sonar, or other data. This volume, based on the lectures in the Short Course The Radon Transform and Applications to Inverse Problems at the American Mathematical Society meeting in Atlanta, GA, January 3-4, 2005, brings together articles on mathematical aspects of tomography and related inverse problems. The articles cover introductory material, theoretical problems, and practical issues in 3-D tomography, impedance imaging, local tomography, wavelet methods, regularization and approximate inverse, sampling, and emission tomography. All contributions are written for a general audience, and the authors have included references for further reading. ... Read more

Book Description
In recent years, the perception of indoor radon as a relatively minor health issue has been radically altered: observations in Sweden, Canada, and the U.S. have revealed the high incidence of elevated radon levels in ordinary houses and the extreme hazard of inhaling radon decay products. These findings have lead to a wide range of activities and intensive research aimed at limiting human exposure to radon. This is one of the few books to provide a comprehensive, insightful analysis of the radon problem. Papers reflecting the most current research critically review all major aspects of this issue, each providing sufficient detail to be accessible to those who are technically trained but lack prior direct experience. Coverage includes the generation and migration of radon in source material, the physical and chemical behavior of radon, current evidence on the health effects and risk of exposure, and the strategic and tactical aspects of controlling exposures. ... Description:
On December 10, 2003, an earthquake of magnitude (M) 6.8, the strongest since 1951, occurred near the Chengkung area in eastern Taiwan. Approximately 65d prior to the 2003 Chengkung earthquake, precursory changes in the groundwater radon concentration were observed at the Antung radon-monitoring station located 20km from the epicenter. The radon anomaly was a decrease from a background level of 28.9BqL^-^1 to a minimum of 12.2BqL^-^1. Observations at the Antung hot spring suggest that the groundwater radon, when observed under suitable geological conditions, can be a sensitive tracer for strain changes in the crust preceding an earthquake. ...
