Book Description
Introduction to Microwave Remote Sensing offers an extensive overview of this versatile and extremely precise technology for technically oriented undergraduates and graduate students.

This textbook emphasizes an important shift in conceptualization and directs it toward students with prior knowledge of optical remote sensing: the author dispels any linkage between microwave and optical remote sensing. Instead, he constructs the concept of microwave remote sensing by comparing it to the process of audio perception, explaining the workings of the ear as a metaphor for microwave instrumentation.

This volume takes an application-driven approach. Instead of describing the technology and then its uses, this textbook justifies the need for measurement then explains how microwave technology addresses this need.

Following a brief summary of the field and a history of the use of microwaves, the book explores the physical properties of microwaves and the polarimetric properties of electromagnetic waves. It examines the interaction of microwaves with matter, analyzes passive atmospheric and passive surface measurements, and describes the operation of altimeters and scatterometers. The textbook concludes by explaining how high resolution images are created using radars, and how techniques of interferometry can be applied to both passive and active sensors. ... Read more

Product Description

The book presents the state of the art of forest resources assessments and monitoring and provides links to practical applications of forest and natural resource assessment programs. Besides the assessment of the productive functions of forests, special emphasis is put on the quantification of nonwood goods and services and the relationship of forests and other landscape elements. All methodology is presented in the framework of sustainable forest management of the multiple functions forests are capable of providing to the natural environment and society. The book was developed as a reference text for (forest) biometricians, practitioners involved in forest and natural resources assessment and monitoring programs, and graduate students with a strong interest in becoming forest inventory specialists.

To accomplish these goals, the book provides a short summary of the history of forest resources assessments, introduces some general aspects of the planning and organization of forest inventories, gives an overview of the assessment of attributes of single trees and forest stands, including global positioning systems and location-based services, and presents the critical definitions and theory needed for designing sample-based surveys and performing statistical inference. One chapter is devoted to the theory and application of remote-sensing techniques, another chapter to geographic information systems. The last chapter concerns topics such as dissemination of inventory results, forest information systems, and the application of IT techniques. Future needs for research and methodological developments are outlined.

Book Description
In an age of unprecedented proliferation of data from disparate sources the urgency is to create efficient methodologies that can optimise data combinations and at the same time solve increasingly complex application problems. Integration of GIS and Remote Sensing explores the tremendous potential that lies along the interface between GIS and remote sensing for activating interoperable databases and instigating information interchange. It concentrates on the rigorous and meticulous aspects of analytical data matching and thematic compatibility - the true roots of all branches of GIS/remote sensing applications. However closer harmonization is tempered by numerous technical and institutional issues, including scale incompatibility, measurement disparities, and the inescapable notion that data from GIS and remote sensing essentially represent diametrically opposing conceptual views of reality.

The first part of the book defines and characterises GIS and remote sensing and presents the reader with an awareness of the many scale, taxonomical and analytical problems when attempting integration. The second part of the book moves on to demonstrate the benefits and costs of integration across a number of human and environmental applications.

This book is an invaluable reference for students and professionals dealing not only with GIS and remote sensing, but also computer science, civil engineering, environmental science and urban planning within the academic, governmental and commercial/business sectors. ... Read more

Book Description

Whether deployed in space or on the surface of the earth, remote sensing instruments are increasingly becoming standard archaeological tools. Space age techniques have begun to accumulate a wealth of information and unusual evidence such as the presence of sand-buried courses of ancient rivers in the Sahara and the associated remains of human occupations. Perhaps as important, some have been able to gather priceless knowledge without disturbing fragile sitesa capability that is particularly significant in this era of conservation.

Remote Sensing in Archaeology illustrates the uses of advanced technology in archaeological investigation. It deals with hand-held instruments that probe the subsurface of the earth to unveil layering and associated sites; underwater exploration and photography of submerged sites and artifacts; and the utilization of imaging from aircraft and spacecraft to reveal the regional setting of archaeological sites and to assist in cultural resource management. In each case, the technical developments are explained first, followed by examples of applications as case studies.

Contributors are renowned experts from the international scientific community. Each chapter is composed as a self-standing contribution with a summary and an introduction to help the reader grasp the value of its contents. The book is profusely illustrated with graphs and photographs to explain the methodologies and results, so that the reader may better understand the principles involved and apply the knowledge gained to similar environments. Complete lists of references cited will also allow the reader to investigate more deeply the problems and findings.

This book provides an excellent and diverse overview of the emerging capability of remote sensing archaeology and is a very valuable and important text for archaeologists in their quest to use advanced technology to help in their studies of exploration, and for remote sensing technologists and scientists by giving them a good understanding of the challenges that archaeologists find in their endeavors. The editors are to be applauded for bringing together such an excellent collection of authors and articles to cover this important emerging field.

Book Description

The aquatic coastal zone is one of the most challenging targets for environmental remote sensing. Properties such as bottom reflectance, spectrally diverse suspended sediments and phytoplankton communities, diverse benthic communities, and transient events that affect surface reflectance (coastal blooms, runoff, etc.) all combine to produce an optical complexity not seen in terrestrial or open ocean systems. Despite this complexity, remote sensing is proving to be an invaluable tool for "Case 2" waters. This book presents recent advances in coastal remote sensing with an emphasis on applied science and management. Case studies of the operational use of remote sensing in ecosystem studies, monitoring, and interfacing remote sensing/science/management are presented. Spectral signatures of phytoplankton and suspended sediments are discussed in detail with accompanying discussion of why blue water (Case 1) algorithms cannot be applied to Case 2 waters.

Audience

This book is targeted for scientists and managers interested in using remote sensing in the study or management of aquatic coastal environments. With only limited discussion of optics and theory presented in the book, such researchers might benefit from the detailed presentations of aquatic spectral signatures, and to operational management issues. While not specifically written for remote sensing scientists, it will prove to be a useful reference for this community for the current status of aquatic coastal remote sensing.

CD included

An interactive CD accompanies this book containing the WASI program by Peter Gege (DLR, Germany). The WASI program allows users to interactively manipulate and view coastally relevant spectra. The CD also contains full color images of a selection of illustrations which are printed as black and white figures in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars I wonder?
There is a reference to my GT-INDEX in 2nd edition, at chap. 13/Accuracy assessment. However, my GT-Index is not a so-called chance corrected accuracy index. It is the first and only index for measuring the identifying power of classifier. GT-Index is an estimate of the CONDITIONAL PROBABILITY of CORRECT CLASSIFICATION for a given Ground Truth category by RS classifier.

I critized the use of so-called "chance corrected accuracy indices" such as Kappa, Tau etc. by 2 letters to editors in 2002 (PE&RS, Feb. 2002 and RSE, Sep. 2002).

I did not have a chance to see it the 3rd yet. I wonder how this
issues and my GT-INDEX are handled in this edition.

If these issues are not considered I will give only 3 stars, but a correct discussion of them will surely make 5 stars. So, my staring is tentative.

Book Description
Discover the principles and techniques of remote sensing with polarimetric radar

This book presents the principles central to understanding polarized wave transmission, scattering, and reception in communication systems and polarimetric and non-polarimetric radar. Readers gain new insight into the methods for remotely gathering data about the earth's surface and atmosphere with polarimetric synthetic-aperture radar and polarimetric interferometry, including the changes that take place with seasons, floods, earthquakes, and other natural phenomena. In particular, with the book's focus on polarimetric radars, readers discover how to exploit the many special features of these systems, which provide the maximum amount of information that can be obtained remotely with radar.

Introductory-level coverage of electromagnetic wave propagation, antennas, radar and synthetic aperture radar, probability and random processes, and radar interferometry serves as a foundation for advancing to more complex material. A more advanced mathematical and technical treatment enables readers to fully grasp polarized wave transmission, propagation, and reception in communication systems and polarimetric-radar remote sensing. Readers will discover much new material in this text, including:

  • Distinguishing between coherently-measured and incoherently-measured target matrices for power, recognizing that the two matrix types are not equivalent in representing targets
  • Removing unpolarized components from the scattered wave and deriving a target matrix for classification from the resulting coherently-scattered wave
  • Selecting an antenna polarization to maximize the contrast between desired and undesired depolarizing targets

Problems ranging in complexity from introductory to challenging are presented throughout the text.

Engineers will find this an ideal reference to help them fully utilize the powerful capabilities of polarimetric radar. It will also help agronomists, geographers, meteorologists, and other scientists who use remotely obtained data about the earth to evaluate procedures and better interpret the data. The book can also be tailored to both undergraduate and graduate courses in remote sensing, and recommendations are given for text material suitable for such courses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lidar fundamentals
If you need a comprehensive introduction to Lidar technology, then Raymond Measures' Laser Remote Sensing: Fundamentals and Applications is really your only choice. The book is well written and nicely organized.

The science of light scattering (elastic, Raman, and fluorescence, chapters 2-4) is presented clearly, with appropriately detailed derivations.Elsewhere the level of detail and significance is uneven.I'd like to see a uniform presentation of Lidar engineering principles rather than a spotty coverage with detailed derivations. Two essential topics receive little or no coverage: eye safety restrictions and methods for high-speed detection.

Even with its 1992 update, the book is growing a bit long in the tooth. For instance, Measures notes the future importance of infrared Lidar, but does not teach any of the necessary technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book for lidar study
clearly addressed, even published in 1984, it beats all other similar books in laser remote sensing filed today. 2-0 out of 5 stars Unclear Explanations, not for first timers
Using this book for a RADARS course, me and my friends find that this book is really unclear and poorly written. The author likes to twist words around blurring the explanations. The author does presents ideas in a more colloquial style which makes it easier to read, however I find it unhelpful in anyways to understanding concepts. The author should really learn from Jackson (Classical EM) in ways to present concepts precisely. Another problem: The author refers readers to Vol 1 of this series of books, which does not help because at ~ $$$ perbook, students won't be spending the extra $ to get his Vol 1.

I think this book would serve well as a reference for those who have background in RADARS. If you are starting off learning RADARS, this book is not a good idea. Sidenote: Fortunately our professor does a good job complementing this book by adding more explanations and examples.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible quality & poorly written
This was a required book for my college class. The quality of the book is horrible - pages come out randomly, and the print quality is terrible - it looks like a poorly copied B&W version of a color book. The captions in the photos talk about the colors in the photo, but guess what? There is NO COLOR!Unbelievable that a book in remote sensing, which relies on color coding for interpretation, would be printed in b&w!And unbelievable based on the price.

The organization and writing in the book is very hard to follow - extremely technical with very little practical explanation.(Of course, it might be easier to follow if you could actually see the detail in the photos!)Combine that with a professor that hates to explain, and you have a very difficult remote sensing class!

2-0 out of 5 stars poor photos
The book itself is good but when compared to the hardcover edition the poor quality of the photos is evident. Since I do not need to use these photos for my class it is not a major issue, but if you will be working directly from the book you might want to consider purchasing the hardcover.

3-0 out of 5 stars This was a required book for a college class!
This book has all the detailed information that you would expect a college school book to have. But nothing more! It's completely black and white, NO COLOR PAGES! This is 2006 lets get with the program here folks. Also, it was copyrighted in 1992, so to truly be current it needs an update badly. But once again it does have all the basic information that you would need too learn about remote sensing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book....lousy spine
The content of this book is fantastic, though perhaps a little dated now. A word of warning, though: the book will begin to disintegrate after opening it up about 50 times. Whatever glue was used to seal the spine was low-grade. Once the contiguous, 10-page chunks of the book begin detaching themselves from the center, it's a big mess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Land Use Planning and Analysis at it's best!
The planet EARTH houses well over 600billion people... and in the land on which they are housed under cloak of gases we call ATMOSPHERE are natural potentials for disaster. The same elements that form disaster are often the elements that provide us our sustenance. REMOTE SENSING and AERIAL INTERPRETATION allows us to plan HOW we use these landforms and elements WISELY.

The book provided by Avery and Berlin is a must have for any land developer or engineer who intends to maintain equilibrium with nature in his design. The book provides first hand knowledge of basic instruments and technology used in locating sources of precious commodities and for streamlining expense of damage/progress survey used in Agricultural and Energy careers. Acquisistion of the skill offered by this text enables VISION beyond the facade. It was one of many required texts in my own field of study.
