2-0 out of 5 stars Just a vocabulary list.
I was very surprised when I got this book. I was expecting some sort of outline of each chapter with important points and concepts, but it was far from that. This book is really just a list of vocabulary words and definitions from each chapter. There is no explanation of concepts whatsoever. I returned my copy because I don't believe that this book is worth the price for what it is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some things never change
Paul J. Curran rescued me from the remote sensing text chosen by my professor. I spent hours trying to understand certain principles, having no background in energy, reflectance, wave lengths, or any of the concepts necessary to understand how remote sensing works. Curran's book is direct, the index is helpful, and the diagrams make sense. With this supplement, my understanding was greatly enhanced.

Some things never change. Light and energy still do what they've always done, and no "new" information about how they act has been introduced since this book was written. There may be a few new satellites relaying information, but I was interested in the "principles."

This is a worthwhile book to add to a collection. ... Read more

Product Description

Since the late 1960s, various groups have investigated the influence of marine surface films on mechanisms dominating energy and mass transfer across the ocean/atmosphere interface. However, a compendium summarizing the state-of-the-art research in this field is still missing. The book fills this gap and transfers the accumulated knowledge to the scientific community. After a brief historical chapter basic chemical insights are presented, followed by theoretical and experimental approaches carried out in laboratory facilities. Air-sea interaction experiments are then described and finally, remote sensing applications with sea slicks and crude oil spills are presented.

Product Description
This book provides laser and lidar professionals and students with some basics learning tools in the field of lidar, laser instrumentation, and data analysis. It benefits also ordinary readers who are interesting in remote sensing with laser. The reader will first get an idea about the history of laser and introductory knowledge on the electromagnetic theory. Then the book familiarizes with basic important definitions of terms such as stimulated emission of radiation, population inversion, spontaneous emission, absorption, laser, lidar, maser, radar, water vapor mixing ratio, water vapor density, etc.... . Some basic equations used in lidar and some lidar techniques are also introduced. Water vapor is one of the most important atmospheric variables that play a key role in air quality, global warming, and climate change. Despite its abundance in the atmosphere, and its importance for the climate system, many questions regarding water vapor are presently unresolved. Raman Lidar system has an extraordinary ability to sense accurately water's high temporal and spatial structure in the atmosphere. This book is a review of the electromagnetic theory. It is finally an introduction to lidar techniques for the measurement of Nitrogen, oxygen, and water vapor in the atmosphere. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere
I got this book and I ahve to say it is absolutely aweful.

He basically lists a few formulas without any rigor, gives an extremely brief description of different types of lasers and such, and spends way too much time on a brief history of lidar which is again not very good.

The entire book, which is already small for a book falsely boasting a strong foundation from the bottom up in lidar, is double spaced and full of typos. It looks like some failed PhD student's thesis.

The book Elastic Lidar is far better and does exactly what this book claims to attempt. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Updated Second Edition to Reflect Software Capabilities
This book provides the reader with the knowledge and skills necessary to design, build, implement, operate and use spacial resource management information systems for the management of the physical resources of a region. As with most computer related books, the previous book of the same title went out of date and this second edition was required to correctly report on the changes that have occurred in the industry. This edition reflects the current state of the art.

Geographical Information Systems are basically visually oriented analytical tools that allow for the computer presentation and modification of graphical information. As a result, this book discusses the basic concepts of remote sensing using cameras, satellites, radar and other sources. There is then a detailed description of the kinds of processing that can be conducted on these data to produce the needed information. The book is general enough in nature to discuss the overall concepts of GIS software without being tied to a specific package.

The book is supplied with a CD-ROM that includes data, notes on applications and the web addresses for data analysis software. ... Read more

Product Description
Essential Image Processing and GIS for Remote Sensing is an accessible overview of the subject and successfully draws together these three key areas in a balanced and comprehensive manner. The book provides an overview of essential techniques and a selection of key case studies in a variety of application areas.

Key concepts and ideas are introduced in a clear and logical manner and described through the provision of numerous relevant conceptual illustrations. Mathematical detail is kept to a minimum and only referred to where necessary for ease of understanding. Such concepts are explained through common sense terms rather than in rigorous mathematical detail when explaining image processing and GIS techniques, to enable students to grasp the essentials of a notoriously challenging subject area.

The book is clearly divided into three parts, with the first part introducing essential image processing techniques for remote sensing. The second part looks at GIS and begins with an overview of the concepts, structures and mechanisms by which GIS operates. Finally the third part introduces Remote Sensing Applications. Throughout the book the relationships between GIS, Image Processing and Remote Sensing are clearly identified to ensure that students are able to apply the various techniques that have been covered appropriately. The latter chapters use numerous relevant case studies to illustrate various remote sensing, image processing and GIS applications in practice.

Product Description
Global problems require global information, which satellites can now provide. With ever more sophisticated control methods being developed for infectious diseases, our ability to map spatial and temporal variation in risk is more important than ever. Only then may we plan control campaigns and deliver novel interventions and remedies where the need is greatest, and sustainable success is most likely. This book presents a comprehensive guide to using the very latest methods of surveillance from satellites, including analysing spatial data within geographical information systems, interpreting complex biological patterns, and predicting risk both today and as it may change in the future. Of all infectious disease systems, those that involve free-living invertebrate vectors or intermediate hosts are most susceptible to changing environmental conditions, and have hitherto received most attention from the marriage of analytical biology with this new space technology. Accordingly, this volume presents detailed case studies on malaria, African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), tick-borne infections and helminths (worms). For those who are unfamiliar with this science, and unsure how to start, the book ends with a chapter of practical advice on where to seek hands-on instruction. The lessons to be learned from these studies are applicable to many other epidemiological and ecological problems that face us today, most significantly the preservation of the world's biodiversity.

Key Features
* Only book to provide a synthesis of complex biology, quantitative analysis, space technology and practical applications, focused on solving real epidemiological problems on a global scale
* Broad scope, with methods relevant to subjects ranging from biodiversity to public health
* Practical advice on relevant courses
* 24 pages of colour plates ... Read more

Product Description

Remote Sensing image analysis is mostly done using only spectral information on a pixel by pixel basis. Information captured in neighbouring cells, or information about patterns surrounding the pixel of interest often provides useful supplementary information. This book presents a wide range of innovative and advanced image processing methods for including spatial information, captured by neighbouring pixels in remotely sensed images, to improve image interpretation or image classification. Presented methods include different types of variogram analysis, various methods for texture quantification, smart kernel operators, pattern recognition techniques, image segmentation methods, sub-pixel methods, wavelets and advanced spectral mixture analysis techniques. Apart from explaining the working methods in detail a wide range of applications is presented covering land cover and land use mapping, environmental applications such as heavy metal pollution, urban mapping and geological applications to detect hydrocarbon seeps.

Audience:

The book is meant for professionals, PhD students and graduates who use remote sensing image analysis, image interpretation and image classification in their work related to disciplines such as geography, geology, botany, ecology, forestry, cartography, soil science, engineering and urban and regional planning.
