4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you stay in La Selva, Costa Rica
Nice compact book. The only trouble is that it is so specific to one little area that it misses species that may be just down the road or just less common in this area. Nice for a quick reference for common species but not as extensive as I would like. The keys are useful. It is not always easy finding a field guide with good keys!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great price
I took thisbook on a recent research trip to a preserve near La Selva, and used it daily. Not just a field guide with pretty pictures, this book contains a key to the species. Since it is specific to this area of the country, it cut down on the amount of material that had to be sorted through to ID organisms. I could quickly key out species without having to worry about whether or not this was the right area for that particular species. The photos were clear and beautiful, with different color phases and sexual dimorphisms illustrated. If you are traveling to this specific area of Costa Rica, this book is really useful. It's small, lightweight, easy to use, and CHEAP! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Me Want to Turn Over a Few Logs!
I miss the fun I had catching critters when I was a kid, and I always enjoy bumping into the various animals that show up in my garden. But as a recent transplant to Arkansas, I don't always recognize the species. I spotted this book at a local bookstore and took a peek. Then I bought it.

This is the best herptile guide I've seen. It has lots of info, lots of color photos, and lots of species. There are even color photos of larval forms and egg masses. If you have an interest in reptiles and amphibians, you'll find this book useful, even if you don't live in Arkansas. I may never crack open my North American field guides again.

And next time I go hiking, I think I'll turn over a few logs just to see what I've been missing.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is really great!
I got this book months ago, and have read the whole thing about two or three times!I absoloutly love it!It has helped me find out what reptiles I have caught.I definatly reccomend it to anyone who wants to know about reptiles.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite books!!!
The Golden Book on Reptiles and Amphibians is very well written, well illustrated, and is just one marvelous little book.
When I was a young boy, around First Grade, my mom (who was a librarian at the time) got me all of the different Golden Guides on nature, including the one on reptiles. I used to read this snake, frog, lizard book over and over again, and along with the other Golden Guides, it helped shape my life and my lifetime love of nature...especially for snakes...and lizards.
Today as an adult, I still go out to find and see snakes, lizards, frogs, turtles, salamanders, skinks....this little book was the impetus for a lifelong love of reptiles and amphibians.

I am also a writer (Allergy-Free Gardening, Birthday Boy, Safe Sex in the Garden, The Highway Naturalist, etc..), and a former science teacher, and I recommend buying and giving these books as presents to all children.
You might well strike a spark that will trigger a life long appreciation and fascination with nature.
This book might well also be interesting and useful as a first book on snakes for anyone with a budding interest in wildlife, lizards, fishing, nature. But as with all the Golden Guides....these books are wonderful tools to create interest in young kids.

For adults or teenagers I would recommend a reptile/amphibian book such as one of theGuides from Robert Stebbins, but for kids...the Golden Book is a darn good one to start with. Get each youngster his or her own book, and encourage them to write in the book, to make notes, to jot down dates as to when they first saw each species. This is a very fun, fine book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Guide book
Same book I had as a kid 50 years ago. It was one of my favorites. Now my grandson has a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Golden Guide for Younger Naturalists
The "Golden Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians" was another of the books in the Golden Guide series, edited by Herbert S. Zim, that influenced my early interest in natural history. The high quality color pictures, cheap price and handy size made this a natural for any youngster interested inthe natural world.Certainly reptiles and amphibians are fascinating to many (if not all) kids of any age.The illustrations are, like many of those from the series, pretty well burned into my brain because I would sit for an hour just perusing the book, while reading about such exotic creatures as hook-nosed snakes, snapping turtles, collared lizards or spade-footed toads. This book expanded my interest in reptiles, which had been initiated by the Ditmar books ("Reptiles of the World" and "Snakes of the World" - both now outdated, but to my young eyes just wonderful books).I was , however, actually more influenced in my choice of a profession by books on insects and spiders and went on to become an invertebrate zoologist.Even so, I will still always fondly remember this neat little book and the fascinating information on cold-blooded land vertebrates that I acquired through its use.

A great starter book for kids interested in herpetology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I think the Peterson First Guides are great, I have four different ones and use them all the time. The Reptiles and Amphibians guide has great pictures and they seem very accurate. While I haven't seen a large variety of species yet, those that I have seem right on.In fact, when I was a kid we rescued an eastern box turtle from the road (it had been hit and we nursed it back to health), and the picture in the guide looked just like it.These guides are not for professional ID-ing of species I'm sure, however, for the casual observer like me, they are perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbooks
I purchased 4 of these books ( all different) as gifts for mytwo nephews. I also purchased a magnifying glass for each of them . They are curious kids and really enjoy this kind of stuff. These books are full of information easy to read and understand, compact in size and just all around great books/guides. My husband and Ialso have a set of these books and have found them to beperfectwhen we want to look up something up. Like the pecular looking frog we found on our deck last summer or the snake the cat brought us. they are great for kids and adults. These guides are a real bargain too!!Highly recomend!

If you're a backyard or weekend wildlife observer, this is the perfectbook for you. Put it in your backpack, pocket, glove box or camper andalways be ready to identify! Product Description

The Handbook of Venoms and Toxins of Reptiles offers "one-stop shopping" to all biologists, biochemists, toxicologists, physicians, clinicians, and epidemiologists, and informed laypersons interested in the biology of venomous reptiles, the biochemistry and molecular biology of venoms, and the effects and treatment of human envenomation. This book examines the topic generally, provides an overview of the current taxonomy of these reptiles, explains the similarities and differences in the venom delivery apparatus in different groups of reptiles, reviews state-of-the-art knowledge about specific venom components and their action, and summarizes effects of envenomation and treatment in humans on different continents.

Produced by leading toxinologists, biologists, biochemists, and physicians from 12 countries, the book provides a broad, international perspective that bridges divergent areas in modern biology. A synthesis of current knowledge about venoms and venomous reptiles, it contains a wealth of illustrations, including an 8-page color insert, that present a view of reptile toxinology from the whole animal to the glands producing venoms to the molecular models and the mechanisms of actions of the toxins themselves.

The book provides a context for understanding the range of activities present in venoms and supplies detailed information on many enzymes and toxins found in them, bringing into focus the worldwide extent of the occurrence and complexity of human envenomations by reptiles. It explores the unique and interesting results produced by collaborations between specialists from very different fields and how they can stimulate new and continued interest in research on venoms and the animals that produce them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review/Overview for the Biochemist
This is a technical book written for the biochemist with an interest in natural products and toxinology. Highly recommended for researchers and those who have a strong background in biochemistry and an interest in venoms. This is an excellent review with each chapter written by experts in the field. Gives a pretty detailed and current description of the major toxins and enzyme classes found in snake venoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top Quality publication.
This publication provides an excellent balance of soundly researched data at several levels .The text is limited to toxicologists and biochemists etc,due to the depth of the information. I was looking for data relating to the Biochem of the toxins and an up to date structural representation as well as the filling that is a usual by line to such a publication ,it has all that and set out in an excellent manner. Recommend to all students of bio-toxins .Well worth its reasonable price for such quality reference text.

3-0 out of 5 stars overpriced and virtually identical to the first edition
the first edition of this book was published in 2003, and it only took 5 years to get a new one out.
I assumed therefore that much has changed, but it hasn't. For a very hefty price you get a book that is virtually identical to the previous one, with 4% new species, that are not treated in any depth.
So if you have the 2003 edition you don't need this one.
If you don't - it is a very good book about Central American reptiles

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly effective text
The quality of this book doesn't need an essay.Organization is great, picture quality is excellent, and species coverage and range (dot locality) maps seem very accurate.

Small details such as how to differentiate seemingly-identical spiny-tailed iguanas (via tail spine illustrations) and Norops (via two pages of dewlap photos) really round out the perfection in this book. It's expensive for a reason - it can be. ... Read more

Based on the work of Samuel Wendell Williston and Dr. W. K. Gregory, author and editor of the original title published in 1925, this volume consists of two major portions -- a structure-by-structure account of the reptile skeleton, followed by a classification of the various reptile groups based on osteological characters. Customer Reviews (1)

4-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on this subject in this field
Starting off as a mere revision of Samuel Williston's 1925 book and turning into a full blown rewrite, Alfred S. Romer's The Osteology of the Reptiles is still the most comprehensive book on this subject ever written. This book features 707 pages (excluding bibliography & index) ofinformation on the wide variety of osteological features found in thereptilia, with notes on how they evolved and their possible evolutionaryroots.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part, and by farthe most useful, is that on the osteology of all the known reptilia. Romerstarts off with a quick intro into the muscular, cardiovascular and nervoussystems of the reptilia along with how it affects the skeleton and thendives head first into the wide variety of osteology found in this amazinggroup. He divides the skeleton into various parts (e.g. skull, axial, limbgirdles etc.) and goes at it from there. To keep the book from becoming toohumongous, Romer focuses on representatives of each major order. What oneis left with is a well documented piece of work that makes a wonderfulreference book for those interested in reptiles and a must have for anybudding herpetologist, zoologist or vertebrate paleontologist.

Thesecond part of the book is Romer's classification and systematic groupingof all the members of the reptilia. He continues to be very extensive as hebrings relationships all the way down to the family level. Still, regardless of how hard he worked on it and how detailed he was, thisportion of the book is painfullydated. This is the inevitable fate of allbooks taxonomical as nomenclature and relationships continue to changefaster than books can be published on them. Romer himself knew that thiswould be a problem and admits to it ahead of time in the foreword of thebook. And even though Dr. LaDuke attempts to point out areas where nameshave changed and families have moved (such as the redistribution of theCotylosauria into many separate groups along with the abandonment of suchorders as Eosuchia and Thecodontia) even his changes will one day beobsolete (if they're not already). So the second half, regarding therelationships of the reptilia, is more of a historical piece than anythingelse.

There are some saving graces to this portion though. For instance, one can see the torture involved in trying to show evolutionaryrelationships using the standard Linnean taxonomic system. Another one isRomer's attention to detail. Now living in a time where creatures are showntheir evolutionary relationships to one another mostly through thesimplistic use of most recent common ancestor, it is nice to look back to atime when diagnostic features actually meant something. If one ever wantedto know what makes a python a python or a crocodile a crocodile, AlfredRomer's work will tell you that and then some.

Finally the forward of thebook really gives one an idea of just how much attention the reptilia isgiven as Romer astutely points out when he states that "I am impressedby the fact that we know less about many modern types than we do of manyfossil groups."

Nearly half a century later and this statementstill rings true. ... Read more

I was expecting an intelligent, informed checklist with pertinent information about the region's reptile fauna. Instead it reads more like a children's book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great basic field guide for Baja!
I agree with the review of Steven Mlodinow. The book introduction covers the following in a very basic way: Geography, Geology and Diversity in Baja California, Finding Reptiles and Amphibians, Venomous Reptiles, Conservation, Organization & how to use this guide. There is also a section called "Spanish names for amphibians and reptiles" followed by a brief glossary. Then follows the mainsection of the book "Classification and Species Accounts". There is also a "Selected References" section as well as a nice table of the amphibians and reptiles of Baja California, Mexico which is a taxonomic listing that also includes common names. I found this guide useful during my 2 excursions in Baja to quickly identify the amphibians and reptiles I came across.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Field Guide
How one rates this book is dependent on one's expectations. If you want an in-depth natural history of the reptiles and amphibians of Baja California, well this is not the book for you. If you want a book that will help you identify what you are seeing, this would be an excellent choice. And this is not to say that the book is devoid of natural history information, as the basics are included The photos vary from good to superb, with most in the latter category. I agree with a previous reviewer that more attention to subspecific variation (or labeling such) would be nice, but this is somewhat compensated for by giving the date and location of each photograph. Also, this volume is lightweight and easy to take on a trip to Baja, especially given how much information IS included; and the book is relatively inexpensive. I would consider McPeak's tome a must for those interested in identifying what they are seeing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pictures are great but Information lacking
I disagree with the above rating as that of a consumer. I do not believe Midwest Book Review can be considered a consumer.I am a consumer and I have this book. Although some of the pics are the work of one of the bestphotogs in herp photography (i.e., John Tashjian), many of the other, unattributed photos could have been sharper. For some species of lizards, both dorsal and ventral views were shown.I feel that many more speciesshould have had ventral views and comparisons between male and femaleanimals. This is a picture book, make no mistake. If you are lookingfor natural history information or range maps, this may not be the book foryou. But, since it is the only recent book out with color pictures, it canbe a valuable addition to a herp library.Another slight criticism isthe observation that no subspecific designations are used. The way thingschange in Baja, that may be a good idea, but then, down there, species alsochange fairly frequently.I do not think it would have hurt to put inpresently recognized subspecies. For instance, there are three subspeciesof zebratail lizards(genusCallisaurus) in Baja. Two are very similarto each other but the third, Callisaurus d. crinitus of the VizcaínoPeninsula, has some very unique adaptations and should have been noted anddepicted. There should have at least been a table of former names withthe relationship to the name used in this book. Many of the names used areproposed names and have not yet been accepted, Chances are the names willbe approved but still, the former names are quite familiar while the newones are going to take some getting used to. The Baja California Peninsulais a land of mystery and new discoveries. This book fills a void that hasexisted for years.I hope that more informational books are forthcoming inthe near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, reader-friendly, idenitification guide.
Color photos of each reptile and amphibian feature Baja residents, with families explained, habits explored, and natural history revealed. This will appeal to a wide audience with a regional interest in the Baja region, from travelers and natural history students to those who want an overviewof the creatures to be found in Baja. The details are easily read and thephotos are strong identification aids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST amphibian and reptile guide of Madagascar !
Without any doubt the best guide about the reptiles and ampibians of Madagascar.

In its third edition now, this book is evolving and becoming better and better with each edition. I allready had the first and second edition but the third is great !

The book has become a bit larger, all pages are of the same quality (first edition was made out of a sort of toiletpaper..) and more, lot more photos as well as newly discovered critters.
One of the great things about this book are that all photos are of animals in vivo, instead of the dead ones you see a lot in these kind of field guides.

Glaw and Vences started as real amphibian specialists and with each edition the reptiles blended in more and more and are now just as important as the amphibians.Which is great in my point of view.

Conclusion: A must have for any reptile or ampibian enthousiast and for anyone travelling to Madagascar with an interest in wildlife.

3-0 out of 5 stars an informative, but flawed guide
(This review is for the 1994 edition)
This book is still the most complete and authoritative guide to Madagascan herpetofauna I'm aware of. Unfortunately, its wealth of good information is badly organized and rather hard to use. For a paperback book it's quite pricey. I wasn't particularly insulted by the cost until the binding disintegrated after just a few openings. Despite its shortcomings, I wouldn't part with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Malagasy Endemism
This is the only English, mostly-complete field guide to the frogs and reptiles of Madagascar you can get.Not only that, but you get the bonus of some lemurs and fish as well! The pictures are adequate, descriptions are fairly complete, and user-friendliness is superb. If I would've gone to Madagascar without this guide, I would have been lost!Knowing what I was seeing in terms of frogs, lizards, snakes, and lemurs made the trip MUCH more enjoyable.
It is worth the cost just to be amazed by all the unique creatures of this island. ... Read more
