5-0 out of 5 stars good coverage of topics and clearly written
I needed a book giving a clear introduction to the basics of satellite ranging.Among all the books suggested, this one had exactly what I needed. The explanation was clear and at just the right level.Equations were sufficient to explain the math clearly without being too complicated for the general reader.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers Everything I Needed
I am just a programmer.I use some of the older, classic literature towrite algorithms to track low-earth satellites.I'm not a math major. This book is an excellent addition because it helps me to understand how to connect orbital concepts with the math.It is short and to the point. The book's construction quality is excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Perfect book, even if it's not completely up to date (not covering IERS conventions 2003). It's my reference book of satellite orbit determination.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is NO Satellite Orbits for Dummies.....
I found this book to be extremely well written with just the right mix of explanation and formulaes.

I bought this book in order to complete a project for a University assignment and the CD containing all of the source code in the book, made my life much easier. I could quickly whip up a working prototype of exactly what I needed.

I would recommend this to anyone for who was wondering how Physics and the laws of Nature relate to equations and programming.

To the authors, thank you for a wonderful book - bringing me up to speed in a few short weeks on a very complex subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Satellite Technology:A great Introduction!!
I really enjoyed this book, despite it's small size.Although somewhat outdated, I would say that 90% of the information provided was very helpful, and explains satellite technology in layman's terms, and has good graphics to assist in the explanations.Highly recommended for those just starting out in satcom.

3-0 out of 5 stars Satellite Technology: An Introduction
A useful text for those who need to know more about the user technology (ground) in sat-comms. It's a little dated and with a decidedly USA-centric bias but its relatively small size and friendly style more than compensate.

It's not really of use to those who need to know about the satellites themselves, much of what is said can be found in far more detail although in decidedly more expensive texts.

Its real plus is that you can learn an awful lot if you read the whole thing and you can do that in a weekend. You can't say that about Messrs Marel et al!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Intro to Satellites
An excellent introduction to satellite communications. I use this book constantly to provide non-engineers and engineers alike with simple answers to common questions. I hand this book out to new employees as well ascustomers so that we can speak a common language.

In addition, with theauthors permission I used this as the textbook to teach students aVo-Technical high school.

I highly recommend this book.SAW ... Read more

Product Description

A candid insider's look at the creation of the most advanced digital communications satellite of its time that sparked a revolution in the field of communications and helped spawn Ka Band systems such as Spaceway, Astrolink, Euroskyway, and others. Although created in the early 1980's, the ACTS program correctly forecasted demand for interactive services well ahead of the rise of the Internet and used a market-based approach for defining the needed technology.

The book provides a fascinating chronicle of the breakthrough events from the perspectives of the authors, who were intimately involved in every phase of the project, dramatically illustrated with scores of color graphics and photographs highlighting the hardware and the participants. Easy to read but with ample references for further research, it provides a compelling case study of a complex space system development project covering both the technical and managerial aspects. Because this material is not normally released for commercial systems, readers will obtain valuable insights into the world of high-risk technology and the role of government in sponsoring technology development for commercial systems.

Key Features:

- Dramatically illustrated with color graphics and photographs of key equipment and people, plus striking line diagrams of how the system was conceived and built

- Technical concepts explained in simple terms with no equations or formulas

- Includes extensive references

- Shows how to find money for new government technology programs

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulously documented and worthy .....
A few years ago after the incessant news concerning the American debacle during the Bush Administration in the region that was promulgated over prior throughout Western media in the same manner as its twisting of factual specificity by the earlier Clinton Administration's NATO bombing of Kosovo for, in my opinion, misguided and corrupt Realpolitik agenda for which I must highly recommend Edwin Brock's "Media Cleansing" as well as Francisco Gil-White's Historical and Investigative Research HiRHome for further insightful works on Civil wars in the former Yugoslavia. That said, I give Edmond Paris 5 out of 5 for this work as it documents the rather unknown genocide in the Balkans that had gone on under the sights of both Italian Fascists and German Nazi Regimes by their puppet Ustashi pseudo-government run by a collection of misfits, extremists, murderers and criminals all under the watchful eye - and documented approval - of the highest order of the Catholic Church: Vatican. Of course most Catholics did not actively take part and cannot therefore be blamed however one does honor Paris' study for the apparent collusion of numerous high ranking Church officials who instigated and carried out mass genocide of the Serbian Orthodox, Jews and Gypsy Peoples along with, a very much guided, schema of forced mass conversion. The few voices within the Catholic Church hierarchy that dared speak out were soon condemned to concentration camps or silenced via dismissal.More knowledge today has uncovered a collection of avenues and accomplice between the Vatican and the smuggling of Nazi, Fascist and Ustashi officials - and masses of confiscated wealth - out of Allied Occupied Europe to safe havens in the Middle East; Syria and Egypt specifically, USA, Canada and South America - to which the Israeli's located and abducted Adolf Eichmann in 1959.Apparently, at the time of this writings publication, many of the top level Ustashi murderers were living well and active "Croatian Nationalist" lives within the United States, Canada and other Allied Nations, unlike many Nazi murderers with some thanks to the Allied Governments and the various Jewish organizations activities, these Ustashi murderers never stood trial or answered for their crimes against 750,000 dead Orthodox Christian Serbs, thousands of Jews and Gypsies. Also at the time of the publication the Vatican had yet to supply the Serbs or the World in general acknowledgment or apology of its collusion, crimes and accomplice whereby covering up the best that could be done by supplying the mass murderers elevation and promotions within Vatican/Catholic hierarchy.A very good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars No wonderthis book is "out of print"
One of the great books written about Croatian genocide against Serbs and Vatican's involment in this holocaust. Over 250 catholic priests took part and even led Croats in bruttal extermination of Serbs from Croatia. This crime is hidden and remains hidden from public eyes since Vatican was so heavily and seriously involved. Will we ever see Avro Manhatan's book "Vatican's Holocaust" available on Amazon? I doubt it..... ... Read more

Cayden:

"This book is about a bad guy named Soundwave. He is a Decepticon robot. He didn't like how Optimus Prime, my favorite Transformer, worked with humans so he sent down some bad guys to destroy things and when the humans called for help he blocked it on the radio so the Autobots couldn't hear them.I didn't know if the Autobots were going to be able to help or not since they didn't know the city was in trouble! Some of the words in this book were a little hard and I didn't know what they meant but I liked the story because I like Transformers."

Product Description
This culmination of a fascinating seven-year photographic journey takes viewers through the countries and enclaves once held in orbit by the immense gravity of Moscow, the nucleus of the Soviet empire. Now each region is on its own in a chaotic political environment, sometimes without diplomatic recognition from neighbors, much less the international community. Abkhazia, an unrecognized country on the Black Sea, was once the natural pearl of the empire, where bellicose generals and productive factory managers came to relax. The spacecraft crash zones between Russia and Kazakhstan reveal a Soviet-inflected version of the entrepreneurial spirit. In Transdniester, a breakaway region of Moldova that survives by functioning as a giant black market for illicit traffic in all manner of goods, from leftover Soviet munitions to bootlegged booze, Bendiksen was expelled on the grounds that he was a "protagonist in an international spy ring." These 62 hauntingly beautiful and often arresting color photographs unsentimentally reveal the often grim circumstances in these half-forgotten regions, uniformly poor and polluted, and often politically unstable. We may not hear much about them today, but we will certainly hear more as the fall of the Iron Curtain continues to reverberate throughout the region. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Photographs
I bought satellites on a whim, as I had seen some of Jonas Bendiksen's work and been impressed. After viewing this book time and time again, he is now one of my favourite photographers. The use of colour and the interesting compositions are awesome. Very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was pleasantly surprised by this book.
As the title for this review states, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The quality of photography is outstanding and the black border presentation is quite effective.I also found the commentary illuminating, albeit a bit on the short side. But I must say that the subject matter is just fascinating.I have always been fascinated by the USSR/former USSR and Bendiksen's photographs do an outstanding job of conveying the quality of life that exists in those countries. That region has undergone some huge and traumatic changes in a very short period of time and this book captures the raw essence of those changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satellites
This book gives a very illustrated insight into the fringe of the former USSR. Extremely interesting to read and the photographs are amazing, very atmospheric.
The images of the crash zone for the Russian space program are my favorite, they're like weird movie-sets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully documented with a lyrical eye!
I've never written an Amazon review, but after finding this book, I want to say how much I loved it! Jonas Bendiksen takes a remarkable concept: the former Soviet Republics as "orbiting satellites held together by the gravity of Moscow" and through his photographs exposes the complexities of obscure regions in which he spent years traveling. It is beautifully documented with a lyrical eye. It is also a book that deserves many visits because the images evoke layers of emotions. The photographer is obviously passionate about revealing a collective truth that lies among the ruins of the former Soviet Union.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference guide
I borrowed this book from our local library and I like it so much I am ordering it. I am adding books to my library of meteorology, one at a time. Not being a meteorologist, there are of course upper limits on what I can understand or wish to learn. Fluid dynamics with differential equations is one of them.
This book is written for pilots. i am not a pilot but enjoy the mechanics of flying-approaches, frequencies, navigating, planes, airport administration, etc. Weather is important to pilots and Lankford devotes 8 chapters to it. See, what I have discovered is, every author explains a subject in a different way. Lankford's explanations of fronts, air masses, clouds, bring a new perspective for me. His three chapters-3-on satellite images and interpretation are unique and are alone worth the price of the book. He has some appendix chapters, but they are of little interest to me.

So, I highly recommend this book to pilots and weather "enthusiasts", because it gets hard to find information that is approachable
and not graduate level tombs.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok... nothing special
This book needs color pictures. The whole premise is to help pilots learn how to decipher sat. and radar images, but you can't tell much about the example pictures due to their quality and their lack of color. However, pilots really need to know this stuff, so something is better than nothing. Buy the used version - not worth "full price." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very interesting.
I made the switch. Bite me Comcast! I went satellite!!

I did not know what I was getting into, but I knew that I was going to switch to satellite. From what research I did on my own as well as experienced opinions of personal friends, I knew that it was probably the better option for our home. I purchased the book "Digital Television blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah the-Air" hoping for an upbeat introduction to the new technology and maybe some tips on useful accessories etc.

Blah.

The book totally does not hold my attention.

Dudek is probably still a teacher somewhere at a trade school or maybe even a college. His students may find this book handy as a study guide, but it is not a consumer oriented book. Dedek may be an unmatched expert at this stuff, but the book reads like a study guide for a course that is completed in one semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I bought this book for a friend who bought a new HD TV and became interested in how and why digital broadcasting works the way it does.He is a techno-nerd, so I would suggest this book only if you have a good basic understanding of electronics. He said it was the best book he could have gotten to begin his exploration of the subject.I would highly recommend this for someone who has a lively curiousity about digital broadcasting and wants to introduce it properly into the home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand with lots of information
This is a great book that comes to cover a void between too technical books that are addressed to experts and too simple books that have almost zero content. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that is curious about their home entertainment unit, and also to anyone that is interested in improving their experience using all the available options.

All in all a great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and a great read
Having no background on TV technology whatsoever, I found this book not only very informative, but also surprisingly easy to read, even with my complete lack of knowledge on the field. It's a must read for anyone who wants to know the finer details of television technology. With the mandatory change to digital TV less than six months away in North America, this book is now doubly useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of info
The book lots of detailed information and I found it pretty easy to read.Of the the details on how TV IRD's work was stuff I had wondered about, and I was happy to finally get some details.

There is a chapter in the middle that is really for super-technical hacker types, but otherwise most the the stuff was understandable.I don't have cable, so I skipped the chapter that only talks about that. I used the buying guide at the end recently to help buy a new receiver. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date info
I should have paid attention to the date of publication as there was no info on triple-head multi-satellite LNB dish reflectors. The book has some useful information but mostly, it is a hodge-podge of fact sheets and PR photos from manufacturers. Not worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a too much technical literature
When I decided to purchase this book , I was looking for a technical one , where I could learn about system characteristics , how does it work , installation , maintenance , etc. Chapter 6 , for example , has a lot of menu descriptions .Chapter 8 has around 40 pages describing DSS available programing. Those information are more suitable for the owner manual . This book is not updated , it mentions service providers that don't exist any more.Repeated information appears in different chapters .

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money-just republished manufacturer sheets
Chock-full of worthless promotional drivel, the author has the temerity to not only copy manufacturer spec sheets, but to copy them multiple times. Grab some DSS promo literature at the local Radio Shack... it'll be more upto date and free. ... Read more
