Satellite technology and applications
The book is unique and one of its kind in content and presentation. It is such a nice and comprehensive blend of technology-related and application-related aspects of satellites. I would like to highlight two special features. One is comprehensive treatment of non-communication applications of satellites. Second is simple and very easy-to-understand description of technological aspects related to satellite orbits, trajectories and launch procedures, which are otherwise considered as very difficult topics. This great book, writen by Dr. Taggart, is probably the single greatest source of information about weather sats, both low orbiting and geostationary. OK, but nothing new.
Exciting title.Grabs your attention, because it's the way of the future, but reads much like an overview, and doesn't provide much by way of new insight.

Excellent as a reference source.The book is fairly inexpensive, so it is worth the money.If you purchase it, you won't feel cheated.

Great intermediate intro to subject
This is a very well written book on digital TV for the intermediate student or reader. It steers a middle course between the more technical or professional level TV books, such as the well known Whitaker volume published by McGraw Hill, and the more basic books such as The Dummies guides. For me, it was just right since the more advanced books were a bit too hard for me yet, but the easier books were too basic.

The book is especially strong on the digital compression issues, and the chapter on middleware and operating systems is really exceptional, a subject that often isn't addressed as completely in some other volumes. The second to the last chapter provides a nice summary of the main features and differences between satellite, terrestrial broadcast, and cable digital TV.

It's still a fairly technical book, though, and you should already have some basic knowledge of what digital TV is and how the three main types, which are terrestrial, satellite, and cable-based digital TV, differ from each other. Obviously, there are many similarities, but they differ most in the use of different signal modulation techniques and the nature and extent of the error correction in order to best make use of the available bandwidth.

For example, obviously satellite and broadcast TV are most susceptible to multipath interference and other types of noise, hence the signal to noise ratio of these technologies is lower than cable. Cable has a much better signal (25 to 30 db instead of perhaps 6 db), and yet suffers from internal echoes due to impedance mismatches along the long segments of cable. This implies that broadcast and satellite TV need more robust and extensive error correction, which is true. However, satellite may reach areas too remote for typical cable.

The book also has several chapters dealing with the more technical aspects of compression, error correction, etc., for those who are interested. Overall, an excellent brief book (less than 300 pages), and it's also nicely bound on good quality paper in signatures so that the binding will hold up better over time and the pages won't fall out. ... This book questions the existence of anthropogenic global warming (AGW) and exposes errors of global warming advocates. It uses satellite global temperature measurements to show that the "late twentieth century warming" simply did not exist. What satellites do see in the eighties and nineties is that global temperature simply oscillated around a median value by half a degree Celsius, in synch with the El Nino- Southern Oscillation stages. Real warming began with 1he 1998 super El Nino but that did not last and was not caused by carbon dioxide greenhouse effect either. In 2007 we got some serious cooling while climate models using carbon dioxide theory insisted on relentless warming at the same time. If a theory predicts warming and we get cooling that theory as a scientific theory has failed and must be abandoned. Since the Kyoto Protocol and the proposed Copenhagen Treay depend on the correctness that theory to tell us what temperatures to expect and since that theory has been proven to be incapable of doing that both treaties must be abandoned. There is no scientific justification for them and the only thing that supports them is propaganda from the climate activist movement. ... Read more

Temperature Data: Satellite vs. Thermometer - Which is right?
The author has published in book form, what is apparently essentially a research paper that he wrote earlier that was rejected by both Science and Nature journals.It should be pointed out that both of these journals are firmly in the anthropogenic global warming camp, and research that does not support that view would usually be rejected by their editors.

The author has reviewed the satellite temperature data, accurate to +/- 0.03 degrees Celsius, in itself far more accurate than ground based thermometers, but the interesting thing he found was that the satellite data show no warming trend from 1978 to 2008, only an oscillation of temperature, cooling and warming, of 0.4 to 0.5 degrees, with a period of 3-5 years.The only exception was 1997 to 1999, which showed significant warming.The author suggests this was due to the appearance of a Super El Nino.He states that, except for that brief warming, the global temperature follows the normal El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) period and pattern, and that it is ENSO that determines the climate change, not CO2.He states that if there is no warming trend, then rising CO2 is not causing any warming.

It is a short, well-written paper, illustrated with easily read charts and satellite images.I believe this book adds in no small measure to the body of research.

Knowledgeable and reasoned
The author is knowledgeable about his area of expertise; satellite temperature data and the processes that are driving the normal (natural) fluctuations in global temperature. He describes how the traditional means of measuring global temperature with ground stations has been flawed (likely intentionally) and demonstrates how the satellite temperature data record fits the well known natural variability and occillations much better. An honest and successful attempt to let the pure science and unadulterated temperature data speak for us to give us a true sense of the recent global temperatures. Clearly, when politicians and big money get too involved with science it can morph into pseudo-science and become untrustworthy. The author rises above the fray to present us a thoughtful and well-reasoned book worth reading. ... Read more

Ham Satellite Handbook
This is a MUST have IF you want to talk thru the birds! I wish I had this book when I got started with Satellite's. A big TIME saver for old Extra's,(like me), or new hams too.

Essential for working with Amateur Satellites
This book is essential for anyone wanting to work with the Amateur Satellites.It covers the history of various projects, explains the modes of operation, and shows the equipment needed to talk with the birds.Like all the ARRL books, it is easy to follow and clearly written.The only problem I have with the book is that it hasn't been updated since 1997.It doesn't have good information on some of the newer spacecraft.As an example, it talks about the soon to be launched Phase 3D satellite rather than talking about the now orbiting AO-40 (ex Phase 3D) and some of the problems it is having.Still, the technology and techniques are very valid and good for anyone wishing to work with space communications.

In case your are thinking this is difficult to start in, I've had success transmitting to and receiving from the International Space Station using just a handheld transceiver (Kenwood TH-D7A) and either an attic mounted or handheld directional antenna.I've also heard voice from (but not transmitted to) the OSCAR 14 satellite with this same setup.You don't need an equipment setup to rival NASA in order to start with the aspect of the Amateur Radio hobby. ... A comprehensive resource on Jupiter
Oh, yes, there are several excellent books about Jupiter for the layman.But if you have a technical background and want to learn about Jupiter, why not get the real thing?And this book is indeed the one to get.It has an introduction, twenty-six excellent papers by noted experts in their fields, and a CD with some additional color images.It contains information discovered by the Voyager, Galileo, and even the Cassini missions, as well as from a variety of telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope.

The book starts out by addressing questions of Jupiter's origin and interior.A major question is the ratio of helium to hydrogen.That value has to be above the minimum set by cosmology (Big Bang nucleosynthesis), given that the high metallicity of both Jupiter and the Sun suggest that we're not dealing with primordial matter.And one would expect it to be less than the ratio for our Sun, given that the Sun has produced some helium by burning hydrogen.But measurements of this ratio seem a little low, and we're treated to some possible explanations.

Next, we learn about the Jovian atmosphere.An interesting question here has been the amount of water and its significance.And we learn about some of the photochemistry of the stratosphere.As the editors say, "if you like your hydrocarbons fricasseed and you like to dance under a strobe of X-rays, then Jupiter's middle and upper atmosphere is the place to be."

After this, we move a little higher up, to discuss Jovian dust, including Jupiter's rings.How thick are they?How dense?And are the gossamer rings really composed of micron-sized particles and smaller?We then are introduced to the outer satellites and the Trojan asteroids.

There are papers discussing the major satellites in some detail.We learn about Io, its tidal heating, and its volcanoes.And about Europa, including its tides and tectonics.There's material about Europa's Laplace mean motion resonance with Io and Ganymede.And a discussion of astrobiological issues: if Europa has liquid water under its crust, and if there are hydrothermal vents, it is possible that life exists there.There is a paper about the atmospheres of the satellites, and another about radiation effects on satellite surfaces.

Jupiter's large size and 10-hour rotation period are responsible for an immense Jovian magnetosphere, and the final papers in this book discuss various aspects of it.We learn about magnetospheric interactions with satellites.And about the Io plasma torus.And there is a paper on the dynamics of the magnetosphere.One fundamental question here which still has not been totally resolved is the process by which this magnetosphere manages to accelerate the Io plasma from basically a few electron volts to well over 100 thousand electron volts.And there is a fascinating paper about Jupiter's aurora.

The final paper is on the Jovian radiation belts. Issues include the basic electron energy spectrum in the inner radiation belts and the wave modes that may be present there.And there is a practical issue as well: if we don't know what radiation fluxes we're facing, it will be tougher to design the next deep space probe to Jupiter.

If you are interested in studying any aspect of the Jovian system, this book is a good place to start.I highly recommend it.

CORONA - Where it all began...
I've read this book, I've read the "online" version, I've read the "unedited" version - this one by far has the most utility.I've written other reconnaissance satellite book reviews on Amazon.com, and this book does not cover the same type of information that the other CORONA histories do.In this particular case, coming from the "horse's mouth", this history is written as many intelligence documents are: dry, lengthy, and just plain boring... but they are original source documents from the CORONA program.

One reviewer stated this can be read online for free - very true, but any true reconnaissance satellite buff has a print copy on their bookshelf for the times when the Internet is not connecting, or download times are too slow... but especially for the hand-written notes they'll put in the margins when comparing one book/source with another.I've tried printing out the online document twice... lots of mess with paper hole punches and plastic binding. I think I'll just bite the cost of the book and shipping for a complete document.You'd be wise to do the same.

The CIA Provides This Identical Publication Online for Free!
There isn't much to add to what previous reviewers have said - this is good first-hand archival material about the U.S.'s early satellite surveillance program - the Corona. The two-star rating isn't because the material is not good, but to call attention to the fact that it need not be bought - the identical publication is provided online for free by the CIA under the title "Corona: Between the Sun and the Earth." I can't provide a link, but a Google search should turn it up without problem.

This book from the CIA archives series is interesting for a historian or a student of politics and the cold war.Not too much technical information but the "top secret" memos and photo intelligence show a start to the systems that operate today.

Declassified Data from our Time
When I was in high school in 1960 the United States launched the first Discoverer satelite was launched. It was, of course, launched for purely peaceful, scientific purposes.

This book talks about the CORONA project which had the public cover name 'Discoverer.'

Years later I was selling high-tech equipment to the Government. The buyers were organizations with initials like N-PIC and NRO. Even the initials were secret, and the names National Photographic Interpretation Center and National Reconnaissance Office were so far into the 'black' that they weren't even mentioned.

This book says that the information in it has been cleared for release by these very organizations.

Once in a meeting someone mentioned 'Keyhole.' I said, "What." He shut up really quickly.

Most of this book consists of pages that were marked "TOP SECRET - TALENT - KEYHOLE." TALENT is imagery. KEYHOLE is the camera system (designed by Polaroid).

I later was talking to an Air Force pilot who had been transferred to Hawaii. when he got there he asked another officer what the deal was. He was told, "Oh, we fly out to a spot in the pacific and we use a hook system on the plane to catch a parachute out of the air that is lowering a capsule that has been ejected from a satellite up in space." What a wise ass, he thought until he found out that that was what they were really doing.

The CORONA images are now available for anyone to use. But now their biggest utility is to examine what has happened over the forty five years since they were taken.

Good information, terribly written
First, this book is tiny. Only 77 pages, including 10 for the glossary. And those pages are only about 5.25 x 7.75 inches. Use Amazon's Look Inside feature to get a feel for the wide spacing on those pages. I've had larger user manuals.

Second, the writing and presentation are so bad that they are a huge distraction. The first word of the book is misspelled. The first illustration is a grainy screenshot with arrows childishly drawn in. It's hard to find a page not marked with typos and grammar that is awkward at best.

Third, the book is partly a promotion tool for the author's web site. There are repeated references to what the author can do to help startup stations, and some discussion of fees.

But down deep, there are signs of an author who might really know how this really works. He lays out what pieces are necessary for a satellite TV station as well as alternatives in cable, over-the-air, and internet broadcasting. He also includes ballpark price estimates for each of these pieces. And he even adds bits of wisdom, such as choosing a satellite that already has direct-to-home viewers so your new station will have a larger initial potential audience.

For the quality of presentation, this book is terribly overpriced. But if that information is worth the money to you, it's available. Just be sure to use Look Inside so you'll know what you're getting.

It was Good for a General Overview
Amazon review of TV startup book : this book helped me go from a dream/vision to and actual plan . I agree with the author there's no way to tell you everything but this is a good resource guide . it gives you a general idea and really it's the only resource guide like it out there .so I enjoyed the book and wanted to give my opinion no one perfect as far as grammatical errors the only perfect book is the bible .

Useful Information
I found this book to be very useful and detailed. Though there was a lot of misspelled words, I still was able to get the knowledge I needed from it. I wish there were more books related to starting a network and all the projects covered in this book. I am implementing some of the procedures as I write this.

Don't wast that amount of money because I have been recharging TV Station and TV Shows and this didn't help me at all just the amount you spend over again and I would take it and through it an my trash can I don't have hatred to the author but he is a good writer but I don't think he knows any thing about this subject and it is to bad that the Internet doesn't offer more information I have been wanting start a TV Station for all my life and have a TV Show I've emailed all the people off of the website of TV Station and they don't write me back!
