A must have for satellite players
Before you enter a major poker tournament, you have to qualify. "The Championship Hold'Em Satellite Strategy" is a guide for poker players who are just at the threshold of the poker big leagues and are seeking to earn their way up by winning some big money at these satellite games. Covering everything from limit to no-limit hold em to other satellite variants, Envoy and Daugherty impart their own championship wisdom, making "The Championship Hold'Em Satellite Strategy" a must have for satellite players.

About as bad as it gets
I'm probably in the minority when it comes to McEvoy books. I really try to give him the benefit of the doubt, and sometimes I think he produces a really good poker book when others don't. A great example of this is "How to Win No Limit Holdem Tournaments" he wrote with Don Vines.

This book, however, isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I purchased it in hopes of getting some valuable advice on how to fashion a strategy for satellites. This would include a detailed discussion about bankroll requirements, low blind strategies, and most importantly bubble play. The bankroll topic gets touched on very vaguely, there are some general play guidelines that get better coverage in his other books, and there is little to no good consideration of how to play when approaching the bubble of a satellite. The final and worst flaw of the book is its passing mention of online satellites. Considering online satellites are so popular these days, you would think a 2007 redo of his earlier books on satellites (which I have not read but imagine cover the same territory) would spend more time on this aspect.

Not talking extensively and proficiently about online play and the bubble aspect of a satellite would be like writing an instructional book on running for public office without mentioning advertising and filing deadlines. I was highly disappointed in this book (co-written with Brad Daugherty, to spread the blame equally), and figure I could probably write an improved product overnight if I really set my mind to it. Not completely up-to-date, but a real good textbook on Digital Satellite Communications
Unfortunately, the 1997 edition of the book is only a reprint of the edition from 1983. Thus, it is not really up-to-date, especially with regard to current (higher order) modulation techniques used in digital satellite communications (like e.g. 8PSK).
However, as an introduction to both the theory as well as practical aspects of digital satellite communications, I find it an irreplaceable textbook.
For example, it is ideal to understand the meaning and significance of eye diagrams and how to interpret them.
I also like the very good explanations on Nyquist's theorems very much. Pulse shaping and all its implications is also very well described.
Also the impact of nonlinear amplification on digital modulation techniques is uniquely well described.
The chapter on error detection and correction coding very well describes the relevant aspects.
Also the concepts of regenerative systems are very well introduced.
There is a lot of figures as well as measurement screenshots that contribute to the practical aspects. The writing style is very likable and easy to read. ... Read more

Satellite Communications for the Masses...
Mr. Dennis Roddy's book is an amazing introduction to the daunting field of Satellite communications.His layout and explainations are easy to understand, for both amateurs and experts alike. This is a great introductory book for any budding satellite engineering or someone interested into the "hows and whys" of satellites.

The inclusion of problems and exercises also extends the flexibility of this book for use as a TEXTbook for undergraduate or graduate satellite engineers. Even if you're not a student, the problems will give your grey-matter a workout. Buy it, if the price suits you.

Complete Garbage
Roddy should be ashamed of this publication.As a third edition textbook, one would hope the that numerous typos and VERY NUMEROUS mathematical operation errors would have been corrected by now.Roddy switches symbols from example to example, sometimes even within the same example!!!!Mathematical constants such as the speed of light, circumfereance of the earth, etc... are very often wrong.After reading 10 chapter's of this book, I have learned not to take any of Roddy's published standards at face value and I google them all for accuracy.This is very hard text to learn from unless you already know the 3-4 synominous terms that Roddy might use to explain the principles he is trying to explain.There is also a lot of "poof" calculations, where everything is thrown into mathcad and a result pops out.Not a good textbook for beginers or intermediates.

Good overall, but slow reading
As most text books usually are, this book is slow reading. However, it is very thorough and covers the subject completely.

Good Concepts, Bad Mathmatics
While the book covers a wide range of topics and does a fairly good job at introducing the reader to satellite communications; there are many glaring errors contained in this edition.
Many of the equations given are incomplete or simply wrong.Many of the chapter problems have similar problems and nearly every section has incorrect chapter answers given in the back of the book.
Professionals with a grasp of the material may find the book useful however students and those new to the material will have trouble following the mathematical concepts due to misleading equations and incorrect examples given throughout the book.

Roddey; very good intermediate level book.
This book is very suitable for either an undergraduate EE student, or an interested laymen with modest communications knowledge (i.e. HAM radio, etc..).Roddey's writing style is fairly clear and crisp, and other reviewers are on the mark.

The technical content is fairly thorough for introductory
to intermediate purposes.However, this is definately not a "reference" or "bible" type book; nothing too exotic is contained therein.

The book has some nicely written chapters on general communications theory (i.e. channel capacity, etc..),
however, the content and treatment is skimpy.
If your interested in satellite communications but
don't know much about die-hard communications theory,
you'd be better of getting a companion book specifically
for that purpose [i.e. Sklar or Proakisl; both authors
have books called "Digital Communications"].

All in all, the book delivers what it promises and is
worth the price... Probably one of the top 4 books to
get on Satellite Communications... Also look into
[Timothy Pratt book; Gerard Maral book; and also Tri T Ha for those looking for a much more advanced book]. ... Read more

Cute little book of Google Earth oddities
This is an impulse purchase book, something within easy reach of the cash register. That said, it's quite good, though most (perhaps all) of the sites are mentioned in various Google Earth oddity web sites. Still, it's a good gift book or (small) coffee table book.

Worth Viewing
This book was way more entertaining than I orpginally expected.The sights are really cool but the star of the book is the quirky, clever commentary.Not only do you get a description of what you are looking at, ther is usually a great "what if?" or "did you know?" story as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.It makes great guest room reading material as there is a little something for everyone.

Look it down
This is one of those books you see loitering near the cash register in book shops, which you pick up and on a casual flick through the pages buy it (wise folk, of course, note the title then order it cheaper online from Amazon).

I thought it was well worth the money.Now you can see a whole load of quirky shots of the planet that until recently really weren't possible and impressive quality, too.What I particularly liked was the concentration on the man-made world rather than the natural world.Here you can see a Stealth bomber on the runway at Edwards Air Force base, the Prophet Mosque, Medina, Saudi Arabia or hundreds of cars stored on a runway at RAF Bedford in England.

Mixed in with not normally seen photos there are plenty of offbeat sights that clearly would never be appreciated at ground level, like a huge rabbit on Mount Colleto Fava in Italy, designed by a bunch of artists from Vienna or a giant dead cowboy floating of the coast of Australia.I know that's a kind of vague location but all the images have precise co-ordinates on each page so you can find them yourself.

Although the book plugs Google Earth it might be worth checking out the same place on MSN Bing, where a bird's-eye view is sometimes available.In many cases both sites use the same image source.For instance both have the same scan of the world's tallest man-made structure the KVLY-TV mast at Blanchard, North Dakota shown on page 134. Factoid Time: the mast is 2063 feet high and the structure incorporates an electric elevator to allow (brave!) engineers to get to the top for periodic maintenance.

There is a spin-off to using the book because when you check out the sites on Google Earth you'll find that curiosity will get the better of you and something nearby will make you zoom in for a closer look and suddenly another hour has gone!

Captured Well
As someone who worked at the 'old' OSC during the time that this book covers, I knew a lot of the characters portrayed here and am acquainted with the Orbcomm story. It's not only accurate but it also tells a lot moreabout the engineering team and the management of the project than mostpeople in the company knew at the time. Some people fault the book for onlycovering the time period to the '95 launch, but for the three criticalyears of the start-up's story, he captures every significant facet. I'msure some engineers might not be happy with how they're portrayed, but thisis not a technical book. As a story about entrepreneurial guts and theessence of engineering it's one of the best. The recent award from IEEE washighly deserved.

Beyond Nerd Chic...
One of the most inspiring business books of the past year tells how a little company full of big ideas, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., got into the business of putting commercial satellites into space. InSilicon Sky: How One Small Start-Up Went Over the Top to Beat the Big Boysinto Satellite Heaven, author Gary Dorsey chronicles the progress of a pipedream as it has evolved into a company with 1998 revenues of $734 million.Orbital founder David Thompson gave Dorsey unfettered access to thecompany's inner workings -- from the beginning of its efforts to design acommercially viable communications satellite in 1992 through the firstlaunch in 1995. The incomplete and microscopic look at Orbital
Having worked at Orbitalduring the period this book covers, I was shocked at the inconsistency throughout this book.The author writes as an authority on Orbital, but in reality, he has had a very small slice ofinsight into what went on during that time.Critical events affecting thecompany as a whole which almost everyone at the company would know aboutdid not show up in this book.For instance, two highly publicized failuresof the Pegasus Rocket which occurred prior to the flight of Orbcomm werenot even discussed. These failures definitely had some impact to theOrbcomm project. When you talk about Orbital, you talk about an end to endspace company. That includes building the satellite, launching it, andproviding the infrastructure to control it.The attempt was made atgetting this across, but it really did not do justice to that topic.Thebook should be described as the incomplete history of the design of asatellite, not a history of Orbital.I do have to say that managementpersonalites were described rather accurately. The engineers in the storyare really depicted as an inexperienced bunch of kids who came right out ofschool with their "license to learn" (degree) and were directedto design a satellite system with nothing but their egos.Quite a bit ofthe book describes the long hours they worked and the stress involved ingetting it done.This wasn't a superhuman abnormality in the engineeringworld at Orbital, as the author would lead you to believe.He could havetold us about it in maybe 3 sentences, not 300+ pages. With that out of theway, the author could have brought this history of Orbcomm into recenthistory, instead of stopping before the constellation was launched.Insummary, I have to say this book was a big disappointment.It doesn't dojustice to Orbital or provide a consistent picture of the Orbcommconstellation development.

Disjointed, poorly written, and disappointing.
I agree completely with the reader from Monument, CO. This book was very disjointed and poorly written. The only favorable reviews I see on this page are from people involved in the satellite business. One five starrating comes from a guy who has not read the book! This book pales incomparison to one of my favorites, "The Soul of a New Machine",by Tracy Kidder. The characters in Silicon Sky are sketchy and at timessuperficial. For example, all we really learn about Grace is that she singspop songs while walking and loves to get in the face of the contractmanufacturers - even though she was apparently an engineer of someimportance. Dorsey also does a rather poor job at documenting how varioustechnical obstacles are overcome. How exactly was the "last greatobstacle", the problem with the satellite's batteries overcome? We'llnever know. The last thing Dorsey talks about is some experiments with somemysterious shielding material. Did the material work? Or did the engineershave to come up with something else? Instead we are treated to coverage ofengineers howling when they found out their board does not work because theMCU is placed wrong. I've designed boards for embedded systems for years.The only time I've had an error of this nature I found I had mislabled theboard's silkscreen. Takes a tech about three minutes to fix with a hot-airrework station. Sorry, I really wanted to like this book. But it appearsthat Dorsey does not have enough technical expertise to determine therelative importance of projects and engineers to really make this aninformative and entertaining book.

Accurate portrayal of people and technology
It is almost invariable that stories that I have personal knowledge of are conveyed with glaring errors and omissions.I am happy to say that Gary Dorsey's book is a notable exception.

I joined Orbital in 1996 and workedon the subsequent Orbcomm constellation, which started after the completionof the book.Of the principals who worked on the original Orbcomm andstayed for the constellation development, Mr. Dorsey captures the characterof each with incredible precision.Mr. Dorsey also gets the technicaldetails right.He has a real knack for picking up how engineers talk toeach other and how technical problems penetrate their equilibrium.

Myonly issue with the book is that it's episodic in nature and fails tofollow specific technical problems and their human actors to resolution. ... Read more

Does not live up to its misleading title ....
I bought this book with the premise to learning about Core-Satellite asset allocation technique. However, as I explain below, I was mislead and disappointed.

The chapters in the book are:
- A Core-Satellite Appraoch to Portfolio Management
- Quantitative Finance
- Core Equity
- Core Fixed-Income Management
- Satellite Bonds - High Yield and Distressed Debt
- Management of Currency Fluctuations Associated with International Investments
- Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities
- Hard Assets
- Finding Value in Small Stocks
- Risk Measurement of Investments in the Satellite Ring of a Core-Satellite Portfolio
- Indentifying and Adopting Best Practices for Institutional Investors

As you will notice, of the 11 chapters in the book, only 1-2 are dedicated to the actual Core-Satellite portfolio allocation technique. The balance of the chapters are allocated to explaining the different asset classes, general risk-return nuances and some practical issues to be borne in mind.

This is my main grip with this book. There are umteen books explaining each of the asset classes. I did not buy another book for that. Also only a chapter describing as asset class is hardly enough to go out and actually invset in the asset class.

At best, it expands your context, making you aware of the different asset classes to be included in the Core and in the Satellite portions of the portoflio. At worst, it is a waste of time and paper!

I would have much rather preferred the book to have focussed on the following issues:
- What criteria to use to allocate an asset either to the Core or Satellite portion of the portfolio
- How to first construct the Core portfolio
- How to the systematically add Satellites to the Core portfolio and the measure the impact of these additions
- How and when to move an asset from the Satellite asset class to the Core asset class
- How do you do portfolio allocation on the Core and Satellite classes individually as well as a whole.
- etc. etc.

The News CAN be fun
Satellite Night News is one of the most outrageously funny scifi books that I have ever come across, and I have come across many in my time.However, some of the humor contained in this novel is not suitable for young children, but you adults may find it quite amusing.
