I live in Japan and have been working on development of semiconductor process technology for ten years. First, I bought the Dr. Grove in Japanese edition when graduate student ,and have been making the best of it , which made me again buy this English edition through amazon.com.(The English edition is not available in Japan)
This book begins with an introduction of process technology(Epitaxy, Oxidation, Diffusion) and followed by the device technology, whileall other textbooks begins with device technology of transistor such as pn junction, MOS physics ,Bipolar Physics. This is because, I think, Dr.Grove puts a great importance on process technology and I never read this book again and again without finding something new and important in the chapter 1,2,3 on the solid state technology.
This book is worth while buying and , I recommend that semiconductor-bound students should study this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a low-level undergrad book, but great for graduate study
Shur's book tends to present subjects more in-depth than most device physics texts. For example, he will point out (as in van der Ziel's older texts) that the generation rate in a diode space charge region is not uniform, and so when he models things like the space charge region ("n=2") dark current density contribution of diode leakage current, his expressions will be a little more complex than the standard "q ni w / tau" type given in most texts. As another example, instead of just giving plots on how mobility varies with doping, he derives the ionized impurity scattering models that explain this effect, as well as various phonon scattering mechanisms, etc. These points are best appreciated in a second course on semiconductor devices more than on the first go-around. I think his treatment of basic semiconductor physics is very good and is oriented towards the device engineer. I think his development of microwave type devices and effects is considerably more in depth than for optical devices. However, even the minimalist optical device chapter is still pretty reasonable for a textbook, I just think it is at a lower level than his other parts of the book.

I give a thumbs down to this text. Its very hard to read and not laid out well. The sections are not clearly outlined and important formulas not highlighted. There are also numerous discrepencies in the subject matter. All in all, it left me more confused than anything when I was reading it. Unfortunately it was picked by our professor for a graduate level solid state physics class and he admitted that he didnt go through it thoroughly when he picked it. ... Read more

This book is actually much more than an introduction. It is one of the best books I could find on semiconductors.
It is very well documented, very rich. It reminds the theoretical bases in a very relevant and accurate way. It presents a lot of practical aspects (the given information is often very difficult to find in the literature). It gives a lot a numerical examples.
The points I really appreciated in this book :
- I could not find any error (which is not very usual when you read carefully a technical book)
- you can read every chapters and you do not need to find complementary information in other books to have a clear understanding : everything is in the book
- it gives you a very deep and practicle understanding of semiconductors
For example, a whole chapters is dealing with pn junctions. It does not only give you the bases that you can find in EVERY book on semiconductors. It gives you these bases in a very clear, accessible and accurate way. AND it treats many additionnal aspects that are neglected in most books : Zener breakdown, high-voltage effects, parasitic capacitances (high frequency behavior), very narrow diodes, consequences of semiconductors defects in real diodes, etc... Another chapter is devoted to Schottky and other kinds of junctions.
This book is very practical, accurate, and is almost an encyclopedia. Maybe I will buy it.

there are few problems in this book.This book may be good for a graduate level students.but it is far advanced for an introductory course.First, author did not explain very sign in an equation.it seems author expects readers to know each signautomatically.I feel like I need to go over the book in order to find what the sign means.second, in the text, author mentioned about wave function.and he gives a brief explaination about it.In my opinion, a brief introduction is not enough.he should also include a complete reference in the book talking about wave function.Thrid, and the worst, author did not give a clear explaination for example.It is not step by step.Reader needs to be very intelligent to apply and understand the approach in example.In later part of problems, he gives a question that he did not really mention about it.I always feel the best book is a book that is most clear and comprehensible.This book is not. ... The third edition is out of print. The fourth edition, with 775 pages, has just appeared. The book has been updated, many references to recent developments, additional problems and their solutions have been added. The price has remained almost the same!The book should serve as a textbook for a course on semiconductor physics. The authors hope it will be as well received as the previous editions and reprints.

I didn't get very far with this book, as it is well beyond my level of familiarity.It is very math intensive, and requires a sound foundation in the topic.I'm not too sure I understand why it's called "Fundamentals of Semiconductors", I might suggest "A Very Intense Treatment of Semiconductors".This is probably a valuable reference for the clever.

This book is an excellent reference book on semiconductors in general. The physics behind semiconductor theory is discussed very well, however, if you are looking for a book regarding semiconductor devices or electronics, this is not what you are looking for.

One advantage of this book is that it contains a fairly large section for "group theory", if you are using it in your studies.

Electronic, transport and especially optical properties of semiconductors are mentioned very extensively and clearly. There is also a whole chapter on photoemission, which is very useful. The concept of quantum confinement is addressed independently with illustrative examples.

If you are interested in semiconductors and want to buy "one" book which you can use and consult all the time, this is the book you need. The authors are some of the best in the World on semiconductors.

I'm a Ph.D on physics, I read this book from page to page and worked out the problems.
This is an excellent book on the physics of semiconductors, NOT on semiconductor devices! The text is well written. The physical concept is clearly explained, mostly with a diagram or a graph. The formulae are carefully deducted without wasting too much time and space. I must add a few words on the problems. From all the physics textbooks I've read, only Claude Cohen-Tannoudji's Quantum Mechanics book is comparable. Those problems usually are about the the formulae, such as k.p. perturbation method and Luttinger Hamiltonian, etc., appeared in the main text but its detail is not appropriate there. The problems are by no means easy. Actually, some of them are really hard. For example, it took me a lot of time to work out the 6 by 6 k.p. perturbation matrix! In the process of working out those problems, I had a better understanding on the computational physics. You don't see that in a normal textbook!

The references are the classical or landstone papers about a specific subject, very good for further research.

In summary, this is an excellent textbook, if you want to study it hard.

A junior at Ohio State, I must admit that this is the least effective textbook I have ever purchased.The majority of the material is in paragraph form, which is difficult to comprehend for readers used to the typical formula, short description, and diagram style.Rarely does the book remind the reader of important material covered previously, which forces the reader to frequently search for information by flipping back and forth to understand the material.This book is also littered with errors.I strongly advise against using this book.

If you have no knowledge of semiconductors and you want to learn this is THE book. Currently I am using it for my undergraduate course in semiconductor devices and its explanations and presentation of material is wonderful.

I really enjoyed the introductory chapter and supplement on quantum mechanics.It goes through just enough of the shroedinger equation so that you will have a feel for what is going on.

As a junior in college studying semiconductors, I can attest that this book has been enormously helpful in my studies, and much better than the required text.

Concepts are presented in a clear way that's easy to understand, with in-depth explanations and many very helpful examples and analogies.There are many well-done diagrams that make visualizing the concepts easier (as would be expected).

One other neat thing about this book is that it's organized in a way such that a lot of the detailed derivations and other more in-depth sections are clearly labled so that if all you want are the basic concepts, you don't have to be bogged down by advanced material, which can be returned to later for a more advanced understanding. ... Many good "history of science" books have limited insight into the subject matter because the author has not worked actively in that field. In contrast, Orton has worked on semiconductor R&D for many years, and has written many technical papers and technical monographs (two books I am aware of with P. Blood on semiconductor characterization). I am not an expert on the history of semiconductors, but Iwork in the field and I believe Orton has written a good history of the semiconductors that those who work in the field should find interesting. I would compare it with E.T. Bell's "Men of Mathematics" in terms of insight into the technical areas, although Bell's book has many more interesting accounts of the personal lives of the mathematicians. Bell's book is also very readable for the non-mathematician, whereas Orton's book may be a little too complex in most spots for a non-scientist/engineer. Orton's book is great at giving simplified accounts of a great many complex semiconductor physics and device topics. You will not be able to design aquantum cascade laser after reading his book, but you will in a few minutes get some qualitative (and for many topics even semi-quantitative) idea of what it's all about. ... If your aim is to review the main concepts and refresh your memory of semiconductor devices this book is excellent. Not a book for beginners in the area as it is heavy on equations but the main concepts are dealt with clearly and the many illustrations are quite helpful.

This is terrible text.I am currently studying for a midterm and there are no examples and the authors write at a level that would not be acceptable for high school.The material is hard enough, but this book makes understanding it just that much more difficult.I hope the only schools that actually use this text are the two where the authors teach.I bet the good review was left by one of the authors.

Okay, maybe I'm just dumb, but this book barely has any examples besides the few problems at the end of each chapter. The book is full of equations and not enough explanation. I would not recommend taking this class or buying this book. Of course, if you're an EE student at UC Davis, this class (EEC140A) is required. So, tough luck. All I can tell you is... don't slack off. Attend the lectures, and don't fall behind. I found the materials to be pretty difficult. There's no way around it. Study.
