I work in data communications and until I read this book I found the folks at the phone company baffling.

This book captures well the technical culture of the phone company right before the Internet took off.

A lot of really great explanation of how things like analog modems work- with a lot of great pictures.

This book covers physical, information theoretic, and electronic issues in data communication.While the book is a bit dated, the classic material really hasn't changed that much.Pierce and Nolls give a masterful treatment of this material at an introductory to intermediate level.If you are looking for a book packed with equations and proofs or a book devoid of such things you will be disappointed.Rather, the book is heavy on qualitative understanding, with some analysis and equations following from the qualitative understanding.

When I got this book, I picked it up in a bargain bin, and thought that it was worth a ...gamble that it might have some content (it looked a little too accessible, not deep).After reading this book and Pierce's (same author) Introduction to Information Theory: Signals Systems and Noise, I have a new appreciation.Pierce is the kind of guy who can get a point across, and give an understanding of some deep concepts.This book is great, and I'm really glad I have it.

After finishing a course on DSP I found this book used for $8 and after thumbing through it for a few seconds decided to pick it up. In retrospect, this book was not even worth $8, and I would have given it 0 stars if that was possible.
First, the book has many typographical errors. It is clear that the author has a less-than-perfect grasp of English, as he felt compelled to place "the" before every noun. Also, many graphs are mislabelled or referred to incorrectly in the text. The editor of this book must be blind.
Secondly, the book is just plain terrible. It does not simplify digital signal processing at all. The parts of the book I was especially looking forward to were the chapters on the Laplace, Z, and Fourier transforms, as I had only really used Fourier so far in my coursework. I learned absolutely nothing about Laplace or Z transforms. The author provides the formulas for these transforms and does not further explain how they work or discuss the domains to which they transform. Fourier transforms are only slightly better-handled, and the author never mentions the Fourier series or FFT. He also does a very poor job of explaining why the transform works and what is different in the frequency domain.
I would say that this book is a joke. It contains almost no useful information and I would not pay more than $2 for it. I think perhaps the other reviewer of this book read something else and mistakenly placed his 5-star review on the wrong page. Trust me, this book is not worth it.

It is a nice book about signal detection. The content is well organized. It combines application with theory and put complex theoretical staff in appendix so it is easy to follow. In particular, I like the beautiful language in this book.

An amazingly well organized and well written book. Signal estimation is well broken down in to parts. Every theory discussion is followed with an example, which make sure you completely understand it. Not many books out there have examples illustrating the theoretical discussions, which in my opinions makes this book stand out from the rest.
The book thrives on simplicity in its discussions, which doesnt mean this is a book for beginners. Just that this book can be used from beginners to advanced users if you want to clearly understand the theory and derivations. Highly recommend the book.

Well..would say a life time reference book for me...bt as chapters progress it assumes you have the other twin too .. (estimation theory)..better invite them to your shelf together to get a feel ..!
But this costly book comes with a worst-ever-binding..which appears to be firm from outside...Initially I thought it was only me who suffered from this ..but it seems many has expressed the same view...papers coming out day-by-day

After buying a book for about $80 I expect to get value for my money. I was extremely disappointed to note that just one week after using the textbook (and solving exactly one homework assignment of 4 problems) the pages began to come out. I have seen other friends who bought the book have a similar problem. The contents of the book deserve 4 stars. But the lousy binding pulls down its rating to 2 stars.

For a $90+ book the quality of paper is low and binding very bad. On the very day I got the book from Amazon, I had papers coming out unstuck. The paper used is not archival quality, typically expected for such high priced books. I am very disappointed. Modern airborne and spaceborne imaging radars, known assynthetic aperture radars (SARs), are capable of producinghigh-quality pictures of the earth's surface while avoiding some ofthe shortcomings of certain other forms of remote imaging systems.Primarily, radar overcomes the nighttime limitations of opticalcameras, and the cloud- cover limitations of both optical and infraredimagers. In addition, because imaging radars use a form of coherentillumination, they can be used in certain special modes such asinterferometry, to produce some unique derivative image productsthat incoherent systems cannot. One such product is a highlyaccurate digital terrain elevation map (DTEM). The most recent (ca.1980) version of imaging radar, known as spotlight-mode SAR, canproduce imagery with spatial resolution that begins to approach thatof remote optical imagers. For all of these reasons, syntheticaperture radar imaging is rapidly becoming a key technology in theworld of modern remote sensing. Much of the basic `workings' of synthetic aperture radars is rooted inthe concepts of signal processing. I think not enough practicing engineers are reviewing this book. I work in the radar imaging field and everyone I talk to at work loves this book. I just started in this field a few months back and I've found this to be much better than Carrera for learning about SAR imaging.

What's great about this book is that it is both clear and concise, which is very difficult to do. I feel like after having read the first two chapters I understand the SAR image formation theory. The tomographic paradigm explored in this book is so much easier to understand than the Doppler filtering ideas presented in other texts. It just makes sense.

The third chapter is also great because it basically gets into the details of how the operations in chapter two are actually performed. The author does a great job of building on the basic theory with incrementally understandable improvements (polar formatting, FFTs, windowing, etc.).

As someone just recently starting out I was able to pick up chapter four before anything else and understand and apply the Phase Gradient Autofocus method, which is also elegantly simple.

I'm currently reading the section on Interferometry, which I also find to be useful. I do wish there was some information on using interferometry (horizontal baseline) to detect and geolocate moving targets, but that can't be held against the author since that's a different field more applicable to range-Doppler imaging and MTI.

This is one of those rare text books that I actually enjoy and I feel is applicable to both the novice and experienced engineer alike.

The book was a major disappointment given the previous "5 star" rating and high price.I quit reading the book after 56 pages.

As stated on page 34, a major assumption for the spotlight SAR processing appears to be that the wavefront "curves are well approximated with straight lines."Five pages later an example produces a 1500 m synthetic aperture length requirement for 1 m resolution at a 50 km standoff distance.The range migration for this example is $[(50e3)^2+(1500/2)^2]^{1/2}-50e3$, or 5.6 m.This is 6 range bins.Nowhere in the ensuing 17 pages is the magnitude of this effect discussed or treatment for it mentioned.

The treatment of the projection-slice theorem refers the reader to Appendix A for a one page generalization of the rotation property of Fourier transforms.A simple version could have been incorporated directly in the demonstration of the theorem and made the theorem more readable.

On page 45, "1 foot" is also referred to as "0.33 meters."One foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, or, when rounded to two digits, 0.30 meters.Alternatively, 0.33 meters is 1.083 feet, or, when rounded to two digits, 1.1 feet (although 1.1 feet is 0.34 meters when rounded to two digits).In any case, the arithmetic presented in the book is sloppy.

The "folksy" style adds lots of words and little substance to the presentation.Most technical authors do not find it necessary to refer to "mathematical" expressions when presenting equations since this is a fundamental part of the language for technical writing.There are several references to material which will be discussed later, which turns out to be minor.This disrupts the flow of the presentation, adding words but not content or connections.The presentation for the linear FM chirp is disjointed.The presentation in Curlander and McDonough is much better and produces a terminology that is clear and meaningful through the remainder of their book.

The book also uses notation that is inconsistent with other radar books.This makes it difficult to use the book as a reference because the meaning the terms used in the equations is not clear.

This book is not as lucid as some of the other reviews have been ranting about on the internet. You really have to submerge yourself in reading as if you were a reading a novel to fully pinpoints some of the imperative formulas and vital methods in understand the author's intention. Posing as an advanced digital signal processing book without answers to check at the end of chapter's questions is just a loss for words; and very careless. Even if you have bought the hardcover edition that comes with the CD is nearly useless, unless you are an instructor and can benefit from the quizzes, samples of wave files, and lab works. The CD, however, does not provide step-by-step solution nor does it have the answers to the end of chapter's questions. My point is not to get answers but, it would be nice to know if I am on the right track after spending 2 hours figuring out the problems and not to mention the reading time. I do not recommend this book on its own. This book is for serious readers that can absorb the concepts and methods from reading or someone with great understand of digital signal processing and just need a supplemental book.

This text is very reader friendly. I have used this book in college and enjoyed it because of the fact that it is very clear and provides many illustrative examples to clarify certain concepts. I do agree with one reviewer in that its too bad it does not have solutions to the end of chapter problems, and for that I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

If you want to get a clear concept and understanding of DSP without the complicated and exhaustive mathematics from other books, then purchase this one and keep it in your personal library.

This is an excellent book for someone who needs to pick up the essentials of estimation theory in a hurry. I have never taken a course on statistical signal processing or information theory, and yet I was able to learn the subject just from reading this textbook to the point where I can do graduate level research in the area. Kay makes the text very readable so one can just follow along as if attending lectures, and he does a brilliant job of striking the right balance of theory and real-world examples so you can really understand the material. I did not have enough time to try many of the exercise problems, but the ones that I did try were excellent. I was however able to gain enough understanding through the text and examples to actually put it into practice in my own research, so that is definitely the sign of a great textbook.

I bought this book because I wanted an practical adjunct to accompany my study of linear modeling theory using Stapleton's "Linear Statistical Models." Stapleton's text is theoretical where results are explained. I had hoped Kay's book would provide some practical examples from engineering and technology. The problem was that Kay's book just states results. There is no development of the results from beginning theory with examples. Why should one make the assumptions he makes?

But this is just my take. From perusing the other reviews of Kay's book, he produces what some other reader's want.

I've had this book a while but last night just picked it up and worked through the first three chapters. This is how technical writing should be done. First of all, it progresses from a point that is not too difficult to understand. But even in doing that, it hits the important topics right away. After reading some other esoteric texts this one strikes the perfect balance between theory, applications, review, and math and makes the topic quickly understandable. I especially like the focus on what really works in practice.

I bought both volumes of this book for self learning, and have enjoyed the clear content.However, I was very surprised to find sections beginning to fall out of one of the volumes.As others did, I thought my copy was the only unfortunate one.However, it appears the poor binding quality is showing in many other copies.For the excellent material that this book contains, it is a shame and seems inconsistent that such poor physical quality was chosen.The price of the book should cover much better quality.However, if money was the issue, I would still rather pay $10 or even $20 more for a book that would last.

I am a computer scientist and I am trying to learn DSP.

I thought getting this book would help me with this process, because it seemed to be a book for computer scientists but it is not.

==This book is intended for those who are already familiar with DSP and want to explore C++.==

If you are a computer scientist and aren't familiar with DSP you will need another book to understand the DSP side of the book.

I got the book with no CD. That was very frustrating. Customer support was really bad. Make sure you get one with a CD.

Once I got the code (I found it on an ftp server somewhere, so I don't know if it is the latest disc, maybe there is a better updated one),I had to change many things. The main problems where:

The majority of projects don't compile in Visual Studio 2008.
The author uses PRE-STANDARD C++. This means that many things he uses don't exist today:
+flags like fstream nocreate don't exist today
+Include preprocessor directives with .h extensions will force you to rewrite things.
+I went through hell to fix(BYTE) errors.
+Some for loops miss variable type declaration.

All in all, this book is completely outdated in the programming side, and very confusing in the theoretical side.

The current edition of this book does NOT contain a physical CD-ROM. Instead, Prentice Hall has a link on their website that allows you to download the CD-ROM contents as a single ZIP file. That's a 207 MB ZIP file, folks. They've made no provisions for partial downloads...

This must be Prentice Hall's idea of a good way to increase the profit margin on their books. Recently, I've run across a couple other titles from PH-PTR where the CD-ROM mentioned in the preface is no longer included. In some cases, they haven't made the contents available on the web -- or even bothered to tell the book's author that they're dropping the media from the package.

The title promises a lot. But it doesn't deliver. This book is muddled and confused. It begins with a rather high browed treatment of the maths behind DSP then goes on to attempt to provide examples in C++. The examples are poor and unclear. The supplied code compiles under VC++ but not under any other platform without substantial reworking.
Over 100 pages of this 500 page book are devoted to a general discussion of the C++ language. Why? If I wanted this type of material I would consult my C++ manual. Here are C++ programmers who want to tell us the do's and don't's of the language, that feel the need to test newed pointers for NULL after allocating and before deleting!
As far as the rest of the book is concerned I found the examples and text unclear, pedantic and frankly quite useless. I will keep my copy only because I want to use the theoretical material. But this material was written for maths graduates - pages upon pages of proofs and derivations that provide little insight into the underlying principles and serve nothing. Hold off and buy something more usable.

Good introduction to various speech processing techniques. Attempts were made to cover very broad areas such as speech synthesis, coding, and recognition; which obviously cannot be done in a single volume. The serious readers looking to specialize in any of the mentioned areas must find other sources for more thorough info. Also note that many materials in the book are already outdated due to rapid technological advances.

This is the book to have on your shelf if you are a serious about speech processing. The authors give a through treatment to the fundamental issues involved in speech processing. This outstanding work of two leaders in DSP and Speech processing, will help you to get started with the fascinating subject of speech processing. The issues covered in the book are still relevant today as it was back in 1970's. Though a bit dated this work is a classic.

I have read lots of introductory and advanced dsp books. In my opinion this book is the best book when it comes to learning fundamentals. This was the book along with the book i'll mention later which allowed me to read and understand more advanced books. Explanations are clear and supported with lots of figures and worked examples. Even though software examples provided on it's disk is very primitive and dated, they are still very helpful for beginners. (Source codes available and perfect for validating your understanding about formulas and calculations) I strongly recommend it. Understanding Digital Signal Processing (2nd Edition) by Richard G. Lyons is also great. If possible buy both otherwise buy this one.

I say universal because this book would appeal to engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians alike. Mallat was particularly successful to present the topic in a sufficiently rigorous way but without losing sight of the practical and more intuitive side. The presentation comprises the mathematical and the signal processing viewpoints simultaneously. The wavelet field is very vast by now with several subfields. In this respect, Mallat made a great selection of topics in this book. There is a chapter on estimation which offers great review material and pretty much the state-of-the art on signal estimation over a wavelet basis. The chapter on approximation is particularly useful for those who are not well versed in approximation theory and thus areunable to understand other treatments. If you're interested in learning wavelet theory to solve practical problems such as image compression, signal estimation, etc, this is the book to have.

I just finished Chapter 3 of this book, but I have had enough of it. Conceptions about Fourier Transform are not clear at all.And the most unbearable thing is that, there are many printing errors which may lead to misunderstanding.

The subject of wavelets has many facets, --infinite in all directions;-- some of the more exciting sides of the subject
are algorithmic, and the underlying mathematical principles are both simple and powerful. Stephane Mallat's great, and readable, book, in both of its editions, brings
this out wonderfully!

This is an outstanding tour through the field of wavelet decompositions of both continuous and discrete signals. It employs the formalism of Hilbert space, instead of linear algebra. This is important because the power of this formalism yields insights into the subject matter that are practically impossible in linear algebra. The formalized approach allows a wide variety of subjects to be placed on a common basis (no pun intended). For example, the transition of the treatment of the Fourier transform into Hilbert space, brings to bear the powerful guns of that space (such guns as inner product and completeness), and allows for a truly elegant proof of the Parseval and Plancherel formulas.
Parseval's theorem, simply stated, is that the inner products in Hilbert space are conserved by the Fourier transform. How simple. Linear algebra approaches cannot hope to make things this simple.

Proof of the General Sampling Theorem is equally elegant; it is shown that the projection of the function to be decomposed onto a basis function gives the discrete spectral coefficient.

Readers will also enjoy the treatment of windowed Fourier transforms and frames.

I should add a note about the style of the treatise. This treatise is not ordinary. It consistently uses very precise and carefully defined symbology. Contrary to popular belief, this makes the text easier to read, not more difficult. Once the reader understands the symbol set being used (they are all defined in the front of the text), even the proofs are tractable. Yes, I said proofs. That is another aspect of the text. There are proofs embedded in the text, without loss of continuity or clarity. Proofs are necessary to a good understanding of the subject matter. The formalism of theorems, lemmas and propositions makes the conclusions understandable, because the theorems, lemmas and propositions supporting the conclusions are identifiable.

I applaud the author for his approach and recommend that other text book writers use the same approach. ... Read more
