3-0 out of 5 stars The 1976 copy i read lacked new scientific knowledge.
I just finished reading a borrowed copy of this book for a school paper on 3-toed sloths (genus: bradypus). The book is not very long, i think i read it in one hour, which usually suggests to me that i not purchase a book.Though i must admit the pictures were really cute, and hard to ignore.the sloths lounging on the sofa, and on the patio in the sun were too cute. One warning though for people interested in sloths; This book does not have a great deal of scientific information.I felt shocked reading that at one point the author started feeding them rice in a bucket!?!And the fact that he assembled a family of 6 normally solitary individuals as pets and almost treated them like property giving them to his friends and etc...Lastly, i was aghast to read that they all died in the end when they caught some virus. This book really should not be meant for children.Beyond that, it encourages people to adopt animals they know nothing about just because they are cute, only to see them die in the end.Definitely not the thing we are taught in college these days. Be cautious of reading and promoting this book.thanks, lr

5-0 out of 5 stars Have You Ever Wanted A Pet So Badly that...
This book, first published in 1953 has almost disappeared from shelves and finding one is like finding a hidden treasure. This is a delightful story about a little girl who so desperately wants a pet that she obtains and smuggles into her home, a sloth. The results are funny and touching.

I highly recommend this book as it deals not only with the problem of the yearning of a child, but with her interaction with her dad who is both loving and too strict.A fun, funny reading experience that speaks to today as effectively as it did decades ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Synopsis
From jacket:"Julie Potter loved animals, naturally. Most children her age do.Just as naturally most fathers don't love them quite so much. And if father is a dentist, or otherwise filled with a special horror of germs, he may not love them at all--in fact he may not want them around! That was Julie's great trial. For Julie was not only fond of all animals. She loved one animal particularly--Sampson.Sampson was a giant two toed sloth. The zoo man sold him to Julie for a dollar, because the zoo was going out of business.Julie was sure he was the one and only pet for her, and wanted to keep him, always. You can imagine what Dr. Potter would say to that!Actually, you can't possibly imagine what happened after Julie brought home her sloth. ... Product Description
1847. The book begins: Many years since there stood in the suburbs of the then pretty little village of -, (now so well known as one of our largest inland towns,) a small unpainted house, with a broken rail-fence between it and the road-a slovenly pair of bars, always thrown partly down, professing to give admission to the enclosure. The situation was pleasant, and if the evident marks of poverty and slovenliness which met one at the first glance did not deter from further observation, a little fancy might have transformed it into an inviting spot. The house was dilapidated, but not from age; and there were fruit-trees, though broken and unpruned; and rose bushes and lilacs, and currant and gooseberry bushes, upon which the little herd browsed. Yet, probably, few passers by suffered their attention to dwell long enough upon the place, to note any thing that could have rendered it even attractive. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty or faded. ... Read more

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here.
