A Book that will Influence Your thinking
Whether you are a social psychologist or someone who wants to become more persuasive in the workplace, you will find this book to be a worthy investment.

Anthony Pratkanis, a social psychologist who is frequently cited in the persuasion literature, brings together prominent names in the field who cover a lot of ground, with each chapter devoted to a different topic. This book follows Pratkanis' earlier book about social influence, the popular "Age of Propaganda," which he wrote with Elliot Aronson.

Redundant and homiletically useless
The introduction/ preliminary chapters are very informative and worth reading.Great information.Unfortunately, it seems the rest of the book merely demonstrates the astrological connections to everything John writes in his apocalypse.I wanted to read the whole thing in order to better understand this mysterious book... no luck.

I was very interested to see how they unpacked their division of Revelation which seemed good, but they never really explained it.

Also, they reject any allegorical element of Rome, which I think most scholars would disagree with.

Some serious oversights
The book is useful and interesting, but there are some glaring errors that Catholic scholars should note. For example, Malina suggests that the sword issuing from the mouth of the angelic being in book 1 represents a comet. This is downright erroneous. The sword issues from a mouth, that is, it is the double-edged word of God that has a devastating effect on unbelievers. Perhaps the professor should eat some humble pie and go back to Herman Bernard Kramer's Book of Destiny to learn about ancient christian symbolism (its not all derived from eastern cults) and what was really going on in the mediterranean mind of messianic expectations.

Interesting
Malina and Pilch take John of Patmos at his word.They believe that John's vision of the heavens is an astrological vision.According to Malina and Pilch the ancients looked to the cosmos to predict the future and John of Patmos was no exception.

I enjoyed reading the book.The explanations in the commentary are very understandable.The biggest flaw in this book is that there are no notes.There reader is usually left to ponder where the authors came up with their ideas.

Despite not knowing the authors' sources, this was a very enjoyable book to read.It is also one of the few biblical commentaries with extensive illustrations.

If you want to read a very different view of Revelation (not dispensationalist nor historical critical nor even literary critical) this is the book for you.You'll also learn a little about ancient astronomy/astrology along the way. ... Read more

to all students, professionals or prospective researchers, this book really implied the ethic concepts on doing researches. Details oriented, cases study, and examples. As I will be doing my thesis next year, this book introduced and guided me to be a "better" future researcher. I am so glad that my professor chose this book for us to begin with.

Shoddy, Incomplete, Many Errors
The info provided is okay. The tests are poorly constructed and full of questions that either don't make sense, or are not similar to the questions on the Praxis (I just took it). After taking these practice tests I was really worried, because even after reading the minimal explanations of answers, some did not make sense to me. Stick to the ETS-produced book. It's true to the test.

Item pretty decent
It has two full length tests in it. They are somewhat realistic when compared to the actual test. It does also include some broad background material for studying purposes and broadly explained explanations for the correct answers. It was a little vague but I think it helped me at least a little bit before my test.

A Good Start, But Not Enough
This book will give you a very barebones look at the material that may be on the Praxis II: Social Studies Content Knowledge exam. I took the Praxis test today, so I can tell you that this book doesn't nearly cover the range of knowledge needed to pass the test. What it does do is go through each of the sections and subsections listed in the ETS overview of the Social Studies Praxis. It gives you either broad statements about these sections' content, details with no context (as if you know who Chandragupta II is), or provides absolutely useless information (as in the geography section).

The strongest part of this book are the 2 full length practice tests. There's no better way to prepare for the test than testing yourself and this is the only Social Studies prep book that has *2* tests. The questions are better than the content portion of the book because they pick up on the small details, just like the real Praxis exam. However, be aware that there are two answer keys, one basic and one explaining how to choose the right answer, or why the answer is correct. I noticed discrepancies between the two keys on Practice Test #2. Use the explanation key - it's accurate.

I found that I learned much more (and had a much more enjoyable time) reading "US History for Dummies" and "World History for Dummies" to learn some content material than the Cliffsnotes. Sure, Cliffsnotes is short and "easy." If you're a history major or an undergraduate going for your social studies certification, you'll probably have no problem using this book to refresh your memory. For those who are adding on certification (like myself - I'm certified in English) or have no formal training in history, this is a good starting point, but you will need to use other sources to prepare for the Praxis.

UPDATE: I passed...20 points over the state requirement!

All the help you can get
When preparing for the Praxis II in Social Studies,you will feel intimidated and rightfully so.A lot of material is included on the test and depending on the formulation of the questions, you may be unable to answer the specific question (while maintaining a good understanding of the subject).I preferred this text over the "official" praxis book.It is helpful in familiarizing the student with the subjects.However, neither can prepare the student for the obsure question that depends on one's mastery of historical trivia.This book will help reveal your areas of scholastic weakness. However, this book will not give you the answers you need, just the motivation to go find these answers.Buy this book early as a tool to direct you the areas of study you most need.

Really less than one star...
Here is a good quote that really sums up the quality of this book. Part I: Subject Area Review: United States History, page 30, "Christopher Columbus sought financial backing for a sea route to Asia. In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain agreed to give Columbus the funding to reach Asia by going east around Africa, so he and his three ships - the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria - finally left Spain." That is just sad. Ferdinand agreed to finance Columbus's plan (radical at the time) to sail west, directly to Asia, not around Africa.

I have not yet taken the Praxis II: Social Studies Content Knowledge Test (0081), but I do know from the first thirty pages of this book that it is totally worthless. I am scheduled to take the exam this Saturday. I signed up for the first available exam and paid extra for the last minute signup fee. I searched through the local bookstores and found this to be the only Praxis Text 0081 study guide available. I wanted to buy a book with practice tests instead of downloading something from the internet (that would be more expensive from dubious websites). I really regret buying this book and wish that I had read through it before I left the store. The information in it is very common knowledge with vague summaries of content anyone needing to take the test would already know. I am very knowledgeable about world history and American history but my memory is fuzzy on exact dates and I was hopping it would have been possible to brush up on them but there are very few actual dates given, everything is surmised in time spans of several hundred years leaving gaping holes of important events. In those summaries there are at least one or two important people mentioned or listed (I can think of many more that would possibly appear on the real test) but no supporting information about why they are important. I was really hoping for some good information in the Political Science, Economics, and Behavioural Science categories because I am worried I may not be familiar with all the terms and key people in these areas. From what I read in the History section, I really don't think I can place any trust in these sections for test preparation. Since the test is so soon I do not have time to go online to find another book, I can only just hope for the best and go online for a better resource if I do not pass with a high enough score on those sections. For the Praxis I Math, Reading, and Writing test I used Barron's test prep book. It was actually helpful (I had forgotten much of my math) and the practice tests and advice throughout reflected closely to the testing experience I went through, except that the test times were actually longer than the time listed in Baron's (no complaints from me on that!). This Cliffs Test Prep book does not even say that the test is timed nor if the sections are timed independently or if it is all at once! I still don't know! I'd be a lot better off gauging myself against a set time, especially if it is slightly shorter than the real test - then I will feel a bit relief when I have more time than expected on the test day. Stay away from this book. If I end up looking for something better after the test I will update this post with a alternative resource suggestion. ... Read more

Stop. think.
This book does contain some nuggets of wisdom for beginners in social science, but as a student I thought it took far too long to say far too little. There are far too many examples for concepts that only need one or two examples. For example, the authors frequently littler the pages with "Stop. Think." as they propose several alternative hypotheses for certain observations and models. Also, the book does seem to have an suffocating liberal bias. I don't consider myself particularly conservative, but some of the "hypothetical" examples seem pretty off the walls (such as the suggestion that the U.S. discriminates against ethnic minorities because they have higher death rates than whites). Ideally, I would recommend skimming the book and paying attention to the conclusion, but don't get too bogged down in the details. ... Read more
