5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Intro Sociology Textbooks Ever Written
As a Sociology professor I have used and reviewed dozens of introductory sociology textbooks over the years, and Macionis Sociology is the one I always come back to.Although it is not perfect, it is simply one of the best. Why? Here are the major reasons:

1) Clear writing that is easily understood by students who are at a basic learning level and yet challenging to advanced students.
2) Comprehensive coverage of all major areas of the discipline of sociology with very thorough citation of most of the essential scholars in the field, including scholars with a variety of viewpoints.
3) Outstanding use of art, photography, graphs, maps and tables to engage visual learners.
4) Practical, real world examples to engage concrete learners.
5) An extensive and exhaustive bibliography that serves as an invaluable research tool for students.
6) Concise chapter summaries that serve as effective study guides for tests and exams.
7) Evenhanded discussion and debate guidelines for controversial topics.
8) Exceptional incorporation of international sociology and international examples.

In short, you will find intro textbooks that are more advanced, others that are more basic, but few as comprehensive as Macionis Sociology. There is a reason it is now in its 13th Edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poorly written, lots of misleading info
First, this book was written with a typical left-wing agenda.I found it to be completely un-objective.

Second, there are countless misleading statistics and twisted facts. There are also countless out of date facts.

Third, there are also countless made-up "facts" with NO citation. These are opinions that are being presented as facts without any supporting evidence.

I can't believe this book is being used to teach Sociology classes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Never recieved item
Never recieved item. Item returned to seller via USPS as undeliverable. Most items ship UPS and is never a problem. Seller did not specify item was to be sent by US Postal service. Bought this book for my son for a college course. Had to purchase elsewhere. Course will probably be over by the time this gets resolved. Have asked for a refund several times through emails & phone call. Won't return call or emails and NO refund as of yet. Very disappointing since most sellers on amazon are great. ... Read more

Product Description
Like its predecessors, the seventh edition of this text reflects Rick Schaefer's mission to bring readers a comprehensive, up-to-date presentation that teaches them how to think critically about society and their own lives from a wide range of classical and contemporary perspectives. Combining balanced coverage of theory with current research findings, distinctive social policy sections, examples of interest to students, and abundant learning aids and exercises, this text will help students develop a sociological imagination. An optional package combines Schaefer, Sociology, Seventh Edition and Reel Society Interactive Movie 2.0 CD-ROM at nominal extra cost.

"The introductory sociology class provides the ideal laboratory in which to study our own society and those of our global neighbors. The distinctive emphasis on social policy found in this text shows students how to use the sociological imagination in examining such public policy issues as sexual harassment, the AIDS crisis, welfare reform, the death penalty, and the offshoring of service jobs." 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Overall this sociology book was one of my best purchase. I don't regret buying it at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seventh Edition
Product was delivered quickly and in advertised condition.

Please note that this is the SEVENTH edition, which my college hasn't been using for at least 4 semesters now.My prof told me today that using it would leave me at a serious disadvantage since it's out of date.I didn't read the fine print closely enough and now my purchase is a waste of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Study
This is a great book for those who are interested in
knowing the study of sociology. It is set up well in
its instruction.

I love the fact that you have the chapter and at the
end some questions (with the answers upside down), so
you can evalute if you learn what was intended. And if
you are in a hurry, after that section is an overview
of what the chapter is to teach with brief summaries and
word definitions.

The only down side that I have found is this book is
biase towards the Conflict theory and Liberal types.
Overall though, it does a fairly good job of being
balanced.

Product Description

"Michael Handel has assembled an authoritative and wide-ranging collection of key articles in the organizations field, and complements these papers with a terrific critical survey of the literature. His introductory essays will benefit both students and researchers alike. This collection is a real service to the field."

- Walter W. Powell, Stanford University

"A unique reader and commentary with broad coverage of the classics, combined with a healthy skepticism about received theories and an emphasis on the impact of organizations on society. The lucid commentary brightens the field."

- Charles Perrow, Yale University

For the first time, a single volume offers a comprehensive selection of primary readings and companion overview essays on the sociology of organizations. These readings and essays provide incisive and guided coverage of the subjects normally included in a one-semester sociology of organizations course.

The Sociology of Organizations covers the full range of theoretical perspectives and substantive topics through readings that are either classics in the field or widely discussed and debated "new classics."

Section introductions explain key terms and concepts, provide illustrations, and summarize related debates and research in clear prose. The depth of these overview essays makes this book ideal for use as either as a stand-alone text or a supplementary reader. After reading this book, students will have a thorough understanding of central concepts and an appreciation of the primary texts that are the foundation of the field.

Scholars and students in the fields of sociology, management, organizational behavior, and organizational psychology and those within political science and economics who are interested in how organizations function will find this work a welcome, invaluable resource.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition not worth the money
I bought this book and was given a refund, but I want to let people know that they're better off buying a printed copy of the book. The Kindle version is a cheaply produced version.

This Kindle version has numerous errors in spelling and formatting. It was obviously scanned and OCR'd from the printed text, but has not been proofread. For instance, these words are at the first Kindle location: "X rel;" and "reiace." I assume that's supposed to be something like page "X" and "Preface." But if Amazon can't be bothered to fix simple errors like that at the first location in the text (which would be the first page of the printed edition), then what other errors have been allowed to slide through the rest of the text? My favorite error is between locations 21-33. I found this word, "5jBa039." I can't even guess what that's supposed to say.

I'm an academic and it's quite important that I have a reliable text to work with. This book is not ready for prime time, and needs serious word-by-word editing by a professional. They shouldn't even be selling this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars As promised!I'm delighted.
Excellent in speed to get the prodcut to me, Great Quality in the product.

Thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this edition
I strongly recommend that you don't buy that edition in any circumstance! It's just a photocopy, with lots of underline. Some pages are really hard to read. Funny thing: it's a expensive "edition". My opinion: Amazon must drop out this item from the bookstore. Really.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outrageous
As another review has mentioned, this is just a photocopy -- literally, a photocopy, printed and bound, complete with UNDERLINING by the previous owner. This is absolutely ridiculous and I can't believe Amazon sells it. I'll be returning this immediately, calling amazon and complaining very loudly, and buying a real book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a reprinted photocopy of USED 1946 edition with UNDERLINING
This is the worst quality book I have ever purchased. The publisher (it appears to be booksllc.net) just photocopied at 1946 Oxford University Press edition, complete with faded print and the previous owner's UNDERLINING (!!!!), and made a print run.I will be returning this outrage immediately and purchasing the 1958 Oxford edition instead. ... Product Description

Organized around an integrated paradigm—the sociospatial perspective—this breakthrough text considers the role played by social factors such as race, class, gender, lifestyle, economics, culture, and politics on the development of metropolitan areas. By moving beyond the traditional city/suburb dichotomy, the authors’ unique focus on the continuously changing nature of metropolitan regions makes the material more relevant to students’ personal experiences, and the cohesive conceptual framework engages students’ critical thinking skills. It integrates the social ecological with the political economy paradigm through a fresh theoretical approach emphasizing the importance of space to social life and real estate to the economy and urban development. Fully revised throughout, this edition features a new chapter on metropolitan social policy and expanded discussions of international regions, key concepts, and the effect of the economic crisis on housing markets, public policy, and urban development. Concise and accessible, this book offers students a brief, intelligible history of urban life from its origins to the industrial period, as well as a clear, sophisticated summary of urban social theory.

SOCIOLOGY is truly a classic introductory text which introduces students to the methods and theories of sociology using Rodney Stark's hallmark "Over the Shoulder of a professional sociologist" approach, presenting sociology on a personal level. Stark describes what sociologists do and how they do it, focusing first on the questions they pose and how they search for and formulate their answers, and then moving on to study their answers and conclusions. In this way, he effectively explores themes, raising issues in a straightforward manner with historical accuracy and solid research. Product Description
Steve Bruce conveys the essence of the field of sociology in this fascinating volume.A well-known populizer of the discipline, Bruce presents here an introduction to a way of thinking that will appeal to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of modern society.

Bruce reasserts the value of sociology as a social science, as a framework of understanding the human condition that grounds its explanations in reliable observations of the real world. Drawing on studies of social class, crime and deviance, work in bureaucracies, and changes in religious and political organizations, Bruce explores the tension between the individual's role in society and society's role in shaping the individual.Sociology: A Very Short Introduction demonstrates the value of sociology as a perspective for understanding the modern world. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for
I wanted a general knowledge of the discipline of sociology, and I got it in this book! I felt like I finished this book with an understanding of what exactly this social science is concerned with, how they go about doing their research, and some of the significant findings over the its history. It was an easy read, all things considered.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent introduction to sociological practice
This book is a well thought-out and clearly written introduction to sociological practice. Although he does provide examples of both particular and general topics that sociology investigates, the author is explicit that his intention is not to list various issues or problems sociologists study (in fact, he has an excellent discussion of the common misconception that sociology is the study of social problems), but rather to explain the methods and approaches that define sociology as a discipline and an area of intellectual inquiry. In this, he does a fine job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent introduction, perhaps not up to usual VSI standard
I was interested in discovering more about this subject and having read the volumes on British Politics, Psychology and Buddhism I decided to read this. Unfortunately it is not the best in the series - it fails to group its ideas into a particularly memorable structure, leaving the reader with disjointed thoughts but little essence of the main points of the subject. Nevertheless, as always with this series, a good way to get into a topic you don't know much about. The use of anecdotes and examples is engaging but occasionally seemingly off-point. Nevertheless, eminently readable. 3 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nonetheless, a worthwhile review
David Ross (in another review) is accurate and forthright. Bruce's read is indeed willy-nilly and impressionistic. These characteristics are the fault, but also the tool, of his writing many short such summaries. Someone who has only briefly visited the discipline for a writing assignment cannot be expected to know, for example, that there is already a body of theory (developed by Donald Black) which does what Bruce implies is either impossible or uninteresting: provide scientific order to a vast array of variation in social life without regard to individuals as such, and without the use of anything remotely psychological.

Befitting a "very short introduction", the reader should not be relied upon for much more than a brief glance. However, it does provide the glance, and even does so with continuity as well as both humor and grace. While the coverage is lacking, the verbiage is pleasingly precise. Don't read this to *complete* your investigation into sociology. But don't back away from it as a very short introduction. That is all it is, and all it was meant to be.

Product Description
This sociological analysis of the system of marriage and family focuses on the family as an institution in society. It uniquely encompasses many facets of society, and students are able to learn about family seen through a cultural and historical perspective. The book sets a high conceptual standard, but uses informal writing and minimal jargon. It presents the perspectives of critical and questioning academics (feminists, progressives, anti-racists, independent-thinkers, cross-disciplinary types, etc.) within a scholarly, well-researched text. It addresses a host of real world issues and practical concerns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Sociology Resource
I have found this to be a useful resource. Perhaps there are better, but this is surely a bargain for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
I had to buy this book for my Sociology class. After receiving it and browsing through it, I found some of the information in it very interesting. Now I am happy to have it in my collection and will be using it long after the class is done.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid purchase of above
I cannot recall a single instance wherein I reached for my Oxford Sociology Dictionary and found the term I was looking for. For example, the term `white privilege' and 'social hierarchy' are not even included. This dictionary needs much updating if it is to be considered a thorough sociology dictionary, let alone a useable one. I would not recommend this work to anyone. ... Read more

Product Description

Sociology Now: The Essentials reflects the discipline today and explores the big questions about multiculturalism and globalization that sociologists ask.

Sociology has always offered a way to make sense of the complex and sometimes contradictory forces that shape our social lives in any era. As Sociology Now explains sociology as both a body of knowledge and a "way of seeing," it shows how two such forces in particular have come to preoccupy sociologists and influence the way they look at the events and experiences of the early twenty first century:

The first is globalization--the economic, political, cultural, and social interconnections among people and institutions all over the world.

The second is multiculturalism--the recognition that race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and other statuses are sources of social inequality, but also the foundations of our identities.

Michael Kimmel, a leading sociologist and gender researcher, and co-author Amy Aronson, a journalist and media scholar, address these questions head-on as they make a compelling case for the importance of sociology in the contemporary world.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
This is supposed to be a short review, but the book is okay. Definitely not the best. I used it for Sociology 1 but apparently the person I bought it from used it for Sociology 101 or something like that.

The chapters are long and somewhat dry. I feel like the authors say a lot of things that do not matter. Sometimes, they are not clear in what they are trying to say. Each chapter ends with a section about how the topic relates in the 21st century.

Some topics covered in the book:

What is Sociology?
Methods of the Sociologist
Deviance and Crime
Stratification and Social Class
Race and Ethnicity
Sex and Gender
Age and Sexuality
The Family
Economy and Work
Politics and Media
Education

2-0 out of 5 stars Sociology book
I purchased this book for $40.00, and when I recieved it, on the front cover it says "free issue for professors to review and consider adopting" why did I pay for someone else's free book?

1-0 out of 5 stars Well....there has got to be an easier way to learn Sociology.
You have to read each chapter word for word, or you will not gather enough information to understand the concepts. Explanations and examples are not precise. I'm sure there is an easier way to learn this subject. I would not recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Biased
I am a college student in Nevada and I have this book as the main text for my sociology class. Although this book is colorful, up-to-date, and slightly entertaining, it suffers from rank biases. The authors, especially Dr. Michael Kimmel, are very feminist, hate the so-called "heterosexual, white male" among other things and seem to have a problem with presenting sociology without an implicit ideological slant. Should these people even be writing a textbook? The goal of a textbook is to provide information so the student can come to conclusions on his/her own, not to sneak in a socio-political perspective in the back door. Regardless of the authors political opinions, they should have at least attempted to hide their biases so not to alienate their readers because everyone has DIFFERENT BELIEFS, we are not a monolithic species.

All I ask is just some level of objectivity because it is very annoying to read opinions presented as facts, regardless of political persuasion. Whether or not a person believes that all the world's problems are caused by heterosexuals, Christians, whites, or men, this should not be presented as FACT because at the end of the day it is just an opinion. It should not make it into an "objective" textbook. ~Jessica
