This book was purchased for my Sociology class. I got an A. Served its purpose.

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Sociology
If you are taking Ms. Even's class at South College... DON'T BYE THIS BOOK! You don't need it. We looked at it once! Everything you need to know is written on the board.

4-0 out of 5 stars previous edition much better
The new addition by Brinkerhoff et. al., though it provides the basics for teaching introduction to Sociology and by far one of the best texts available, is more efficient, but sacrifices much needed information. The recent edition deletes a chapter and attempts to incorparate issues of poverty and inequality in the other chapters, but this really needs to be its own chapter, so I would recommend that they reintroduce it in future editions.Furthermore, their population and urban discussion is good, but its environmental discussion is weak. They really need to add a stronger environmental piece.Furthermore, I really thought that their section on religion was much better in the previous edition.Students had a much easier time grasping concepts. The authors redid this section and now the distinct sects and subsects are unclear. Finally, I would recommend that if you use this book that you find supplemental material on social stratification, social inequality and social differentiation because the book does a poor job discussing the differences.I also would recommend supplemental materials to discuss the race and ethnicity chapter because its discussion on ideological racism and its history is weak.

Despite my minor critiques, I still would hightly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary of Sociology
I am a college senior and am really glad I purchased this item. It has really come in handy for all those sociological terms in my sociology text books. It was a good price and received it in great condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me from a web of confusion

During my first undergraduate sociology topic, I became confused by all the unfamiliar terms I was encountering in the readings. This dictionary saved me from a web of confusion by clearly defining each term.

The terms are explicitly explained and differentiated from each other. This sort of description is hard to come by in sociological literature.

It also acknowledges the relationship between terms by recommending other terms to refer to.Below many definitions, there are even references to readings if you want more information on the topic.

While the definitions are restricted to explain only the given term, they are also detailed enough to give a good understanding of the meaning and context of the term. Most terms are explained in a paragraph or two, while more important and complex terms or phrases are explained with more information, often in one or two pages.

If you want explicit descriptions of terms that we don't often encounter outside of sociology, or of terms that have a different meaning within sociology, this book will definitely help you.You will be able to write your papers more confidently knowing that you fully understand the sociological concepts.

Even though I no longer study sociology, I am happy to see this dictionary still resting on my bookshelf because I remember what a great help it was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Value
This is a great dictionary, but how much information do you really think fits into such a small book? I found it useful for my purposes as an undergraduate student, but I'd personally like to own one of those big fancy sociological dictionaries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Guide
For any student of sociology, this is a welcomed addition to textbooks. The dictionary is also a good addition to the library of someone who just enjoys reading sociology books. It has a bit of a British flair because of its authors, but is really a well-rounded and insightful reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perspective From an Instructor
While there are other dictionaries out there that do a better job, for the price of this dictionary it is a great reference for Introduction toSociology students.Definitions range from a few words to a couple ofpages.Usually gives a reference to an author connected to the term andother concepts that might be important to the term.Still there are keyconcepts missing (for instance a definition of methodology) that make thisbook problematic. This book is not written from a particular standpoint, but at times the definitions are classical. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook material.
This book is easy to read and explains terminology well. Great textbook for students to learn about and understand sociology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for a textbook
As other college students will know, textbooks vary primarily by writing style. The content is set by committees somewhere, and the writer must meet those requirements to be allowed to sell books. That leaves writing style and structure.Lisa McIntyre writes in a clear and friendly voice which eases the process of absorbing a great deal of information in this "not my major field" subject. She also structures her presentation well. The "Stop & Review" questions presented after important information will prove useful in giving context to those actually seeking to learn about sociology; the chapter-end reviews ease the process for the rest of us.The combined glossary and index came as a surprise to me but has proven useful.

Having only one author probably improves the process as well; I have another textbook with conflicting information and jarring changes of "voice," annoyances which McIntyre eliminates by doing the work herself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome change for a textbook

4-0 out of 5 stars A Basic Introduction to Sociology
The author of this competent introduction to sociology is Dr. Zgourides, a former Eastern Orthodox priest.Dr. Zgourides previously authored several publications that engaged with coping strategies for dealing with anxiety and stress, including "Anxiety Disorders: A Rational-Emotive Perspective" (Macmillan, 1991)and "Don't Let Them Psych You Out!" (Loompanics Unlimited, 1993).

After his tour at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, Dr. Zgourides has fluttered, at times anxiously, about a wide variety of halls of higher and further education across America. He has worked or continues to work as a clinical psychologist, certified acudetox specialist, massage therapist, and volunteer healthcare chaplain with specialties in mind-body psychology, anxiety disorders and phobias, sexuality, addictions, pastoral issues, and Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches to healing. He has held a wide variety of full-time and part-time positions at such institutions as New Mexico Military Institute (Roswell, New Mexico), Capella University (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Dallas Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (Dallas, TX), Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon), and the University of Portland (Portland, Oregon), where he was previously a tenured Assistant Professor of Psychology. Dr. Zgourides currently maintains a writing/consulting practice and assists as a staff researcher at Parker College of Chiropractic's Research Institute in Dallas, Texas. His wife, Christie Zgourides, is a former lecturer at a small Oregon liberal arts college and is now an online instructor of writing for Kaplan College, a for-profit corporation owned by the Washington Post Group.

With these credentials, Dr Zgourides has written a sound introduction to sociology, summarizing the major points of current sociological knowledge. After introducing readers to competing sociological perspectives and basic research methods, he discusses culture and socialization, social groups and social organization, crime and deviance, social and global stratification, race and ethnicity, sex and gender, economics and politics, education and statism, family, religion, health, population, mass media, and social movements in the context of social change.

Dr. Zgourides advises to "Ask and answer the following questions when deciding the validity of a piece of social research: Are the sociologists qualified to conduct sociological studies? What are their credentials? Are the sociologists associated with an academic institution, laboratory, or clinic?" (p26).As a participant observer amongst various institution engaged with the social sciences, Dr. Zgourides has an experienced eye for spotting what isn't right, which is reflected in this sound introduction to the field of sociology. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A "classic" that is now quite archaic
Weber's book was groundbreaking when it was first published.Even today, it is considered a classic. However, the reader should be informed that Weber's book is full of white Germanic Christian bias, a bias so strong attimes that it harms the author's credibility. However, if read in tandemwith later works which critique it, Weber's "Sociology ofReligion" provides a glimpse of early 20th century sociologicalmethodology

Using an open systems model as a framework, it shows the formal organization of schools with structure, goals and processes; the informal organization with hidden curriculum, organization climate, etc.; the external environment that influences what goes on in the school, including financing, parent(s), community interest groups, etc.; processes such as stratification and change; higher education. Diagrams show interrelationships between topics. For educators and anyone interested in the sociology of education and schools.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mistitled
I bought this book hoping to gain some insight into the social nature of education in order to back up some research that I am currently conducting on the Japanese education system. However, I was a bit disappointed that this book covers social and political issues in regards to the American education system. If you're interested in that kind of information, then this might be of use to you, but if you're looking for a book on the sociology of education, then this is not it.It should be retitled "The Sociology of the American Education System".Another complaint is that the writing style is not very academic--what you might expect from a high school AP course or perhaps a community college course.I really recommend trying another textbook if you want in depth analysis of the sociology of education. ... Product Description

In today's world, people's perceptions of various individuals, countries, races, genders, schools, and even companies are often affected by the sports they watch, read about, or listen to. The impact of sport on these perceptions is covered extensively in Contemporary Issues in Sociology of Sport. This text provides some of the best contemporary writing and research on the sociology of sport.

The text is organized into 12 learning units and includes 34 articles from writers and researchers with varied backgrounds. Introductions are provided for each of the units. They include brief summaries of the articles that follow and probing study questions that challenge the reader to think critically about the material.

Edited by Andrew Yiannakis, PhD, and Merrill J. Melnick, PhD, Contemporary Issues in Sociology of Sport includes
-an exploration of topics and themes that have received limited attention in other sociology of sport texts but have been long-standing social concerns,

-a review of the attitudes toward female athletes and the anti-homosexual phobias present in sport,

-an in-depth look at the impoverishment of children's games in America,

-an overview of high school sport participation,

-a study of the challenges and benefits of the big-time collegiate sport experience,

-a critique of television's impact on sport and its portrayal of gender and race, and

-a review of sport and globalization.
Unit I provides the reader with a historical background on the development of sociology of sport and addresses several critical issues about the relationship between sociology, physical education, and sociology of sport. The text includes an explanation of the growth of the sociology of sport field since 1980, the emergence and growth of the New Physical Education, and a review of the emerging field of sport pedagogy.

Unit II illustrates the power and influence of sport on American values, attitudes, behaviors, and cultural practices and its manifestations in our interpersonal and gender relations.

Unit III examines whether adult-controlled sport programs are good for children. The authors explore the Little League phenomenon, which they contrast and compare with the spontaneous culture of free play.

Unit IV examines the positive and negative effects of high school sport participation, in relationship to other extracurricular activities, on the educational and developmental experiences of student-athletes.

Unit V explores the realities, demands, and opportunities created by commercialized, high-visibility collegiate sports and their effects on athletes and universities.

Unit VI illustrates and examines how race-related discriminatory practices continue to manifest themselves in the world of sport. Specific topics include the allocation of playing positions by race, the use of racially insensitive team names, and racial stratification in professional sport.

Unit VII focuses on the social construction of feminine, masculine, and heterosexualized bodies within exercise and sport-related contexts.

Unit VIII explores the ways sport produces and reproduces the gender order while serving as “contested terrain” with respect to the construction of feminine and masculine gender scripts.

Unit IX explores the mass media's coverage of selected athletes and their sports, and how heavily mediated representations influence perceptions of race, class, gender, and sexuality.

Unit X examines the underlying causes of deviance in sport and focuses on such activities as larceny, drug use, and aggression outside of sport.

Unit XI explores the role and structure of alternative sport communities, especially in creating and maintaining personal identity, in satisfying psychological needs, and in providing contexts for resistance to dominant sport ideologies.

Unit XII reviews the influence of Americanization and globalization processes on local sport cultures and practices.

Contemporary Issues in Sociology of Sport is a must-read for anyone interested in a better understanding of the social significance of sport.

Product Description
An effective supplement to any standard sociology text, this broad and comprehensive sociological description of five diverse contemporary societies with wide geographic distribution - Japan, Mexico, Egypt, Germany, and the Bushmen of Namibia - is organized around basic sociological topics: culture, social structure, group life, socialization, deviance, social institutions, social stratification, and social change. Fictional vignettes of individuals in each country help students experience first-person viewpoints on life in five very different societies. By comparing other societies with their own, students read about the range of social variation, learn what makes their own society distinctive, and gain a unique and fascinating vantage point on what sociology offers in a world of rapid social change. The fifth edition has been fully updated to reflect recent economic and political changes. New and updated data is included in each chapter. Current concerns such as crime, drug trafficking, ethnic diversity, gender, income inequality, political Islam and social change in traditional societies are addressed throughout the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction
I found this book by Richard Osbourne to be an excellent introduction to sociology. He maintains a good balance between breadth and depth, wisely choosing to meaningfully probe the main ideas of sociology rather than disorienting the reader with esoteric details. With less than 200 cartoon-laden pages to work with, I anticipated that Osbourne's treatment may be relatively superficial, but I was pleased to find that this actually a fairly thorough introduction which gives the reader plenty to think about.

To give a sense of the scope of this book and the subject of sociology, here's my list of the key points:

(1) Sociology is concerned with how and why societies work and change.

(2) Doing sociology well requires the ability to look at a society as objectively as possible (like an alien), but this ideal is never achieved in practice.Instead, sociology tends to change with the societies it examines.

(3) Sociology faces many methodological difficulties, including theory-ladeness of observation.

(4) Sociology began when Enlightenment rationality challenged traditional ideas about how society should be organized. The aspiration was for sociology to be a science, modeled on the natural sciences.Arguably, this hasn't been achieved, and instead we have a plurality of sociological perspectives which are neither individually nor collectively adequate.Perhaps the best we can hope for is that, by using an eclectic approach, we can have partial explanatory and predictive power for some specific domains and questions.

(5) Sociology can challenge conventional assumptions in a way that can be disturbing, and some sociologists deliberately pursue social agendas rather than aiming for value-free description and analysis.

(6) Societies are abstractions in the sense of being made up of individuals, but they're real in the sense of having emergent characteristics of their own which are preserved as individuals are replaced. The same applies to social institutions.

(7) Societies have been and are quite diverse, and each society is associated with a culture. Language is a key element of culture.

(8) Smaller societies tend to have closer and more personal relationships, with substantial social conformity.Larger societies tend to have more impersonal relationships, with greater diversity and division of labor.

(9) Societies and individuals reciprocally shape each other. The larger influence is usually that of societies on individuals (socialization), which limits the possibility of true individualism, but some rare individuals are exceptions.

(10) Societies can be stable for long periods of time, but they can also rise and decline, and the declines can be rapid. In the modern era, many societies have grown and changed rapidly.

(11) One view, which is no longer widely accepted, is that societies evolve through stages, developing from simple to complex, possibly with functionally fitter societies (and institutions) outcompeting weaker ones.

(12) Many factors have been proposed as having a major influence in maintaining and changing societies, such as collective morality, natural feelings of solidarity, conflict between groups (eg, classes), competition, alliances, economics, religious and other ideologies, propaganda, collective symbolism, rational analysis, and education.

(13) Globalization is breaking down barriers and bringing diverse societies into closer contact. It's unclear how this will play out in terms of homogenization versus differentiation of cultures.

(14) The extent to which society can be deliberately reshaped is an open question.

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking an introduction to sociology. The reader will come away with at least some insight into how societies work and change, along with an appreciation for why sociology is a subject of perplexing difficulty.

For readers who like this book, I also recommend How Societies Change (Sociology for a New Century Series) by Daniel Chirot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice primer, and a nice addition to the Introducing series
This is a slim, well-constructed and very well illustrated graphic text that is an excellent primer to the tradition of sociology. While some inclusions may cause some head scratching in the States (this is from the UK and covers the sociological tradition there, which for the most is overlapping). Overall, this truly is a great little book.

While I usually don't write reviews, I do think it's worth providing one here in lieu of the only other review posted.

In regards to that review, Zonoras:

1) Is reviewing a copy that is two editions out of date (judging by talk of the cover). The contents has significantly changed as the discipline has changed.

2) Doesn't appear to understand the focus or purpose of the discipline.

3) Seems to be negatively reviewing this brief overview not for being inaccurate in its covering of the discipline, but because it accurately covers important areas in the discipline that he/she has a bone to pick with (the "crack-pipes" of Marxism and Radical Feminism).

4)Is negatively reviewing the book because it - like the vast majority of mainstream sociology - is not inclusive of evolutionary psychology (also known as sociobiology). Both sociologists and biologists are somewhat dismissive of this approach, but regardless, this book isn't Introducing Sociobiology, and needless to say, doesn't deserve to be negatively reviewed for not covering topics it has no reason covering.

5)Finally, seemssomewhat confused (e.g. lumping the "PC New Left" with "Neoconservatism" is strange, saying sociology is *mainly* about the study of economic inequality and then lambasting Marxism is even odder).

Overall, there are certainly some things I would have done slightly differently if I was writing for a US audience, but this book is still worth a five star review. I'd disagree with the two star review given, and vehemently disagree with it given that the reasons for this review seem to have much more to do with the reader's dislike of sociology than the actual contents of text.

2-0 out of 5 stars Society.
_Introducing Sociology_ by Richard Osborne and heavily-illustrated surrealistic-comic-book-style by Borin Van Loon gives a beginner's outline to the science, study, discipline or whatever you want to call it, of sociology.Sociology attempts to figure out how society, especially how the ever-increasingly complex, modern Western societies are constructed, structured, operate, interact, and what the role of class, race, gender and above all, economics, plays in them. This book goes through all the major theories and thinkers, but is overly-confused by smoke from the crack-pipes of Marxism and radical feminism.A central point is noted toward the end of the book:that of the transformation of the West in the 19th and 20th centuries from an agricultural, Christian and aristocratic base to industrialism, secularism, pleasure-seeking hedonism and sensualism. This is the root of the predicament that Western society is in today, but you won't hear a whole lot about it in the PC New Left and neoconservative academia. The author also dismisses in an offensively condescending manner sociobiology and the evoloutionary Darwinist perspective--that the determining factors of how different cultural groups, races and genders in society act are rooted in heredity rather than in social conditioning. This of course will lead to "racism and the holocaust."_Introducing Sociology_ is a rather quirky yet serious overview of sociology, and the author at the end admits that he cannot come to any decisive conclusion about the study of society in our ever-morphing postmodern world, where individuals live in "hyperreality"; learning more from mass-media and its contrived, false images than from the real world itself.I wish I knew the reasoning behind the cover illustration, a half-human, half-robot woman in a bikini with a human embryo attached to her hip in a huge test-tube, reading a book upside down. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Text for Social Disparities In Illness
I have to believe that this is the number one text in studying the field of Medical Sociology that exists in the market. It gives a comprehensive and thorough view of the health care system, with particular reference to the USA. It's viewpoint is that disease, a biological condition, and illness, how society reacts to disease is a social construction. This book takes aim at how society as a whole victimizes and discriminates against the disabled and ill, based upon subjective prejudices. It pays close attention to gender, race, age, and socio-economic status and how those interweaved factors, play into the fate of an indivduals health over a life time. Very easy to read, and the authors knowledge on the topic is superb. I would recommend this text to anyone in the health care industry.
