Book Description
The Textbook of Sports Medicine provides comprehensive coverage of both basic science and clinical aspects of sports injury and physical activity. More than one hundred of the World's leading authorities within exercise physiology, clinical internal medicine, sports medicine and traumatology have contributed with evidence-based state-of-the-art chapters to produce the most complete integration ever of sports medicine science into one book.

Great attention has been given to providing balanced coverage of all aspects of sports medicine, with respect to the relevance and clinical importance of each area. The book isolates solid principles and knowledge, and the documentation to support these, as well as identifying areas where further scientific investigation is needed. The topics dealt with and the degree of detail in the individual chapters, makes the book ideal for both educational programs at University level within exercise science and sports medicine, as well as for post-graduate courses within all aspects of sports medicine.

In addition, the book will be excellent as a reference book in any place where professionals whether doctors, exercise scientists, physiotherapists or coaches are dealing with supervision or treatment of sports-active individuals. Finally, the book is well structured to act as an introduction to research in the field of sports medicine. ... Read more

Book Description

A.J.Liebling's classic New Yorker pieces on the "sweet science of bruising" bring vividly to life the boxing world as it once was.It depicts the great events of boxing's American heyday: Sugar Ray Robinson's dramatic comeback, Rocky Marciano's rise to prominence, Joe Louis's unfortunate decline. Liebling never fails to find the human story behind the fight, and he evokes the atmosphere in the arena as distinctly as he does the goings-on in the ring--a combination that prompted Sports Illustrated to name The Sweet Science the best American sports book of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cut-rate Mencken but still entertaining...
If you like boxing and reading, then you are truly a rara avis. But if you do happen to belong to such a tiny cohort, then this book should provide a couple hours' entertainment.

Liebling tries too hard to emulate H.L. Mencken's style, and he doesn't have the chops for it...but, at the same time, he knows how to describe the action inside the ring. (Not as well as Jack London, but well enough.) At all times, you sense the depth of his love for boxing.

Another reason to recommend this book is that Joyce Carol Oates thinks Liebling was a racist. (I know, I know...who the hell is Joyce Carol Oates?) If you read the book, you'll discover that he wasn't...and a few more things besides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rest In Peace;Floyd....
The late, great Floyd Patterson, who became the first heavyweight to regain the title after losing it,is as good a reason as any to name a book about boxing,'The Sweet Science'.In this particular case,'A.J. Liebling's masterpiece about boxing(mostly
in the fifties)was voted the best sports book ever, by Sports Illustrated. The incredibly colorful characters Liebling focuses on would be hard to beat by any writer in any field, even if he may not have gotten all of it right. For example,he seems to actually get along with Rocky Marciano's manager,Al Weill, even though evidence elsewhere suggests that Rocky may have retired to get away from him.And I think he resorted to cliche in describing Irish Billy Graham as as "good as a fighter can be without being a hell of a fighter"(p.250);Graham is a Hall of Famer who was robbed in a welterweight title fight against Kid Gavilan-and my (Jewish) uncle idolized him.But Liebling, who wrote on "serious subjects" for 'The New Yorker'and was an award winning war reporter, attended the first fight ever held in Yankee Stadium in 1923-and remained optimistic about the future through the lens of boxing, concludes,"I reflected with satisfaction that old Ahab(Archie)Moore could have whipped all four principals on that card within 15 rounds, and that while (Jack)Dempsey may have been a great champion,he had less to beat than Marciano.I felt the satisfaction because it proved that the world isn't going backward,if you can just stay young enough to remember what it was rewally like when you were really young."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!
I've been searching for this book for years.I'm from Brockton, MA and I certainly appreciate great boxing prose. The new intro really adds nothing to the book and Mr.Anasi even gets Ezzard Charles' name wrong--calls him "Ezra" in the intro--which also indicates poor editing. Leibling gives you the total world of a great fight--not just whats going on in the ring but the world surrounding the fight.Very real, often funny, thoroughly engaging.I want to read more of his stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boxing as culture
When asked which is the best book on boxing ever written, anyone with any inclination towards the literary side of The Manly Art will instinctively site Liebling's classic collection of essays written in the early '50s collected in this volume. On the evidence here, I cannot dispute the consensus.Liebling gives you not a history or a list of profiles of boxers but an entire world and a culture. He captures the feel of going to a boxing match in the early '50s, the crowds, the managers, the trainers and assorted characters. The best thing you can say about a piece of literature is that it places you in the action, you can physically feel that you are there and present.I have read no other book on Boxing that accurately captures this the way Liebling does in The Sweet Science. He's also an accomplished and erudite writer, a highly cultured man who brings that cultural sensitvity to something often considered, by those ignorant of these things, to be base and low-brow.

The fighters themselves - Marciano, Moore, Sadler, Robinson, Patterson, Farr - come across less as legends and more as contemporary sportsmen. It seems incredible to me that once upon a time you could just buy a ticket and stroll into the Marciano-Moore fight! For me, that fight and many others was the stuff of mythology and yet Liebling succeeds in making it real and tangible.

Final note:anyone who after reading this feels an uncontrollable lust to acquire Pierce Egan's Boxiana volumes will be enthralled to know that there is a company in Canada, Nicol Island Publishing, who have published at least three of the total of five volumes.Unfortunately, Amazon does not seem to sell any of them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sports Writing
Even if you have limited interest in boxing, as do I, Liebling's book is valuable for it's clarity, brilliant character studies and evocation of the dusty corners of an America a short time gone, but a long time past.Fights come alive between real people who seem distracted and confused as often as competitive and driven. The steady but laconic approach of Marciano contrasts with the skilled but overmatched class of Archie Moore.Fights are watched by roomfuls of men smoking and wearing snap brim hats. There is no media aside from Liebling, the ultimate insider, comparing what he sees to his favorite reportage of English fights from the prior century.

I would read more from the same author. This is stylish writing, great sports journalism and an invitation to post-war American boxing.I would rank this with the best of Angell on baseball. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diving Science
I purchased this book to give me more information on the science of scuba diving for my Dive Con and Dive Instructor courses.

The book give detailed information on the various theories, gas laws and how theyinteract with the human body.Examples of real life stories are also given.

If you are interested in get truly advanced knowledge of the effects of scuba diving on the body, I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Friendly Science for divers
Drs Strauss and Aksenov have achieved a remarkable coup. They have written a rigorously scientific book, but still made it understandable to the diving lay person. If you flunked Science 101, don't be put off by the "Science" in the title. You will love this book. It is meticulouslyset out with illustrations and tables that make the text even more clear. The language is friendly, with explanations -in plain English-of terms that might be new to the reader. The medical subject matter is carefully handled, so that conditions can be understood in the context of physiology. It clearly explains the rationale for treatment .I referred a recreational diver with a problem to this book. She got a clear understanding of her alternobaric vertigo, the physiology behind the problem, and thus the reason for the way to prevent it.

The subject matter covered is comprehensive, well referenced and indexed. It would be of interest not only to diving or medical professionals but makes great reading for the recreational diver who wants to know more than basic training. A nice touch is the "Further Review" in the form of questions to test comprehension of the chapter content.

This is an outstanding volume and most readable for the interested lay person. It would also make a great introductory text for students of hyperbaric medicine who need a good overview of the subject of Diving Science.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning the medical and scientific aspects of diving
For a good many students in a scuba class, "diving science" means memorizing just enough facts about the gas laws to answer the multiple choice questions in the tests, and perhaps a few other physiological facts affecting the human body underwater. They'll remember to never hold your breath while scuba diving and not to exceed ascend rates or bottom times. However, a few individuals want to know more about the underlying science of diving, and they should read Diving Science by Doctors Michael Strauss and Igor S. Aksenov who are both hyperbaric medicine experts as well as experienced divers.

Diving Science is sort of a mix between medical textbook and general purpose reading for an interested non-medical audience. The writing style is clear and concise so that it can easily be understood, but it never talks down to the reader. Expect a good share of medical terms and terminology, but everything is well explained and illustrated. The overall purpose of the book is to help divers anticipate, recognize, understand, and react to the physical, physiological and psychological stresses encountered in recreational diving.

Diving Science is organized into three major sections:

The first -- The Underwater Environment -- explains the basics of diving, not unlike what one learns in a diving certification course but with considerably more detail.

The second -- Physiological Responses to the Underwater Environment -- describes in detail how the various parts of the human body react to diving: heart and vascular system, the respiratory system, blood and muscles, and how the body reacts in cold water, how it best moves and orients itself. This section also contains fascinating comparisons betwen human divers and diving mammals. For example, did you know they breathe out before they dive, not in?

The third, and longest, section deals with the Medical Aspects of Sports Diving. That includes medical preparation, fitness and nutrition, and then the numerous potential problems a diver may encounter on the surface, while descending, while at the bottom, and while ascending. This third part reads a bit more like a medical textbook but frequent Bringing it all Together summaries that describe real world scenarios help readers understand.

The book closes with an excellent Diving Medicine from A to Z appendix that concisely describes numerous diving facts, and reference sections on diving organizations, medical texts and manuals, recommended equipment and supplies, a very detailed glossary, suggested reading, and even a list of luminaries in diving medicine.

Overall, Diving Science should be required reading for anyone who wants to know more about the medical and scientific aspects of diving than what is included in the certification class manuals. While there is a lot of medical detail, readers also learn numerous interesting facts and statistics as well as how all this science affects divers in specific real world scenarios.

5-0 out of 5 stars DIVING SCIENCE
"DIVING SCIENCE" is an outstanding resource book for both professional and recreational diver's. It serves as my personal "Diver's Bible." I considered the book important enough, with reespect to diving safety, that I presented a copy to the Diving Medical Doctor for the Island of Maui, Hawaii - one of world's top diving destinations. I am particularly impressed with the book layout and ease of reference; the presentation of material is exceptionally clear and concise. The chapter previews, images and diagrams are also convenient. "DIVING SCIENCE" should be recognized as a model for all other practical science manuals!
John Dunbar, Adventure Enthusiast and U.S. Navy SEAL (retired)

5-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Medicine
The book "Diving Science" is the best source I have found for understanding divers and scuba related injury and illness. It is detailed enough to provide an excellent understanding of why certain events occur and organized so that it can be used as a quick reference when an emergency physician is evaluating a patient for the potential of diving related pathology. One might think this resource should only be included in the basic reference library of emergency departments near the ocean, but scuba is a rapidly expanding sport in fresh water as well as salt water. In addition, because a plane flight can precipitate a diving related problem, every emergency physician, regardless of where he or she works, will need to confront the possibility of diving related pathology. "Diving Science" is enjoyable and useful reading for any physician with a sense of curiosity and the drive to continue to learn.I strongly recommend this book as a primary emergency department resource.

Book Description
The first reference to look specifically at how elite athletes are developed

Expert Performance in Sports: Advances in Research on Sport Expertise presents an overview of the critical issues facing researchers who study how athletes reach—and stay at—the pinnacle of their sports. The text will allow you to update your knowledge of sport expertise with the most current research and practical applications for the development of sport expertise in athletes, referees, and judges.

This comprehensive reference reflects both theoretical underpinnings and future directions in the understanding of sport expertise research and is the first book to look specifically at how elite athletes are developed.

Editors Janet L. Starkes and K. Anders Ericsson identify the questions typically asked in the study of sport expertise; they provide a stimulating, scientific debate that addresses the question of whether a general theory of expert performance is achievable; and they conclude with a glimpse of future directions for research on sport expertise.

This new reference answers controversial questions that arise with regard to the training of high-level performers:

• How can you potentially speed up the acquisition process?
• How easy or difficult is it for experts to retain high performance levels as they age?
• How can coaches structure practices to maximize active time and preparation for the next competition?
• What is the role of coaches and mentors who work with elite performers?
• What aspects of performance best reflect expert behaviors in a particular sport—anticipation, perceptual accuracy, decision speed, attention focus, response selection, response consistency, strategy, or others?

With Expert Performance in Sports, you not only can read about sport expertise research but also find out how athletes and coaches benefit the most. "Experts' Comments" at the end of each chapter present the opinions of two world-class experts, Therese Brisson and Nick Cipriano. These experts' opinions bridge the gap between the research presented and its practical applications. Dr. Therese Brisson's academic training is in motor behavior; she also is an Olympic gold medalist, silver medalist, and six-time world champion in ice hockey. Professor Nick Cipriano is both an academic and an international-level wrestling coach. He is a former international-level wrestler and world-renowned coach in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, and he has coached both male and female athletes from the high school level to the Olympic team.

This is a must-have reference that will challenge researchers to identify both their theoretical underpinnings and future directions in their study of how the best excel at sports. ... Read more

I very rarely write reviews, but felt compelled to review this book. This book is basically useless. You will learn precious little to improve your tennis game. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good introductory read for students of biomechanics
This book would be best for a student in an introductory biomechanics class who has interest in its application to sport. An addition audience may be those interested in the topic, but want a text that is lighter on the math, or at least balances the tendency to recite derivations of formulae ad nauseum with concise interpretations of data. This is often what keeps people interested in the topic away. A particularly interesting part of the book is the author's explanation of how to use excel to model data, allowing the reader some "lab" time if they so desire. The book also covers the topics of aero- and hydrodynamics, something that many biomechanics texts either do not do or do poorly. I highly recommend this book to beginner and intermediate students of biomechanics, especially those interested in its application to sports rehabilitation or performance. ... Read more
