Book Description
The bicycle is almost unique among human-powered machines in that it uses human muscles in a near-optimum way. This new edition of the bible of bicycle builders and bicyclists provides just about everything you could want to know about the history of bicycles, how human beings propel them, what makes them go faster, and what keeps them from going even faster. The scientific and engineering information is of interest not only to designers and builders of bicycles and other human-powered vehicles but also to competitive cyclists, bicycle commuters, and recreational cyclists.

The third edition begins with a brief history of bicycles and bicycling that demolishes many widespread myths. This edition includes information on recent experiments and achievements in human-powered transportation, including the "ultimate human- powered vehicle," in which a supine rider in a streamlined enclosure steers by looking at a television screen connected to a small camera in the nose, reaching speeds of around 80 miles per hour. It contains completely new chapters on aerodynamics, unusual human-powered machines for use on land and in water and air, human physiology, and the future of bicycling. This edition also provides updated information on rolling drag, transmission of power from rider to wheels, braking, heat management, steering and stability, power and speed, and materials. It contains many new illustrations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bike Nerd Heaven
As Miss Jean Brodie said, "For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like." She meant it as an insult, but I don't. Bicycling Science is nerd heaven, full of physics, engineering, molecular biology, aerodynamics and all kinds of other scientific manna. If you have an appetite for charts, graphs, and research studies, then this book will delight you with its explanations of why bikes work so well with the human body.

It's not casual reading by any means. I'd prefer the same information presented in slightly less academic tones, but that doesn't mean it isn't accurate or interesting. So I dip into my copy for short bursts. For me, it's not a cover-to-cover read, but it's been on my bedside table for months because I pick it up regularly.

Bicycling Science may well be more technical info than a casual fan can absorb. However, it's a great reference that will demystify your bike -- if that's the sort of thing you like.

3-0 out of 5 stars between a "read it" book and a "reference book" and not very good as either
While I recommend it, I don't recommend you expect a real engineering reference or good reading cover-to-cover. It is somewhere in between and as such is not very good as either.

The charts and plots are good so if you only want it for that it's a great compilation of other sources and references. The history of the bicycle and the HPV chapters are very interesting. The book is one of a very few like it so "one of the best" is not that great of a compliment.

It is layed out and presented as an engineering reference type book on a specific topic (something like a Mark's for bikes) but it's nowhere near as consistent, rigorous, or detailed. A better description would be "musings on bicycle design and science" by someone who is genuinely very knowledgeable on the topic.

My biggest problem is with the narrative. It has way too many opinions. Many are simply some ideas the author has about a particular design or test (there's no data in this area but one way to get some would be this...). It also has way too much anecdotal evidence which is (thankfully) usually presented as such. And worst of all there are many opinions that are generally made to sound like facts through casual use of expressions such as "future testing should..." "it is recommended" "conventional design practices" "according to some" and so on.

To sum up if you are an engineer looking for an engineering reference you'll be disappointed. If you are a lay bike geek you'll probably find it too technical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used the book mainly to write a report on the history of recumbent bicycles. But it is an excellent source for bike history and science in general. David Gordon Wilson goes into great detail, both conceptually and technically, with regard to bike issues, such as aerodynamics.

4-0 out of 5 stars too much for me
I like science.I like bicycles. This book goes into much greater depth than most people will want.I couldn't even finish it.If you build bikes and/or are a physicist or engineer and like biking then you will probably enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Definitely a good book for bike nerds like myself. Really technical and thick reading. If you like stuff like that, then get this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Colgan is my husband's most trusted source for sports nutrition and exercise!
I bought this book for my husband, who lives by the first Sports Nutrition Guide by Dr. Colgan. His old book has significant signs of wear and tear from overuse, so I thought my husband would be happy to receive Dr. Colgan's more recent publication of Sports Nutrition and I was right! Now he's constantly referring and comparting and incorporating the information he finds in this book into his health regime!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sports Nutrition Guide
I am not sure about this book.It is very informative. It is easy to read and comprehend but it tends to stear me in another direction since this book tends to down the ADA (American Dietetic Association). The book is broken down into individual chapters about each mineral and vitamin and what it does to your body if you're an athlete.I am a nutritional consultant and never really learned much about sports nutrition in school. This is my first book on sports nutrition so I really have no comparision.Like I stated before, it tends to go against my believe system and the knowledge I have gained in clinical nutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you, this is for everyone!
Not just "athletes."Essentially, this is an update to Colgan's popular "Sports Nutrition Guide" from 1993.Along with Dr. andrew Weil, Colgan is one of the only "doctors" who truly understands how degraded our food supply is relative to what is natural and healthy, and even more so than Weil, Colgan really tells it like it is and lays it on thick!i have been a long time follower of Colgan, and credit him for much of my success in bodybuilding, powerlifting, and professionally as a Personal Trainer.Colgan helped me on my way to becomming a trainer with much enhanced knowledge of nutrition that helped many a client achieve amazing results (especially compared to the knucklehead trainers who told their overweight clients to eat a bagle for breakfast, and/or to do more cardio to lose fat!).Colgan does not take any balogna from mainstream western medicine and the mess it has created, instead, he will expose the lies and show you the truth in a way that your intuition (and any research, if you have doubts), will assure you is correct!

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational! For everyone to read.
As there are many books on the market concerning this topic, this one actually explains step by step why each supplement is important in our diet. A must read for anyone that is serious about a healthy lifestyle.
Do not hesitate to buy this book, you will not regret any of its pages.
Just look at the pictures of Dr. Michael Colgan for the results!

5-0 out of 5 stars Colgan does it again!
Colgan has done it again with this excellent book on optimal nutrition.Whether you are an athlete or not, this book is full of practical and useful information on how to optimize your nutritional profile.Keying in on an exponentially growing field of health and wellness nutrition and neutraceuticals, Colgan gives it to you straight. No holds barred.

You will enjoy this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art and Science of Pitching
This is a wonderful resource for understanding all that goes into throwing and pitching effectively and I have only started with the book. Look forward to the rest of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just exactly what the title says
It is a good book for anyone wanting to learn about mechanics( and I mean broke down to a science)of pitching.Great tips in there from top guys too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Everybody...Not just High School Kids
I wouldn't go as far as saying you can find most of the information in this book on the website. That's not the case at all. You can find a little bit of the information from this book ont the website but not very much. This book presents the pitching information in a very simple format making it very easy to find whatever you are looking for. It includes drills to correct many of the problems pitchers now-a-days are having. It is a very good book, and it's probably the best pitching book to date. Tom House is a very reputable source and is called by some the "pitching guru." If you are a coach, a player, a curious parent, or a student of the game/pitching, you'll want this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pitching Instruction
Book gives technical background, instruction, and drills for pitchers. This is a must book for any pitcher.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for high school pitchers
The A&S of Pitching offers up a nice mix of information on pitching mechanics, functional strength, drills, and nutrition. Tom House fans andmembers of his National Pitching Association probably are not going to find any new "ground breaking" material in this book. Much of what's here also is on the NPA website -- and in House's other books on pitching (he's got at least six of them). Yet, this still is beneficial for intermediate skill level coaches, parents, and players - particularly high schoolers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Advance Soccer Progress
This is a fairly academic look at the world of soccer. Covering everything from psychology, physiology and diet. For those coaches out there who need that extra edge this is highly recommended. However it would not be ideal for those coaches just starting out, or with a youth squad.

The book bravely covers a lot of ground, and so can provide some sound insight into some parts of the game that are left out of standard coaching manuals.

It would not, however, suit readers who want to know particular information about the changes in biology during a game or other in depth science such as that. ... Read more
