5-0 out of 5 stars Everything the Diver wants to know.
This is yet another of those books by the legendary Jacques Cousteau which were published in the early seventies and, in writing this series of reviews, I have found them to be as relevant today as they ever were.

In this particular book we have underwater photographs of the highest calibre. In fact some are so good it is hard to believe they are over 30 years old.As far as the factual content is concerned, I would suggest this book contains everything the modern scuba diver would ever want to know about Octopus and Squid.

Once again, I can only make the comment that this book is now out of print and only a small number remain available at this time.Having revisited the content after a gap of too many years, I still found this book to be an excellent read and I can only suggest all serious divers add a copy to their bookshelf before it finally becomes unavailable.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Treasure For Your Library
Cousteau's lifelong love of the ocean lives on!He and Philippe Diole wrote this very non-technical book that does a nice, thorough job of describing the general life and features of the octopus, with one chapter on the squid.(So if you love the squid, this is probably not your book.)Written in 1973, the book is still relevant at the beginning of the 21st century.Great full-page color photos of divers and beautiful octopi up close in the natural environment of the octopi; the photos alone are worth buying the book! The true value of the book, though, rests in Cousteau's firm belief (and mine, too) in the inherent intelligence found in the octopus, which has one of the more active brains among all sea creatures, and a comprehensive description of many phases of their lives. What you don't know about this shy, mysterious, and private creature will amaze you, and you will find out much by reading the book.A true treasure for anyone's library regardless of your age! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Putting the spectacular first.
The full title on this book's cover reads: "Life in the Oceans - The Spectacular World of Whales, Dolphins, Giant Squid, Sharks and other unusual Sea Creatures." I was, therefore expecting to find the section on Whales at the beginning - but straight away we are into the Great White Shark with it's great white teeth on the opening page.

This is an oversized book containing 125 pages of text and colour photographs. The images are not as exciting as I have come to expect from this author - who is renowned for her own photography.

Altogether something of a disappointment. Perhaps a smaller format would have fared better.

Product Description
This two-volume handbook offers a comprehensive and coordinated presentation of SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices), including device fundamentals, design, technology, system construction and multiple applications. It is intended to bridge the gap between fundamentals and applications, and will be a valuable textbook reference for graduate students and for professionals engaged in SQUID research and engineering. It will be also of use to specialists in multiple fields of practical SQUID applications, from human brain research and heart diagnostics to airplane and nuclear plant testing to prospecting for oil, minerals and buried ordnance.

The first volume contains chapters presenting the theory of SQUIDs, their fabrication from low- and high-temperature superconductors, the necessary readout electronics, and the design and performance of practical direct current (dc) and radio-frequency (rf) SQUIDs. This volume concludes with an overview of most important SQUID system issues. An appendix summarizes briefly the foundations of superconductivity that are necessary to understand SQUIDs. A glossary and tables of units and constants are also included.

The second volume is devoted to applications. It starts with an important aspect of the analysis of measured magnetic signals generated by current sources (the inverse problem), and includes several chapters devoted to various areas of application, namely biomagnetism (research on and diagnostics of human brain, heart, liver, etc.), detection of extremely weak signals, for example, electromagnetic radiation and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), measurement of various magnetic and electric properties, from fault detection in semiconductor circuits with SQUID microscopy to NDE (Non-Destructive Evaluation) of materials and structures such as bridges, airplanes and nuclear plant installations, and geomagnetic research and prospecting (including searching for military ordnance). The volume closes with a chapter on motion detectors and the detection of gravity waves. ... Read more

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the market in Africa face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying frozen, dried, salted, or brined cuttlefish, squid, and octopus including flours, meals, and pellets thereof for human consumption to Africa? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of frozen, dried, salted, or brined cuttlefish, squid, and octopus including flours, meals, and pellets thereof for human consumption vary from one country to another in Africa? Do exporters serving the market in Africa have similar market shares across the importing countries? On the supply side, Africa also sells to the international market of frozen, dried, salted, or brined cuttlefish, squid, and octopus including flours, meals, and pellets thereof for human consumption. Which countries in Africa supply the most exports of frozen, dried, salted, or brined cuttlefish, squid, and octopus including flours, meals, and pellets thereof for human consumption? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for frozen, dried, salted, or brined cuttlefish, squid, and octopus including flours, meals, and pellets thereof for human consumption in Africa. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for frozen, dried, salted, or brined cuttlefish, squid, and octopus including flours, meals, and pellets thereof for human consumption for those countries serving Africa via exports or supplying from Africa via imports. We do so for the current year based on a variety of key histo ... Read more
