5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for design professionals!
For over 70 years, architects have been using a valuable reference book, "Architectural Graphic Standards."

"Architectural Graphic Standards" (11th edition) is organized roughly per the UniFormat(r) classification system, i.e., by function instead of by product or material. This new edition has expanded and new content covering contemporary issues, such as LEED standards, green materials, sustainable construction, recyclability, new building systems, structural technologies, universal, and accessible design strategies, computing technologies including Building Information Modeling (BIM) and CAD/CAM, etc. It may take you a while to get used to this new format, but the information is still valuable and current.

"Architectural Graphic Standards" has 1120 pages (9.7 x 11.6 inches large format) and numerous line drawings. It is a must-have for architects, landscape architects and urban planners, interior designers, engineers or any other building-related design professionals.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's not all there
I'm really disappointed to find that my big, beatiful new edition of Architectural Graphic Standards does not contain everything that previous editions did. I was so happy to have my very own copy and now will have to also buy a 10th edition to get everything. Check it out before you buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source of information
I received the new Graphic Standards today. It is filled with lots of additional information. If one were to take the time and look through the whole book, they would find almost everything they are looking for.The layout is different from previous versions. All one has to do is re-familarize their self with the new layout and it won't be confusing.Oh yeah, and it gives great examples.

Thanks!

Try looking up "bathroom." You'll find them under "Inclusive Design/Accessible Design." The implication is that, if you're not including the handicapped in your concept for a powder room, for example, you're not being a good person.

This outwardly beautiful book is riddled with page after page of What to Think, not information useful toward a creative and practical design. Graphic standards have morphed here into a pompous treatise on Doing the "Right" Thing.

The moralist tone is so irritating that it's easy to overlook that the organization, in so far as it is deemed to be a reference book, is simply awful.

If you're looking for graphic standards, I suggest an earlier edition, any edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy the Tenth Edition if you can
To date, I've had to resort to previous editions of the Graphic Standards for most of my information. And I find it odd that a book titled graphic standards does not illustrate what the graphic conventions are.But it LOOKS PRETTY!

As for the CD-Rom, it has to be installed on the computer to use it, and the license agreement allows it to be installed on only one computer. ... Read more

I am a last semester interior design student and just bought this book-I wish I had had it from the start! The book has nice sections on historical periods and furniture dimensions, residential, office, hospitality, retail, health care, banking and public restroom spaces, with lots and lots of plans, elevations and sections for each category. There is also a general reference section at the back of the book with lots of tables (space planning, wall covering or yardage amounts, as well as electrical and math tables). As well there is a nice colored section of wood and marble samples-a real time saver indeed!

While there is a lot of information in this book, most of it is too small to read or see easily. Many of the drawings are too small and unclear. Also, the material is not presented in a way that makes it easy to access.I will be looking elsewhere for the information.I sent mine back in spite of the shipping cost.

Amazon.com
Standards, argues Jeffrey Zeldman in Designing With Web Standards, are our only hope for breaking out of the endless cycle of testing that plagues designers hoping to support all possible clients. In this book, he explains how designers can best use standards--primarily XHTML and CSS, plus ECMAScript and the standard Document Object Model (DOM)--to increase their personal productivity and maximize the availability of their creations. Zeldman's approach is detailed, authoritative, and rich with historical context, as he is quick to explain how features of standards evolved. It's a fantastic education that any design professional will appreciate.

Zeldman is an idealist who devotes some of his book to explaining how much easier life would be if browser developers would just support standards properly (he's done a lot toward this goal in real life, as well). He is also a pragmatist, who recognizes that browsers implement standards differently (or partially, or not at all) and that it is the job of the Web designer to make pages work anyway. Thus, his book includes lots of explicit and tightly focused tips (with code) that have to do with bamboozling non-compliant browsers into behaving as they should, without tripping up more compliant browsers. There's lots of coverage of design and testing tools that can aid in the creation of good-looking, standards-abiding documents. --David Wall

Topics covered: Why Web standards (such as XHTML, CSS, ECMAScript, and DOM) are good for everyone, and why site designers and browser makers should move towards standards compliance.Book Description
Best-selling author, designer, and web standards evangelist JeffreyZeldman has updated his classic, industry-shaking guidebook. This newedition--now in full color--covers improvements in best practices andadvances in the world of browsers since the first edition introducedthe world to standards-based design. Written in the same engaging andwitty style, making even the most complex information easy to digest,it remains an essential guide to creating sites that load faster, reachmore users, and cost less to design and maintain.

Readers willlearn from Jeffrey's insights as he demonstrates how web standards aredriving search engine friendliness ("findability") and the Web 2.0applications that have reinvigorated the medium and the onlinemarketplace. Readers will discover new techniques to make CSS layoutswork better across multiple browsers and ways to make web content moreaccessible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good content and discussion
I found it a very interesting book to read but it didn't give as much of concrete situation analysis as I expected. It surely convinced me to embrace techniques for the visually impaired and textual devices.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
It's a very good book, and one I'd recommend to any developer who is trying to make the switch from tables to CSS-based code and standards, but if you've been using standards in your work for a while this book will only tell you things you already know.

However, Zeldman's tone is always light and engaging, and sometimes it's good to have a little refresher.

5* if you're new to web standards
4* otherwise

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding
Zeldman is to be congratulated on this writing. The book approaches the topic of designing with web standards in a very practical manner. I recomment this book to developers, managers and site designers. This book does not teach you CSS, but rather it teaches you how to use CSSm XHTML, ECMA script and DOM to develop web sites according to standards.

I must say that Zeldman, among other good writing traits, has a pretty good sense of humor.

1-0 out of 5 stars not instructive
too much emphasis on Why you should be designing using web standards rather than what and how to implement them. not instructive at all. this is definately geared to the seasoned developer not for a newbie

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, very helpful.
This book is so helpful in my studies. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the profession, or students trying to get an edge in class.

5-0 out of 5 stars an architecture student's best friend
architectural graphic standard ALWAYS checked out in the library? and all you need to know is how wide the turning radius needs to be for this stupid parking lot? yea i've been there billions of times. my friends at school all started buying this book as a quick reference and it has great information inside. it's by no means exhaustive, but it definitely has enough to get a student by. the information is written and organized in a very accessible way. i highly recommend this book

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical architecturebook
I purchased this book because I had experience borrowing a copy of a friend. It helps when you want to keep working, but need to get specifics. This was you don't have to fish through the Internet for standards, they are easily available in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great quickreference...
The person who reviewed this book and gave it two stars was definitely unaware of what the book was meant to be.I would NEVER replace graphic standards or any other set of architectural data. However, it is a WONDERFUL quick reference guide for people just starting out in the field. It gives some easy ADA info, some AIA sheet numbering, and other easy to use reference material.I agree with the person that said an architecture student and intern would get the most use out of it.That said, it should be on every student's and intern's studio desk.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only very basic information, not intended for professionals!
I am a licensed architect, and have been in professional practice now for 15 years.I thought this book was going to offer me some of the common reference tables I need, or perhaps some of the general ADA measurements that must be exact, but it fell well short of my expectations.

It's not really suitable for anyone in the design profession, and I think much of the book is littered with detailing and CAD standards that are not necessary for your normal do-it-yourselfer or home builder.I think it may be appropriate for architecture students, however, it really does not have sufficient information to instruct students, and much of the material selection information and detailing is flat elementary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Architects/Designers
I've purchased this book for 2 companies that I've worked for and for myself as well.I am an Interior Designer and find Interior Graphic Standards to be extremly resourceful and helpful when it comes to design & planning. It covers a wide range of topics such as basic electrical, mechanical, accessibility standards, plumbing fixture considerations; material finish's, door frames/types, acoustics, etc. and provides enough information on each subject so that you understand what is required to plan. My only complaint is that in many cases, measurements and dimensions are not shown where you would think they should exist. That being said, I highly recommend the book for people of all levels in this industry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Targeted Primarily for Persons Doing Commercial Interior Design Projects
I already own AIA's Architectural Graphics Standards for Residential Construction, which is an excellent reference book for use in designing, planning, and building a new house or remodeling an existing one. Wanting more information for interior design of a house, I reviewed a copy of this book at the library. The book is primarily targeted to those persons doing interior design work on commercial projects. If you're looking for interior design help for a house, I would recommend buying AIA's Architectural Graphics Standards for Residential Construction to use as a reference and look for other books targeted specifically at residential interior design.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good handbook for interior details!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must have" book
This book has invaluable information for all gun enthusiasts, not only S & W collectors. Very well written and illustrated. A "must have" book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible
This book is indispensible to the S&W collector. It is the S&W collector's Bible. The cost of this volume will be saved three times over if you are a collector of S&W handguns. It ranges from the very first S&W handgun, to last year's models, revolvers and semi-auto pistols.

It contains color photos, engineering and production changes, pricing guidelines based on national averages, instructions on how to grade guns, a glossary, and appendixes to help determine year of manufacture by the serial number. It even contains chapters on S&W peripheral collecting, such as boxes and such.

If you do not own this book, and you are trading S&W handguns, you are operating blindly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and not a clone
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has proven to be a useful tool, offering better illustration of models and expanded listing of models and details over the more general guides. By comparison, the Standard Catalog provides 70 pages of Smith & Wesson listings, while the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson provides 432. The authors, Jim Supica and Richard Nahas are recognized as long standing experts in Smith and Wesson firearms, in both model identification and value.

The authors did an excellent job of identifying factors unique to S&W in value determination, including how S&W collectors might differ from others. Section One, as an example, covers S&W frame sizes and side plate screw counts, pinned and unpinned barrels and hand ejector models as they relate to model identification. Engraving is organized by artist, by time period and by source. NRA condition classifications are extended further into finish and factory refinish, modifications, serial number integrity and grips. I did not realize there was such a big market for S&W stocks. Not only are stocks addressed, but so are manuals and boxes.

The organization is good. Not appearing strictly in model number order or date of production, S&W revolvers are broken into groups such as "Tip Up", "Top Break", "Single Shot", "Early Hand Ejector", "Modern Hand Ejector", "Semi-Auto....". It really isn't so difficult for even a novice to navigate and there is a good solid model number index at the back of the book. Covered firearms are all S&W handguns through the S&W 460 and S&W 500 chambers, long guns, boxes, cases, and even AR 15 types of current production. Individual model entries are not sketchy. As an example, just one line listings of Model 10 specials and variations went on for two full pages. Model descriptions are very full, unique characteristics in product or packaging indicated, dates of production and production counts are present in each case. To some extend, branded general merchandise is also covered; knives, belt buckles, etc.

The book is an excellent value.

Amazon.com
Programming with the C++ Standard Library can certainly be difficult, but Nicolai Josuttis's The C++ Standard Library provides one of the best available guides to using the built-in features of C++ effectively.

The C++ Standard Library provides plenty of default functionality in the form of the Standard Template Library (STL) for containers (like vectors and linked lists), as well as generic algorithms (which allow you to sort, search, and manipulate elements inside containers). The best thing about The C++ Standard Library is that it gives the reader a concise guide to working with these basic containers (from lists to sets and maps, with everything in between). Each container type is explained along with short code excerpts. Moreover, in a reference section, the author explores the connections between each container type, showing how they share similar methods. (Learn just a few methods and you can pretty much work with them all.)

In addition to STL, this book excels at providing a readable introduction to the generic algorithms (which can be used to sort, search, and otherwise manipulate STL containers). Other books either fold this material in with the explanation of containers or make it seem like an esoteric topic. The fact is, generic algorithms work with all the STL types, and by separating these algorithms out like this the reader can learn the rich array of algorithms available in today's standard C++. While this book concentrates on STL and algorithms, readers will still find great coverage on Standard Library string classes and streams (including a fine section on internationalization and locales).

For the beginning or intermediate C++ programmer, The C++ Standard Library can be a real timesaver. It arranges and explains the complexities of the C++ Standard Library and STL in a manageable format that's great as a reference and as an approach to programming. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: history of C++ and the Standard Library, template basics, Big-O Notation, the std namespace, standard exceptions, allocators, standard library utilities, pairs and auto_ptr, numeric limits, the Standard Template Library (STL) basics, containers, iterators, algorithms, vectors, lists, deques, strings, sets, multisets, bitsets, maps, multimaps, stacks, queues, iterator adapters, function objects, element requirements, value and reference semantics, complex numbers, valarrays, stream classes, stream manipulators and formatting, file I/O, internationalization, and locales. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Prompt delivery and great price
This book was delivered to me before time and also paid a decent price for it.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a piece of crap
Tutorial? Hardly. Reference? I can find better, more complete, and more accessible reference material in 10 seconds with google. Whenever I open this book to find information about some aspect of the STL, I end up googling for the same information a few minutes later.

The examples are near useless. They are all minimal examples of basic functionality and offer no help in using the library for real-life tasks. They do show you which header files to include, which is a plus.

Hash maps are completely left out of the book. While not officially part of the stl, they are still a significant part of it, and one that requires more explaining than the rest.

I am to understand the +5 reviews were because there are no better books on this subject, similarily my +2 review is because there are not enough negative reviews of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars the book is really perfect... but the shipping was bad!!!
The book is really perfect and is exactly I hoped.
However, the main and only bad critic I want to highlight is the shipping.
The package was very light and the book cover arrived damaged: the corner were maltreated.
No really, only a box including 2 plastic bubbles is not serious and totally insufficient to correctly protect such kind of nice books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent book. The only comment that I have that has not been covered is that you should know c++ templates to use this book... theres a problem with that, most if not all template books require you to know STL.You will have to read both in conjunction if you do not all ready know templates.
Once you get past that little pit fall though, this book is invaluable to any c++ programmer.

5-0 out of 5 stars C++ Programmers: Don't try to live without this book
This is far and away one of the best written programming and reference books I have purchased in 20+ yrs of programming.

It gives a perspective on state-of-the-art C++ style, language constructs, and technique that only a choice few people in the industry can offer. The book has all of the meticulous attention to detail and design formalities that one could expect of the finest academic.

Bravo, Mr. Josuttis, and THANK YOU! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource tool
This book is a necessary staple for every Interior Designer's book collection

4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book for Design Students and Practicing Designers!
I recently purchased this book while taking a Commercial Interior Design course as part of my Interior Design degree.I found the book to be very helpful in many aspects of commercial design and specification. Also, my boss, who is a licensed Interior Designer and has been practicing for about 10 years has a copy of the book that she used while in college; she refers to it as her design reference Bible, haha.Although some of the material (such as codes) may be out of date due to the everchanging laws and standards, overall this book is filled with valuable information.A must-have for all interior designers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Designers
A great book for interior designers. Serves as a great refrence. A must add to any library collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best.
A very informative and usefull book for all designers.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY! it's hard to imagine a more worthless book
This book is a fiasco. As a professional in commercial space planning for many years, I picked it up based on a 'glowing review'. I find another few good ratings here on-line. The authors mother must be writing them, because no one who actually attempted to verify the faulty and incomplete information within, could ever see this tome as worth the paper upon which it is printed.

One reviewer was accurate though; it isn't a bad door stop. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
The second novel in the thrilling historical trilogy about the rise and fall of the powerful and mysterious Templars, from the author of the immensely popular Camulod Chronicles.

In 1187 one of the few survivors of the Battle of Hattin, young Scots Templar Alexander Sinclair, escapes into the desert despite his wounds. Sinclair has learned about the execution of the surviving Templars after the battle, so when he is rescued, he says nothing of his own standing among the Order of the Temple. Sinclair is one of the Inner Sanctum of the Order-a member of the ancient Brotherhood of Sion, a secret society within the secret society.

Two years after the battle, Sir Henry St. Clair is awakened after midnight by a visit from his liege lord, Richard the Lionheart. King Richard is assembling an army to free the Holy Land from the grip of Saladin and his Saracens, and he wants Sir Henry, his first and favorite teacher, to sail with him as his master-atarms. The old man is unwilling to go-he neither likes nor trusts Richard, having found him both a sadist and an egomaniac. But his future, and that of his young son AndrŽ, a rising knight in the order, depends on his allegiance to Richard. Sir Henry knows that AndrŽ worships his older cousin, Alexander Sinclair of the Scottish branch of their family, who has been in the Holy Land for years. Alexander will be an ally in an unfamiliar land. Sir Henry agrees to go despite serious misgivings about Richard, and his motives for war.

From the moment the first soldiers of the Third Crusade set foot in the Holy Land, the story of the three templars unfolds as the events of the campaign and the political and personal intrigues of the Crusade's leaders again bring the St. Clair family-and the Order-to the edge of disaster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous historical fiction
Led by Richard the Lionhearted, 50,000 soldiers are ready to do battle to regain the Holy Land from the Saracen chieftain Saladin and his forces.Amongst Richard's army is Knight of the Templar Alexander Sinclair, who is willing to die to see the Christians succeed in this Crusade against the unfaithful. He and the rest of the force believe victory is theirs because God is on their side.

However, to the shock and consternation of the Christian Crusaders, the battle by Galilee turns into a defeat.Richard refuses to quit on his dream of the Holy Land controlled by Christians; he plans to raise another but bigger army.To do so he sails home accompanied by his loyal master-at-arms Henry St. Clair and the armorer's son, Andre, a Templar belonging to the top secret Brotherhood of Sion, a group with their own agenda.

The second Templar tale (see KNIGHTS OF THE BLACK AND WHITE) is a fabulous historical fiction tale that brings alive the Lionhearted Crusade in the Holy Land and the king's efforts to raise money and men.The story line plays out on two levels.First there is throughout all sorts of political shenanigans occurring as everyone has a secret agenda; second there are the battles between the Christian Defenders of the Faith and the Saracens defending their Holy Land.Jack Whyte provides a strong vivid middle tale so picturesque readers will taste the desert dust.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all aspiring sopranos
You will find a healthy year's worth of instruction in this book.A great blend of styles and languages.

One of my favorite points is that this book comes with two CDs.The CDs include pronounciation aids for everything not in English, and piano accompaniament for all of the songs.I would, of course, have recommended that the money and effort be put out to hire a tallented soprano to demonstrate all of the pieces, but that's a minor gripe.

The selection of songs was artfully chosen, with a wide range of challenging and beautiful pieces included.Although not one of my favorites, "I Attempt From Love's Sickness" is a great repertoire song, and is a great tool to develop flexibility and fluidity of movement in the voice. In contrast, Love's Philosophy is a huge "little" song, barely a minute in duration depending on how it's performed, but climaxing to a huge, full-voiced peak at the end. It's a perfect encore piece, and a great addition to any recital.

In the French songs, the selection is limited to the typical French-style art songs.Since there is less variety in the really good French songs available, the editor has chosen some of the more beautiful and standard pieces.Si mes vers avaient des ailes is a beautiful, light love song, where Plaisir carries a bit heavier feel to the melody.

Both of the Schubert pieces are outstanding German repertoire pieces, and Du bist die Ruh is one of the more challenging pieces in the book if performed correctly.

In the theme of lyrical-type music, the editor includes Del cabello mas sutil as a Spanish piece, O mio babbino caro for Italian opera, and Pie Jesu for Latin oratorio. All three of these pieces showcase nearly any developing soprano voice, and provide a reasonable challenge to any young or begining singer.

As a fun change, The Sun, Whose Rays Are All Ablaze, provides a change to the rest of the pieces, boardering on an introduction to coloratura styling. It moves much more quickly and demands a lightness in the voice that is not required for "Babbino", "Cabello" or "Love's Philosophy".

I have selected a few of the most widely known and sung pieces to highlight, but the teacher and student alike would be encouraged to explore each of the pieces in this collection, as each provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard Vocal Lit
This book is a great resource for a student, singer or a voice teacher looking to start their students on some basic repertoire. One of my students has this book and I ordered it because I liked what song selections were inside.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
This overall is an excellent collection of arias for the aspiring Baritone. The range is good, the selection overall is excellent. The slightly disappointing sections are the Italian Art Songs/Arias as well as the Opera selection. Also, the tempi on the CD can be quite akward at times, but the pronunciations are overall, quite good.I highly recommend this collection because despite it's faults it contains some truly great literature such as "Widmung" by Schumann.

5-0 out of 5 stars Josh "A Baritone Vocalist"
This is a fantastic book for anyone who is a baritone. There is great variety with classical, baroque, languages, and folksongs.Any singer should buy this book because it is outstanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important and comprehensive reference book you'll refer to again and again
As an educator and former president of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Chief Landscape Architect and head of the New York City Housing Authority's Landscape Architecture division, Leonard J. Hopper, FASLA has made a significant contribution to the profession of Landscape Architecture by editing and compiling "Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards."

For over 70 years, architects have been using a valuable reference book, "Architectural Graphic Standards." Finally, landscape architects can have a similar reference book,"Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards."This book includes 4 parts.Part One is Practice of Landscape Architecture. It covers overview of the profession, construction documentation, project administration, and legal and environmental factors. Part Two is Standards and Guidelines. It covers human factors, environmental factors (including a lot of sustainable design discussions), cultural factors, security considerations, cite planning, circulation, and accessibility.Part Three is Process, Implementation and Application. It covers construction operations and earthwork, stormwater management, irrigation and water features, pavement and landscape structure, site amenities, planting, special construction, hazard control, restoration and remediation, and parks and recreation. Part Four is Materials. It covers soils, asphalt, concrete, masonry, metals, wood, recreation surfaces, nursery stock, other materials, and evaluating the environmental and human health impacts of materials.

"Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards" has 1088 pages (9.7 x 11.4 inches large format) and many line drawings. It is an important and comprehensive reference book you'll refer to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource
This book is essential for all Landscape Architects and designers and I highly recommend purchasing this latest printing. This book contains everything a designer needs for information and industry-wide standards that are used everyday as well as some that are not used everyday - this book puts it all together into one concise reference that should be kept within arms reach at all stages of the design process.I currently work with the author and he is extremely knowledgeable and experienced.Even if you have previous editions of this book, get this edition as it has been updated with current standards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for landscape architects (and students too)
Leonard Hopper has done a tremendous job of compiling an immense amount of information that covers a broad expanse of topics relevant to landscape architecture, from site analysis to the design of zoo exhibits and everything in between. One of the book's best and most useful features is the enormous compilation of detailed construction diagrams for all sorts of site elements. To top things off, the entire book is very well organized and easy to use.

For years the only book with similar information was Time Saver Standards, which I have always found to be difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in the kind of detail I really need. Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards is a FAR better book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic primer for any investor
I have been reading a bit about investing for a decade but still felt I lacked a clear and comprehensive understanding of the previously overwhelming world of money and investing. NO MORE! I have found nothing that compares to the clear, concise and highly readable format of this book. The color coded and cearly defined sections helped me digest the well-organized and very readable material. However, the author's far exceed the abilty of most to clearly and concisely explain the most difficult and complicated of topics. This little book is a gem.
I feel like I've had a brief course in economics and investing and am now able to knowledgably and confidently discuss investing with the most savvy of finanical experts, agents, and those know it alls one often encounters. I will most certainly be looking at other Lighbulb Press materials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good general intro to investing
This book describes the basic ways to invest your money. It covers markets and currency, stocks, bonds, indexes, mutual funds, ETFs, options, futures, and other alternative investments (briefly).

The format is very easy to read - there are lots of diagrams and pictures, which actually provides a good break from the large amount of dense information provided. One thing I liked (but that some may find annoying) is the frequency of repeating definitions. Between various sections, concepts are often defined multiple times. I found this useful, since it reminded me what a certain concept was without having to go back and find it earlier in the book.

In general, the information is pretty accurate and up-to-date. However, I noticed 1 error on the idea of fluctuation in currency value (International Investing in the Money & Markets section, p. 21), which gets the concept of a "strong dollar" during an international equity trade backwards, but then follows with an example diagram that gets it right. I was frankly surprised to see such a glaring mistake. I e-mailed the publishers, but received no response.

Another thing that I didn't like is the fact that, for some numbers in some of the diagrams, there is no mention at how the numbers were calculated/derived. I personally like to see/try all the formulas, so that was slightly annoying. But for the most part, I was able to figure out the formulas myself.

In conclusion, the book does an excellent job introducing various investment opportunities. It covers general information on each investment vehicle and describes the risks associated. It does not, however, teach you any special strategies (other than the obvious "diversify your portfolio" and "use strategies to minimize risk" ones) on investing - this is not the purpose of the book.

While I was initially put off by the brochure-like format and the clip-art-like pictures, I was pleasantly surprised by the content and the ease with which the information was presented. I certainly recommend this as an entry book for someone who does not understand the different ways to invest in various markets.

Pros:
+ nice introduction to markets and exchanges, and how they are regulated
+ covers all of the important investment vehicles used today
+ lots of useful information - good reference
+ lots of diagrams and pictures to break up the text

Cons:
- a few mistakes
- relatively dense - don't expect to blow through it if you want to retain the information ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nearly useless price guidance
The new edition of this catalogue is an extremely disappointing effort in terms of keeping up to date with price developments. A majority of the countries covered in this update have not been reviewed at all, resulting in a very misleading guide to collectors. If you have the previous edition, there is little incentive for you to buy this new edition. Editors should really put much much more effort in updating prices, or simply stop printing updates of the catalogue altogether. Changing the cover picture does not justify a new edition.
