5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible
I'm a working screenwriter with two produced films under my belt and several more in development, but I still refer to this book on a constant basis. No matter what kind of formatting question I have, this book has the answer. I don't think I've been stumped yet. Case in point: Today I was writing a scene where I wanted to smash cut to some footage from a character's amateur documentary with a minimal break in the pacing. I didn't know how to do it. So on a long shot, I scanned the index of this book and found "home video" addressed on p. 22. Sure enough, Christopher had the answer for me. (You just put "Home Video" in parentheses at the end of the slug line.) So thanks Chris for getting us all of us on the same page. Now if only you could do the same thing for comic book scripts!

5-0 out of 5 stars YES!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I have been searching for hours for a book on FORMAT. I don't want a book on how to write screenplays because I want to write my own screenplay my own way, not someone elses. I only wanted a book on the technicalities of the physical script and this is perfect!

4-0 out of 5 stars What every screenplay writer needs.
An excellent compilation of industry standards of formating. Altough I've been writing for many years, this book taught me things I plain didn't know. The only shortcoming - if it could be deemed that - is that writing styles seem to change with the wind and whim, and formatting sometimes is affected. But this book gives you the basics upon which to build. Definitely recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a keeper
I came upon this book in the library after my professor had told us to buy a hundred dollar book on scriptwriting format. I was utterly appalled because the book she gave us was far more complicated than it needed to be. This Hollywood format book clarified the essentials. If you are going cheap and reading on the internet about different scripts and try to emulate it in Movie Magic or Final Draft, first know the difference between the script formats. Get this book before you end up doing things the wrong way and have to start all over again.

Excellent. Comprehensive. Full of examples. Will it be the same standard fifteen years from now? Who knows. ... Read more

Book Description

Web Standards are the standard technology specifications enforced by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to make sure that web designers and browser manufacturers are using the same technology syntax. It is important that these implementations are the same throughout the Web, otherwise it becomes a messy proprietary place, and lacks consistency. These standards also allow content to be more compatible with multiple different viewing devices, such as screen readers for people with vision impairments, cell phones, PDFs, etc. HTML, XML, and CSS are all such technologies.

This book contains questions and answers on markup and style topics for Web Standards. It explores the multiple ways you can handle a situation when building with Web Standardsand the advantages and disadvantages of those methods. Additionally, each chapter goes a step further, with "extra credit" sections to give the reader extra tips and tricks based on the topic. The reader is empowered to make better decisions based on well-rounded information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This is an excellent book that all web designers should own. When I look at people's sites, I often validate them just out of curiosity, and it is so rare that I ever find a valid site.I always pay attention to validation, and this book just validates (for lack of a better term) my opinions on the importance of following web standards. This book is good for helping with workarounds for certain browsers (cough, IE) that don't support standards that most others do.

5-0 out of 5 stars XHTML & CSS - Start with this book!
With only a casual tinker in Dreamweaver split view under my belt starting out, I learned how to hand code XHTML and CSS with this book alone (well, and some web research here and there and CSS Mastery is an excellent follow up). It's written clearly and gives multiple solutions for each case, while explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each. I cannot recommend this book enough, as even after I finished it, it remains close by as an invaluable desk reference that I refer to here and there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple yet Thorough
Through simple illistrations and small code snippets this book covers pretty much what one would need to know in order to create great web 2.0 sites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is the 2nd one by Dan Cederholm that I bought and can be used as "Advanced Chapters" to his short but overall excellent "Bulletproof Web Design" (ISBN-10: 0321346939). These two combined will surely set your brains straight about standards-based HTML/CSS development.

It explains how to make your markup short. It shows why using purposeful HTML tags (such as "label") is preferred to using generic divs with classes. It destroys new and "hip" myth about tables being "taboo" for modern HTML.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction
I whish I'd read this one sooner. This book is a great introduction to the fabulous world of web standards. This is not, however the right book if you are already an experienced coder of standardized (X)HTML. Unlike books such as CSS Mastery (Budd, Moll, Collison), this book contains little of the "oh, right - I had completely forgot about that" tips, that experienced users could use.

If you have done little web standards (X)HTML and would like a good place to start, this is absolutely a book I would reccomend. If you know your web standards, and like them too, I would reccomend looking elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book for landscape design professionals
Landscape Architecture is a young and emerging profession. It is also a marginal discipline that borrows heavily from other disciplines like Horticulture, Architecture, Ecology and Civil Engineering, etc. The boundary and standards for Landscape Architecture has not been finalized yet. "Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Architecture" can help to set an industrial standard for Landscape Architecture.

"Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Architecture" is separated into 9 divisions (please note these are NOT CSI Masterformat divisions, just divisions used for this book only), including process (construction documents and specifications, site construction operation), standards and guidelines (spatial standards, energy and resource conservations, outdoor accessibilities, natural hazards: earthquake, landslides and snow avalanches, land subsidence, expansive soils), techniques (site grading, stormwater management, pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular circulation), structures (retaining walls, small dams, surfacing and paving, fences, screens and walls, wood deck and boardwalks, pedestrian bridge), improvements (site furniture and features, recreational and athletic facilities, pools and fountains, outdoor lighting, plants and planting), special condition (deck and roof landscapes, interior landscapes, disturbed landscapes, sound control), site utilities (water, sewer, irrigation, and recreational water bodies), materials (soils and aggregates, asphalt, concrete, masonry, wood, metals, plastic and glass, geotextiles), and details and devises. There is also a list of agencies and organizations and a list of reference after each section.

"Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Architecture" has 928 pages and many line drawings and interior black-and-white photos. It is a good reference book for landscape design professionals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Old and busted
I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.

2-0 out of 5 stars Usefulness
As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books.I get a similar result each time:They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life.I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.

1-0 out of 5 stars buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version
I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't.The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use.Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you're a mechanical engineer, save your money
I purchased this, along with Lineburg's Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam when I took my PE Exam.I cracked it open a few times while studying and once during the exam.I didn't find what I was looking for and I almost NEVER use it during my work.I am in the process field, pumps, pipe, etc.I use Lindeburg's manual at least twice a week.Skip this book and buy something more specific to your specialty. It's far to generic to be useful to me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hardcover-CD?
IT seems this book is a CD for use of a Wireless Area Network (WAN), so how can it possibly be hardcover? And why is is three times more expensive than the normal edition, but still looks like it is the same 10th edition material on CD ONLY?

2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated
"Mark's Handbook" is one of those books you hear other students in college talk about like it's a must have that you'll use for the rest of your life. But it's not. I bought this book, and six years out of college I barely ever crack it open. It's packed with information, but it's so general that you can't get any real-world specific information out of it. It's like a restaurant reviewer who can tell you that "New York has some great Italian restaurants" but doesn't give you the name of any of them. You're much better off skipping this book and buying one that's more specific to your particular field. As an example, the mechanical engineer is much better off with Shigley's "Mechanical Engineering Design". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bible
I really like the NASB translation. As for the bible itself, the letters are nice and big, and the hardcover is nice too. The only problems would be that the pages are a little on the thinner side and the words of Christ are not in red lettering. But despite this, I am very satisfied witht the product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I was looking for...
I had usd KJV all my life and when I joined a new SBC church I had found that they use NASB. When questioned. I was told to give it a try, So, not really knowing what I was going for I bought this version.

What I really wanted was a NASB "Study Version." I donated this one to my church when I found a study version locally.

A good read because of the larger print. So if you just want a NASB that won't cost you a fortune, get this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reminds me a lot of the New World Translation!
Since my last review of the NASB... I've had a change of heart on how I feel about this translation. I have read this online a lot and I like it a lot. I feel confident in what other reviews say about it, and I am very likely to get this translation.

For years I have read the New World Translation, and like it. But I have failed to find a translation I can read along side this great version. It's always good to get a great Bible like this along side a more mainstream one to compare verses, as sometimes the verses are translated better or more clearly or vice versa.

What I have found incredible is is that it's SO SIMILAR to the New World Translation! Some verses (are literally) exactly the same! So I wonder why people are so prejudice against the NWT! There is only 2 things -- John 1:1, and because it has been produced by Jehovah's Witnesses! Even though I myself don't discriminate reading translations as diverse as Evangelical, conservative, Catholic, and anything in between.

I checked the date -- the NWT was released in full (OT and NT) in 1961, the NASB was released in 1963. The reason I gave it 4 stars because although I consider it a great translation, no credibility is given to the NWT. The NWT is thrown off as bad due to semantics...

Here are some examples of some verses which are identical.

Genesis 1:6 -- Basic similarity

NASB -- Then God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."

NWT -- And God went on to say: "Let an expanse come to be in between the waters and let a dividing occur between the waters and the waters."

Matthew 5:31 - Semantic difference

NASB "It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE';

NWT "Moreover it was said, `Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'

Matthew 5:38 -- EXACTLY THE SAME!!!

NASB "You have heard that it was said, 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.'

NWT "YOU heard that it was said, `Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.'

1 John 5:21 -- EXACTLY THE SAME!

NASB Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

NWT Little children, guard yourselves from idols.

Ruth 2:19 -- semantic differences

NASB Her mother-in-law then said to her, "Where did you glean today and where did you work? May he who took notice of you be blessed." So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked and said, "The name of the man with whom I worked today is Boaz."

NWT Her mother-in-law now said to her: "Where did you glean today, and where did you work? May the one who took notice of you become blessed." So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked; and she went on to say: "The name of the man with whom I worked today is Bo'az."

1 Samuel 1:25 -- THIS VERSE IS EXACTLY THE SAME!

NASB Then they slaughtered the bull, and brought the boy to Eli.

NWT Then they slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to E'li.

Revelation 22:1 - semantic difference

NASB Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

NWT And he showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, flowing out from the throne of God and of the Lamb

It makes me feel comfortable reading the NWT, but I feel annoyed that there is no credit due even though the NWT was released first.

===Please note: The version of the NASB used was the 1995 update edition. The quotation of the NWT is the 1984 update edition.===

4-0 out of 5 stars If the price is right, it's perfect for students.
Through 3 years I had this book while in school, it was an invaluable resource. As many of you know, the work done in arch. school is very design/idea based, and not necessarily rooted in a feasible final product. However, I strived to include as many true-to-life elements in my design, and this book got it done for me. Many standards and sizes, etc. that had my classmates scrambling around on the internet or looking through dozens of books to find were easily found in the index of this book. It eventually became a class resource for a couple semesters until people bought their own.

As a professional, many people's firms have a specialty or three. For instance, I work for a healthcare firm at the moment. However, as a student, you can run the whole gamut of different building types. Despite how far-out some of my designs were, the fact that they were rooted in current, workable building methods and systems that were detailed out helped me immensely when applying for jobs. Knowing the details and showing them in your design is not only good for your reputation, but good for ability as an architect.

I'd recommend this to many arch students if the price is right for you. I happened upon it at a time with the book (no CD) was around $80 or $90. Of the dozens of textbooks I still have, this is one resource book I know I'll be consulting for a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for design professionals!
For over 70 years, architects have been using a valuable reference book, "Architectural Graphic Standards."

"Architectural Graphic Standards" is organized roughly per the CSI Masterformat divisions, including general planning and design data, sitework, concrete, masonry, metals, wood, thermal and moisture protection, doors and windows, finishes, specialties, equipment, furnishings, special construction, conveying systems, mechanical, electrical, sports, energy, history preservation, etc.

"Architectural Graphic Standards" has 1072pages (9.6 x 11.8 inches large format) and numerous line drawings. This new edition has expanded and new content covering contemporary issues. It is a must-have for architects, landscape architects and urban planners, interior designers, engineers or any other building-related design professionals.

The English Standard Version is a modern literal translation of the original texts that provides todays reader with the beauty and richness that the King James version brought to its readers. It strives to give us the precise wording, in English, that God inspired the original authors to use but it does so in a style that lets us hear God speak to us with accuracy and clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice translation
I like the ESV a little better than the NASB and a lot better than the NIV.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reduced liberal & anti-sacramental biases
The accuracy of this translation to fully modern English sets it apart from the NASB, which retains outdated language, and from the NIV, which at times sacrifices accuracy in an effort to make it more easily understood. Written at the tenth-grade reading level, the ESV is not for small children, who would benefit more from Luther's Small Catechism, with Explanation.

The ESV is revision of the RSV, but without some of its biases against supernatural Christianity. Likewise, confessional Lutheran scholars have noted that the ESV more literally translates some highly sacramental passages, including 1 Peter 3:21, than some other Protestant translations. However, like most other Protestant translations, the ESV includes the deuterocanonical books of the New Testament (the "antilegomena"), but not those of the Old Testament (the "Apocrypha").

By design, the ESV takes a less biased approach to sex neutrality than the TNIV.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very inexpensive way to read an excellent translation!
The ESV is easily among the best of the modern English Bible translations. (It compares favorably with the New International Version, the New King James Version, the New American Standard Bible, and the Holman Christian Standard Bible.)

It is definitely more of a word-for-word translation than most of its counterparts. However, it flows much easier than either the NKJV or the NASB.On the other hand, it avoids sounding too informal (like the HCSB).

Overall, it is a nice balance between the "formal" NASB and the "dynamic" NIV.It's just a shame that this translation is often overlooked due to a lack of agressive marketing on the part of the publisher.

Whether you are a member of a "conservative" Evangelical Christian denomination or a member of a "liberal" Mainline Protestant denomination, you will find much to appreciate about the English Standard Version of the Bible.

Don't be afraid to add one more translation to your personal library. The ESV is worth adding to your collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for model identification, not so much setting value
I am not an expert, but I do have a collection of: German, Russian, Swiss, Turkish and American military firearms and the popular dedicated reference books for each. What I see missing most from Standard Catalogue of Military Firearms is accuate market values. Prices listed for commodity Milsurp firearms are 2x - 3x market value, even if compared to the past two years. Missing also is the value by country of origin or arsenal and not much attention paid to the glut of inexpensive imports sold through various Milsurp outlets. As an example what is refered to generically as a 1903/38 Turkish Mauser, could actually be conversions made from 1890, 1893, 1903, 1905 carbine, G 98 and the Czech 98/22 Mausers in both small, large ring and hybrid action/barrel.

The Model 1895 Nagant revolver is, again, listed at twice to three times the accepted market value and without discerning the price difference amongst Milsurp models based upon production date, arsenal and configuration. These late production refurbished revolvers were not only made at the Soviet arsenal Tula, they were also made at Izhevsk and marked accordingly. The cartridge for the gun is listed as only the 7.62mm, a label that applies to several cartridges; it is the 7.62x38mmR.

The book is a good source for general identification, which is more than a small accomplishment, it just isn't a very good price guide for buying and selling firearms. It's easier to go to an auction site and spot check as an opportunity arises and reference books dedicated to a more narrow category of firearms will provide a lot more informatio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Military Firearms The Collector's Price and Reference Guide
This book is very interesting and helpful especially when buying old military rifles to collect.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to collecting Military style firearms
Krause Publications, along with Phillip Peterson have outdone themselves in preparing and publishing this 4th edition of what has quickly become a required book in the firearm collector community. As in the previous editions, there is ample discussion and numerous photographs of the listed firearms, and the variations of and much historical context on most of the major models covered. An added bonus in this new edition is the pictorial rich addition of a guide to military bayonets!

As with all collector guides, prices are really dependent on what someone is willing to pay for an item, and the over all economy at the time. The fall in property values and a general slowing of purchase power occurred during the production phase of the book and many models are a little over priced in the late 2007 market (especially the price of transferable machineguns). But this is rather refreshing as the prices are usually undervalued by the publication date of most collector guides.

For the firearm collector interested in military style weapons, this book is an enduring and valuable reference that should be on your bookshelf, or better yet, by your side at the next estate or firearm auction you attend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best poodle book I've purchased
Gorgeous book!Beautiful color pictures on almost every page. 20 pages dedicated to grooming including a variety of hair styles and all major topics are covered such as health and training.Of all the poodle books I've purchased this is by far my favorite.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book if you are in the UK
This book is full of wonderful pictures and a complete history of the standard poodle. However, the author is a former show judge in the UK and spends a considerable amount of the book discussing British standards for show. The recommended diet (raw human food) is contrary to what most American vets prescibe. The information on grooming the standard poodle is quite informative and includes pictures of finished cuts. However, it does not include enough information for a novice like me to attempt the trims.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and best poodle book you should read!
Eileen Geeson does a fabulous job of giving background information pertinent to standard poodle owners. She touches on a broad range of topics, from our emotional attachments to our furkids to puppy-raising information and everything in between. One of the most helpful sections gives warning signs of injuries and diseases prone to standard poodles. The pictures in the book are precious, and Geeson's book is a fluent read.

Editorial Review

Book Description
Consistent, high-quality coding standards improve software quality, reduce time-to-market, promote teamwork, eliminate time wasted on inconsequential matters, and simplify maintenance. Now, two of the world's most respected C++ experts distill the rich collective experience of the global C++ community into a set of coding standards that every developer and development team can understand and use as a basis for their own standards.

The authors cover virtually every facet of C++ programming: design and coding style, functions, operators, class design, inheritance, construction/destruction, copying, assignment, namespaces, modules, templates, genericity, exceptions, STL containers and algorithms, and more. Each standard is described concisely, with practical examples. From type definition to error handling, this book presents C++ best practices, including some that have only recently been identified and standardized--techniques you may not know even if you've used C++ for years. Along the way, you'll find answers to questions like

What's worth standardizing--and what isn't?What are the best ways to code for scalability? What are the elements of a rational error handling policy? How (and why) do you avoid unnecessary initialization, cyclic, and definitional dependencies? When (and how) should you use static and dynamic polymorphism together? How do you practice "safe" overriding? When should you provide a no-fail swap? Why and how should you prevent exceptions from propagating across module boundaries? Why shouldn't you write namespace declarations or directives in a header file? Why should you use STL vector and string instead of arrays? How do you choose the right STL search or sort algorithm? What rules should you follow to ensure type-safe code? Whether you're working alone or with others, C++ Coding Standards will help you write cleaner code--and write it faster, with fewer hassles and less frustration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent catalogue of best practices
I think this is one of the most useful C++ books one could have if working in a team. Most companies don't have a very large set of coding standards, and every now and then there will be a discussion about which is the best way to implement something. That is the time to when this book shines:

1) You can show your co-workers the page for the related item, and the explanation for the underlying rationale will be so concise, they can read it while standing.
2) Every item is backed with heavy references to standard works by the top names in C++.

Basically it is a tool for effectively ending discussions in the most constructive way possible.

It's the supreme index into the world of collected C++ knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I had high expectations about the fruit of the association of 2 authors that I appreciate but the result did not meet these expectations. Basically this book provides 101 rules or guidelines that you can get for free by looking at the table of content. Each of these rules is then followed by a very short explanation (1 or 2 pages usually). In my opinion, most of them are common wisdom that you can get from other sources. This is it. That is all you will get from this book. For that reason, I recommend to skip this one except if a convenient and compact collection of common knowledge is something that you are looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is just a brief repeating of other books from the same Author
If you own the 3 "Exception C++" books, do not buy this book. It is just a mirror copy of those. And the explanation in this book is brief. Typically, if you are familiar with the content of this book, it works as a quick reference manual or pocket book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Readable, pithy, sensible, 'greatest hits' round up of advice on C++
It's Sutter! It's Alexandrescu! It's both of them together! And the dark lords of C++ have combined forces to produce... er, some coding standards.

Yes, another book of best practices. Some readers may therefore be a tad disappointed that the combined fruits of the authors' labours will not be shattering their puny human minds with the sort of C++ that cause lesser compilers to accidentally create black holes that destroy the entire universe.

But let's evaluate the book on what it sets out to do, which is to give 100 bite-sized pieces of advice on C++ coding. And it's very good. You might prefer to see it as an annotated guide to the state of the art in intermediate C++ programming, in particular to Sutter's Exceptional C++ trilogy, which has become sufficiently sprawling that a reorganisation of the material, plus pointers to which book said what, has become quite welcome.

Yes, it's true that C++ is hardly short of books telling you when to pass by value. But take a look at the bibliography - it's a synthesis of all those other tomes (the Effective series, Sutter's own Exceptional series of course, and older books like C++ Strategy and Tactics) plus magazine articles, into a neat and compact whole.

Few of the items are longer than one or two pages. This is good because the advice stays simple, clear and direct. On the other hand, some of the items feel a bit squeezed into the available space, with discussion deferred to the books in the references, which is a little frustrating on occasion. After all, a lot of the best parts of the Exceptional C++ and Effective C++ series and their ilk is not so much what to do (or not to do), but the why behind it. There's plenty of the former, but not so much of the latter.

If you've read any other coding convention books (like those in Steve McConnell's Code Complete) then the first quarter of the book may feel like the same old same old. And of course with there being exactly 100 items, some are more heavyweight than others. But there's definite C++ meat here, in particular with the items on Exceptions and the STL.

C++ Coding Standards is as well-written as you'd expect from the authors - their friendly, slightly conversational writing styles mesh nicely and I couldn't tell who wrote which bits. And it's a great summary and unification of C++ best practices that someone just starting out could easily refer to in their initial forays. Perhaps even more experienced hands will discover a few tips, implications or issues that they hadn't considered before. It could also be a good way to ensure that a team are all up to date on best practices.

Essential for those with a large C++ library? Probably not, but it does the job it sets out to do very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coding rules explained
This book is a very readable reference book. The authors have read several books and condensed the best coding rules to prevent many errors. If you code in any language other than C++, read this book because many of the hints are useful. (If you code C++, then all of the hints apply.) And if you don't like rules and guidelines, then just read the "exception" section provided in each entry to be sure that your code meets the exception. ... Read more
