The book came in good time and had shipping tracking. It came with the CD as stated and it was just what I expected. No complaints, only compliments. Thank you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shipping and quality are good but the book's content sucks
I received my book in perfect condition and on time. In class, however, I found this book was difficult to use. some questions refer to examples 100 pages back an frequently have questions that you have to constantly flip back and fourth between pages. It is poorly laid out. They failed at designing this book. It barely has any examples for you to relate your question to, to have a better understanding. If your prof requests this book you should change classes immediately. The authors and publishers fail at designing this book. Other than that amazon does a great job processing your order and getting it to you on time.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Working
It's not that I wanted to buy this book, but the math class i'm in dictated that I must have it. I must admit the book is informative and well narrated. As it goes i'm pleased.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good text-book.
I am using this now for my college stat class and it is a good textbook. I can understand the material presented and am not afraid to refer to it when the professor gets too in-depth.I am glad it is so useful in a subject I have trouble following =)

The only downside is that my professor uses the formulas and definitions a little differently than the book. So when I use both sources I have to spend a little time to reconcile the two.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pick a different book for the sake of your students
This book was not very good for learning basic statisics. It needs more problems worked out and the steps involved. It also needs to show how to work out all the problems with a calculator or Excel. I don't think that type of information should have to be purchased separately.

5-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
The book came in reasonable time and I got exactly what i asked for.
Thank you

3-0 out of 5 stars can't say it's my favorite subject, but got me through the class
as a statistic student, I wish this book would have more samples of questions asked.
I had homework to be done, and some homework questions were very difficult, and the book did not have samples. Therefore, I had to have a tutor from [...] and they really helped me a lot figuring out the answers.
but I guess most math/statistics books are the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars complete and fundmental concept
Compare with FRM Handbook in the quantitative methods, this book has complete description in statistics. It has complete and
fundmental concepts. It is not so advanced in this field. but if you want a quick and fundmental understanding of statistics,
it would be a not bad choice. But If you are a person with thorough understanding of statistics, and you want a more advance
textbook, It might not be proper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stats book.
It's a good product. What you'd normally expect, a textbook. very informative. and its exactly what was asked for in class? I guess if you were thinking of buying this just to learn stats, its pretty good because there are answers int he book as well to teach you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Difficult and interesting
This is not an easy book, but it is worth reading if you want to get a particular perspective on "the foundations of statistics".

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Good
One of the earliest books/texts to present the Bayesian paradigm. You need at least three semesters of calculus to do the math - Savage was one of the statisticians who worked on the Manhattan Project and this text is very rigorous.

4-0 out of 5 stars L J Savage was never able to deal technically with ambiguity
John Maynard Keynes's A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP)was given a five star rating by this reviewer because he dealt clearly and succinctly with what Ellsberg later called "ambiguity".Keynes did not use the terminology of Ellsberg. In the TP Keynes analyzed the problem of ambiguity using the term "weight of the evidence".In the General Theory(GT)Keynes used the term"uncertainty".Keynes defined an index to measure the weight of the evidence, denoted by the variable w.By definition,0<=w<=1(See p.315,TP,chapter 26).Keynes then incorporated w into a decision rule which he called a conventional coefficient of weight and risk c.Given outcome A,the decisionmaker's goal is to maximize cA,as opposed to pA or pU(A),where p equals a probability(p+q=1)and U(A)is a utility function.c=p(1/(1+q)[2w/1+w].Savage did discuss the problem of ambiguity or uncertainty or lack of evidential weight using the term vagueness.Unfortunately, after discussing the problem of vagueness,Savage decided not to deal with this problem technically.Savage's technical analysis of decision making under risk is certainly very interesting. However, his failure to deal with the problem that Keynes had already solved in his TP means that I can only give Savage four stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant exposition of personalist (subjective) probabilty
Savage rigorously reworks the approach of Frank Plumpton Ramsey to give us a personalist (subjectivist) probability construct, and uses this to found a theory of statistics.Even many of us who disagree strongly with Savageare greatly impressed by this remarkable work. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A Primer of Ecological Statistics explains fundamental material in probability theory and experimental design for ecologists and environmental scientists. The book emphasizes a general introduction to probability theory and provides a detailed discussion of specific designs and analyses that are typically encountered in ecology and environmental science. Appropriate for use as either a stand-alone or supplementary text for upper-division undergraduate or graduate courses in ecological and environmental statistics, ecology, environmental science, environmental studies, or experimental design, the Primer also serves as a resource for environmental professionals who need to use and interpret statistics daily but have little or no formal training in the subject.

The book is divided into three parts. Part I discusses the fundamentals of probability and statistical thinking. It introduces the logic and language of probability (Chapter 1), explains common statistical distributions used in ecology (Chapter 2) and important measures of central tendency and spread (Chapter 3), explains P-values, hypothesis testing, and statistical errors (Chapter 4), and introduces frequentist, Bayesian, and Monte Carlo methods of analysis (Chapter 5).

Part II discusses how to successfully design and execute field experiments and sampling studies. Topics include design strategies (Chapter 6), a "bestiary" of experimental designs (Chapter 7), and transformations and data management (Chapter 8).

Part III discusses specific analyses, and covers the material that is the main core of most statistics texts. Topics include regression (Chapter 9), analysis of variance (Chapter 10), categorical data analysis (Chapter 11), and multivariate analysis (Chapter 12).

The book includes a comprehensive glossary, a mathematical appendix on matrix algebra, and extensively annotated tables and figures. Footnotes introduce advanced and ancillary material: some are purely historical, others cover mathematical/statistical proofs or details, and still others address current topics in the ecological literature. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Book in excellent condition. Amazon shipped one day after I placed my order, then I got the book in less than 6 days! Great Amazon, keep up the prices low and the good service!

5-0 out of 5 stars don't leave home without it!
this book saved me when i was struggling in a biostats course. it has great examples, you can get the data sets from the website and it really explains things clearly. i wish i had known about it sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unfortunate title for a fantastic book
I bought this book based on seeing a preview of its contents on Amazon. I am a biomedical research scientist (not exactly an ecologist!), and this book is one of the most well-written books on statistics I've come across yet. When I teach statistics, I will probably use this book, despite its obvious focus on ecology. If you need a great introduction to statistics and experimental design regardless of your discipline, this book is well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple and great book!
I took many statistic course, but not until I read this book, I didn't truly understand what is the basic concept of those common statistic measures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite for the beginner
While the preface and first chapter of this book do a good job of simply explaining the terms used in statistics, I find that the authors needed to spend more time fleshing out the concepts.I've been looking for a statistics book that focuses on ecology and the environment, and I believe this one can be it; I would like to have seen different scenarios used in the examples, rather than one scenario, then a rapid shuffle forward to the next example.A good one to add to a statistics course, or to discuss in a class setting...or even with someone who knows statistics inside-out. ... Product Description

WHAT ARE THE ODDS YOU'LL WIN THE LOTTERY?

How long will your kids wait in line at Disney World?

Who decides that “standardized tests” are fair?

Why do highway engineers build slow-moving ramps?

What does it mean, statistically, to be an “Average Joe”?

NUMBERS RULE YOUR WORLD
In the popular tradition of eye-opening bestsellers like Freakonomics, The Tipping Point, and Super Crunchers, this fascinating book from renowned statistician and blogger Kaiser Fung takes you inside the hidden world of facts and figures that affect you every day, in every way.

These are the statistics that rule your life, your job, your commute, your vacation, your food, your health, your money, and your success. This is how engineers calculate your quality of living, how corporations determine your needs, and how politicians estimate your opinions. These are the numbers you never think about-even though they play a crucial role in every single aspect of your life.

What you learn may surprise you, amuse you, or even enrage you. But there's one thing you won't be able to deny: Numbers Rule Your World…

"An easy read with a big benefit."
--Fareed Zakaria, CNN

"For those who have anxiety about how organization data-mining is impacting their world,Kaiser Fung pulls back the curtain to reveal the good and the bad of predictive analytics."
--Ian Ayres,Yale professor and author of Super Crunchers:Why Thinking By Numbers is the New Way to Be Smart

"A book that engages us with stories that a journalist would write, the compelling stories behind the stories as illuminated by the numbers, and the dynamics that the numbers reveal."
--John Sall, Executive Vice President, SAS Institute

"Little did I suspect, when I picked up Kaiser Fung's book, that I would become so entranced by it - an illuminating and accessible exploration of the power of statistical analysis for those of us who have no prior training in a field that he explores so ably."
--Peter Clarke, author of Keynes: The Rise, Fall, and Return of the 20th Century's Most Influential Economist

3-0 out of 5 stars More about contemporary events than statistics
This book is fairly well written and it presents stories about current events in which statistics play a major role. I purchased it, however, hoping to learn some statistics. I have read other math books about different concepts ranging from calculus to math history that were both entertaining and informative from a mathematical point of view (Derbyshire, Dunham, etc.). I have found this book to very lacking in this regard.

Statistics is my weakest area in math since I have never taken a course on the subject. What a student will learn in a first year statistics course, however, dwarfs what you will learn from this book. For instance, in the chapter regarding correlation versus causation, the author uses stories to highlight their differences, and explores how they are often mixed up. Having already known about this distinction, however, I picked up nothing mathematically from the chapter. There was no real insight into how these statistics are created.

If you know absolutely nothing about statistics, you can pick up a little from this book. For instance, in the same chapter mentioned above, the author examines how statisticians determined spinach to be the cause of the e coli outbreak from a couple of years back. It's very simple. 20% of people reported eating spinach on a regular basis, but 80% of people reported eating spinach who had been diagnosed with e coli. The chances of that happening are very slim, statistically speaking. The author does not present in any detail how this percentage is generated.

The book does shine in its reporting about current events, and that is its strongest point. It's also particularly striking how few numbers it actually uses. Apparently, this is a part of its success since so few people are actually numerate. If you are a little on the numerate side, and want to learn about how statistics are actually computed, look elsewhere. If you want to see how statistics relates to current events in general, consider this book.

(3.5 stars. Amazon really needs to update their star system, speaking of numeracy; it seems that we should be able to highlight how much of the final star that we choose.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistics, Explained for the Rest of Us
If you ever wondered how numbers can affect your everyday life then "Numbers Rule Your World" is a book not to be missed. A professional statistician, Kaiser Fung has managed to write a wonderfully readable account revealing how many aspects of our daily activities--whether going to Disneyland, flying on an airline, or applying for a bank loan--are influenced by statistics. A book you won't put down once you've started. Educational and thoroughly enjoyable!

4-0 out of 5 stars If numbers rule the world, this book helps you understand the weaknesses in those rules
I have always been frustrated by books on statistics that appear to be written for people who already know statistics. This is a book that breaks that mold.

Numbers rule your world is a solid book for non-statisticians to understand the principles and more importantly how statistics can bias what you read and how information is presented in making decisions. The author, Kaiser Fung, does a fine job creating a book that is accessible, interesting and far reaching. He does this by telling a series of stories that revolve around a contentious issue such as using stoplights on freeway on ramps, the efficacy of testing, etc. to illustrate key concepts in statistics.

The author talks about major challenges and the weakness in some statistical applications. This is not a boring book about standard deviation or sampling errors, rather Fung tells the story behind the numbers, discussion motivation, history, approach and how numbers play a role. The writing at times is a little dry, but the topics are interesting. One of the strengths of this book is the fact that many of the case examples are about things that have not been prevalent in the popular media, so you get important ideas illustrated by fresh stories.

There are many ways to talk about how people use and abuse numbers and statistics. Most concentrate on technical aspects and do not take the time to get behind the stories.Fung does and this makes for an enjoyable and interesting book, even for people who have forgotten everything about stats.

5-0 out of 5 stars With Depth, And Figures To Support
It is hard not to make the comparison between "Numbers Rule Your World" and "Freakonomics".Even the book has made a reference once.Ten real life case studies are used, paired up in five chapters, to illustrate how different aspects of statistics affect our lives.Blogger statistician Kaiser Fung has made the topic surprisingly accessible, narrated in an engaging manner. Each chapter, the author picks two contrasting statistically related topics, juxtaposes them by taking turn to have the story told, and arrives at a conclusion. The narration is honest, impartially inquired from different angles. One of the author's objectives - besides convincing us that like it or not, numbers play a major role in our world today - I believe, is to expand our mind and horizon when interpreting certain situations as numbers are presented. And to appreciate what goes on behind the scene in your everyday life.

To impart the various aspects of statistical thinking upon his readers, the author uses the case studies of highway engineers versus Disney `Imagineers', epidemiologists versus credit modelers, insurers versus test developer (education), anti-doping agencies (sport) versus polygraph (lie detector), and the chances of jet crashes versus jackpots. Each case study - unlike Freakonomics - is backed up sufficiently by figures and facts. At times, I have to slow down my reading and think through the numbers, which I do greatly appreciate.

In practical term, how would reading "Numbers Rule Your World" help your work and life? For one, when you take in the news around you, you may wish to see things in a different perspective.Should you take in the reported figures on the papers as they are?Why are things or processes made that way? Some see an imminent risk, others do not.Should you follow the crowd? At the end of the book, the author has made a bold statement that if you know how to use numbers in making everyday decisions, you rule the world. While I am unsure if most of us has the ability and even access to a reliable data-set in using numbers in making decisions, this book does change the way how I see this world operates when it comes down to numbers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book on how numbers and statistics affect our lives
Kaiser Fung has written a clear and insightful book to help us understand and make sense out of the perplexing world of numbers and statistics and the impact of their use or misuse on business, ethics, business, politics, education, safety, quality of life, organizations and society.

In a highly narrative style devoid of technical jargon, it presents clear examples how numbers; their understanding, use and interpretation play a major role in many aspects of our daily lives:

* SAT scores, validity, reliability, fairness and test bias concerns.
* Credit scores, what they measure, their role and impact in our access to credit.
* Enjoying the family vacation at Disneyland, reducing wait times at amusement park rides.
* Avoiding traffic congestion.
* Are our airlines indeed safer than those in third world countries?
* Improving our health and managing disease outbreaks
* Catching cheaters in business, professional sports and the lottery

The major contribution of this book is how well and clearly the author explains the benefits and trade-offs of the application of statistical techniques in solving problems, while helping the reader have an appreciation of the power and limitations of many of these methods.

After reading this book and its many real life stories, the reader is unlikely to look at numbers the same way. The observations and conclusions the author provides at the end of each story or example are lessons in reasoning and analysis that will last a life time. The book is indeed a joy to read and I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars very condensed
This book and the way it's advertised make it seem like an idiot's guide to Stats. However, it's not. It's actually pretty dense for that. It is a great supplement to a Stats class. It cuts through a lot of the nonsense and verbiage of many stats texts. I'd suggest using this to supplement the class (after lectures etc). It's also great to refresh yourself on basic stats and probability concepts once you've taken a course. I just wish it had more diagrams and pictures of the various distributions.

Simply the best subject outlines with the most worked out problems - and problems with answers!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comphrehensive book on Statistics
Whether you are in senior years of your undergrad or a initial years of your PhD, you would be wasting your time learning stats from any book otherthan this. Very to-the-point explanation of essential concepts, excellent worked out examples, and quick review of the theory of stats - all packed in one neat book for great price. I would not be able to do my PhD studies without Schaum.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to statistics
I salute, with great joy, the McGraw-Hill initiative for re-publishing this classic of Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems in Statistics in a new and revised edition. The late Professor Murray Spiegel -a scholar, who wrote 14 books (!!) on various topics in mathematics-, profoundly marked my college days. I perfectly recall his keen sense of practicality. Vector Analysis and Complex Variables, among Spiegel's most accomplished endeavours, were (and still are) my bedside books. His pedagogical skills are also present in his Statistics. Professor Larry Stephens (Spiegel's co-author), who cleverly preserved the backbones of the book, carefully updated the material to allow for the deep technological changes undergone by contemporary societies since the first edition appeared in 1961. With a profusion of problems solved, this fourth edition that includes "...130 new figures, output from five computer software packages representative of the hundreds or perhaps thousands of computer software packages that are in use in statistics..." and a new chapter (Statistical Process Control and Process Capability) is here to stay. I particularly appreciated the pedagogical thread in the presentation of the subject: the authors introduce the essential of statistics in an easy-to-follow, topic-by-topic format. By revising college algebra topics (chapter 1; Variables and Graphs, chapter 6 ; Elementary Probability Theory) students are invited to learn step by step statistical distributions, elementary sampling theory, analysis of variance and the like of a discipline whose fields of application are as vast as the human brain can reach. I liked the book very much indeed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Statistics for Nursing Research
This book is easy to read and understand especially for nurses. The example given and instruction on how to work around SPSS help a lot!! I really recommend this book for new researcher who is interested to take up research module in university.

1-0 out of 5 stars Took way too long!!
Thought this book is at a great price... it is not worth waiting for 2.5 weeks for. My class was a 4 week statistics class and I received the book 2 weeks into the class, not to mention this book was ordered a week prior to the class. I also had to orderd the book from the school and expedite the shipping because I was behind in my reading, which cost me almost $100
It should be explained in detail how the shipping works and that it may take about 3 weeks to receive. This may be good for some people, however i don't know until like the week before class what book I will need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prompt, excellent service as usual.
Amazon is my first stop shopping for all my textbooks and other merchandise as well.I used to shop ebay but the auction period and price changes are not conducive to a quick, efficient sale.I like to know the price and to receive the free shipping with $25.00 purchase.I find that the price on amazon is often less expensive than the other sellers on amazon after the shipping rates are factored in, and I already know the quality and service are excellent. ... Manual required for college course, book in condition stated by seller, very pleased with price, condition and speed of delivery. Cheaper than college bookstore, saved alot of time ordering with Amazon

1-0 out of 5 stars 3rd edition, not 4th
If you are going to sell something, and the picture is of the 4th edition and no where does it say 3rd edition and then you send me the 3rd edition, which looks nothing like the 4th edition, you can just call yourself a horrible seller.Waste of time and money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad shopping experience!
I've used Amazon to shop for years, but it was my first bad experience ever. I ordered three textbooks with 2 days shipment. However, I only got one after a week, and that one was folden in a bag, which was in a terrible condition so that I had to return it. The other two books never attend to my hands because the carrier, Fedex "insisted" to send the books to me personally only, but I have to work and go to school, there's no way I can stay home at the daytime! The only thing I can do was to sign the notes posted on my door. But they still ignored them and sent the packages back to Amazon. After contacting with Amazon and Fedex for many times, they sent the package again. But THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN!! I contacted Fedex and Amazon and ask them to leave the package out of my door, and I left the signed notes there, but they still ignored it! I spent so much time to wait and contacting, but got nothing after a month. Unbelievable. And the school began already so I went to the bookstore and got used books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use this text to learn SAS for Statistical Analysis
Anyone who must use SAS for statistical analysis should use this book in their learning process.Yes, there is "The Little SAS Book" and its variatons, but Cody and Smith have written the best text for quickly learning how to use SAS for statistical analysis.Sometimes, academic authors write for their associates rather than students. These authors have one goal: to help anyone, at any level, learn how to apply SAS for their statistical analyses.Their writing is clear, and anyone with an 8th grade education can use their text.I've used R, Stata, SPSS, and Matlab for statistical analysis. This text is among the best statistical references and learning tools for anyone who must quickly learn SAS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but...
I used this book as a supplement to a crash course in Statistics for Graduate School. It is very good, but it can be a little skimpy on complete explaination of all the variables in an equation.

One good feature of the text is that the next chapter builds on the previous. The complexity of the various statistical equations grows gradually. This is helpful in may respects, but the writer(s) assume that the reader has an EXCEPTIONAL memory and can readily recall details from 1, 2, or 3 chapters back which apply to the current text. I found myself going back and re-reading previous chapters to get a handle on the chapter I was actualy reading.

Overall, the book is good but on one should try to use it as their sole book on business statistics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best stats book for a non-stats person
I manage a group of people who are incredibly skilled in data modeling and business statistics.I purchased this book as a refresher and reference - and was very happy with it.It discusses key statistical issues in simple terms - giving you the tools to handle yourself in any discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Statistics for MBA's

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE TEXTBOOK!!!
For many college students, statistical collection, analysis, and writing a data-driven report can seem to be an overwhelming task.Professors often gloss over critical points and dance through a statistics curriculum as if students actually understand or follow what is being said. Statistics can be one of the hardest courses in the curriculum if you aren't armed with the right textbook. This book was written primarily for the research methods course psychology majors must complete. When I was in Elementary Statistics I turned to this book again and again for the guidance and help I desperately needed.

Dr. Sherri L. Jackson's "Research Methods: A Critical Thinking Approach" is a phenomenal textbook! I wouldn't have passed Statistics or Research Methods without it.

I enjoyed reading this textbook and working through the many exercises, self-tests, and critical thinking reviews. The book gives meanings to unfamiliar terms and breaks down complicated formulas into simple ideas. The book is designed for students to succeed! Dr. Jackson takes a magnanimous and intimidating subject and makes enjoyable to read and work through. If planning to take a research methods course or to go to grad school this is an ultimate resource book to add to your library.I find myself turning to it any time I pursue a research project.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for review!
Although I have yet to take the AP Statistics exam, this book has certainly helped me in class. Our textbook (and our teacher) don't really do a thorough job in explaining the concepts. Often, before tests, I will look up a section in this book and learn how to do it from Cliffs!

There are a lot of AP Stat books out there, but they all cover a different assortment of material. Although I cannot guarentee that this is the material one needs for the exam, I know that it explains it THOROUGHLY. They have plenty of example problems that are worked out in ways so that you can follow along each step. I find the example problems and questions the most helpful part of the book. They also give very detailed free response, which is great for practice. ... Read more

Hi All:

I just brought the 3rd edition of this book and it is 940 pages.

Why is the latest edition much smaller than older edition.

1-0 out of 5 stars never again
I ordered this product for my son's college course. It was ordered Aug 23 & supposedly shipped on Aug 25.There was a tracking # I could use to check up on it.When I noticed it wasn't moving - I called USPS w/the tracking number & they had no record of the book ever being in their possession.I contacted the seller - they gave me a different tracking number which lead me to believe it was never mailed on Aug 25 as initially stated. The book was not received until Sept 21 - days past their estimated shipping time. The lack in shipping details/incorrect shipping details, the fact that it took a month for us to receive the book and that I have yet to hear back from Edubooks brings me to the conclusion that I will never trust this company when ordering my children's college textbooks again.Ordering textbooks should, and has always been, a very easy, painless task - until this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a stats guru? This book will help
As a doctoral student who is trying to get a handle on statistics, I found this book very helpful. Huck does a nice job of supporting what you learn in statistic classes (all the formula and theory `stuff')with real world interpretations and examples. I find his book to be a good resource when I am reading and critiquing journal articles, and when I am trying to word my statistical results in appropriate research vernacular.
