5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Punch per Pound!
This handy little reference is equation and information dense. Basic and oft used engineering equations are organized in a simple way.

I bought this for the PE in April, 2010. I used it to answer one question... which makes it worth the price right there.

In my day to day practice, I use it for frame engineering. This one is a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars big help for understandingThis book provides a wide
This book provides a wide variety of structural formula, both the basic and the more involved. It provides basic guidance on how to approach solving structural problems. I did notice that the preference in units is metric, but the book provides straight forward conversion from american units.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Summary of Basic Engineering Information
This work provides information on such things as geometric sections, beams, trusses, arches, plates, etc., often under various loading conditions. Its chapter on frame analysis is notable. Also featured are such things as building foundations, pipes and tunnels, soils, retaining structures, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Condensed convenience
This is a very handy little book.Properties of plane areas, basic vibration, beam formulas, plates w/ various b.c.'s, foundations, frames, arches, earth retaining, pipes & tunnels.Think of it as a specialized, watered down Roark's with more than a few hidden gems.It was extremely useful in my exam and is still very used as a quick reference or for basic first passes and superpositions for more complicated problems.

I humbly suggest that the review mentioning units is unfounded. The book is unitless as far as I've seen, aside from the examples. The examples use metric units.

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of date; questions are in-depth
Each subject goes more into depth as the chapter progresses, so that you can solve in-depth problems for the SE II exam.I haven't finished the problems in this book, but in going through it I'm under the impression that even the "easy" questions are much too in-depth for the SE I exam.I've already taken passed the SE II and was hoping for some representative SE I questions, but I can't take these problems seriously. However, I would add that solving the first problems in each chapter would be a great way to refamiliarize yourself with the concepts.

As someone else stated, every reference in here is out of date, this this book was published in 2003.Reference materials listed in the front include the 1997 UBC, the old ACI, and some books from the late 80's that I've never heard of.And I'm surprised Roark's book would be referenced in the exam.

And finally, it's not a good sign that problem 5 of Chapter 1 is missing the actual question. It only sets up the problem. From the solution in the back, I still can't tell what the question was supposed to be.PPI allows you to search for errata and report issues on their website, but they should really be sending out errata with the book. After all, it's $90 and from 2003.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is out of date.
This book is out of date.NCEES updated its structural design standards November 1, 2007, effective with the April 2008 examinations. The updates include IBC 2006, ASCE 7-05, ACI 318 2005, AISC 13th edition, PCI 2004, and NDS 2005 codes.Any questions referencing the out of date codes may be incorrect. The AASHTO code which NCEES now uses (3rd ed. 2004 w/2005 and 2006 revisions) is already out of date but is what the exam references.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not representative of the exam
I barely used this book in studying for the NY P/E exam. The problems are much too in depth as compared to the exam. It could be useful as a reference guide or general study but don't use it thinking that this is what exam questions will be like. For the exam I would recommend getting the sample exam book straight from NCEES and also the 60 second solutions book, those are much more helpful. If you're looking for a just a general reference book this might be helpful but I think there are better ones out there for that purpose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Developing Engineering Strategies--Not Just Solving Engineering Problems
This work presents solved problems not only as ends in themselves, but also as part of thinking up engineering strategies. For example, in the section on timber engineering, there is a truss whose chord has been split along a row of bolts, but not from an overload. The engineer is asked to design a repair for the truss.

The main emphasis throughout this book is on building construction. There is a section on the seismic response of structures, as well as a section on foundations in soil. The section on steel construction includes some problems where frame towers are made of light steel tubing. There are also a couple of Vierendeel frame problems, one of which requires a virtual work solution and the other which requires use of the slope-deflection method to solve.

The solutions are all given in the back. They are well-described with calculations, free-body diagrams, and comments as to how the solution is being arrived at.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just look at the errata on ppi2pass
Be careful of which "printing" you buy.Apparently the latest edition is the 4th but there are 4 "printings" of this edition.I simply purchased the "4th" edition from Amazon, but ended up with a second printing.Needless to say there are numerous errors in this printing which really slows down the studying.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stuctural Engineering Reference Manual
For the most part it is a well written book, but there are many errors. You should beware of Chapter 8, Bridges, as it is not a trustworthy study guide and definitely not good for using in the exam.It is full of errors, many of which are not posted on the PPI website.Illustrations for problems are wrong and unavailable from PPI.I have tried to contact them numerous times regarding the errors and to request the correct illustrations to no avail.

3-0 out of 5 stars Attention Illinois Examinees
Illinois candidates sitting for the Structural Engineering Exam should be aware that this book is not allowed to be used during the exam.On the IDFPR website, they specifically prohibit "Reference Manuals" with example problems. For the most part, this is a good book with many equations all in one place. But, you can't use it during the exam. Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a complete package, and has lots of errors.
If you're looking to take the SE II exam, this book shouldn't be your only source. It covers a few unique situations for concrete beam design and foundation design that are good references, but overall it's a light reader on general capacity calculation concepts for various materials.I used this to recap wood design, as well as to learn masonry design. There are no useful examples of masonry or shear wall design, however... so look elsewhere for anything but concepts.

Also, the steel examples are riddled with mistakes. This item cost a lot for its actual worth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for P/E prep and general reference
This book is pretty useful for p/e prep and as a general reference manual. I think it's very difficult to cover everything that could appear on the p/e exam and thus there are lots of things that do appear on the exam that are omitted here but it's still very useful. Don't assume that if you got through this book you've covered everything on the exam, there are things that are missing. For general reference you're probably better off with a specific book on each subject - i.e. a concrete, steel and timber book. Overall though I found that using this book as an overall guide for p/e prep was very helpful. ... Read more

Product Description
Continuing the tradition of the best-selling Handbook of Structural Engineering, this second edition is a comprehensive reference to the broad spectrum of structural engineering, encapsulating the theoretical, practical, and computational aspects of the field. The authors address a myriad of topics, covering both traditional and innovative approaches to analysis, design, and rehabilitation.

The second edition has been expanded and reorganized to be more informative and cohesive. It also follows the developments that have emerged in the field since the previous edition, such as advanced analysis for structural design, performance-based design of earthquake-resistant structures, lifecycle evaluation and condition assessment of existing structures, the use of high-performance materials for construction, and design for safety.

Additionally, the book includes numerous tables, charts, and equations, as well as extensive references, reading lists, and websites for further study or more in-depth information. Emphasizing practical applications and easy implementation, this text reflects the increasingly global nature of engineering, compiling the efforts of an international panel of experts from industry and academia. This is a necessity for anyone studying or practicing in the field of structural engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive, and Especially Valuable for Semi-Rigid Jointed Structures
This single volume includes chapters on topics as diverse as timber engineering, tunnel construction, fire engineering, bridges of all types, glass structures, fiber-reinforced polymer composites, and much more.

One exceptionally-helpful chapter in this book, in my opinion, is Chapter 23, on semirigid frame structures. Author Xu explains the concept of semirigid joints, summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge in the field, and provides worked examples of problems involving semirigid-fixed beams and braced frames. The worked examples are especially helpful in that they each show the solution in a very step-by-step manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive structural engineering book on the market
The Handbook of Structural Engineering is a comprehensive reference source on the fundamentals of, and special topics in, structural engineering. The book is intended for practicing engineers, and the introduction notes that the ideal reader will be an "M.S.-level engineer." Consequently, treatment of subjects is highly technical and emphasizes mathematical explanations to an extent that it might be of limited use to novices.

The first section provides a detailed overview of the fundamentals of structural engineering. Following this introductory section are eight chapters covering special types of structures, and thirteen chapters on special topics in structural engineering. All chapters contain a brief glossary of key concepts discussed within the chapter, an extensive bibliography, suggested readings, and a list of relevant codes and standards where applicable. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!!!!
I was expecting more from this book, the spreadsheet are not spectacular.....I have produced better ones!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars did not work for me
I purchased this in order to obtain useful spreadsheets to do design and analysis work, as I don't have the time or the access to office resources for creating and checking my own spreadsheets.I know that the editorial review mentions, and you also see after looking through the table of contents, that the author uses a couple prior projects as a backdrop for the spreadsheet calculations, but I thought that I would still be able to cherry-pick through the text and spreadsheets and get useful spreadsheet applications for my own work.

Didn't work for me.I feel that the author tried to do way too much.Half the book is on Excel, and all engineers who went to college know Excel enough to use it.Also the book discusses throughout engineering theory and practice, which overloads the material.I already know the theory; I needed spreadsheets to quicken my work.I simply wanted "Structural Engineering Templates Using Excel", but instead got a bunch of stuff that I didn't want or need.

    Would not recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gloriously and utterly useless...
I was heartbroken when I saw this book for sale. Why?Because I wanted to write this book.Twenty minutes after I received and opened the book I realized that the opportunity is still out there. If an LED flashlight is considered an advanced and high-tech tool for light, think of this book as a flaming, wooden torch. In fact, the book itself would be most useful in starting a fire.

Seriously, this book would only be useful for engineers over the age of ~40.If you're still new to spreadsheets it may be helpful. If you've been in college in the last ten years this book is a worthless waste of paper and ink.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ok for beginners
This book is ok for engineers who are not yet familiar with excel, but one would be better of with a excel manual and a structures text book. This book pretty much gives you the basics of how to set up a spreadsheet but, with a little time spent playing around with excel someone could figure them out on there own. The provided spreadsheet, although well thought out and planed, are nothing special and don't provide the proper detail to be used in a design office. The author does not go into any of the uses or advantages of macros and other automated features of excel which allow for greater variability in the use of spread sheets. I would recommend this book for engineers have no experience with excel and want a quick crash course in the basic features of the program, reminding them not to expect too much from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excel really works
The book (the spreadsheets) illustrates nicely that Excel works for a structural engineer, but thats about it.
It starts explaining Excel from scratch focusing on features that might be important for the engineer and applying examples common to an engineer, which makes it a good reference book for beginners. Afterwards, most of the book presents examples of calculations applying the functions learned in the earlier chapters of the book. There are examples from biaxial concrete column design to storage tank design.
The entire book was written using Excel and the accompanying CD includes all spreadsheets, giving the user the opportunity to revise formulas and offering a couple of handy spreadsheets.
However, the emphasis of the book lies on presenting a lot of examples elaborated by the author for some projects (mainly storage tanks). It leaves the impression that the book serves mostly to present those specific sheets and the authors work.
The layout of the sheets is awkward and the book itself proves that creating a book in Excel itself is not the best idea since the formatting of pages is a little bit difficult.
The examples are elaborated based on various codes, where the author expresses repetitively his nonconformism with LRFD. This aversion to LRFD leads to my personal favorite statement, which seems to be a little bit misplaced in a book about spreadsheets for civil engineers:
"And is Europe laughing at us because we still use old fashioned methods? Let them laugh. The way we do things has created a nation powerful enough to provide a defense umbrella and relative stability to Europe that has lasted 60+ years. Many Europeans can take a five week vacation because of our resourcefulness."
Personally, I would prefer to use an Excel manual and a good book on structural engineering.

    Product Description

Engineering Damage Mechanics is deliberately oriented toward applications of continuous damage mechanics to failures of mechanical and civil engineering components in ductile, creep, fatigue and brittle conditions depending upon the thermomechanical loading and the materials: metals and alloys, polymers, elastomers, composites concretes. Nevertheless, to help engineers, researchers, beginners or not, the first two chapters are devoted to the main concepts of damage mechanics and to the associated computational tools.

3-0 out of 5 stars survey on damage mechanics by Lemaitre
This book is definitivly too coincise for my taste. Dont't try to use it for self-study, It's a waste of time. I suppose that the previous book by the same author is better suited for a plain reading.Anyway, you can find (spread out the book) many clever triks and suggestions hardly written elsewere.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
simply the best book out there.
recommend starting with "a course on damage mechanics" for a better introduction. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Structural Analysis
This book was suppose to be new !!

Parts of the inside cover are bubbling and delaminating.

It also took a long time to receive my book.

Something weird cause the seller was Amazon....

3-0 out of 5 stars Could use more explanations
Overall, it appears to be a useful book. However, it frequently skips steps in examples and assumes that the reader understands what is going on.It could use better explanations and having less "fluff" in the text.More example problems needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This book is in very good shape and is exactly what I needed for my class at a good price.
