3-0 out of 5 stars SE Exam Review Book
Note that this book cannot be used when taking the Structural Engineering exam in Illinois.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Review Resource
I purchased this product to review for the P.E. exam.I am very satisfied witht he layout and choice of problems. It can be easily referenced. Also, the problems are easy to follow. There aren't huge leaps in the analysis that usually tend to slow you down.Additionally it will make for a good reference in my personal library during my career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for the SE 1 Exam
Having just taken the SE 1 exam, I found this book to be helpful in both the preparation time before the exam and also during the exam. I especially liked how the variables were printed in each corresponding section (Wood, Steel, Masonry, etc.) versus having one large master variable list. The Index is amazingly throughouh. Also, most minor mistakes were posted on PPI's errata webpage. I would reccomend this book to any person preparing for the SE 1 exam and suggest they give themselves ample time to go through each of the problems in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference and Good Problems
I thought that this was a good up to date reference with good problems added in the text to help with review. I would definitely get this book if you are studying for the SE I. You will of course still need all of your code books and other books. Also be sure to get the NCEES sample test so you can really see what style the problems will be. It is a good review of most of the information that will be on the test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive structural engineering book on the market
The Handbook of Structural Engineering is a comprehensive reference source on the fundamentals of, and special topics in, structural engineering. The book is intended for practicing engineers, and the introduction notes that the ideal reader will be an "M.S.-level engineer." Consequently, treatment of subjects is highly technical and emphasizes mathematical explanations to an extent that it might be of limited use to novices.

The first section provides a detailed overview of the fundamentals of structural engineering. Following this introductory section are eight chapters covering special types of structures, and thirteen chapters on special topics in structural engineering. All chapters contain a brief glossary of key concepts discussed within the chapter, an extensive bibliography, suggested readings, and a list of relevant codes and standards where applicable. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Wrong presentation for the target audience
The book's title claims to be simplified engineering for architects and builders, members of the latter group often having no engineering training. As such, I expected the book to cover key structural and other building engineering issues in engineering terms in an appropriate tutorial format.Instead, the book is a collection of reference materials, distilled down.I majored in EE in college and took several semesters of static and dynamic engineering courses, and still had problems with this book because of the lack of contextual information to the presentation. This book does not at all deliver on the goal defined by its title.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overrated - This book is "broken"
GOOD:The book does an excellent job presenting steel concepts and is adequate in concrete.

POOR:As an instructor for structures courses for architects, this book is simply disastrous. The wood section, also, is incomplete.Errors run rampant through the book's text, examples, and problem solutions through the book.Even within the same edition, book answers can vary book to book.Furthermore, current methods are mixed with the old leading to an incorrect presentation of the subject matter. In short, this book falls far short of the reputation which preceded it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for the beginner
The book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis well, mainly statically determinate structures. The book also covers design fundamentals for various materials, mainly: wood, steel, concrete and masonry.

I used an earlier version of this book many years ago, as an introductory book. The book is good for the beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplified for better understanding
This Book is excellent. easy to read and understand. this book has given me all the info i needed and then some. i highly reccommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book
This book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis (mainly statically determinate structures) and then goes on to the design fundamentals for different materials (wood, steel, concrete and masonry)followed by the design of the structural system for a building.I firstused an earlier edition of this book when studying for my undergraduatedegree as an introductory book before reading the course texts. The presentedition maintains the "easy to understand" explanations of theearlier edition while adding new materials, expanding other sections andupdating the design methods in line with the building codes. Emphasis isplaced on understanding, the explanations given are very clear and thereare numerous worked examples to illustrate the principles. The book isexcellent for the beginner first getting used to structural analysis anddesign or for the practising engineer who has not touched structures for awhile and wants to refresh his memory. However this book is only the firststep and the undergraduate or practising engineer would do well to followup on thiswith other more specialised books like Wang and Salmon's"Reinforced Concrete Design", Salmon and Johnson's "Steelstructures: Design and behaviour", or Halperin and Bible's"Principles of Timber Design for Architects and Builders". ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Gloriously and utterly useless...
I was heartbroken when I saw this book for sale. Why?Because I wanted to write this book.Twenty minutes after I received and opened the book I realized that the opportunity is still out there. If an LED flashlight is considered an advanced and high-tech tool for light, think of this book as a flaming, wooden torch. In fact, the book itself would be most useful in starting a fire.

Seriously, this book would only be useful for engineers over the age of ~40.If you're still new to spreadsheets it may be helpful. If you've been in college in the last ten years this book is a worthless waste of paper and ink.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ok for beginners
This book is ok for engineers who are not yet familiar with excel, but one would be better of with a excel manual and a structures text book. This book pretty much gives you the basics of how to set up a spreadsheet but, with a little time spent playing around with excel someone could figure them out on there own. The provided spreadsheet, although well thought out and planed, are nothing special and don't provide the proper detail to be used in a design office. The author does not go into any of the uses or advantages of macros and other automated features of excel which allow for greater variability in the use of spread sheets. I would recommend this book for engineers have no experience with excel and want a quick crash course in the basic features of the program, reminding them not to expect too much from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Excel really works
The book (the spreadsheets) illustrates nicely that Excel works for a structural engineer, but thats about it.
It starts explaining Excel from scratch focusing on features that might be important for the engineer and applying examples common to an engineer, which makes it a good reference book for beginners. Afterwards, most of the book presents examples of calculations applying the functions learned in the earlier chapters of the book. There are examples from biaxial concrete column design to storage tank design.
The entire book was written using Excel and the accompanying CD includes all spreadsheets, giving the user the opportunity to revise formulas and offering a couple of handy spreadsheets.
However, the emphasis of the book lies on presenting a lot of examples elaborated by the author for some projects (mainly storage tanks). It leaves the impression that the book serves mostly to present those specific sheets and the authors work.
The layout of the sheets is awkward and the book itself proves that creating a book in Excel itself is not the best idea since the formatting of pages is a little bit difficult.
The examples are elaborated based on various codes, where the author expresses repetitively his nonconformism with LRFD. This aversion to LRFD leads to my personal favorite statement, which seems to be a little bit misplaced in a book about spreadsheets for civil engineers:
"And is Europe laughing at us because we still use old fashioned methods? Let them laugh. The way we do things has created a nation powerful enough to provide a defense umbrella and relative stability to Europe that has lasted 60+ years. Many Europeans can take a five week vacation because of our resourcefulness."
Personally, I would prefer to use an Excel manual and a good book on structural engineering.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book needs a proofreader!
Do not use this book without an Engineering or Architecture professor to help you through the errors within. The book is full of errors of continuity, strange/bad math, and inconsistency. The errors are so numerous, that it makes you wonder if you can trust any of the formulas to be accurate. For example: a sample problem in beam design gives the formula to use (from a table), defines the variables, gives the values for the known variables; and then in the problem-solving steps, uses different values for the known variables than what was listed in the preceding "Given" section!Furthermore, the answer arrived at cannot be made by the equation provided! There are also errors where a formula is listed in tables and that formula is referred to later and used for a problem, but the formula is not exactly the same as the table; there is no explanation for the difference.

Editorial Review

Book Description
Structural reliability has become a discipline of international interest, addressing issues such as the safety of buildings, bridges, towers and other structures. This book addresses the important issue of predicting the safety of structures at the design stage and also the safety of existing, perhaps deteriorating structures. Attention is focused on the development and definition of limit states such as serviceability and ultimate strength, the definition of failure and the various models which might be used to describe strength and loading.

Much consideration is given to problem formulation and to the various techniques which can be applied to problem solution. These include the First Order Second Moment method and their derivatives, as well as various Monte Carlo tchniques. Each of these are described in considerable detail and example applications are given. Structural systems are also described, as is the effect of time on reliability estimation, and on the development of design code rules on the basis of limit state principles as under-pinned by probability theory. Furthermore, procedures for the reliability estimation of existing structures are also included.

The book emphasises concepts and applications, built up from basic principles and avoids undue mathematical rigour. It presents an accesible and unified account of the theory and techniques for the analysis of the reliability of engineering structures using probability theory. A balanced view of the subject is offered here not only for newcomers, but also for the more specialist reader, such as senior undergraduate and post-graduate students and practising engineers in civil, structural, geotechnical and mechanical engineering. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook!
I bought this book (at Amazon.com) to get a better understanding on the basic principles of structural reliability assessment (I 'm concerned with the probabilistic estimation of the remaining life of pressurized pipelines containing active corrosion defects in oil and gas distribution pipeline networks in Mexico). This thorough, well organized, volume is in my opinion the most comprehensive treatment available nowadays. It is mainly devoted to the probabilistic structural safety analysis and includes both theoretical foundations and practical examples in a coherent and logical presentation. It follows a clear step by step scheme (a quite useful feature for newcomers) covering basic issues such as measures of structural reliability and more complex and advanced topics including time dependent reliability and resistance and load modeling. The book also contains a brief on probabilistic theory which I've found very useful as a quick (and refreshing) guide. For newcomers, the first two chapters are essential to understand the subject. The author devotes the core of the book to a rigorous, detailed discussion of methods to compute probability of failure in engineering structures with simple and complex (multiple) limit state functions (and their evolution with time). The Monte Carlo integration approach, the first order methods FOM and the first order second moment methods FOSM are reviewed in detail and practical aspects of their computational implementations are given. It is to underline the excellent discussions given of limit state functions in load-resistance space which allow to clearly understand the procedures and strategies used by the above mentioned reliability methods to compute checking points, safety index and probability of failure. The last part of the book is devoted to load and resistance modeling, codes of structural reliability and probabilistic evaluation of existing structures. Civil engineers will profit this part as I did because of the lack of reliable data on load and resistance structural parameters variability (in many fields, plausible probabilistic methods can be only achieved by judiciously assuming or modeling load and resistance fluctuations, so that these chapter are welcome). This book cover this subject in some detail, emphasizing in steel and concrete members. The probabilistic reliability assessment of existing structures, the latest subject covered by the book is useful in pointing out the necessity of appropriate repairs actions on such structures, how to estimate deterioration and which actions have to be carried out in order to reduce risk levels. Some drawbacks have to be mentioned: (i) practical examples are scarce in key sections such as 1.5.3 (generalized reliability problem formulation), 1.5.4 (conditional reliability problems) and 6.6.3 (FOSM/FOR methods for unconditional failure probability), (ii) the level of abstract thinking required to understand many aspects covered by the book could result quite demanding for newcomers or readers that do not master probabilistic theory, (iii) mathematical details given for the FOSM algorithm are rather cumbersome and only two references to practical computational implementations of this method are given. As a matter of fact, I`ve preferred and used a practical implementation of this method published by M. Ahammed and R. E. Melchers (the author) in Engineering Structures(Vol. 17, No. 2, page. 74), and (v) I`ve noted some typographical errors (for example, constant b4 used in expression A.59 must be negative valued -see the book by Abramowitz, pag. 239 ). In spite of these drawbacks, I strongly recommend this book for those people concerned with the subject, especially newcomers, I repeat, this is the best available textbook in the market ... The book is informative but i find it not using SI. In the Philippines we are using SI so it will be time consuming for conversion works. Also the topic for bridge design is limited. I hope it can be expanded by the author.
