Product Description
Waste tyres could be utilized as partial replacement in order to preserve natural resources such as sand and to prevent the environment from further damage due to improper disposal of the tyres. In response to these demands, three series of investigations were conducted in this project. For Part I, the laboratory trials were conducted to study the correlation between rubberized concrete paving blocks (RCPB) mixtures. Part II was carried out to investigate the manufacturing processes and the feasibility of producing RCPB in a commercial plant setting. In Part III of this study, Highway Accelerated Loading Instrument (HALI) was developed. RCPB pavement was tested with HALI and subjected to 10,000 cycles of load repetition. Results obtained from three-dimensional models showed control concrete paving blocks (CCPB) tend to yield slightly better than other types of RCPB. Despite better skid resistance and interlocking force of CCPB, the other types of RCPB containing crumb rubber showed a great improvement in toughness. Therefore, all types of RCPB can be introduced to various types of pavement according to the traffic volume and the application of the pavement. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not like new
The book is not as what it was described. The seller wrote that it is like new, but it has an amount of highlighting and writing in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook
As the author Hibbler does in all of his textbooks, there is little to no explanation surrounding the theory of the topics.20% of the textbook is explanation of the topics, while the rest of the textbook contains examples and problems. Many of the problems are much more complex than the examples given, but if you have a good professor for the class, you should be alright. That being said, Hibbler does a good job of depicting all of the structural analysis methods in a very simple, easy-to-understand way. Therefore if you read this textbook, you will learn a lot, especially simple and short cut ways to solve structural analysis problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Text Book Review - Structural Analysis (6th Edition), by Russell C. Hibbeler
This text book is great for describing both the introductory and advanced methods of structural analysis, i.e. statically determinate/indeterminate structures and matrix methods.ASCE-7 is referenced quite frequently in the beginning chapters of the text.Colorful diagrams are present throughout the text to give the reader a better understanding of the material. The only negative aspect of this text book is that it does not describe two-way floor loading very well.Recommendations: anyone who has an interest in structural engineering should buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Features Solutions to Complex Trusses
One characteristic of this book is the many complex trusses (including uncommon ones, and space trusses) that are featured. Otherwise, complex trusses can be broken down into a series of simpler ones.

There is also discussion of frames (including those with no sidesway), virtual work, Castigliano's theorem, matrix algebra, etc.

Product Description
Structural reliability has become a discipline of international interest, addressing issues such as the safety of buildings, bridges, towers and other structures. This book addresses the important issue of predicting the safety of structures at the design stage and also the safety of existing, perhaps deteriorating structures. Attention is focused on the development and definition of limit states such as serviceability and ultimate strength, the definition of failure and the various models which might be used to describe strength and loading.

Much consideration is given to problem formulation and to the various techniques which can be applied to problem solution. These include the First Order Second Moment method and their derivatives, as well as various Monte Carlo tchniques. Each of these are described in considerable detail and example applications are given. Structural systems are also described, as is the effect of time on reliability estimation, and on the development of design code rules on the basis of limit state principles as under-pinned by probability theory. Furthermore, procedures for the reliability estimation of existing structures are also included.

The book emphasises concepts and applications, built up from basic principles and avoids undue mathematical rigour. It presents an accesible and unified account of the theory and techniques for the analysis of the reliability of engineering structures using probability theory. A balanced view of the subject is offered here not only for newcomers, but also for the more specialist reader, such as senior undergraduate and post-graduate students and practising engineers in civil, structural, geotechnical and mechanical engineering. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book is very complete and easy to read. It helped me a lot during the development of my master's dissertation.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook!
I bought this book (at Amazon.com) to get a better understanding on the basic principles of structural reliability assessment (I 'm concerned with the probabilistic estimation of the remaining life of pressurized pipelines containing active corrosion defects in oil and gas distribution pipeline networks in Mexico). This thorough, well organized, volume is in my opinion the most comprehensive treatment available nowadays. It is mainly devoted to the probabilistic structural safety analysis and includes both theoretical foundations and practical examples in a coherent and logical presentation. It follows a clear step by step scheme (a quite useful feature for newcomers) covering basic issues such as measures of structural reliability and more complex and advanced topics including time dependent reliability and resistance and load modeling. The book also contains a brief on probabilistic theory which I've found very useful as a quick (and refreshing) guide. For newcomers, the first two chapters are essential to understand the subject. The author devotes the core of the book to a rigorous, detailed discussion of methods to compute probability of failure in engineering structures with simple and complex (multiple) limit state functions (and their evolution with time). The Monte Carlo integration approach, the first order methods FOM and the first order second moment methods FOSM are reviewed in detail and practical aspects of their computational implementations are given. It is to underline the excellent discussions given of limit state functions in load-resistance space which allow to clearly understand the procedures and strategies used by the above mentioned reliability methods to compute checking points, safety index and probability of failure. The last part of the book is devoted to load and resistance modeling, codes of structural reliability and probabilistic evaluation of existing structures. Civil engineers will profit this part as I did because of the lack of reliable data on load and resistance structural parameters variability (in many fields, plausible probabilistic methods can be only achieved by judiciously assuming or modeling load and resistance fluctuations, so that these chapter are welcome). This book cover this subject in some detail, emphasizing in steel and concrete members. The probabilistic reliability assessment of existing structures, the latest subject covered by the book is useful in pointing out the necessity of appropriate repairs actions on such structures, how to estimate deterioration and which actions have to be carried out in order to reduce risk levels. Some drawbacks have to be mentioned: (i) practical examples are scarce in key sections such as 1.5.3 (generalized reliability problem formulation), 1.5.4 (conditional reliability problems) and 6.6.3 (FOSM/FOR methods for unconditional failure probability), (ii) the level of abstract thinking required to understand many aspects covered by the book could result quite demanding for newcomers or readers that do not master probabilistic theory, (iii) mathematical details given for the FOSM algorithm are rather cumbersome and only two references to practical computational implementations of this method are given. As a matter of fact, I`ve preferred and used a practical implementation of this method published by M. Ahammed and R. E. Melchers (the author) in Engineering Structures(Vol. 17, No. 2, page. 74), and (v) I`ve noted some typographical errors (for example, constant b4 used in expression A.59 must be negative valued -see the book by Abramowitz, pag. 239 ). In spite of these drawbacks, I strongly recommend this book for those people concerned with the subject, especially newcomers, I repeat, this is the best available textbook in the market ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Developed as a resource for practicing engineers, while simultaneously serving as a text in a formal classroom setting, Wind and Earthquake Resistant Buildings provides a fundmental understanding of the behavior of steel, concrete, and composite building structures. The text format follows, in a logical manner, the typical process of designing a building, from the first step of determining design loads, to the final step of evaluating its behavior for unusual effects.

Includes a worksheet that takes the drudgery out of estimating wind response.

The book presents an in-depth review of wind effects and outlines seismic design, highlighting the dymamic behavior of buildings. It covers the design and detailing the requirements of steel, concrete, and composite buidlings assigned to seismic design categories A through E. The author explains critical code specific items and structural concepts by doing the nearly impossible feat of addressing the history, reason for existence, and intent of major design provisions of the building codes. While the scope of the book is intentionally broad, it provides enough in-depth coverage to make it useful for structural engineers in all stages of their careers.

Features

  • Discusses the latest approaches for calculating lateral forces using the newly published ASCE 7-02 provisions
  • Describes the static, dynamic, and time-history analysis of using seismic design provisions of ASCE 7-02, IBC 2003, NFPA 5000, AISC 341-02, ACI 318-02, FEMA 350 and 356, UBC 1997, and the Blue Book-1997
  • Explores traditional and newer types of bracing systems and allows the reader to attain a fundamental understanding of their behavior
  • Covers the restoration of damaged or seismically vulnerable buildings with a special emphasis on seismic rehabilitation of hospitals and schools
  • Elucidates the differences between a "code-sponsored design and an alternate design philosophy based on the concept of Ductility Trade-Off for Strength"
  • Highlights earthquake hazard mitigation technologies including seismic base isolation, passive energy dissipation, and damping systems
  • Provides an abundance of examples applicable to real buildings and includes just enough explanations to drive home the underlying basic principles

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
Bayesian methods are a powerful tool in many areas of science and engineering, especially statistical physics, medical sciences, electrical engineering, and information sciences. They are also ideal for civil engineering applications, given the numerous types of modeling and parametric uncertainty in civil engineering problems. For example, earthquake ground motion cannot be predetermined at the structural design stage. Complete wind pressure profiles are difficult to measure under operating conditions. Material properties can be difficult to determine to a very precise level - especially concrete, rock, and soil. For air quality prediction, it is difficult to measure the hourly/daily pollutants generated by cars and factories within the area of concern. It is also difficult to obtain the updated air quality information of the surrounding cities. Furthermore, the meteorological conditions of the day for prediction are also uncertain. These are just some of the civil engineering examples to which Bayesian probabilistic methods are applicable.

    • Familiarizes readers with the latest developments in the field
    • Includes identification problems for both dynamic and static systems
    • Addresses challenging civil engineering problems such as modal/model updating
    • Presents methods applicable to mechanical and aerospace engineering
    • Gives engineers and engineering students a concrete sense of implementation
    • Covers real-world case studies in civil engineering and beyond, such as:
      • structural health monitoring
      • seismic attenuation
      • finite-element model updating
      • hydraulic jump
      • artificial neural network
      • air quality prediction
    • Includes other insightful daily-life examples
    • Companion website with MATLAB code downloads for independent practice
    • Written by a leading expert in the use of Bayesian methods for civil engineering problems

This book is ideal for researchers and graduate students in civil and mechanical engineering or applied probability and statistics. Practicing engineers interested in the application of statistical methods to solve engineering problems will also find this to be a valuable text.

    Product Description

This comprehensive textbook, now in its sixth edition, combines classical and matrix-based methods of structural analysis and develops them concurrently. New solved examples and problems have been added, giving over 140 worked examples and more than 400 problems with answers.

Its introductory chapter on structural analysis modelling gives a good grounding to the beginner, showing how structures can be modelled as beams, plane or space frames and trusses, plane grids or assemblages of finite element. Idealization of loads, anticipated deformations, deflected shapes and bending moment diagrams are presented. Readers are also shown how to idealize real three-dimensional structures into simplified models that can be analyzed with little or no calculation, or by more involved calculations using computers. Dynamic analysis, essential for structures subject to seismic ground motion, is further developed in this edition and in a code-neutral manner. The topic of structural reliability analysis is discussed in a new chapter.

Translated into six languages, this textbook is of considerable international renown, and is widely recommended by many civil and structural engineering lecturers to their students because of its clear and thorough style and content.

I have used this book for 6 months now as I have written my masters thesis in structural engineering and have come to really appreciate it.My fellow graduate students and I have marveled at the amazing analysis methods it contains. It is not intended to be a topic specific book, but an overview of structural analysis (hence the name). The book gives new ideas for solving problems that I have never known before. One can then research the method more in-depth if necessary.By the way, if you want a book with more than two chapters on finite element analysis (as one reviewer lamented), then buy a finite element book, but if you want a great structural analysis reference then I recommend this one.

An authoritative text by one of the premier researchers in usability engineering in the 1990s, Jakob Nielsen's Usability Engineering provides a landmark guide to software design that has helped bring this area of research into the mainstream of computing. "Usability" is the measurement of how easy or difficult it is to be productive with a piece of software. It often looks at the user interface--what elements appear onscreen and how efficient, confusing, and/or intuitive they are for beginning, intermediate, and advanced users. "Usability engineering" is the formal study of usability. It grew out of research on human factors, which looked at the way people interact with their environment.

The best thing about this book is its concise, cut-to-the-chase approach when defining usability and ways to measure and improve it. As the author notes, in the old days of computing, documents that attempted to define usability might have over 1,000 rules. The author offers just a handful of guiding principles for creating better software that apply even today. (Published just before the Internet revolution, this book's principles still hold true for Web designers, as well as those who create more traditional applications.)

Throughout this text, the author argues for the benefits of improved software usability. With software use as with all things, time is money and making more efficient interfaces translates into lower personnel costs and more productivity. The book also does a fine job of integrating usability design into the software development process, with guides for planning, working with end users, and running tests with users (whether on videotape or in person). The 50-page bibliography attests to the author's previous research on usability.

For anyone who needs to create better, more efficient software, Usability Engineering can help. This clear and intelligent guide to the science of usability engineering has helped enhance the potential of computers to work with end users more efficiently. In the new century, software developers will undoubtedly seek new advances in usability, in part because of the groundwork laid by books like this one. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Usability basics, measuring usability, types of users, history of user interfaces, the usability engineering lifecycle, design techniques, heuristics and hints for improving usability, testing, managing user tests, assessing usability, interface standards, internationalization, and Computer-Aided Usability Engineering (CAUSE) tools. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Some thing old, some thing new...
I'm not a usability expert, and this didn't quite match up with what I hoped to get out a of class on software evaluation for librarians (but that has more to do with the professor's slant on the subject and choice of book), but the book was easy to read and I felt that it covered some good points. It is, however, starting to show its age in some of the details, like the assumption that many software users will be unfamiliar with PCs and using a mouse to interact with a PC.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for user interface pros, too much for developers
If your specialty is the user interface, you need to read this book.If you are interested in developing a user interface design process, you should read this.If you are a software developer who wants to know how to build good interfaces, skip it.It is too much about perfecting the design process.

I was looking for 'use this button for x and this widget for y'.In other words, here are the rules for a good user interface. What I got was 'here is the process for studying users and their interfaces, and here is a mountain of statistics to back it up'.No fault of the author, I just mis-understood what I was getting.

Having said that, if you want to make your living studying and perfecting interface design, read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read if you want people to use your software
If you are an experienced user interface designer who thoroughly understands what usability is about you probably don't need to read the book (although I would find it strange that you are experienced and did not read this book which is attributed to have coined the term "Usability Engineering").

So who should read the book.Everybody that is going to develop any form of software. No, it won't make you an expert, but it will get you thinking.

On the negative side, some of the examples may some be slightly old (but its a 1993 book!).Sometimes you're also going to feel that you could stress this concept in half the space. However, the information and the thought process behind the information is extremely relevant and is well-worth the effort of reading the book.

If you are new in software development this book is an absolute must.In a sense it helps you develop "a way of thinking" rather than giving any specifics.

However, if you are looking for specifics, Chapter 5 deals with usability heuristics, presenting 10 of them. When looking at the list of 10 heuristics, they may seem obvious, trivial almost. It is quite amazing, however, how often those seemingly trivial things are overlooked or ignored.Just use some programs on your PC...

I think it would be worthwhile any software developers time to read Chapter 5 and think long and hard about what is said - then go back to your software and be honest with yourself. It might be some of the best lessons you'll ever learn.

In lots of ways this book has everything that classics are made of - except occasionally the ease of reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, read this review:
If his own principles had been applied to the book it could be reduced to a a few bullet points.

*the web is slow, less is more.

*tell people what a link leads too before they press it, and make sure it does.

*use standard fonts in easy to read colours.

*use standard web conventions where ever possible as they are familiar.

*check for spelling mistakes and grammar errors.

*write concisely and arrange depth of detail in hierarchies, like they do in errr reference books.

*tell the user where they are, and how they got their, um like a path prehaps.

*some people have small screens, some don't even use microsoft browsers, not everyone has the latest plug ins, allow for it.

*don't employ frustrated artists to design your site, use an engineer.

Jakob proudly states he has multiple patents in the field of usability, maybe following this book will infringe them, or maybe he just kept the good stuff for himself.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Do what I say, not what I do!"
The title I use is an old portuguese proverb. It is a good description of this book. In page 115 it says: "User interfaces should be simplified as much as possible,...". And then it takes almost 8 pages to explain it. Read it. His advices are pure gold. But don't build your user interface like this book was built: overcrowded with unnecessary details. There's another funny thing about this book. It's about design, mostly graphical. But doesn't talk to much about "creativity". ... Read more

He does not provide enough examples or detail in the solutions to the examples. He leaves out moments by parts and does not detail the sections sufficiently. The Leet text is better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible.
This is a horrible text for structural analysis. It isn't easy to understand, the examples are terrible, the problems at the end of the chapter are hard to understand, and the solution manual has errors everywhere. This is an all around bad book. I hate to say it but it's true.

1-0 out of 5 stars No good
This is a very poor text for structural analysis. The examples are absolutely terrible. Luckily I have a decent professor who explains what is going on. Also, there are several mistakes throughout the text and I often found myself refering to my Strengths books to help with the shear and moment diagrams, and beam deflection because this book did a horrible job explaining those topics. I highly recommend you use a supplementary text along with this if you are using this book for a structural class.-M.

This book is a good source of information in regards to masonry design; it is fairly complete and is easy to comprehend. I wish it had more in depth examples however.

Currently I am more involved in project management; however, once and a while I get the change to do some structural design or evaluate the work of other engineers. This book is a good source of current code updates for me.
