2-0 out of 5 stars everything and nothing
.Book about everything in bridge design that gives nothing usable..briefly explained topics, poor quality of graphics and photos, lack of important details and discussion about them etc.. are only some of remarks,...theoretic and to general....worth mentioning is section regarding seismic design...find another book on bridge design

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
IT cover all aspects of bridge design. You will find any topic related to bridge design in this book. It will give a good introductory knowledge, then you can move to more specific books. Examples are clear and good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why doesn't the descriptions state what units are used???
I still don't understand why these book descriptions don't say what units are used. This entire book is in Metric and is pretty much useless to me other than the basic theory. I also have the Design of Highway Bridges by Barker Puckett and it is metric as well. At least include design examples in English units also!So be warned, if you want an excellent bridge engineering handbook that uses English units then this book is not for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Completed book
It is one of the most beautiful book that I have read and studied before. From beginning to end all valuable ideas are in order. All kind of bridges (arch,suspended...)are avaliable.Spported with nice sketches and photos ofbridges from all over the world.Giving an inspritation to an Engineer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use
This text does a very good job on demonstrating material with lots of sample problems. It also avoids tedious derivations of formulas that should already be second nature by the time you use a book of this level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Reference
I am a plant metallurgist for a company and I constantly use this book to look at properties for various materials. The book is relatively small (unlike ASM books) and contains loads of hard to find information.

5-0 out of 5 stars More useful data than a dozen handbooks
Smith's book is excellent for two reasons:

1) His explainations of the properties, structure and applicaiton of various alloys is simple and to the point.(Many of them are somewhat out of date, but so is every other textbook in the world.)Excellent for metallurgists.

2) This book is so loaded with tables, you may never have to look any mechanical property data up in the library again.Excellent for mechanical engineers.

Although expensive, this book will replace a dozen others on your desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book is written from the prospective of a metallurgist. As such, it contains a very good discussion on the physical structure of various engineering materials, heat treatments, and alloy effects. However, italso contains lots of material data useful for engineering.

This is anexcellent book for those interested in more than stress-strain curves andyield stresses of engineering materials. ... Read more

Product Description
In the developed world the design and construction of all aspects of the built environment are regulated by rules and procedures which help prevent failures. When compared to the volume of construction undertaken, the number of failures of buildings and other structures is thankfully small. However, this reality is not reflected on a global basis. Failures do occur, some making headline news, and for a variety of reasons. As such information about failures is vital to make construction even safer. This book has been written by a number of distinguished international experts, and considers numerous facets of what has become termed by many forensic engineering. It covers the spectrum of this discipline with chapters on: risk assessment and management; aspects of the law and construction insurance; limiting the incidence of failures; how failures have been investigated; and remedial works carried out. Numerous case studies and examples from across the world cover not only modern buildings, structures and elements, but some buildings that can truly be described as historic. The spread and depth of topics covered is remarkable and illustrates the importance of this subject in modern engineering and design. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book full of many mistakes and typos
I just took a class this semester on Concrete design and analysis. This was the main textbook used in class, and it was awful. The book is laden with theory, which becomes extremely confusing and, therefore, useless. One of the main reasons I dislike this textbook is because of the many errors and typos found in most of the chapters. This was annoying since the difference between reduction factors of 0.7 and 0.75 is huge when it comes to design and analysis of anything from beams, slabs, shear reinforcement to footings.
The only thing I did like is that the author refers heavily to the ACI. I ended up using the ACI as my main reference in class instead of this horrible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase if you want to learn concrete design!
This book will cover everything in the ACI 318-08 Design Manual that you will need for reinforced concrete design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, up to date reference, but has flaws.
I bought this becuase I needed an updated text book for the PE exam.I was able to extract almost everything I needed from this book.I am glad I bought it and it's probably about the best you'll find.It has plenty of flaws although nothing I couldn't live with.

One thing I do not like is the overwhelming clutter on the pages with calculations. The information is logical and it's good, but it takes some staring to get used to it.Often times there are variables like Mu that are used to represent strength and load in the same step which is confusing.I found myself renaming a lot of variables becuase of that.

Keep an eye out for algebra errors.I wish there was an errata for this on amazon becuase I tend to find plenty of numerical errors and typos.Just be wary and double check the calcs.

My old text had flow charts for everything. This text does offer a summary at the end of each chapter.I'm a visual person and I had to draw up my own flow charts to consolidate the information in a logical manner so I can quickly go through designs by hand.

There are some subjects that are barely touched in this book that I really wished were included. There is little to no information on tilt-up panel design and shear walls.I have to turn to the SEAOC yellow book (3rd edition) for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
Excellent texbook.Explains in detail concepts and provide adequate problems depicting the new concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Graduate Book...

4-0 out of 5 stars Probability,Reliability, and Statiscal Methods in Engineering Design
This book was ordered per the request from Professor at University of California, San Diego - Structural Engineering Department

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply superb !
As a reliability engineer, I do a lot of probabilistic risk analysis and reliability based design for large systems like gas turbines, etc. From both a theoretical and applied perspective, this is an excellent text for those getting into this subject.

The book is written in a pleasing style, in which complex ideas are introduced in a manner than anyone (with no prior statistical training) can understand. It is a small book that packs a lot of information in it, and the companion volume by the same authors is another excellent text on the same topic. I particularly liked their treatment of LRFD methods and the FORM algorithms.

On the negative side, I found the algorithms described in Madsen's "Methods of structural safety" easier to implement. The authors might want to incorporate some of those methods in their next edition. They could also discuss approaches to model time-dependent reliability, apart from including empirical probability distributions in design.

Overall, I have read most of the texts out there in reliability-based design and this is clearly the best. It's an expensive book, but well worth the money !

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is One of the Best
This book is among one of the best books in this subject. It captures all different aspects of probability, reliability and statistical methods in engineering design in one book with clear details and examples. The latestadvancements in this area are also included in this book.I do recommendit for any engineering student taking courses in this area. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book (that I know of) in this category
This is the best book I know of on the topic of structural renovation of buildings.Though probably no book could answer every question you might have, the 800+ pages of this book will answer most of them.

The author, Alexander Newman, is clearly an experienced expert, so this book is authoritative and has a very practical orientation, with a straightforward writing style, both basic and specialized information on a wide variety of topics, and plenty of helpful illustrations of details which can be used on your projects.

I should also add that much of the information in this book is directly relevant to structures other than buildings, so don't miss out on this book if you're involved in renovation of other types of structures.

Highly recommended to anyone involved in structural renovation, and worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Description of the How's and Why's of Renovation
Excellent book and very practical - explains how and why to renovate and discusses the complications and consequences of some renovations. It also discusses whether demolish-and-rebuild should be considered or when to perform complex analyses that may demonstrate that renovation can be avoided.

I admit to being a bit biased. I received this book as part of an ASCE course taught by the author. However the book was supplementary material, not the text of the course, and I learned many additional things by reading the book after the course.

This book covers renovation due to seismic and wind loading, and also as a result of change of use, damage, and deterioration due to age. Steel, concrete, wood, unreinforced masonry, slabs-on-grade, and pre-engineered metal building systems are covered. The book explains testing methods (destructive and non-destructive) and the limitations of, or difficulty in using these methods. It discusses the history and evolution of the different types of construction and how that impacts renovation.

Some topics are explicitly omitted (e.g. post-tensioned slabs-on-grade, bonded post-tensioned structures), and discussion of interior non-structural features is limited to a few pages. Many renovation procedures are fully described, and when the user is referred elsewhere for more detailed information, these references are generally readily available - e.g., ACI specs or AISC Design Guides. Possible negative consequences of various remediation methods are discussed.

Overall this is a thorough and thought-provoking coverage of structural renovation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for structural rehabilitation
I have had to design and manage a number of structural rehabilitations; I wish I would have had this book ten years ago. It is an excellent reference for engineers with both limited and extensive experience in structural retrofitting and rehabilitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pragmatic Building Restoration Guide -- at Last!
While this text explores renovation of a wide variety of building systems -- reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, wood, steel, masonry -- from a structural engineering perspective, it is quite pragmatically written and a non-engineer will derive considerable benefit from it.The book provides an excellent and detailed guide to critical issues that are confronted in period restoration, including making transparent best practices for undertaking the investigative process to evaluate salvagable components and structures for each type of building system.Filled with well-researched historical data about material types, it also contains excellent reference sections at the end of each chapter. An outstanding resource for those who are serious about building restoration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas for refurbishment
A comprehensive book but with some strange omissions: very little on foundations or restrained brickwork. Also, the section on FRPs looks like it came straight out of a contractor's brochure. But these don't really detract that much. Strongly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description

Developments in Earthquake Engineering have focussed on the capacity and response of structures. They often overlook the importance of seismological knowledge to earthquake-proofing of design. It is not enough only to understand the anatomy of the structure, you must also appreciate the nature of the likely earthquake.

Seismic design, as detailed in this book, is the bringing together of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. It focuses on the seismological aspects of design – analyzing various types of earthquake and how they affect structures differently. Understanding the distinction between these earthquake types and their different impacts on buildings can make the difference between whether a building stands or falls, or at least to how much it costs to repair.

Covering the basis and basics of the major international codes, this is the essential guide for professionals working on structures in earthquake zones around the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Generally enjoyable reading for mature structural engineers
This small book is a quick and generally enjoyable read for the mature structural engineer interested in reflecting on the broader aspects of the profession (or rather reading the reflections of a few eminent colleagues).

The book basically consists of eight short essays, each by a different author.Their quality varies significantly, and I didn't find any of them to be particularly focused or systematic. In fact, a couple were downright rambling and bordering on incoherent.

However, the paucity of literature on this topic earns the book two stars just for existing, and the essays are generally good enough to add two more stars, giving a total of four stars.

I bought the book years ago, when the price was much lower, and I think it's worth what I paid. However, I would have been somewhat disappointed with the book if I had paid the current new price of over $100.At that price, I think the audience for this book is limited to structural engineers with a very strong interest in books of this type, or for whom cost isn't an issue.

Product Description
The Structural Engineer's Pocket Book is the only compilation of all tables, data, facts and formulae needed for scheme design by structural engineers in a handy-sized format. Bringing together data from many sources into a compact, affordable pocketbook, it saves valuable time spent tracking down information needed regularly.

This new and improved edition has been updated throughout, expanding previous chapters and reflecting changes to the British Standards, as well as including a whole new section on sustainability covering general concepts, materials, actions and targets for structural engineers.

Although small in size, this book contains the facts and figures needed for preliminary design whether in the office, on-site or in the IStructE Part 3 Exam. Based on UK conventions, the Structural Engineer's Pocket Book is split into 14 sections including geotechnics, structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber.

* Time-saving, affordable, first-point-of-reference for structural and civil engineers

Good handy book. Not as detailed in items as I would have liked. Layout in terms of Index could be better. Hard to find items at first

5-0 out of 5 stars A purely functional reference for Structural Engineers!
Keeping me at hand for every bit of information at the right place and at the right time! It's simply functional, what more can I ask for!>>>>

2-0 out of 5 stars Written for the UK structural engieer
There was no indication that this pocket book was written based on data for Great Britain.I discovered this only after it arrived!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book IF you live in the UK!
The laws, codes and building types are all UK (Great Britain).Pretty useless in the good ole US of A.

All the structural stuff is in metric (Yea, I know we should use metric, but we don't).

And all the shapes are British Standard.

Heck of a nice book, but wrong country. ... Read more
