2-0 out of 5 stars A mile wide and an inch deep
I teach a college level surveying class. This book attempts to cover too much data without going into adequate detail. For an introductory class, it covers the basics too fast. For an advanced class, it does not dealadequately with the specifics. As an instructor, the book offers nosupport such as answer keys or internet support.I recommend Brinker &Wolf for intro classes and Constructions Surveying and Layout by Crawfordfor construction surveying classes.

2-0 out of 5 stars BOOK IS NOT AS INFORMATIVE AS ONE WOULD HOPE.
As an instructor, I found the problems associated with the LandSurveying field to be dated and calculations to be incorrect at times. It would help to have an answer key in order to figure out if your questions that the author wrote, can actually come up with the correct answers.I have been requesting an "Answer Key" for 2 years and yet to be able to receive one.I work for USD 501 and Teach Land Surveying. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just As Good
Last summer, when I graduated with an associate degree in land surveying, I have been trying to get a hold of the second edition, 1001 Solved Surveying Fundamentals Problems, 2nd ed., since that was all I had ever heard of, but I always found it no less that $400 dollars which is a rip-off.Finally I saw a link that said there was a third edition, this book, for less than a hundred.I was skeptical, but it is just as good. (Yes, I have used the second edition and know the comparison)So unless you are really into antique collecting, just get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Studying for the FS
I'm studying for the FS and I've found this book to be very helpful for example problems, but your definitely going to need to get the Reference Manual as well because that explains in more detail on how to do problems.

The author relates a wealth of experience and provides proven methods of how boats should be built. The side stories of how things can go wrong were very entertaining and reenforced the technical side of the book. The bookis written from the european view and could use more info on fiberglassvessels. The drawings and photos were very good and the accompaniedcaptions very detailed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Information- But Dated
Originally published in 1974 this book has lots of information on older style (wood) boats (wood) masts etc. Also the book is written more to the "want to be a surveyor?- this is how you do it" instead of"looking for a used boat?-here is what details to check out. AlsoNicholson is practices in Scotland and is geared toward european boats asopposed to us boats. I would suggest "Surveying Fiberglasssailboats" by Mustin as a better choice. Would I buy again? No. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference for Setting up a Garden Railroad Empire
I was looking for a readable reference book to assist with topographic and detailed survey of a steeply graded 5 acre property, with a view to setting up a live steam model railroad. This book hits the target very well, with practical guidance and worked examples of all the steps needed to go about the job of surveying and setting out buildings, roads etc.

The book also gives sufficient broad information on both traditional and modern surveying tools and instruments, to allow one to make sensible decisions about the range of investment options availabe to cover basic and more complex surveying and setting out.

3-0 out of 5 stars should be better
great book except that the maps are too small. I don't understand why all the maps needed to be orientated up, it means that most of the pages are 75% blank white paper and thus make the maps extremely small and hard to read. Kinda strange for a map book?

great book, but whoever was the layout editor should be fired...

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect Christmas present for your uncle in Nantucket
If you like maps, or if you like the history of the Massachusetts shore, you'll love this book by Joseph Garver.Eighty-nine map plates are each beautifully reproduced on a single 8x12 inch page, with a facing page--usually just one--that explains the map. Thus the book is not a detailed scholarly account of either the mapmakers or their subject. At the same time, the explanations are concise, elegant, and erudite, with wonderful pearls that explain how the maps came to be made and about what the maps can tell us of the changing history of the towns. It is more cohesive than Mapping Boston, and more accessible than McCorkle's New England in Early Printed Maps.Garvers is the reference librarian of the Harvard Map Collection, and it shows, both in the broad collection of maps he has located from ten different collections, and in the deep knowledge of mapmaking revealed in the text. ...
