1-0 out of 5 stars Needs a heavydose of editing
I just bought this title a few weeks ago.The few chapters I read through and examined so far are full of mistakes, omissions and oversights such as incomplete sketches, text not matching the diagrams it tries to describe, errors in formulas and typographic errors.A few of the methods described are cumbersome and some chapters are just plain meaningless.
If there is ever to be a second edition of this book, which, granted this, serves a basic need, it better be accompanied by a really careful revision and serious editing effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Layed Out & user friendly
The book by engineer Paul Stull is just super. It is easy to understand & Paul's layout & surveying methods can be used & understood immediately by the novice. It is not only great for laying out sites for the building tradesman or woman but it can also be used by cabinet makers like myself for layouts in the shop. You know those trig. classes we all slept through in school???? Well Paul Stull makes sense out of all that was boring. Can't wait to get my own edition of this book, since I have been borrowing a friend's. This book is a great tool for architects, landscapers, contractors, wanna be excavators, carpenters & cabinetmakers etc. Gotta have it...... Herb Soss ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent surveying text
This text is a continuation of the high quality of earlier editions. It covers modern methods, without completely removing some of the more useful older methods of work. It is delivered in a compact form, without any loss of depth. Also, it is at least $14 cheaper than any comparable US surveying text.

Well-tested methods are provided here, and the text is sufficiently comprehensive to cover several courses at a range of different levels. This would cover a great deal of what is needed for an associates degree program, and the foundation of a Bachelors program (1.5 years of the main program). This is far better than most books in this field, and it is a better book.

Being a British book, there are a few limitations for the US market. The book is metric, which will pain a few people in the US who can't handle this (but then why are they in the surveying game?). The terminology is British (e.g. 'staff' vs 'rod'), but this is a relatively minor concern, and will expose students to the idea that Surveying is a multi-national discipline, especially important with FIG being based in the US at the moment. There is no coverage of cadastral issues, including PLSS, but that can be obtained from other works, and doesn't apply to all parts of the US, as it happens.

Highly recommended. It is the OSU text for Surveying and Geomatics Engineering students. ... Read more

Product Description
The Manual has guided the original surveys and resurveys of the Public Lands, first through the General Land Office, and since 1946, through the Bureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior. While not written specifically for non-Federal surveyors, the principles contained in the Manual on the subject of retracement are an integral part of private surveying in the 30 Public Land States. Further, many States have formally adopted the Manual in statute, rule, and/or case law as guidance for private licensed surveyors. Thus, the book is a fundamental piece of the complex subject of boundary surveys here in the United States ... Read more

Midwest Book Review
Recommended techniques are described in detail, and a survey checklist as well as in-depth notes round this solid guide ... literally priceless and an absolute 'must-have'.

Multihull Review
The detail of the book is excellent; the section on non-destructive testing particularly so. The book dedicates nearly 70 pages to Survey techniques and here the budding surveyor is given a really superb aide memoire including a checklist to follow to ensure nothing is missed.

UK Cruising Association
The writing is authoritative and presents the complexity of structural small ship design in understandable and comprehensive language. This book would aid and assist anyone contemplating the commissioning of a survey. A valuable addition to the library.

Soundings
The latest in marine surveying technology is covered in the expanded and updated edition.

Dockwalk
This is a very sound practical textbook which could earn its keep on your bookshelf.

Work Boat World
A highly refined book that looks at every imaginable aspect of the design, construction, equipping, fitout and finishing of ships and boats, it is clear, concise and easy to follow.

1-0 out of 5 stars "MARINE SURVEYING"Review
I was given this book to review by the YDSA, being a practising yacht surveyor in Britain. I found it to be a very poor book, written by somebody who, so far as can be seen, is not a marine surveyor but a lecturer in marine ventilation. A colleague who also reviewed the book agreed.

It would be of no help, and could be misleading.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have".
Now in an updated second edition, Handbook of Marine Surveying is a guide for both students and professionals of marine surveying. as well as boatyard operators and boat owners with an interest in the field. Illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs, Handbook of Marine Surveying covers how to inspect and judge the quality of all aspects of a boat - from discerning signs of fatigue, buckling, or corrosion to the pros and cons of the wood, plastic, or metals in a boat's composition, to overseeing hulls, propellers, engine systems, and mechanical systems, to evaluating safety equipment and much more. Recommended techniques are described in detail, and a survey checklist as well as in-depth notes round this solid guide. Human lives depend upon the marine surveyor's expert determination of a boat's seaworthiness - making Handbook of Marine Surveying literally priceless and an absolute "must-have".

1-0 out of 5 stars Better to buy something else
This text was written by a (now retired) community college professor for use in civil engineering and construction technology courses in an Associates Degree program. The text does not stray far from a basic, introductory course outline.

The money spent on this small volume couldbe applied to purchase of a more complete and long-lasting reference. There are many introductory surveying books that are less expensive, encompass a wider range of topics, have a similar practical approach, present numerous example problems and solution sets, etc., etc. (See, forexample, Kavanagh and Bird's "Surveying: Principles andApplications" also by Prentice Hall). ... Geodesy is the science that deals with the Earth's figure and the interrelationship of selected points on its surface. This is the only book on the market designed to provide readers with an introduction to geodesy without the usual emphasis on complex mathematics. Describes such positioning techniques as horizontal and vertical geodetic datums. Satellite geodesy, electromagnetic distance measurement, laser ranging and emerging technologies including the global positioning techniques and GIS are among the topics discussed. Features scores of two-color diagrams and examples to facilitate understanding. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars this is a very overpriced general introduction book..
I put this book in the same catgory as the ebay ripoff books, It's a very thin book with one page discussions on various topics, and simple cave man style geometry drawings.

So if you don't need it as a college text book, then please get a better book, as this one is nearly useless to understand how anything works in any concrete manner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but needs works
This book was on average OK. I thought it was a good overview but at the end I don't think I got as much as I wanted from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good background for people interested in GIS and cartography
I bought this book to fill in knowledge gaps, not to learn geodesy as an expert. It answered lots of questions I had had about measurements, how surveys are performed, geodetic systems (datums and so on), the WGS, and the use of gravity. The details are all there, within about 100 pages in the middle of the book. Not bad at all.

This subject by its nature requires a mathematical treatment, so although the book does not go deeply into the math, it's sometimes heavy reading. Many of the illustrations deserve careful study, too. It's not light bedtime reading.I carried this book around for several days during and after a large GIS conference and periodically dipped into it.It works well in small doses.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only partly successful in illuminating a tough subject.
Reading this book I got the feeling that Mr. Smith couldn't quite decide if his audience was the layman or the surveying professional. For example, very little mathematics is used (even though there are topics in the bookwhich would have been better served by a more mathematical treatment),while on the other hand many terms are used as though the reader should befamiliar with them already.

I found the lack of a glossary frustrating,as was Mr. Smith's habit of using concepts chapters ahead of theirdefintion. The difficult subject matter was further obscured by numerouserrors in the figures and text (such as refering to velocity as the secondintegral of acceleration.)

In the end, the book did give me a goodqualitative feel for the issues germane to geodesy, but I had to work veryhard to extract that information and found myself immediately looking for amore perspicuous text.

4-0 out of 5 stars An overall coverage of the history of modern geodesy
I found Mr. Smith's book to be very informative and well written. He covers many aspects of geodesy from early history to modern application. He is apparently very knowledgable and has a broad spectrum of experiences which he writes about. There are some instances when Mr. Smith tells a large amount of information, maybe more than the average reader would require. There are other times that I wished he would tell me more.He has a writing style that tends to skip around alot.Just hang in there and you will get the information in another chapter. There is always the bibliography for reference, if, Mr. Smith didn't cover it, which is rare indeed. He covers such obscure subjects such as: coriolis effect, isostasy and dynamic heights.Throughout the book all of the illustrations are simple yet understandable in almost all cases. ...
