Product Description
The Mayo Clinic Atlas of Regional Anesthesia and Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Blockade is a practical guide that provides a detailed and systematic approach to regional anesthesia of the upper and lower extremity, including ultrasound-guided regional techniques. The book provides a comprehensive overview of both traditional and ultrasound-guided techniques of brachial plexus, lumbar plexus, and lumbosacral plexus blockade. Each regional technique is clearly described and illustrated with ultrasound images accompanied by corresponding color anatomic illustrations.Specific information provided within each chapter includes clinical applications, relevant anatomy, surface anatomy, proceduralist and patient positioning, traditional and alternative approaches to the technique itself, needle insertion site, needle redirection cues, ultrasound Sonoanatomy, ultrasound-guided techniques, side effects and complications, and suggested reading.Special emphasis is given and abundantly illustrated on hand position and how to precisely grasp and manipulate the ultrasound probe and needle for each block technique.Successful regional anesthesia is predicated on a sound knowledge of anatomy and local anesthetic pharmacology - both of which are clearly presented and well-illustrated within the book. Finally, the text provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of ultrasonography, relevant Sonoanatomy of the upper and lower extremity, and the technical skills necessary to become clinically proficient at ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good call reference
This book is written in a bulleted outline format. I found it most helpful during call. I would go to this particular book for parameters on nonviable pregnancies and similar situations. This was easy to use on call. It may not be the most comprehensive ultrasound text, but there were plenty of pics in the book that are helpful. This is probably a better book for the beginning of residency and call.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality
This book is excellent. It covers the questions you are afraid to ask and progresses to the details you need to remember for oral boards. It will aslo serve as a good reference book in practice.I'm buying my second copy because my first was stolen.

Product Description

Proper ultrasound examination and interpretation hinges on thorough knowledge of the relevant anatomy, artifacts, and technique. This book provides an excellent foundation by going beyond pathology and concentrating on these fundamentals. Basic physics and artifact recognition and prevention are outlined. Chapters review essential anatomy and include images and tables that highlight relevant bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Sites of attachment and the best positions for examination are also noted. Technique is presented via a three-tiered approach and photographs of patients in the transducer position are matched with the resulting ultrasound images and complementary anatomical overlays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, bad pictures
I really like the text and layout of this book. Very instructive for beginner to intermediate sonographer. However, the print quality of the US images are relatively poor. The images themselves are probably perfectly good, but they look like photocopies instead of high quality prints. Maybe I just received a bad printing. The anatomy pictures are very nice, high resolution, glossy print, and very easy to interpret. I hope that in future printings, the publishers will make the US images higher quality. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disjointed, Confusing, and Too Much Math!
I was forced to use this book for 2 of my classes in my Vascular Ultrasound program.Despite the fact that my math background goes through the second semester of calculus, I found all of equation derivasions to be confusing as well as useless. The (dis)organization of each chapter was into what was considered Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 material. This had the effect of making. any effort to go back and review a particular point nearly an impossibility--I always found I was trying to look something up in Level 2--when it was really in Level 3 (or Level 1!).I just took (and Passed!) my Sonographic Physics and Instrumentation Board exam today, and found that trying to review using this book was worse than useless!Get yourself a good set of flashcards instead! If I hadn't I would have to take the Board exam again!

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to understand
I think this book is Ok to learn ultrasound physics. We are using it in our class right now.We went through and did all of level one now we are going back and doing level two/three.I think Miele is a very very smart guy.A lot of things he seems to go way more in depth then what I believe we will need.My teacher swears by the book though.I guess we will see when it comes time for all of us to take our boards

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for sonographers!!
This text should be adopted by all Diagnostic Ultrasound schools.
This is an invaluable text for both those wishing to understand ultrasound and those preparing for their board exams. The text is organized in a way to meet anyones learning style with lots of questions and a very well done CD.

I was recently at a board review course at which Mr. Miele was presenting, he followed the two volume text in his presentation and made untrasound physics come to life.I came to realize the importance of this material in everyday clinical ultrasound.Everyone I spoke with was thankful for the first chapter in the text, Mathematics, which clearly demonstrates the need to understand these principles and shows you how you can come to that understanding. There may not be a lot of calculations on the boards, but there is a lot of math. Thanks to this text, many will be prepared for their boards and have a more clear understanding of physics in their everyday practice.

how best to manage them. Working backwards from the fetal finding or maternal problem,
this practical resource explores potential diagnostic routes and management plans.
Throughout the book, the author uses ‘case in point’ examples to focus on how to extract
the most useful information from a standard ultrasound examination. Dr. Hobbins, who
has spent more than three decades using ultrasound in a perinatal setting, also thoroughly
explores vital issues such as comprehensive examination of the fetal anatomy, the meaning of various abnormal findings, how ultrasound can be used to enhance the management of obstetrical
complications, dealing with discrepant biometry, diabetes and hypertension, advanced maternal age, preterm labor, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and safety of ultrasound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the SPI!
I used this book in combination with Edelman's workbook and his x-zone questions as well as school notes from my training.I just took the test today and passed with flying colors.I was really impressed with how much NEW information I learned using this book.I feel that my training was very in depth and intense when it comes to physics and I was very surprised this book actually had information that I did not know (and that WAS ON THE REGISTRY!).I also think the explanations were very clear and one of the easiest to learn.I love the Davies exams and would recommend it to anyone!

This author is from the United Kingdom andit is good to know that sonographers all over the world are doing good workin bascilly the same manner. ... Read more
