Product Description
An account of the different morphologies of vertebrate respiratory organs and structures. It explains the essence of different functional designs and strategies that have adaptively developed for the acquisition of molecular oxygen and elimination of carbon dioxide. The origins of the various respiratory systems are presented and debated from evolutionary, phylogenetic, behavioural and ecological perspectives. The book carefully outlines the interactions between the environment (the physical realm) and evolution and adaptation (the biological domain) that have set the composition and patterning of extant animal life. ... Product Description
This book is the product of a symposium held in 1998. The50 participants who attended this symposium represented federal andstate agencies, private corporations, and several universities.

The intent of this book, as with the symposium, is to see more clearlya complex and sometimes frustrating aspect of environmental research, namely, the responses of groups of individuals, species assemblages, and combinations of communities to the challenges posed byanthropogenic chemical modification of habitat. Through the use ofretrospective assessments, critical discussion, and examples ofrelevant contemporary research, participants in this effort haveexamined successes, failures, and promising opportunities. ... Product Description
Explore evolution by comparing the anatomy of different species as presented in the five fooks in this set (Bird, Fish, Frog, Horse, Turtle). In each book, full color photos create a visual dictionary of the key external anatomy of that animal. The left page of each 2-page spread has a photo showing the anatomical part (e.g., tail) in full color while the rest of the animal is shown in muted shades of gray. The right page presents a clear definition of that part with the defined term (e.g., tail) printed in red. These books are designed to meet the developmental needs of elementary-aged children. The title is in lower case so as not to discourage young readers. When you open the book, you arrive directly at the content; the copyright and ISBN information appear only on the outside back cover so it does not distract or discourage emerging readers. The outer corners are rounded to avoid tactile distractions. They are also sized for children?s hands and the spiral binding is specifically used so that the books lay flat when open, allowing children to work with them freely. The external parts books inform and inspire children on a path of scientific discovery. Designed by an AMI Montessori Teacher with the support of a Zoologist and a team of teachers/teacher trainers. ... Read more

Product Description
Scientists in general acknowledge that information on new methods should be spread throughout the scientific community quickly because awareness of techniques may facilitiate the formulation of new and interesting hypotheses. The purpose of this book is to present to a broad spectrum of investigators some "in vitro" techniques that can be used to study the vertebrate central nervous system. Earlier "in vitro" preparation dominated in the laboratories. Then, with the advent of the brain slice, people realized that tissue from the CNS is not as vulnerable to "non-physiological" conditions as was thought previously. This opened up a new ara in neuroscience and today a large number of "in vitro" preparations are available. The brain slice has been described in many publications. It is essentially a section of the central nervous system in time and space, and this of course puts certain limits on the use of the technique. For instance, it is difficult to study properties of large three-dimensional neural networks. It is equally difficult to study processes lasting more than 18-24 hours. In this book the authors have sought to point out solutions to these problems as well as to indicate how it is possible to push "in vitro" techniques towards their limits. ... New Insights in Vertebrate Kidney Function presents an important collection of review articles describing a multiplicity of research approaches (whole animal, tissue, cellular, and molecular) that have provided insight into the strategy and tactics for renal functional studies. Each chapter presents up-to-date research set in the context of our current appreciation of vertebrate renal structure and function. Coverage is comprehensive, ranging from studies in fish to mammals. Recent developments in our understanding of the regulation and integration of renal processes are considered throughout, and find particular focus in the final three chapters. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the seventh in a series of books on chemocommunication and chemical ecology in animals from fish to humans. This volume grew out of the Symposium on Chemical Signals in Vertebrates VII, hosted in July 1994 in Germany.

More than 200 scientists from 22 countries contributed to the symposium and this book.

Expression of olfactory receptors, effects of the major histocompatibility complex and of bacteria on semiochemicals are "growing points" of the young disciplines of chemoreception and chemocommunication studies. They are balanced by a strong field of behavior studies in a broad array of taxa. Investigations of sensory inputs deal with olfaction, vomolfaction, taste and terminal nerve. The breadth of the topics covert attests to the vigor and importance of the study of chemical signals in vertebrates, including, of course, humans. ... Read more

Product Description
A book aimed at researchers and graduate students in zoology, endocrinology, and veterinary science, comparative and medical endocrinologists and researchers interested in hormones as effecting growth and development. This volume underscores the impetus that comparative endocrinological studies have been provided to clinical and biomedical research and bridges the gap between comparative and medical endocrinologists. It is a comprehensive treatment of growth, development, and metabolic factors in both vertebrates and invertebrates. In five sections, the book presents the latest research on growth hormones and prolactin, insulin, and insulin-like growth factors, adrenal and thyroid hormones, and other aspects of growth and development. It comprehensively covers growth hormone, including GH receptors, GH release, GH structure and evolution, and effects on growth and metabolism. It covers insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I), including the structure and evolution of insulin/IGF-I hormone family, in growth, and the IGF bind of proteins. The book presents a broad and timely account of hormones/growth factors influencing growth and metabolism. ... Read more
