5-0 out of 5 stars Help Your Pet at Home
Written by two holistic vets, the Manual covers different treatment options for an impressive number of illnesses and health issues. You'll find diet, supplements, Western herbs, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and sometimes essential oils. There's even an "Author's Choice" section for each illness, so that if you're wondering which of various options to choose, both the vets list their recommendations.

The book is beautifully organized, fitting a tremendous amount of material into asmall format. Chapters include muscular/skeletal disorders; dermatological disorders; infectious diseases; immunologic disorders; endocrinologic disorders, etc. The illnesses are laid out alphabetically, with easy-to-see treatment options. Sidebars describe case reports with excellent Discussion, Treatment and Outcome sections.

At first I wondered whether the book would be too technical for me.But as I readalong, I was really impressed by the non-technical language, the thoroughness of the symptoms and treatments, and the book's excellent organization. Only the Chinese herbs sections are not accessible if you don't know traditional Chinese medicine, and this problem is addressed in an appendix with explanations of the uses and western names of the Chinese herbs.

Other appendices are helpful, too: "suggested oral dosages for herbs"; "suppliers" of herbs for easy ordering, and even a chart with acupuncture points. (If you know acupressure, you can use these points without needles.) For anyone doing chemo for cancer dogs, you'll get help here in figuring out a supportive herbal and supplement protocol.A fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Natural Veterinary Medicine: Science and Tradition
This book is expensive but well worth its price.
The information is clear, and precise.
The pictures are very well presented.
It is a great tool --- other books by same author are excellent too!

4-0 out of 5 stars good so far
I honestly have not read much of it yet. I am only going through the intro, but I am finding it interesting. The only thing that has put me off so far is that they put in new chinese terms without defining them. I guess it is not important to know what they all mean, but I feel weird not knowing. It talks about upper, middle and lower burners and then talks about upper, middle and lower jiao. And I am guessing jiao means burner, but I would feel better if they stated that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Text
Alternative Veterinary medicine is a field to which I have not had much exposure. This book covers many topics in a survey manner with just enough detail.I would reccomend it as a starter text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Manual is manual and as such it serves as a fast guide of consultation.
All that that acts in the area of veterinary natural medicine needs a fast guide of consultation, of the type Five Minutes.
This manual serves very well for a first consultation and to guide the first treatment mainly by the use of Chinese and western herbs, diet, acupuncture and other therapies.
Therefore, it is an indispensable book to every veterinary naturopata.
And the index is of easy consultation and very complete, still containing the appendixes, very useful and practical.
I recommend a lot of this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good book ...but!
I am an Acupuncture Physician in Florida and I got this book to take care of my dog. This book is not for beginners ..try 4 paws 4 directions for starts.
Following up on the book I went to Dr. Xie's website [..] and wanted to order some herbs for my dog. Simple right? Nope, they would not sell me any herbs because I am not a vet.

So given another chance I would not buy this book. There are other Vet Acupuncture books that are just as good (more reviewed) if not better. I would have not given this guy my money given his position of not serving all his reader

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Comprehensive book on acupuncture. This book is pricey, but I wish I would have bought this first.

      I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Xie's Veterinary Acupuncture
I used the book to treat my two dogs. One dog I treated for itchy ears and nasal congestion, and the results were immediate relief. The other dog I treated for mania and hyperactivity with temors and the results were great. I used an energy point stimilator/indicator as I am not a vet or acupuncturist. I found the book easy to read and the illustrations clear. The points recommended for treatment worked well for my dogs issues. I will try to find the chinese herbal remedies recommended as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
My experience is that only quality books are published by Mosby as Mosby publishes college text books for the healthcare field. I have spent thousands of dollars with holistic and traditional veterinarians over the years-having some of my animals continue to be ill(auto-immune diseases and viruses are difficult).I have learned to educate myself and learn ways to keep my animals healthy through preventative care. Human grade or organic food has significantly made a difference as well as supplements. This book gives wonderful information regarding diseases and alternative herbs/supplements to use. I am careful,as not all herbs/supplements are safe in themselves and/or due to the harvesting country from which they come-this book gives a list of possible resources-most only available to the veterinarian, however, when I see a product from that resource on the shelf at the store or on-line I am comfortable trying it. This book was written for the professional and should be viewed as such. I recommend this book for enlightment of alternatives that may be available. I have seen many supplements at the "Health Food Store" for animals-this book has provided a reliable source for checking the ingredients purpose and safety. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook!
This is a great book and I recommend it. My husband and I teach a college course to veterinary assistants (and technicians, if interested) on exotic pet care. We are using this book as a textbook even though it is geared towards technicians. For the purposes of our course, we are toning down the anatomy and physiology, and the diseases sections to make the information less technical.

I do have one suggestion: if there is another edition, sections on degus and aquarium fish would be helpful.

I also have a concern: we do not consider skunks or prairie dogs to be exotic pets; they are wild animals or wildlife. We believe this because skunks are rabies vector animals and, even if vaccinated against rabies, will not be considered protected from rabies by DPH; thus whether a person is bitten by a vaccinated "pet" skunk or an unvaccinated skunk, the skunk will be euthanized. As for prairie dogs, their history is a bit complicated. They were illegal to own for a period of time (due to linkage to a monkeypox outbreak)and now a person has to get a permit to own one. We have distinguished between exotic pets and wildlife in our course, that is, between animals that are legal to own and mostly captive-bred and animals that are wild and mostly illegal to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition, husbandry, and step-by-step descriptions of common procedures range from very basic to advanced details
Bonnie Ballard and Ryan Cheek's EXOTIC ANIMAL MEDICINE FOR THE VETERINARY TECHNICIAN appears in its second updated edition to provide a fine introduction to exotic animal practices for technicians in classroom and clinic settings. The emphasis on exotic species makes for a fine survey that includes the latest practices in exotic animal medicine, with new information bird behaviors, aviary management, and more details on reptiles, skunks, prairie dogs and more. Nutrition, husbandry, and step-by-step descriptions of common procedures range from very basic to advanced details and makes this an important acquisition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Vet Tech material
This book is handy for information on animals I am studying currently.Has a lot more which I will be learning as well.Recommend for other students like myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Book
The book provides good information on the basics of wildlife care.If you've worked with wildlife before, however, a lot of it is review. That being said, its a good reference and great easy to read book for those who are new to the field

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and accurate
Dr. Ballard has done an exceptional job of putting together a text for veterinary technicians interested in exotic animals.I am the program director of a veterinary technology program in Michigan and after reviewing this book, I immediately incorporated this text into our Exotic Animal Course.A great text for students, technicians and anyone interested in the health and management of exotic species. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any dog owner/lover!
We have the 2000 edition, my god it is fantastic! I would carry it around with me all day if it would fit in my purse! Its that valuable. It gives home remedies to problems which can save you one expensive vet visit, and is very informative.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good info.
Good information, but would of liked more pictures. It does have many pictures but, I had a different book before Hurricane Rita that I liked better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Dog Medical Care Book I Own For Last 26 Years
I have the First Edition, Eighth Printing from 1984, and still, in 2010 it is THE best dog care book in my library. The reason is that it has practical detailed information to figure out your dog's medical problem, with home remedies where useful, and full treatment explanations, including naming medicines a vet would use that has helped me to understand if my dog's condition is something I can treat myself, or if there is a temporary step I can take to help my dog until I can get him to the vet. I came here now to see if there was an updated version of it and add that to my library. The problem the other dog care books I have purchased over the years is that they are vague and do not give dosing information, and so are not practical. Obviously many of the medications named in this book require a vet prescription and necessitate taking your dog to a vet, but it is great to be able to read about the full care a specific medical problem would take, sometimes getting a lesson in what I may be doing wrong that can be aggravating my dog's condition. Many times I have been able to help my dogs on my own, or know exactly when to take them to the vet because of this book, and it has been an invaluable reference with every new dog I have on helping to figure out the various health problems that crop of when you own a pet.

      5-0 out of 5 stars A must!
I am a passionate dog owner. Being such, I consider the dogs of my family and friends to be family friends as well.

This is the ultimate gift I give every new doggy mommy and daddy out there.Nothing is more appropriate than a handbook with good and solid advice on how to help care for a new "child"From emergency treatment that can help save the life of a dog to knowledge that can help augment the treatment of various ailments, I have never found another text with quite the range of useful and helpful knowledge of this one.

This is a terrific and must have book for all that love their four footed children!

4-0 out of 5 stars Suggestions for the next edition
First, this is a great book, really. It could use a few changes to make it stellar, though.

      1) references. It would be good to be provided with further references for topics that it doesn't touch on in detail.

      2) explanations. The book will tell you things such as not to induce vomiting if petroleum products are ingested, but it will not tell you why that is the case.

      3) color photographs. This is VERY important. The photos are black and white, and not high resolution. This makes it difficult sometimes to compare your animal's ailment with those in the book.

Aside from these issues, it is a very helpful book. I learned that my dog has cheilitis and am treating it according to the book's directions. Although, upon further reading on the internet, I found that this condition could also involve yeast so the method they suggested may not work. This also should have been mentioned. However, you should always do more homework after you've made your diagnosis.

Kudos to the authors for providing pet owners with a book of substance. All dog owners should own this book. ... Read more

Interesting Facts from the Ten New Chapters

      1. African Hedgehogs: African Hedgehogs can live up to 8 years.

      2. Biology of the Immune System: Immune cells signal each other by means of small proteins called cytokines. Several hundred different types have been identified.

      3. Cloning of Domestic Animals: The most common tissue used for cloning from adult animals is subcutaneous connective tissue.

      4. Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Because of the lack of manufacturing standards, quality control, and known effects in animals, herbal medicines probably present a greater risk of adverse effects and interactions than other types of complementary and alternative therapies.

      5. Disorders of Potassium Metabolism: Potassium homeostasis in ruminants is determined by the balance between absorption in the GI tract and excretion in saliva.

      6. Equine Metabolic Syndrome: Hyperinsulinemia with normal blood glucose concentrations (insulin resistance) is the primary clinical finding in equine metabolic syndrome.

      7. Poisonous Mushrooms: The period between ingestion and appearance of clinical signs often indicates the prognosis in cases of mushroom poisoning. If the latency is less than 3 hours, the signs are typically self-limiting and not life-threatening.

      8. Porcine Circovirus Diseases: Porcine multisystemic wasting syndrome has been reported worldwide and has also been identified in wild boar.

      9. Pseudopregnancy in Goats: The fertility of does treated for pseudopregnancy appears to be normal, so culling affected goats is generally not indicated.

      10. Seminal Vesiculitis in Bulls: Vesiculitis in bulls is most often caused by bacteria and is most commonly identified in yearling bulls.

I pet-sit and am Red-Cross certified in dog & cat First Aid (which covers generally emergencies only, i.e., CPR, Burns, Seizures, Shock, Chocking, etc. This book covers all of those things INCLUDING treatments for all ailments (excepting a couple that a couple of my Special Needs' cats have, e.g., upper eyelid agenesis and post-surgery long-term care; and Radial Hypoplasia which hasn't really been a problem, but neithe are listed in the book.

I do, however, rate this a 10 star reference book - the print is kinda really small for me so I have to use a big magnifying glass - wish it came in big-print is all.I would buy that up in a split-second.

      HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

This is an excellent book, great information.Merck is well known for very informative medical information.Have used many of their books for nursing. My daughter will use if as a reference book for school & to expand her knowledge base.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superior quality work.
I found the Merck Veterinary Manual to be well written. It uses a type size that allows more information to fit in each page yet allows it to be seen with the naked eye. For the most part, the sections are clearly delineated and the explanations are concise.
All in all, a superior work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technical Manual of Veterinary Medicine
The Merck Veterinary Manual is a very technical, well-written manual of animal physiology and disease. To understand the writing you must have an extensive medical vocabulary. This book is not "light reading" but if you wish to have a working knowledge of animals and how they "work", this is the best manual I have read.

Altough complete, updated and deep covering most of the aspect of clinical pathology, exposition of the matter is done in the list form, like a "things to buy" note. It looks like a student's lesson note and the subject is not treated in the usual way a book does, as say with sensed phrases that correlate one to the next following a logical thread. It is more a manual than a book and it is something that is impossible to read one paragraph after the other, and even harder to remember. 4-0 out of 5 stars finally I get it!
Have been taking an extensive course in TCVM and was realy struggling with a few concepts, using this book as a back up to integrate with some Western medicine really helped me "get it"

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book of veterinary acupuncture that I know that it is for sale for the internet.
It is a simple and easy book of understanding, of the way that the students, in the course beginning, need to understand the Chinese medicine, mainly the acupuncture. But for an acupunturista he is also very useful, because it serves as much as a study book and of headboard as of fast consultation, in spite of his size to turn it a little difficult to transport. But I always drop it off at my clinic and I read it whenever it remains a time. Each reading that I do learns a little more. I already possess there is him two years and I still didn't get to read it entirely. It is the book that more has been contributing to my learning as acupunturist. I recommend and a lot to all that are interested in the subject: Chinese medicine and veterinary acupuncture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good primer
This is a wonderful text on complementary medical therapies for pets. I highly recommend it and as a fellow holistic veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) I found the information quite useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loaded with information!
Very thorough book on veterinary acupuncture. It seems intended for veterinarians which may make it hard to digest for the lay person. The theory is very well explained, the chapters on history and studies are informative and the illustrations of points charts are excellent. It lacks on the practical side though. It gives you general knowledge but does not go deep into how to do point selection in relation to your clinical findings.

3-0 out of 5 stars Opportunieis in Veterinary Medicine Careers
While giving exact statistics, the interpretation is such as to gloss over the difficulties entailed in getting into Veterinary School. The author plays fast and loose with language, switching from students to applicants, never giving the number who actually make it into that first class. As a better source, check the book on admission requirements.
The chapter on the history of veterinary medicine is specious, spurious, highly imaginative, and anachronistic.Check the Oxford Classical Dictionary if you're really interested and want the facts.
The rest of the book is, as your blurb says, pretty complete and up to date.I think deciding to become a Veterinary Technician after two years at an unaccredited school earning $17,000 a year in order to play with kitties and puppies is a total waste of time.Go find a different profession, earn a decent living wage, leave the door open so you can transfer a 2-year-degree to a 4-year-institution 20 years from now, and with your increased earning power, indulge your madness of kitties and puppies on the side.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointment
This book gave me the distinct impression that veterinarians, too, have bought into the Wind-Cold-Damp metaphors that permeate TCM practice. When TCM vet herbal instructors can't explain how these herbs are scientifically working in our pets, and when they also can't assure that the ingredients are safe, I have to ask why vets are being taught and encouraged to sell these products.

I question the wisdom of veterinarians recommending products whose real, pharmacologic activities they know little about, and especially if they think that they are treating a disease caused by "Stagnation" and "Deficiency" rather than a legitimate diagnosis.
